《The Mystifying Diviner》0010. A not so simple misunderstanding

Zhi is sitting calmly, a slight smile on his face, while everyone is just staring back at him. No one wants to be the first to speak. Waiting for Zhi to say something instead. He zones out a little instead to wait for Meifeng

Question, if I turn in that quest now will anyone know? I don’t wanna light up like some Christmas decoration. Or like when I compreheaded a Dao.

[Peacock mode is turned off by default. Would you like to enable it now?]

I…What? Really? That is an actual thing? Please tell me you are joking, no one is that narcissistic, right?

[Peacock mode was programmed into the system database after it found over 272,945 cases of system users trying to show off in some way or another and dying because of it. It is designed more as a safety feature, then to help boost the host's ego.]

I can’t believe there are so many people like that, are they little kids or just not the brightest people? I would assume most people granted with systems are like me, who lived a long, healthy life that was full of rich life experiences.

[You are the exception, not the rule unfortunately. Most system users are not well adjusted adults who have their entire life experiences to pull from. Most are kids who spend more time playing video games, watching anime and reading online novels, then actually living their life.]

So what, these kids die early or something and whoever runs this whole thing takes pity on them?

[Some of them are like that. Others live a pitiful life, and some R.O.B. or another takes pity on them. A good amount of them happen to die from being hit by a truck, trying to save someone else from it.]

You know what, I think I am just going to stop asking you to explain stuff about the system. The more I ask, the weirder it seems to get. Lets just turn in the quest quickly before Meifeng comes back.

[That might be for the best.]

A box pops up in front of him.

Zhi glances over everything then closes out the boxes. As the last one leaves his vision, Meifeng enters the room with a tray holding a teapot and cups. She pauses at the door, noticing the awkward atmosphere of the room. Zhi briefly glances at her and his vision is filled with boxes.

STOP! Close all the boxes and turn off that skill for now.

All the boxes close and Zhi can see Meifeng standing in the doorway, looking at everyone else. Who are all quiet and only staring at Zhi. Zhi breaks the silence, “Oh wonderful, you brought more of that lovely tea. Would you be kind enough to serve it, please?”

“It would be my pleasure.” She moves from her position after closing the door and starts to go around the table putting down cups and pouring tea for everyone. No one moves, just waiting for Zhi. Once everyone is served tea, she takes a seat next to her father.

“Bojing is taking care of the other arrangements. We have about 15 minutes before the first dishes will arrive, Father.” Yongzheng just nods in reply, not taking his eyes off of Zhi.

Zhi claps his hands together, causing everyone but Meifeng to jump. “Great 15 minutes is more than enough time for what needs to be discussed.” Meifeng looks around at everyone, before speaking to Zhi, “Is there a reason” Before she can finish her fathers hand shot out and covers her mouth stopping her from speaking.

“I must apologize for my daughter. She spoke out of turn, young master.” Zongzhengs head is lowered as he speaks. Meifeng’s eyes go wide after hearing her father call Zhi “young master.” Zhi for his part doesn’t reply and just stares forward, acting like he didn’t hear anything.

Okay, so it looks like my little bit of showing off has made them all afraid of me. What is this young master thing about?

[Of course, you are in a world of cultivators where people will kill for nothing. Showing off spatial storage, is pretty much telling these normal people you are someone important, a young master if you will. They probably think you have been toying with them this whole time and might kill them or worse when you are done.]

Are you kidding me? What kind of shit ass world is this place. Killing people for no reason? Fuck, why does this kid have no knowledge of anything like that? My little joke, just turned into a death threat? FUCK!

As Zhi is staring forward, his face becomes displeased. Yongzheng and his daughter become pale watching as his face changes. Sweat is starting to bead on Yongzheng’s forehead the longer he watches the young man's face. Everyone else is also starting to sweat slightly the longer Zhi doesn’t speak.

[World is incorrect. It’s the entire reality that is like this. You are also in the weakest area of spirit Qi of this planet. While there might be Qi Distillation or maybe even a few Pillar Establishment cultivators around here. They are few and far between, most cultivators dislike coming to areas weak in Qi. As for the former occupant of your body, he was a poor village boy from the boonies.]

[Also speaking of death threats, you might want to do something.]

Zhi snaps out of his slight daze and glances at everyone. They all flinch back at his gaze, especially Yongzheng. Zhi slowly stands up, careful to not make any fast movements. Then slowly walks to the side of the room, turns to face the table before he kneels down and presses his head into the floor.

Holding his head to the floor he says, “I must apologize, I was onlying playing what I thought was a harmless joke. But I was informed that what I thought was a joke, could be taken as a threat. I swear on my life that no one in this room will be harmed by me. Please forgive this foolish man for causing you any issue.” Zhi continues to hold his pose for over a minute before a voice speaks. “I forgive you.”

Zhi looks up to see Meifeng smiling at him, she no longer looks pale. “This Ming Zhi, appreciates your forgiveness.” Standing up, he bows once more to everyone in the room. “Again I must apologize, I was talking with a companion so I did not realize what was going on. They were gracious enough to explain to me my misconception of what I had done.”

Zhi walks back over to the table and takes his seat. He lets out a sigh and picks up his teacup to take a drink. Setting it back down he looks over everyone, most of them are slightly less tense. But all of them are just quietly watching Zhi. “So I guess I should tell everyone who I am. My name is Ming Zhi, I am currently a wandering monk. Where I come from is further away then you could possibly imagine. I am here and I still can’t believe the distance I’ve traveled.”

Zhi picks up his teacup and takes another drink before he continues, “This afternoon I came into town, and wandered around until I ran into Hai Qiang and his nephew Zhao running a con, divining peoples fates. I was offered to help, since I have the gift for divination and I didn’t want people to believe whatever misinformation he gave out. After I helped point many people down a better path, I decided that Xiulan here would be my last reading for the day.”

The longer Zhi talks the more relaxed people become. Some have even started to drink their tea while they quietly listen to him. “After I was able to get her to sing, I decided that it was only right to treat her to a meal. I was planning to take Zhao and his uncle with us because I wanted to talk with them both. But his uncle disappeared while Xiulan was singing. Zhao himself was so immersed in listening to Xiulan that he didn’t leave with his uncle.”

Zhao’s face is flushed red, as he glances over at Xiulan quickly before he quickly looks away. Both his aunt and Xiulan’s uncle notice the boy's glance. But say nothing as Zhi continues to speak. “Afterwards we came here and I was in the process of trying to get some food, while enjoying some nice conversation. We were interrupted by an overprotective uncle, then we were interrupted by an overprotective aunt. Then I played what I thought was a harmless joke, that was considered anything but a joke. I think that about sums it up.”

Zhi takes another drink of his tea, before saying. “So now that we have all of that out of the way. Please ask any questions you would like, and I will answer them to the best of my ability as an apology for my earlier actions.”
