RIDE AWAKE
A STORY OF Kingard the Valiant
IN THE PROLOGUE OF CONCEIVED
NOT THE END
“...on stake unstaked his fervor quails
his courage ebbs, his vision fails...”
Girynni Nvehnyn Dynde
3:2:3:3/5, III:IX
Waking felt like nails bursting from his body, but something tight in Kingard’s chest prevented him from gasping at the pain. His brow rested on wood, a beam, sticky with blood and practically humming with magic.
He opened his eyes. The beam was sharpened at the end; he blinked in confusion up at the bloody tip looming above his head. The angle seemed strange, so strange... Slowly, his eyes trailed down the beam, past the odd print of his forehead in the blood. He strained, tucking his chin to follow the beam until – oh no.
It protruded from his stomach, angling upwards from just beneath his rib cage to jut inches from his face. The blood was his blood. The pain made sense now. He was impaled, hanging from a wooden stake, his wrists and ankles bound behind the beam to keep his limbs from dangling.
Why wasn’t he dead? His immortality had ended. This torture bore semblance to his time in Sierlyn’s dungeons, but the magic of A’lara had sustained him then. This time, he was mortal. A true rosen once again, but a mere mortal in the end.
It wasn’t the end, though. Kingard tried to stir his magic, but the humming of the beam grew louder, a soundless incessant buzz that destroyed his focus and robbed him of his senses. Too wracked to yell, the elf merely sagged. He brow settled against the beam, his eyes slouched closed, and Kingard the Valiant was lost to the world.
