《Goddess of Computation》 chapter12.h

"Goddess Ada, forgive me but I still don't understand," Leanne looked at Ada quizzically.

"I have perfect health and can survive anywhere -- probably even in the bottom of the ocean and definitely out of the atmosphere. I don't need to eat, sleep or do any other usual human bodily function. I have the capability to compute at godly speeds and can remember everything perfectly," Ada said and then added. "Oh, what did I say about not saying Goddess in front of Ada?"

"Ada, The Holy Book states that all gods and goddesses can do this," Leanne replied in a voice indicative of mild disappointment.

"Leanne, are you saying all gods can tell you that the volume of a 3-sphere with radius 496 is approximately 298673337994.39 if rounded to two decimal places? 496 is a a perfect number by the way."

"Ada, forgive my ignorance but what is a three sphere?"

"A 3-sphere is a sphere in four dimensional space. As you may know a three dimensional sphere has a volume of 4 pi r cubed divided by 3. A 3-sphere has a greater volume since it has one more dimension. To put it more clearly, it is a n-sphere with n = 4 where n represents the dimensional manifold that can be embedded in an Euclidean space of n+1," Ada replied. She remembered this from her recreational mathematics days before coding took up more of her interest.

"Ada, what is pi?" Leanne looked very confused.

"Okay, I can understand not knowing a 3-sphere but not knowing pi? Leanne, what do you call the ratio between the circumference of a circle and its diameter?"

"Ada, I do not recall a name for this ratio in my language. We typically use three point one."

"3.1 is better than 3 I suppose. Clearly, considering that you're more educated than most mortals in your society, I can tell that the state of mathematics is pretty elementary. For now, Leanne, just know that the ratio between the circumference and the diameter is not a rational number but rather a transcendental number. A transcendental number is a number that is not a root of a polynomial equation with integer coefficients. To put it more simply, just consider this ratio as a number with infinite decimal digits that never repeat. In the divine language, we call this ratio pi. The first few digits of pi are 3.14159265."

"Ada, that is illuminating...," Leanne was slightly taken aback and paused as she took a moment to find words to continue. "I have also never thought of our world as more than just three dimensions."

"Considering that a dimension is defined as the minimum number of coordinates needed to specify a point, this world definitely has more than three dimensions. Consider time for example. Say you're meeting a friend across town. You will need to specify not just the location but also the time you will be meeting her. Hence, time is another dimension."

Leanne nodded in understanding.

"Also, if you recall, the gods live in a different plane of existence. That would also imply another dimension. And, of course, if you consider superstring theory, there has to be ten dimensions. M-theory requires eleven dimensions and the state space of quantum mechanics is an infinite dimensional function space."

Leanne stared in complete bewilderment.

"Leanne, I'm not surprised you don't understand what I'm saying. I have a hunch that the gods and goddesses probably have no idea what this means either," Ada continued. "Now, this knowledge may seem quite useless to you but that's because I'm just giving you a dose of pure mathematics and physics."

Leanne paused in thought and then said, "Ada, in other words, you possess knowledge that the other gods do not possess. Some of them may not be very useful in our day to day lives but others can be."

"Exactly! You have that rare combination of brains and beauty," Ada was relieved that she didn't have to go into length to explain further.

Leanne blushed and said, "Goddess Ada, I do not deserve such praise."

"Modesty is also a good virtue. But enough of this. There is something else that I as the Goddess of Computation can do that I'm not sure other gods can."

"Ada, are you referring to your power that comes when you meditate?"

"I wouldn't call it meditation but you are on the right track. Have you heard of the System?" Ada asked.

Oh, God, I hope you didn't put me in a world where it's like a LitRPGs where characters can see their stats in floating blue boxes, Ada silently prayed after asking the question.

"Ada, I have not. It is not in the Holy Book and I have never heard anyone, even the heretics, talk about a system," Leanne replied and then asked in curiosity, "What is it?"

"The System defines the fundamental nature of existence in this world. It's the OS of this universe. If you haven't heard of it, then there are three possibilities. Possibility one is that the System exists but no one knows that the System exists. Possibility two is that there are those who know, which most likely are the gods, but that this information isn't known to mortals or at least most mortals. Possibility three is that I perceive the world differently than anyone else."

"Ada, if the System exists, can a mortal access it?"

"Leanne, that's a good question. Let's do a test. Say the words unpause systemhelper clearly and tell me what happens in the next few seconds."

"Unpause systemhelper," Leanne said loudly.

They waited. While Leanne focused on noticing any changes, Ada looked up at the sky above and noticed that it was getting darker outside. The sun would be setting soon. Not even a full day and so much has happened, thought Ada. She started going over from the beginning of the day when God transported her to Urth.

"Ada, nothing has happened," Leanne said interrupting Ada's reverie.

"I'm not surprised. You're not an user in the System. And I don't have the privilege to create you as an user. However, maybe you can access my power somehow similar to how you were able to tap into Ayula's? How did you attain the power Ayula gave you?"

"Ada, there was a ritual that all new initiates of my temple have to go through. I would skip the details of the ritual for it was long and tedious. At the end of the ritual, each initiate must place his or her hand on the Altar of Life and visualize what life means to him or her. Since the altar of the temple is the conduit to the god, touching it and then aligning the thoughts creates the possibility to attain a blessing from the goddess.

I touched the Altar and thought of an image of a huge tree that symbolized life with countless creatures living on its branches and beneath its roots. Then, I was told that I fainted. When I was unconscious, I dreamed that I was in the scene which I visualized. There was a giant tree in front of me exactly as pictured in my mind. I heard the birds sing and the tree leaves rustle in the wind. I felt the wind blow past my skin and the soil underneath my feet. I saw the golden sunlight filter through the tree canopy and the vibrancy of life everywhere. I was there. It was beautiful and I calmly observed the scene for seemingly just a minute. When I woke up in the temple, half an hour had passed by and I discovered that I was bestowed a power."

"Leanne, were you touching the altar even after you fainted?"

"Ada, after I fainted, I was not touching it with my hand but I was leaning against it. To be blessed by the goddess, the initiate must be physically touching the altar during the initiation."

"Now, I wonder if this would work?" Ada pondered.

Leanne waited patiently.

"Leanne, would you care to try another experiment?"

"Ada, of course."

"Alrighty, then. Stay where you are," Ada said as she disentangled herself from the very comfortable cloud and stood up. She felt that if she wasn't talking and she didn't have to sleep, she would have dozed off a while back.

"Ada, what do you plan to do?" Leanne asked in curiosity.

"Leanne, remember what we talked about earlier? Can you visualize a perfect sphere? And if you can do that, can you visualize a 3-sphere?" Ada asked.

"I can try."

"Then, do so and visualize it very hard."

Ada walked the five steps to her disciple and touched Leanne's forehead with her right hand. Leanne gasped and then fainted.

"Now, does this mean I know everything that she knows?" Ada asked herself. "Okay, I don't seem to have any new knowledge or memories. I guess not. But she may wake up with a power."

Well, I don't know if this is a relational or correlation database but that doesn't matter since clearly I have no idea what the commands are to actually read the entry before installing it, Ada thought.

"Pause systemhelper," Ada said as she rolled her eyes in annoyance.

Then she looked at Leanne who has opened her eyes. The first thing Ada noticed was that her follower's eyes have changed color from a dark brown to a light golden color.

"How do you feel? Any powers?"
