《Goddess of Computation》 chapter6.h

Though she has a good idea of where she was, the logical part of Ada's brain churned some more. She wanted to have a better grasp of distance so that she could figure out the time she would take to actually fly over to the mountains. According to her map, past the mountains was a small city next to the ocean. The map database had no names for any of the places and until she met some locals and learned their name for it, she decided to call it Foggy Mountains. Though she could remember the name perfectly, she wondered if she could edit the file. The last time the file was edited had a timestamp matching that of when Ada first arrived in this world. This possibly meant that only God could modify the file but she wanted to see if she could. If she could create or edit files, she could create new processes and perhaps even new classes for the ada program.

"Unpause systemhelper!"

...

...

"Let's first see if the file is in my directory."

...

...

"Seriously, that's the only file in my directory?"

...

...

"Hmm, the database may not have been updated yet. As God, he sure forgets a lot of the basics. I wonder if I can update it."

...

...

I knew I didn't have root access and this confirmed it, Ada thought.

...

...

...

"Well, great security here! Maybe I can try the find command?"

...

A stream of folders with Permission Denied entered Ada's mental view. This was not helpful as well.

"Pause systemhelper," Ada said as she sighed. "I suppose I could do it manually but I have no idea how to type into the system. This isn't the most important thing right now. And forget about figuring out the distance. Not important now either. Let's just figure out how to fly over there.

I'm pretty sure that the standard library doesn't have any kind of engine, propeller, rotorfan or rocket. To generate thrust, I'll need to create a means of moving the air behind me. Or if I knew how to manipulate gravity which seems even more out there if this thing can't even make a steam engine. I guess I have to get creative again."

Ada thought that her Cloud Ada platform was more akin to a gas balloon than anything else. A gas balloon has no active propulsion mechanism but it could be steered based on the wind direction. She recalled from the many Wikipedia articles that she has read over the years that The Two Eagles Balloon was able to break a world record flying from Japan to Mexico. Could she do the same?

After an hour of experimentation adjusting to different altitudes, Ada placed the platform in a region where the wind was blowing in the general direction towards the mountains. There was no method for fine steering but it was enough. Once she crossed the mountains, she could just lower her floating palace and finally meet some people. With the current speed, she estimated this would take a few hours.

With time on her hands, she walked to her palace and spent the time vigorously altering the place to make it more habitable and decorated. She didn't bother changing the shape of the outside walls but did add more normal-sized doors and windows with colored glass. Inside, she created curved walls to divide the place into multiple rooms. As a goddess, she didn't need to eat or sleep but she thought in case she has mortal followers she might as well create beds, tables, benches, chairs and candles. Aside from bedrooms, she made three rooms to be kitchens with counters, tables kitchen tools, utensils and wooden stoves in each. She also made two latrines on either side of the palace. The walls were thick enough that after all these transmutations, the only signs were indentations along the lower edges of the outer walls. She created sconces with unlit torches and placed them in those indentations. Those might prove to be useful at night.

To beautify the place, she created tapestries and rugs with abstract geometric designs. Ada has always liked abstract geometric figures and she let her imagination go wild with the patterns. For the inside of the outer walls, she added a color gradient which went from a light blue to a deep gold and then to blue again as the wall circled around. Lastly, she entertained the thought of creating an altar in the center of the compound to make it more temple-like. She supposed that every god should have an altar. To her surprise, the altar class did exist. However, it required a fair amount of customization. Seeing that she would soon be near the city, she decided to postpone this project to another day.

Ada glanced out of one of the windows and saw that the platform has crossed the mountains. Exiting the palace, she walked to the edge of the cloud to have a better vantage point. She also lowered her platform a little. The city below her slowly came into view and what she saw did not surprise her. God had warned her that the society was primitive and if her experience with the System was any indication, medieval would be how she would describe it. The entire town (for she wouldn't call it a city) probably housed several thousand people at most. Mostly there were just dirt streets and wooden homes barely two stories tall. The two main thoroughfares that crisscrossed in the middle of the town had some carriages drawn by beasts yet unidentifiable from her height. There was a roughly rectangular wall that covered three sides of the town. The fourth side faced the ocean where there where a dozen or so sailing ships next to a wharf and a lighthouse. The lighthouse was by far the tallest structure in the entire town and that was about ten stories tall. She guessed that it may serve the dual function of a watch tower as well. Aside from the lighthouse, the only noteworthy structure was a circular temple several hundred feet in diameter in the northeast region of the town with a well-maintained garden around it. The temple grounds had a wall around it separating it from the rest of the town. Even from up here, she could see a throng of people in a long line gathered outside the actual temple and presumably more people were inside.

"Hmm, I wonder if everyone here worships in that temple, what will they think of me?" she wondered.

As if in anticipation of her question, there was a series of loud blares from a bugle which originated from the lighthouse and bells started ringing from the temple.

"Oh no! I didn't realize I have drifted this far down," Ada cried.

She saw the wharf approach closer and closer. At this rate, she was going to unceremoniously crash into the ocean next to it.
