《The Invisible String》Chapter 15 - Inevitable Checkmate

“Wait! You know when’s my birthday?!”
Syndesi was puzzled. She didn’t remember telling anyone about her birthday. Ruth ignored her question and looked away from her inquisitive eyes.
“OHH!! I REMEMBER NOW! But I only said it once during self-introduction on the first day of school. And that was an entire month ago. You remembered it since then?!”
Once again, Syndesi’s question fell on deaf ears. Ruth kept a poker face, suppressing her discomposure like a professional actress. Of course, Ruth wouldn’t have wished her happy birthday if she didn’t have a plan to follow up with.
With Syndesi’s immense popularity, there was no contest. She was naturally appointed to be the class monitor. And Ruth had full leverage over this weakness.
“It’s about time.”
The clock strikes 8.
Before Syndesi could continue probing, Ms Sophia entered the classroom. An opportune time, indeed. That’s what most people would have thought. But it was different for Ruth, it wasn’t opportune, it was calculated. Syndesi was forced to leave her questions for another time.
“As with every difficult question, the best answer is often no answer.” Ruth smiled to herself, pleased with her triumph.
“Class attention!” Everyone stood up upon Syndesi’s command. They were all perfectly in sync, it was as though they were possessed by soldiers.
“Class greet!”
“Good Morning Ms Sophia!” A unison voice. Everyone bowed 90 degrees. A form of utmost respect for the teacher in front.
“Good Morning Class. Have a seat.“
Every student promptly sat upright on their seats and waited patiently for Ms Sophia’s next instruction.
“Are you ready for a GREAT DAY?”
“YES!”
“Are you SURE?”
“YESSS!!!”
“Let’s get started then!”
.
.
.
And finally, it was time for recess.
The time for Ruth’s efforts to be paid in full.
