《Goddess of Computation》 chapter1.h

Ada decided that the first thing was to explore her surroundings. She thought God was ridiculous for giving her divine powers but not even a map of her own home. The place was huge and she had difficulty of telling the distance to the far walls when there was nothing in the room to gauge distance. The only way she could get to know her new home was to walk around. Her walk uncovered nothing except spotless bare white walls, floors and pillars. The spacious flat ground and the tall Ionic pillars reminded her of the Roman architecture she saw once on a trip with her parents. This was her last family trip which happened right before college started. Upon the thought of her family, she was suddenly struck with the depressing insight that she was now gone from her world, possibly forever. Do they know even know if she's alive or dead? Would she ever see them again?
Last night before she delved into her studies, she was sidetracked with reading online articles. One of them described the last words of a terminal cancer patient. He was asked how he felt about dying. He had said that he felt lucky since he had time to say goodbye to his loved ones. This is like suddenly dying with no time for saying goodbyes, she thought as she wiped some tears from her eyes. She shook her head and rubbed her eyes. This was not a conducive line of thought. She had decided not to spend her last question on any inquiry of returning to her world for the good reason that it wouldn't do any good to help her where she is. Maybe if she did enough good here to God's satisfaction, God would come back and transport her back to Earth. As far as right now goes, there was little point in beating herself up or dwelling on nostalgia.
Her palace could best be described as a flat field with random pillars. There were no mosaics, paintings or statues of any kind. Everything was glaringly white. The material was strange though and didn't appear to be brick, marble, concrete or really anything she had seen before.

"I suppose this stuff's probably indestructible if this is supposed to be a goddess's home," she thought aloud. "Where the hell am I anyway? Or should I start saying where in heaven am I?"
In such a cavernous space, her voice carried itself to the far walls and echoed back at her. Ada realized that there was no need for her to walk the entire length to calculate how large her home is. Clearly, there was an atmosphere here if she was able to hear her own voice and the echo. Assuming that the atmosphere here has the same molecular composition and density as that of Earth, she could calculate the distance to the walls and identify its diameter. The supposition here was that her home was shaped like a perfect circle. A number of ancient civilizations have thought that circles were the most divine perfect shape. It's worth a shot and I definitely need to find the fastest way out of the world's most boring building to see what's actually out there, she thought.
"Hellooooooooooooo!" she yelled in a random direction. She waited and counted the number of seconds elapsed on her smartwatch. Three seconds later she heard the echo. Dividing that by two to calculate a one-way journey, that'll be 343 meters per second multiplied by 1.5 which gave her 515 meters in that particular direction. She turned 90 degrees and shouted the same thing. She counted once again and this time it was 1.2 seconds which meant 412 meters. Using trigonometry, she could calculate the radius of the circle based on the formula of r = (a^2 + h^2) / (2*h) where a is the distance from where she is to the edge of the circle and h is the distance from where is to the edge of circle that's 90 degrees from the direction towards h. Doing this calculation yielded the radius to be 527 meters.
"Wow! This place is even larger than the pyramids," she shouted in wonderment. The Great Pyramid of Giza has a square base which covers 13 acres in total or approximately 230 meters on each side.
"Using pi r squared for the area of the circle and dividing that by the square of 230 meters, I get 16.5. My home in area is 16.5 times more spacious than the Great Pyramid," she muttered quietly as she calculated in her head.

"Hold on! How am I able to do all this? I'm not bad at math but I definitely wasn't able to figure stuff like this just off the bat," her voice went from a quiet mutter to that of excited shouting once more as she realized what she had just computed in her head. The echo came back a few seconds later with full force and she decided she really needed to quiet down.
"And yeah I studied a bunch of stuff on pyramids and geometry at school but I don't recall any of that. I definitely didn't remember the size of the pyramid or the trigonometric formula for calculating the radius of a circle given a chord length and height," Ada said in a normal speaking volume. "This must be part of my divine power which is pretty neat. But you would think I would at least be able to teleport, fly or do something godlike? I mean -- what's the difference between my abilities and that of an idiot savant who rocks at mental calculations and memorization?"
The only reply to her question was her echo questioning back. Ada pondered as she ran towards the edge that was 412 meters away from where she stood. An average human's walking speed was 1.4 meters per second which was too slow for her. Her top running speed turned out to be 15 meters per second (34 mph) which was slightly better than the 28 mph speed of the fastest human. At this rate, she took 27 seconds to reach the wall. Even better, she didn't feel physically stressed at all after the intense sprint.
She felt mentally stressed when she saw the solid wall in front of her. She glanced left and right noting that there was also no door. Touching the wall, she felt its texture. It was smooth, hard and had no gaps. She punched the wall just to make sure it wasn't an illusion. The punch was harder than she expected but she felt no pain upon impact. She punched again and still felt no pain. Being a goddess does have its perks. Unfortunately, the wall seemed to be perfectly fine with each punch as well. Ada took a few minutes and circumnavigated the room to try to find a door. She found nothing except walls all around.
"What the f*, God?" she shouted which elicited no reply except her own echo.
"If I'm a goddess and there's no door, can't I just create a door?" she said more in frustration than in seriousness.

With no fanfare, a door appeared in front of Ada. She stood in awe for a moment at the immense beauty of its intricate ornate design and golden color. It looked far more beautiful than any door she has seen. However, standing there marveling at a door was the reason she made a door. Seeing that the door was wide open, she dashed out with joy and yelled, "Finally! Freedom at last!"
Though her eyes took no time to adjust to the bright sunlight, she took a mental check on her surroundings. She was standing on a sea of clouds that appeared to be quite solid. In the distance, there were more clouds though none had a palace. The sun was far above her head, a yellow star similar if not identical to Earth's sun. Peering over the edge of her cloud, she saw clumps of brown, green and blue indicative of continents and oceans.
"Explore palace. Check. Explore cloud. Check. Explore world. In progress," she rattled off her mental checklist.
After a brief internal debate on whether she should stay here and uncover more of her powers in the safety of her home, she shrugged her shoulders and smiled with excitement, "I know God said to be careful but I'm not just going to sit here in an empty palace by myself. Let's create a glider, airplane or a ladder and do some exploring!"

The Perks of Immortality
This story will no longer be updated. After living decades and dying hundreds of times, Kegan has learned that he has finally passed some test that the cruel spirit had given him. Now, Kegan has the ability to gain “perks” that can make his life much easier. He is looking forward to finally having an easy life with the new perks he has earned. Rules to keep me honest for the perk system: Spoiler: Spoiler 1. The purpose of perks is to help the MC live longer and do new things each life. 2. The perks can be unlocked by getting hurt or killed. 3. The perks can be unlocked by putting in a lot of effort that isn’t easily duplicated in a new life. 4. Perks are generally beneficial enhancements to the MC’s body. 5. Perk costs can be lowered with more impressive achievements to unlock them. 6. Perk costs can be lowered by repeated death or injury from something the perk protects against. 7. Perk costs are increased for quality of life improvements that don’t benefit survival. I want to avoid one of the pitfalls I see for other LitRPG stories where the game elements barely relate to the story, or offer very little information. If people are skipping over and not reading the perks then I'm doing things wrong. So I promise to try and make the perks interesting, sometimes humorous, informative, and relevant to the story.Cover art by http://dertypaws.com/

Far beneath the surface of a planet wrapped in a toxic atmosphere, competing political ideologies stare each other down over a heavily militarised line that cuts through the city on their border. Among the dark rail tunnels and mine shafts are an unfinished treaty up for negotiation; a fanatical terrorist group with questionable backers; and ordinary people caught in the middle. In this claustrophobic environment, those who desire peace must act quickly or these tunnels will collapse in the fires of war. _____ This story is based on a role-playing map game I GM'd awhile ago. The four main characters are based on the four players from that map game, and the general sequence of events follows the game as well.
