《Forsaken Hope》6: A long night

"Huhumhuhmmm ♪"
That will teach him. I had planned to read the books with him, 5 or 10 per day, but he needed a lesson. Tomorrow I need to check with the librarians if he read all the books.
I walk as fast as I can to my room. I want to sleep to see if I will dream again about Al. He was right when he said that it doesn't really matter who he was, it won't change things, but... I am really curious. I mean, he is an S rank white mage! Who is he? Who wouldn't want to know about him?
As I am entering the dorms, someone calls for me:
"Hey Noraaa!"
I look behind.
"Karli? What's up?"
She walks closer.
"Me and girls are going to prank the guys, want to come?"
"Prank?"
"Yes, we're going to throw Sound Crystals into their dorm, look at this!"
She shows me a bag full of Sound Crystals. They are light blue. When you pour mana into them, they make sounds.
"Look this one makes wind sound." - *pours mana* *Fuuuuuush* - "This one sounds like a ghost." - *pours mana* *GivE mE my bOdy baaaaaackkkkkk* - "Hehe, it's going to be awesome, c'mon!"
Those crystals were useless a few decades ago, no one knew how to manipulate the sounds. In their natural state, they only make high pitched sounds. But Leonardo, a great renowned magician, discovered how to manipulate them and make different sounds with it. Today they are used for music, pranks, etc...
"Sorry Karli, I have to pass. I have something else planned. And it's too dangerous, we might get into trouble."
"Naah, we'll throw the crystals and hide. They'll never suspect that it was us and think it was the Senior males. I won't put you on the spot, but you really sure you don't want to come?"
"Yeah, I'm sure, but thanks anyway."
It might be fun, but I really want to make this night count and dream as much as I can.
"Oh, ok. Well then, I have to go, goodnight!"

"Goodnight. Try not to get caught!"
I head towards my room.
-----
Dreams start to fill my head as I doze off, Al is playing with his friends by the river.
"I told you, I can do it!"
"You can't Burniel, you need mana..."
"Just because I have black hair doesn't mean I can't control water!"
Al is discussing with a boy named Burniel. They are both on the margin of the river, while the other 4 are swimming.
Burniel puts his open hand close to the surface of the water and starts chanting.
"Mages don't use chants *sigh*"
"Shut up! It's my way of doing things!"
Al rolls his eyes with a friendly grin on his face.
Burniel keeps his hand close to the surface of the water and keeps chanting random words. When he finishes chanting, he puts his hand as high as his body can, and gives a big slap on the water. Nothing happened. Burniel has a disapointed face.
"Well, in a way, you controlled the water. You splashed it."
"It's not the same... You are lucky..."
A moment passes.
"It's not really that great."
"It's not?"
"No. Mother always makes me study and meet strange people. They all look at me with funny eyes."
"..."
"At least you guys can play all day."
This time Al has a depressed face. Burniel says:
"It's dumb, isn't it?"
"What?"
"The hair colors. Wouldn't it be more easy if everyone had the same color?"
"..."
"Everyone would be equal! Those who studied hard would be the ones who got magic powers and money!"
"... You are right."
Burniel shows a big smile.
"You might be better than me in magic, but I am better than you in another thing..."
"What?"
"WATER WRESTLING!"
Burniel jumps straight at Al and hits Al belly with his shoulder.
"Gah!?"
Burniel takes the chance to grab Al waist, with his shoulder still on Al's belly, raises him, and throws him towards a deeper part of the river.
"HAHAHA, I'm stronger than you, learn your place!"
Al gets his head out of the water and takes a deep breath. When he sees Burniel taunting, he smiles and says:
"Oh yeah? Take this!"
Balls of water, with the size of a head, rise from the river and hit Burniel.
"He- ouch! HEY! Ouch! Magic is for- OUCH! Is forbidden!"
"Says who?"
"I say!"
Burniel throws himself at Al and they wrestle for a while. Later the other 4 joined the wrestling match.
...
It's almost evening, the boys are getting out of the river.
"C'mon guys, get over here and I'll dry all of us quickly."
They get close to Al. Al uses fire magic to make hot air, and uses that air to dry himself and his friends.
That's impressive, I could only cast multi-magic when I was ten. Multi-magic is controlling two or more different elements at the same time.
One of the boys looks in the direction of the town and says: "Oh oh..."
The others notice and also look in the same direction, and they have frightened faces.
Al also looks - "Oh no..."
It's Al mother and her guards.
"Alddan, what are you doing here?"
"Mother, I... I..."
"..."
"Answer me Alddan!"
"!! I was playing!"
"Don't you have your toys? And your brothers? Isn't our garden big enough?"
"It's... It's not the same thing... Mother..."
"Of course it's not the same thing! You shouldn't be playing with kids like them! C'mon, we are going home!"
Al's mother grabs him by his hand and starts walking in the direction of the town.
"Hey! Stop!"
"Burniel!"
"... What did you say?"
"You can't force Al to do what you want!"
"Burniel shut up!!!"
"You shut up Al! You have to stand up and fight for what you want!"
"BURNIEL SHUT UP!!!!"
Al's mother passes Al hand to one of the guards and walks to Burniel, who is looking at her with defiant eyes.
"... Know your place."
She puts her both hands on Burniel head, one of them in his face... And uses fire magic...
"AAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH-----!!!!!!"
"MOTHER STOP!!!! PLEASE STOP!!!!"
Burniel tries to get away but he can't, she is grabbing him.
"I'M BEGGING YOU MOTHER STOP!!!!!!!!!"
No one does anything. The other boys are too terrified and the guards wouldn't dare to interrupt her.
After 10-20 seconds, she stops.
"Carry those scars for the rest of your life. Remember who is your better. Let those scars remind you the day you defied me."
Burniel is kneeling, hands on his face.
"BURNIEL!!!"
Al screams with a crying face
"Alddan! Silence! They are not like us! Do not weep for them! They are just like cattle! They are just to be used!"
She grabs Al hand and walks in the direction of the town, guards following her.
Al looks behind and sees his friends circling around Burniel...
-----
I wake up.
"Alddan..."
*********
"Oh my God... Finally!!!"
Seriously, this is too much! 50 books in a row is a nightmare! I pretended to read all of them but damnit... It's too much!
Good news is, none of them talked about me. The bad news is, I want to kill someone...
"... It's morning already... I guess I'll head to the dorm..."
I get up from the table and leave the pile of books behind. Normally, I would put the books back in their place, but at this moment, I couldn't care less.
I turn right at the end of the shelf and... The slut is there... On a table... Without clothes...
"Hi handsome, working hard?"
"Oh for fuck sake woman... Put some damn clothes on!!"
"Hmm, but it wouldn't be as interesting. Fufufu, I trust you have some stress to relieve, why don't you take this chance... To relieve it?"
"I already know someone who is a "stress reliever"... *frustrated sigh*"
She shows a surprised face.
"Oh? Who might that be if I may ask?"
I show the front of my right hand to her.
"Miss Liria, this is miss Palm, miss Palm, this is miss Liria. Now, have a good day."
I pass by her while she looks at where I was with a confused/shocked face.
And no, obviously I prefer a good woman instead of miss Palm, but I won't sleep with anyone who appears out of nowhere. And how the hell did she knew I was here? Ah, whatever...
"*sigh*, I just want some sleep..."

2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
