《Goddess of Computation》 chapter7.h

Ada gasped in relief once she finally managed to alter the descent rate to have the cloud settle softly on the ocean. Though the cloud's final descent was slow, its enormous size inevitably displaced a large volume of water that swept towards the shore. This was not something Ada had foreseen and she was filled with dismay when she saw that the smaller fishing boats have capsized. Ada wasn't sure if they knew how to swim but she was glad that all of them were still alive. There were angry yells from some of them. Whether these words were directed at her, their god or someone on shore wasn't clear to her since it was in a language she didn't recognize.

Ada shook her head in dismay. "Wonderful! No isekai cheat for understanding of all languages for me here. Now how am I supposed to explain to them that I didn't do this on purpose? I doubt they also know English on top of whatever language they're speaking."

She continued her monologue. "But I didn't kill any of them and all their ships are still intact so that should count for something right? Do they have marine insurance around here? For now, I should try doing something to ensure they're safe and don't drown. But what can I do?"

A series of thoughts went through Ada's mind debating on what she could possibly do to improve the situation. Thankfully, she didn't have to do a thing. She heard bells ringing and bugles blowing from towers in the city. Following the initial call of alarm, several small vessels were dispatched and they quickly rescued the stranded fishermen. None of the men would drown. Yet, before she could breathe a sigh of relief, she noted a large two mast sailship headed her way. She wasn't so keen on the ship towards her for she saw a large number of armored men onboard this welcoming party. The wind was towards her cloud indicating their imminent arrival.

With her eyes, she could see better than an eagle and what she discerned was concerning. Though the ship itself looked rather primitive with no armaments, the two dozen soldiers onboard looked ready for battle. Some of the bowmen were already aiming their bows at her. There were also three ballistas onboard. They didn't appear armed at the moment but that could change very soon. Would she be immune to these weapons? She suspected so but she had no idea. She also observed a few people dressed not in armor but rather fancy robes. Were they mages or local nobles? If the former, what if they had some kind of magical weapon or even worse -- what if there was a god with them?

She shook her head and rejected her concerns. "Well, what the hell! I'm supposed to be the goddess here so why should I be afraid of a bunch of mortals with tiny boats and primitive weapons? Unpause systemhelper!"

"I guess I have to know the name of this object which is the ocean. I'll just have to guess."

...

...

"OK, so UrthOcean is the object name but somehow I can't edit it? That's to be expected. Otherwise I could have transmuted something besides my cloud. Guess I can't modify anything that doesn't belong to me. So, what can I do now in the next few minutes to look impressive?"

...

...

"Yeah, I know lookimpressive isn't recognized but it certainly should be. I'll write some code on that."

...

...

Much to Ada's surprise, a giant screen with a text editor suddenly appeared in her mind. It was actually closer to a lightweight IDE with a few buttons and color schemes. There was no keyboard which indicated to her that she would have to create it the same way she has been giving commands, i.e. by thought. With no guide at all, she decided to just dump the commands that she was going to tell systemhelper directly onto the blank file in front of her. Much to her delight, there was no complaint from systemhelper and she hurriedly wrote a script.

Ada made the script simple. The script's purpose was to generate several objects. One was to make two dozen flat circular silver discs with a meter diameter. Silver was the shiniest element and on sunny days, they would be quite brilliant. Furthermore, the mirrors were wrapped in divine clouds so their reflective brilliance would be more diffuse and so that they would float. She did a quick calculation in her head to ensure that the proper proportional densities ensured that neutral buoyancy held. The script was also to generate two spheres of sodium about half a meter across wrapped in two miniature divine clouds. If these balls touch the water, there would be quite the fire and bang. These objects were not able to fly on its own and would be pushed by the wind but for looking impressive, this was a good start.

Then without another pause, Ada thought:

...

...

Instantly, two dozen floating silver mirrors and two floating sodium balls appeared in front of Ada. The mirrors were so bright that she was temporarily blinded. When her eyes readjusted a second later, she could see that the humans on the boat were still shielding their eyes. Apparently, human eyes could not adjust to the brightness like divine eyes could.

"Maybe I should tone it down a little?"

That thought dissipated as quickly as it came when Ada saw several arrows launched from several of the archers. They all missed her short by at least twenty feet. Their short bows are truly lacking in range and firepower, Ada thought. Still, this attempted assault wasn't appreciated. She took one of the floating sodium balls and pushed it towards the ship. When the cloud was a few meters away, she transmuted some of the cloud back to being part of Cloud Ada. The sodium ball dropped into the ocean and exploded. The ship was far away enough that it wasn't damaged but the waves generated by the explosion gave the ship a moderate push. Ada heard people on the ship scream and saw them duck in fright. They were close enough that Ada could hear them yelling amongst themselves. Their jabberings and gesticulations yielded no clue on whether they planned to surrender or to continue their attacks.

The former turned out to be the case as a girl in an attire akin to that of a priestess stood up from the huddled bunch of armored men and gazed at Ada. Compared to the men around her, the girl looked quite frail and small. Why she was chosen as a representative out of everyone onboard was a surprise to Ada. Her words cleared up Ada's confusion since what came out of her mouth was in perfectly understandable English. "Holy Divine One, we implore you to please forgive us. The men acted out of instinctual fear and meant no real harm."

"Am I really supposed to believe that when you guys just shot at me?"
