Chapter 17 – Merchant Quest: Visit the Local Chamber of Commerce
Skimming through the currency tutorial, Daniel closed the window and accepted the king’s visiting ceremony quest, waiting in line behind several other new players to take a pamphlet from a stack of papers to the right of the bulletin board.
[You have accepted the task quest: King’s visitation ceremony]
[Penalty for failure: none.]
[Attend the King’s visitation parade in Raskal in 4:51:02. The king, queen, and royal retinue will be present. The parade will begin on the main street at Raskal’s northern gate.]
From his understanding of games, this was one of those beginner freebie quests that gave a decent amount of starting experience and gold. Of course, he could be wrong just like in the tutorial, but if it turned out to be a normal event, then it would be a nice way to see a lore building cutscene and collect a newbie bounty.
He had enough adventure for now, narrowly escaping a flesh eating Anndr, a giant spider, and even a level 500 stone colossus. For now, regular beginner quests were on the menu.
The king’s visiting ceremony quest began in roughly four to five hours, giving Daniel ample time to continue exploring the outpost city of Raskal. Grabbing one of the pamphlets as a group of college aged female rookie adventurers waited impatiently behind him, Daniel pulled on his hood slightly to adjust Aerie’s position and further conceal her.
The brand on his chest still stung quite a bit, but that was an inconvenience that Daniel would gladly pay for gaining access to the knight. Having an autonomous pawn under his control that he could move around and direct as needed fit the commander-type combat playstyle that he developed from previous games. If only there was a way to gain more soldiers… then he could unleash his full potential on the battlefield as a strategic commander.

Granted, he only had one soldier to his name so far. But describing the knight as an ordinary soldier was a disservice. With some more leveling, and a better set of equipment, the knight could develop to become a raid boss by himself.
In addition to the pamphlet about the visiting ceremony quest, Daniel took another quest slip, for a relatively simple task.
[Fetch quest: Speak to the noble woman sitting outside of her apartment to begin the quest. Directions will be provided on the map. Expertise required: none.]
Checking the map of Raskal, Daniel found a large indicator of where he should go. It seemed rather obvious, but he expected a beginner fetch quest to be straightforward.
With the map of Raskal open, Daniel made his way down the main street, squeezing through crowds of citizens and players, passing by numerous shops selling all sorts of baubles and bits. A bustling ambience lay upon the city streets, giving off a sense of home and hearth. Daniel looked forward to revisiting this outpost city using a hearthstone recall after a long adventure.
As he brushed past a shop, a notification appeared on Daniel’s screen for a brief moment. Two steps later, and the notification disappeared.
“Huh?” Daniel muttered.
He backtracked two steps, and the notification reappeared. It seemed that he could only see the notification when he was within range of a shop.
[Introduction to the merchant class.]
[Haul Backpack Tutorial]
Greetings, adventurer. The merchant class you have chosen has a secondary inventory known as the [Haul Backpack], which allows you to carry large, heavy, or numerous items that would not fit into your normal inventory ordinarily.
When you add an item into the [Haul Backpack], a physical backpack will appear on your back. The size of this backpack can change depending on the size and weight of its storage.

Beware, aspiring merchant! The [Haul Backpack] is not protected by the same laws that protect your personal inventory. Looters and bandits may steal your wares. It is recommended to hire bodyguards when transporting valuable goods across dangerous lands.
[Introduction to merchant class.]
[Merchant Rank Tutorial.]
Greetings, adventurer. As a merchant class, you are given certain benefits from making transactions. After registering as a merchant at your local chamber of commerce, you will receive a merchant rank that starts at level 1. As your merchant rank grows, you will gain access to benefits including discounts at the city’s trading post, access to intel, priority access at the auction, and more.
[Merchant Quest: Visit the local Chamber of Commerce.]
As an aspiring merchant, it is important that you familiarize yourself with the local chamber of commerce.
Daniel’s interest was immediately piqued. Opening up the map of Raskal, he reconfigured his waypoint from the noble woman’s fetch quest to the city’s chamber of commerce.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
