《Dragon Fragment》v6c12 Meeting the Obstacles

-Wolf Territory. Evening. 3rd POV-
By the second evening Quarter, the isolated thin clouds move slowly in the clear skies displaying a myriad of different stars shining down on the Plains and Hills West of the Northern Mountain Range in Telum continent. The Fox and Wolf fighters across the land rest for the night hoping for a peaceful day while other beasts engaged in different activities.
*Burururu...!* The 52 Foxes continued their march on a barren road through the grassy plain while maintaining their vigilance as they were in enemy territory. Unbeknown to them, however, not even half-way to the northern border, trouble had come already.
Most of the wolves had vacated the premises, but there's a reason they build large Dens underground or enclosed in sharp rock formations. A flock of Magical Birds were using the upper air currents coming from the north along the mountain range to scout wolf territory in search of prey effortlessly. The Eagle-like leader detected the fox group 4 Km below using darkness magic and signaled the others to descend in-formation.
*Fweee~!* The bird train whistled through the air at high speed towards the foxes below.
"...!!" Ramika noticed first as her sensitivity was the highest of the group and approached the vixen leading the group. "What's that sound?" She asked searching for the source.
The foxes experienced fewer bird attacks than the wolves as they were north of their territories and privileged magicians had little experience with them also. Only the non-magical foxes who tended farms and did common jobs would've identified the sound immediately as they suffered the most from beast attacks.
"Are the wolves attacking us?" Karla inquired looking to the back and expanded her probe in the surroundings, but she was unable to detect anything.
*Burururu...* The firefox group slowed down and formed a defensive circle while mobilizing what little magic resources they could gather in the past 2 hours. *Shriig Shriiig Shriig...* The crickets and other nocturnal creatures started marking noises in the silence and stopped soon after.
"Hm? Something is definitely wrong... It can't be--!" An elderly firefox affirmed and probed high up in the air. "GET DOWN!" He bawled atop his lungs and created fire in an attempt to blind the attackers.
*Fwoosh!* The fireball rose up into the air and illuminated the surroundings above the group, but didn't do much to blind the birds.
The High ranks were confused for a moment, and heed the warning eventually, then started crouching on the grass and the riders lowered their bodies. But it was too late.
*WHOOSH!* The high-rank black bird dived into the fox group opening his massive claws and closed the talons almost 2 feet long that could rip steel armors around a fox person that lacked them. *Fuak! Pra! Fwo-WOOSH!* The avian creature successfully snatched a firefox from his saddle and glided upwards as the others came behind him to do the same.
"AAHHHhhh!" The firefox screamed being carried off and alerting the others of the impending danger.
"MOOOVE!!" Karla ordered and her partner pounced from the spot.
*Srash! Srash!* The other beasts followed suit and dashed away in all directions.
But that didn't help them much.
""AAHHHhhh...!!"" Another two firefoxes were carried off into the darkness.
"Damn it all! Are we going to fight back?" Aremis questioned gripping the green fur for dear life.
"We can't! We don't have much Mana or any weapons." A Foxman declared looking up fearfully.
"We are in no condition to fight 20 Magical Birds..." Another firefox pointed looking at the blinking stars caused by the birds flying in circles high up in the sky.

"We need cover!" A vixen rider suggested exasperatedly.
"Where?! We are in the middle of a plain!" Hazel retorted.
"I got it! There should be one around here..." Yero muttered probing the surrounding until he detected a hole in the ground. "There's a Den!" He announced excitedly.
"Hum?!" Yelmo became aware of his partner's intentions and traced the probe to the hole on the West.
"THIS WAAaay!" The spear user called out and ignited a fire in his hand to signal the rest as they both break away from the group.
""Huuuuh?!!?"" The other foxes running in circles sounded perceiving the solution and turned to look.
"GO!" An elderly man ordered and mobilized his magic.
The firefox had lied about using all of his Mana back at the wolf hill when they were prisoners, so he could fight back for a time, but it was better not to. The avian beasts were also reluctant to spend Mana as their Tribe had no Mana Vein and lived high up in the mountains where ambient mana was thin, but they would also retaliate if magic attacks were exchanged. Although the feathery beasts had begun to notice the lack of fire attacks from below was most likely because the war with the wolves exhausted the foxes.
The firefoxes started gathering once more on their way to the designated place making it easier to get picked off, but the old fox in the middle of the group finished charging an attack with all of his magic. The fire user lifted his arms up with palms around a compressed ball of gas half a meter wide and ignited it while controlling the combustion.
*FwuUAASSSH!* The High-rank fire user ignited a blue-ish-white jet that rose up in the sky for ten meters and flashed a brilliant light casting well-defined shadows of all the beasts in the night.
""KYA-AAAHH!"" The giant birds were blinded temporarily and retreated back up in the sky.
But one of them wasn't so lucky as she was descending in the path of the searing blazes which vaporized the underside feathers in an instant and continued scorching the rest of her body.
"KRYAAAH--!" A high-ranked black bird squawked and fell with a column of smoke billowing off her burning body.
*THOOMP!* The charred bird dropped on the grass behind the fox group and spasmed in agony from the nerves that didn't burn completely.
"K-Kya...a..." The birdie twitched and stopped breathing moments before a mana wave signaled its death.
*Burururu...!* The foxes continued running West towards a wolf den and rushed inside in a file hoping to fit within the Dome at the end of the tunnel 15 meters down while the birds chased behind.
Lucky for them, the Den belongs to high-ranking wolves and it was spacious enough inside for all 49 foxes, albeit crammed like sardines in a Can. But the owners weren't going to be happy with the smell of their mortal enemies in their home.
Meanwhile, the birds resumed hunting the runaway prey relentlessly.
*Klack! Shriak! Klack! Shriak--!* The powerful talons slice open the red furs injuring many beasts as they failed to grab the riders, but most of the foxes were inside the Den already.
The elderly firefox who managed to kill a magical bird ran on the back thinking he wouldn't make it. How would he? When the birds had less and fewer targets to aim for. However, the avian beasts also had to choose their targets carefully, and not interfere with others in flight, so no fox outside was safe entirely.

"Ah! Kyaaa! Heeeelp...!" A fox woman got snatched right before they entered the cave and screamed while extending her hand down seeking help.
"CHIANY!!" Her beast partner stopped and called while looking up unable to help.
*Klack!* A pair of claws closed at the entrance of the tunnel right behind the elderly fox and his beast.
"Chiany..." The firefox lamented as birds dived down and tore his hide with their talons.
"Get in here, fool! I didn't just risk my life so you could die like an idiot..." The elderly firefox sternly admonished.
"Tukko... Chiany is gone... She's--..." The vixen lamented entering the tunnel with wounds all over her back and tears gleaming in her eyes while her throat tightened.
"It's okay, young one... We all lose someone dear..." The old male fox consoled and licked her mouth.
""HA-HUFF! HA-HUFF!"" The beasts inside the Den panted heavily and covered in wounds dyeing their fur in the dark.
"W...we're safe!" Pamuro asserted enduring the pain from the healed gunshot wound.
""Pheww~!"" The firefoxes rejoiced.
"How did you know about this, Yero?" Karla asked curiously and impressed.
"I...I planned to torture some wolf cubs and was calculating the distance between their Dens. I saw one a while back, so I figured there would be another closeby." The Spear user replied feeling ashamed under the gazes.
"Well, this is awkwardly ironic, isn't it?" Aremis retorted looking at the beasts unable to move.
""..."" The Foxes stay silence within the earthen Den.
"Aremis survived...again?" A fox beast questioned far away.
"Surprisingly... I can't even move. Hahaha..." The fox with three limbs broken still laughed nervously in pain.
"Headcount!" Karla called out loudly from within the Dome.
"We lost three men and one girl," Tukko reported from the entrance.
"What?! One of my girls? W-who was it?" Karla asked showing perturbance.
"Chiany..." He replied with a disapproval look.
"DAMN! She had so much potential..." She lamented gripping the fur with trembling hands.
"The guys were talented too..." The elderly firefox pointed out sternly.
"...Of course, that's also tragic. But I'll get heavily reprimanded for losing my squad members even though I tried very hard to keep them alive..." The dark-skinned vixen countered feeling irritated.
"Huh? Why did gender topic came up? We wouldn't be alive if it wasn't for Yero and Tukko." Ayumi wondered and reminded.
""Yeah!"" The foxes agreed in unison as they wanted to mourn the losses rather than argue.
"Paku, Tonto, and Zefun died in some of your places..." A fox beast who lost his partner announced upset.
""Yeah..."" The foxes agreed in unison and lowered their ears becoming silent.
...
"...This is all Stormy's fault!" Ayumi muttered after a moment.
"Hou? Well, I guess the dragon did take our Gear and taught the wolves...but I'll blame the birds that actually attacked us, thank you." Hazel dismissed and scratched the itch in his nether region.
"We should capture and enslave him with a real collar..." The young firefox insisted.
"Yes, yes... We know the dragon molested you. Just wait until we reach the Elders and you can tell on him..." Karla asserted sneering.
"Grrr..." The Rank 6 firefox gnawed her teeth exasperated being treated like a child.
"We aren't going anywhere with the birds out there," Tukko announced catching the attention of the foxes deep inside the Den. "Though it'd be hard to confirm if they really leave..." He reaffirmed.
""..."" The Foxes stay silence within the earthen Den waiting for ideas.
"Ugh... Let's wait until Sundown then. Donate mana to the healers and let's get patched up." Karla instructed.
The green wolf had to use her magic to circulate the air as the hole wasn't designed to hold so many beasts and the healers began treating wounds.
Back at the hill near the Mana Vein entrance, the wolves continue their preparations and Magic training with their bellies full while some converse of diverse topics. The purple-blue beast managed to uncover some of the mysteries of his reproductive system while upsidedown squashing his wings with his head laid back down and the white-haired girl on the left. *Brrzzzt~! Prrzzt! Zzzt!* The static arcs continued jumping on the dragon adding to the illumination of the stars as he explained his situation to the Elders.
Nefiru finished inspecting his body and explained his assertions. "So... It appears that Dragons like me are born with a dominant Sex which matures rather fast but remains dormant...and a clump of special Life Blocks which develops into the opposite Sex with some outside stimuli and then suppress the other. Though these 'Stem Cells' seem to be something that the body accumulates in preparation for our mating cycles when we're all forced into heat and signaling our respective disposition with hormones. Er... The uh, scent we give off..."
"Houm... In other growls...you weren't ready and Elina wasn't a Dragon?" Damya asked confirmation next to her older brother.
"Yeah, but not just that. This accursed mechanism seem to be made so that Dominant Beasts can force the change in the bodies of weaker Dragons with their Spirit. Her strong effeminate wavelengths just confused my body further." The dragon narrated making the golden she-wolf twitch with guilt.
"Dragons are so complicated..." The black she-wolf retorted with a blank look.
"It's because of that bastard Demigod! I'm soooo gonna beat him up one day..." The scaly beast declared and gripped a closed paw tightly.
"Pfft!" Shaila held her laugh and pointed out. "At least he didn't make you all hermaphrodite to save time..."
"Shush! You exhibitionist..." Nefiru protested and breathed in the girl's face blowing her hair.
"I almost got to call you Nefiruna~" She mused before making a wide smirk.
"Hm... I say your human memories are also holding you back." Dark 9 declared, attracting attention. "A Beast is more inclined to feel attracted to other Beasts than humans. I can't feel any arousal from a humanoid body, yet you won't take your eyes off Shimmer."
"W-well... The, uh... The mind of an adult human is suppressing the instincts of a young Beast which is suppressing my human nature in return." The dragon explained his mental state while being glared at.
"Maybe you won't be so perverted as a dragoness? Nihihi..." Shaila mocked covering her face snickering.
"The hell? Am I a Pet or a Male to you? Make up your mind..."
"Male, pet, beast--you are mine!" The girl declared and grabbed the large head with both hands.
"You cheeky girl..." He retorted wanting to lick her but refrained.
"You adore me like this! Nihihi... Ah!" Shaila snickered haughtily and realized. "Hey, does that mean Water Dragons can suppress the mating season urges induced by the Demigod?" She wondered and separated.
"Hm? Maybe... Unless I get my Magic suppressed. But remember what happened to the water dragon in your mother's family." Nefiru thought for a moment and answered before reminding.
"Ah... He got eaten... See? I was right...!" The girl asserted in a boastful manner.
"Yes, yes... You are my Guardian Angel. But right now, I need to go into heat to become an adult... I feel like an impotent human..." The purple-blue beast determined.
"Ah... I'm not Angel-y enough, it seems... Should I make wings too?" The nude girl grumbled and asked.
"Nah, don't waste mana." The dragon opposed.
"Want my advice? I'm more experienced than Earth 10 with this..." Dante offered while approaching.
"Suuuure..." Nefiru accepted with skepticism.
"Hmm... As far as can tell, your biggest mistake was clearing your mind since that makes you prone to influence. Fill your head with mating thoughts and match my intentions." The black wolf appraised and instructed. "Must hump her and joint together. Must fill her up with my seed to the brim. Must have many children..." He described while transmitting his intent.
"Jesh Dante... Your intent is so strong... Why are you so obsessed with mating?" The dragon resisted and asked curiously.
"You finally want to hear my story? It all started with my birth--" The darkness beast affirmed and prepared to narrate.
"Wait wait wait waaaaiiiit! That's too far back!" Nefiru interrupted and stopped what would be a very long story.
"Wuk... Telling our pasts is a good way to bond..." Dante uttered disappointedly and protested feeling his intent being resisted.
"Maybe later, buddy. Resume. Resume..."
"I'll hold you to promise!" Dark 9 accepted affirming and recalled. "I was so foolish back then... I thought I would impress a female stronger than me by conquering Fox lands. Unfortunately, the Foxes captured me and lured Father into breaking territorial rules."
"Guilt, huh?."
"Everything is MY fault! And I can't atone for anything. When you watch your brothers and sisters, second mothers and your own children perish--you change... I want nothing more than to restore the bloodline! Meanwhile, others just give up or stop mating altogether." He narrated and finished looking at the two high ranking females.
"That's so sad..." Shimmer mumbled and stroke the large canine paw nearby.
"That's so dumb... Trying to repopulate the Tribe on your own." Nefiru criticized.
"Houu... You underestimate me, dragon. I've been doing this for around 650 years since my first Pack formed..." Dante declared with a smug expression and turned his head looking back. "All of these pups are closely related to me and some to Damya. We are called 'Elders' for reasons..." He revealed and turned to the front.
The Darkness wolves felt too uncomfortable with the topic and turned away before engaging in their own conversations. Mostly related to the magic they had just learned.
"Damn... How do you not get tired of mating after so long...?" The scaly beast wondered in awe.
"Well, It's...only once a year, females have multiple cubs and...I'm not a human...?" The black wolf replied tilting his head bemused.
"...Nefi gets bored of everything that stays the same." Shaila noticed the wolf's confusion and explained.
"It depends on time or memory though," Nefiru added affirming.
"Ah! That gives me an idea." Shaila realized and got up before walking towards the dragon's rear.
"Hm? What is it?" Nefiru lifted his head and wondered about her intentions while following with his gaze.
"I'm going to scratch that itch you had earlier~" The white-haired girl replied with a naughty smile and hand gestures which confused him instead.
*Brrzzzt! Thamp!* The white-haired girl stopped and stared at the electric arcs jumping on the dragon.
"Hey, Nefi..." Shaila called out and turned to look back. "Could the lightning in your head be affecting your instincts?" She asked pointing with a finger.
"...Huh?" Nefiru uttered as puzzlement transformed his muzzle.
"Hooo... Shimmer might be onto something." The largest black wolf commented looking at the girl and turned to the dragon. "Didn't what happened with your head have negative side-effects?" He asked confirmation.
"Arf! He tried to eat me while unconscious back at his Lair." Amil pointed out rubbing his legs.
"I also noticed how that 'Head Electrocution' suppressed his emotions earlier," Aidan added from behind the golden wolf.
"Hunf! How can his body not be confused with the head so messed up?" Aker snorted and remarked in a snarky tone.
"Hmmmm... The Lightning Boost prioritizes rational thinking, but I don't have full control over it, so maybe it does something I'm not aware of..." Nefiru affirmed and commanded the elementals.
"Aaahh... It's this dragon that's complicated... Simple is best!" Damya asserted and advocated.
*Brrzzzzzt...* The dragon stopped most of the Lightning processes on his body as the Night reclaimed the darkness and his cognition lowered to that of a sleepy person, but without the old headaches.
"Ugh... I-I really need s-some sleep..." Nefiru said in a slow voice and shook the head to clear his mind.
"Hang in there!" Shaila encouraged and approached timidly.
"Hm? Sup?"
"I...I want to see if I can help you..." She replied and leaned onto the Dragon's belly before streching her hands over him.
The Scaly Beast moved his foreleg and helped her climb.

"Unnf... Puff..." The 14-year old girl got on the Dragon's belly and walked over to his nether region before squatting over his genital slit.
"Sh-Shaila?! Isn't that too bold for you?" The scaly beast questioned wide-eyed and closed his sprawled legs trapping her.
"Um? You mean there are no humans around to tell how to behave?" Shaila replied with a question and placed her palms on the dragon thighs.
I should've known that Shimmer would become so assertive after my advances on him... Erina determined observing the interactions patiently.
"But--but...you are cuter acting like a little girl. Give me back my Loli! And remember that you still have to go back to human society." He protested about her behavior while the Elder wolves observe the banter quietly.
"I KNOW! Geez... Stop nagging and enjoy the show while you can..." The little girl snapped feeling displeased as the hair obscured her face.
"What? Are going with my flow again? You regretted what happened in the forest too..." He pointed out disappointedly.
"Haa... No. It's different this time." The little girl sighed and affirmed shaking her head. "I noticed how my mind changed after coming to the Wild and being near wolves. I... I feel at ease here... I understand better than ever that I'm not just a human girl with a tragic past...I am an ancient Wolf with one, maybe two human lifetimes..." She spoke her mind and recalled the strange blurry dream that keeps repeating.
There are 'human hands' in that bedroom with a desk, a bed, and a small window which could be a prison for a Nobles, but...why it doesn't feel like 'me' in there? Isn't a memory of 'my' past? Just what happened in recent lives? The girl reviewed and wondered about the strange recollection.
"...Go on..." The dragon frowned and urged her to continue.
"Don't freak out... But for some reason, I'm remembering the past more than I should... It can't be normal. I haven't heard such a thing. So, um, I didn't have trouble assimilating the memories coming with their respective emotions like, um, Shimmer's which keep intensifying in the back of my mind. But lately, traces of unknown personalities are influencing me too...and I can't even tell at first..." She explained the source of her confusion.
"Say whuaaaat...?!?! W-will you be alright? You aren't going to walk on all fours, right?" Nefiru blurted asking worriedly and half-jokingly.
"Hehe... I wish I had fur too..." Shaila chuckled and affirmed smiling. "Anyhow, I figured there would be a price for accepting the past memories in a hurry to learn wolf language fast, but not this burden. Well, I'll be alright with some meditation away from wolves. That's why I want to go with you." She finishes explaining and shrugged.
"I see... The Monks and Hippies on Earth would be proud." The Dragon retorted.
"Uh-huh... Now, stop ruining the mood with your blabber..." She admonished and shone white light on her torso again before aligning their groin.
"GUK!" The dragon uttered in defeat and fixed his gaze quietly.
"Maybe it's best not to force this anymore..." The black wolf acknowledged sensing the change in the dragon and retracted his spirit before lying on the side.
Meanwhile, the girl looked down at the tightly shut slit almost 2 feet long as blood rushed to her face after becoming self-conscious of the shameful act she decided to perform.
"Waw... It's like you are a girl too..." Shaila reviewed breathing more rapidly and lowered her right hand slowly.
Really? I can't tell what he is at all... Dragons must not like pain when they have everything covered in scales... Damya asserted as she watched from Dante's left.
The voice of the girl barely registered as the Dragon was mesmerized by the beautiful girl squatting over his crotch with the surroundings illuminated in the dead of the night. Nefiru knew that allowing this was wrong in her current mental state, but being a helpless perverted when it came to the girl, and initiating a precious intimate moment, he wasn't going to stop whatever she wanted to do next.
And what she did, was hesitate.
"It-it must be itchy here..." The girl said trying to convince herself and pressed on feeling her head aflame from embarrassment when her hand stopped and trembled as her face contorts in disgust.

No harem! I don't trust myself to make a harem feel natural or healthy, I never met any person who has a personality that can adapt and live in a harem for reasons that are not monetary, so I can't draw inspiration from real life. Sorry!; 2. The enemies will not be bland and illogically mean. Some may feel like that at first, but I will take great care in fleshing them out, trust me. You may end up hating some, but you won't be able to deny that they had their reasons for what they did; 3. I am using a paid (and expensive) automated editor tool, and I take longer to write because I take my time in editing the stuff. I am aiming to improve and I will not shy away from constructive criticism, nor take offense for no reason; 4. Characters will die and will suffer, some will get over the tragedies and improve, others will not be as resilient. 5. This novel has a lot of ground to cover, it is neither a short story, a manual on crafting, or the script of some action scene. There will be both time skips and oversimplifications of some actions for the sake of moving the story forward. Time skips will be more prominent in the first 30 chapters. I will describe crafting processes and fights with more detail if they are essential for the chapter; 6. If I took my time describing something, it's because it is important. I hate novels that waste time describing useless stuff. If you skim over something, the chances are that something in the future will not make sense. I am an adept of "Chekhov's gun" principle; 7. I already have 31k words on my auxiliary documents, I have a plan for the story, and I will not be making changes even if someone ends up noticing some foreshadowing and figures out what will happen. The story comes first. 8. I have a wife, a job that demands 9h every day and courses related to my job (lawyer) three days of the week, it's unlikely that I will be able to do mass releases at all. I will have a healthy amount of chapters to be able to post at least 1 chapter every day continually. Don't worry. 9. I will read all the comments. I will listen to all you have to say and will try my best to accommodate demands as long as they do not hamper the path I prepared. 10. There is an arc that spans the entire novel. Each volume will be an arc in itself while progressing a little bit of the main arc. Every arc will have one or more main antagonists. I think that's it! Thank you for reading it all. Have an awesome time reading my first novel!!
