Zhi heads out back and starts his workout routine with Zhao. As they finish Mu Zang shows up to pick up his cart. Zhi waves the man over as Zhao goes inside to clean up and change. Walking over to Zang, Zhi says. “Zang, good morning!”
Zang reaches out to shake Zhi’s hand and says, “Good morning Zhi.”
After shaking hands, Zang says. “I haven’t seen you for a few days, how have you been?”
“I have been good, but a little busy. I actually have a job for you today if you would like to make some decent money today.”
Zang takes a moment to consider and then says, “How much money are you talking about?”
“I picked up some goods and I will give you five percent of whatever you sell the items for. How does that sound?”
“What kinda goods?”
“Some art, jewels, and a few other things.”
Zang looks a little surprised at this, then says. “I don't know, that stuff is kinda beyond my experience. I don’t think I would be the best at selling it at all.”
Zhi steps closer and puts his arm around Zangs shoulder as he says, “It will be fine, I am not looking to get top dollar for it. Even if it takes you a few days to a few weeks it will be fine.”
Zang still looks unsure but says, “Well taking a look won’t hurt I guess.”
Zhi pats his shoulder and says, “Come on, let's go check it out.”
Zhi starts to lead Zang out of the gate, when Zang asks. “Won’t I need my cart?”
Zhi shakes his head and says, “No, we will need to get you a bigger cart most likely.”
It doesn’t take that long for Zhi and Zang to make their way over to Mo Pengfei’s compound. The compound is big and takes up a whole city block by itself, with a thick gated wall around the entire thing. As they walk around it and come to the main gate area Zang asks. “Isn’t this the Pengfei family compound?”
Zhi lets himself in through the main gate followed by Zang, once inside and walking towards Mo Pengfei’s throne room Zhi say’s. “Formally.”
“What do you mean formally?”
“As of last night it is now mine, since I decided to take care of Mo Pengfei and most of his men last night. The things I want you to sell are all the things I took afterwards.”
Zang slows down his walking and comes to a complete stop. His mouth is slightly open and he just looks at Zhi’s back. Zhi senses Zang stopping his movement with his spirit sense. Turning around he smiles at the man and says, “What it’s not a big deal, it’s just some weak thug. Come on, let's check out everything, so you can let me know if you want to find a buyer for it.”

Zang shakes his head and says, “If this is Mo Pengfei’s stuff, I don’t really want to sell it.”
“Well it’s a good thing it is my stuff then.” Zhi turns around and walks to a building that looks a lot better than all the other buildings. He opens the door and gestures at Zang to come inside. Zang hesitates for a few moments and then walks into the building. The first thing he is greeted with is piles of stuff. Then he sees a bunch of people, most are wrapped with bandages and a few look fine. But the thing that draws his eyes is the man who is tied up and sitting on a throne on the far side of the room. Mo Pengfei is in his underwear and is glaring with hate filled eyes at Zhi as he walks past Zang.
As Zhi walks through the middle of the room he is greeted by the painter servant who bows low and says, “Welcome back sir. We ran into a bit of an issue while you were gone.”
“I can see that some people are missing, but yet you and these men are still here. I am guessing the missing people didn’t run away?”
The painter and most of the men in the room look with fear at Zhi as the painter says, “No sir, about ten people wished to free Mo Pengfei. We came to a disagreement and ended up fighting them. We put them with the other bodies, we did have four people with somewhat serious injuries whom we sent out to the healers though. I hope I didn’t overstep with my actions sir.”
Zhi stares at the man for a moment to inspect him and a window pops up in front of him.

He dismisses it a second later and walks over to Cui Chen and puts a hand over his shoulder as he says. “Chen, you did a good job. Now I have a new task for you. I want you to pick ten men in the best shape. Once done, come to me with them.”
Zhi turns back around to Zang and says, “So what do you think?”
“I think you are insane.”
Zhi smirks at that and asks, “Why would you think that?”
Zang just waves his arms towards everything in the room and says, “No sane person would do something like this… You are a cultivator though, the few I have seen didn’t seem to be sane either.”

Zhi laughs and claps Zangs shoulder and says, “Maybe other cultivators are insane, but I think I am pretty grounded. So can you sell it?”
Looking at everything piled up, Zang shakes his head and says, “The weapons and the furniture shouldn’t be an issue. I met a few people who would be interested in it, especially if you don’t mind making a little less money than they should go for. The art and jewels I have no clue about, but I will ask around.”
“Sounds good, but still try to get a decent price for them. It doesn’t need to be the absolute best price, since these items were all donated to me. But the more you make on them, the more you will get from the sale.”
As they finish talking Chen walks up with ten men behind him, he bows and says. “Sir these are the men you asked for.”
Zhi looks them over for a moment and then says, “All of you will be working with Mu Zang till he is done selling all of this stuff. You will be his labor and his guards. I want only two of you to act as his laborers when he needs it, the rest will guard the goods. Follow his orders as if they were mine. Do you understand?”
All of the men bow and say, “Yes sir!”
“Great, now go wait outside for a few minutes while I finish talking with Zang.”
The men all move outside except for Chen who stands off to the side, waiting for orders. Zhi waves Chen over and says, “Chen I want you to send a few men out to go check on the wounded and bring them back if the healers say they are stable to move around. If not, let me know who is still out. Also bring the two highest rank members of the family still alive.”
Chen bows and says, “Yes sir, I will be back shortly.”
Zhi looks back at Zhao and says, “Take some of the money over there and go buy a wagon to haul this stuff around. Also I want you to check around for some…

The next few days in the outer area of Wong Jiang City, the streets are calm and the normal family members who roam the streets are nowhere to be seen. Rumors have been going around about something happening, but nothing has been proven. Some people say they are getting ready to fight each other and have turtled up in case others act first. Others say they have seen some family members walking around in bandages, and that the fight already happened.
The most popular rumor though is about what is being built in the main square of the outer city. Some men showed up in the morning a day ago and walled off part of the square and have been building something there. It is also surrounded with some men acting as guards to keep people out of the walled off area. Some think it is a theater stage, some think it is going to be a new building. Others think the city lord is building something there. All anyone knows for sure is that only the people building it have been allowed inside, and they won’t talk to anyone about it. It might also help that they are followed home by guards and people are afraid to approach them.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It has been five days since Zhi started his plan and today is the culmination of all his work. He looks over and smiles at Chen who is standing next to him. The man has healed up over the last few days and is in nice clean clothes now.
Chen is looking over Zhi’s work from the last few days and is still slightly stunned by what he sees in front of him. He glances at the man, then quickly looks away. He is still afraid of the man. No, he is afraid of the cultivator next to him. Because surely only a cultivator could think of something like this. Chen’s throat goes a little dry and he tries to swallow, but his mouth is also dry.
Zhi pulls out a jug of rice wine and hands it to Chen and says, “It’s almost time, take a drink. It will help with your nerves.”
Chen nods his head and uncaps the jug and takes a swig from the jug. It burns as it goes down but settles into a warmth once in the pit of his stomach. He caps the jug and hands it back as he says, “Thanks, I am still a little nervous about this.”
“Don’t be, just repeat the speech I prepared and it will be fine. I am gonna go find a spot to watch from.”
Zhi pats Chen on the back and says, “Break a leg.”
Chen looks around and asks, “Whose leg do you want me to break?”
Zhi laughs and says, “Sorry it was a figure of speech, good luck.”
Dear Spellbook (Link to rewrite in blurb)
A rewrite of this story has been posted here: https://www.royalroad.com/fiction/49881/dear-spellbook-a-fantasy-time-loop-rewrite Live. Study. Repeat. Tal is a sorcerer in a world where they are killed on sight, traveling with a man charged with carrying out the task. Every night Tal must pretend to study his spellbook to maintain his disguise as a Wizard’s Apprentice. If his disguise slips and his charade is uncovered, it will be his death. Seeking answers to mysteries that arose after his parent’s murder, Tal must accept any allies, no matter the risks, to uncover his family’s secret. But when he wakes up one morning to find himself trapped repeating the same day, he has to overcome his challenges all on his own. This story is an adaptation of a D&D campaign I ran but never was able to complete. I tried to capture the feel of a table-top RPG session —tropes and humor— without relying on the mechanics. This is not a litRPG or gamelit story and no D&D mechanics or system appear in the game. It follows one member of an adventuring party as he deals with the problems with that arise from being an adventurer. Namely, getting roped into adventures. The story has a time loop element, but will eventually move past that. This story explores the magic systems, the history, and the lore of the world through the lens of Tal's entries in his Spellbook and interludes from other written works in the world. New entries on Mondays Credit to JackOfHearts for the cover.
Disclaimer: This story is intended for adult audiences. You should not read this if you are under the age of eighteen. "I was born with an extremely prestigious but combat-weak logistics class. As the son of the clan head and the next heir, that just wasn’t enough of an excuse to spare me from my father’s grueling training. For in his creed the only strength that mattered was that grasped in one’s own two hands. In my journey through the lands with my harem, I was grateful for his training as it saved my life multiple times when my girls weren’t there to engage in combat. This is my story."
