《Flight of The Draykes》Chapter 182 - Studies (Part 4)

After the lesson was over, we filed out of the Etiquette and Oratory classroom and headed to the Herbology and Potioneering classroom, that was easily recognizable by the blackened students coming out of the building, which was still spewing pungent smoke out into the community.
Greeting the unfortunate victims who turned to us with blank expressions, we marched to our own fates with gritted teeth.
The gritted teeth lasted until we caught sight of the last one to come out of the classroom.
For lo-and-behold, it was our Chief Maiden who right now looked wild-eyed with fierce eyes staring out from a soot filled face as our jaws fell and laughter abounded.
Spitting out the words, she said, “I remember each one of you Balakashes who laughed, and tonight… Tonight, there shall be combat training.” And then she marched away as powder fell to the floor behind her.
Silenced, we looked at each other in consternation before we stepped over the threshold and into the classroom, where we promptly gagged as the smells mixed together to form an almost toxic miasma.
Waving at us cheerfully, the Herbology and Potioneering teacher greeted us as he said, “Excellent first class. We usually don’t get to the explosions until much later.”
Looking at us carefully, he appeared a little disappointed as he said, “Though it would be alright if you can make the tubes shake at least.”
Mentally, we thought that wasn’t this supposed to be Herbology and Potioneering? Why did this seem more like disaster creation 101?
Then suddenly the words that the teacher had said before floated into our heads. “Do pay attention because you’ll have to test the potions you create on yourself.”
Trembling, we looked at each other as our resolve to pay attention to the class grew stronger by leaps and bounds.

Seating ourselves, we watched as the teacher bustled around and piles of materials appeared in front of us, along with mixing bowls and tubes.
Looking questioningly at the teacher, I opened my mouth before I closed it; the question hanging on my lips.
However, it seemed as though the teacher had understood us as he nodded at us and said, “This is one subject where the Academy is very generous. Very generous indeed. It gives you unlimited herbs and apparatuses for you to experiment with.”
Pausing, he added quickly as he turned to fiddle around with a beaker on the test, “Of course, it also keeps a tab on how many resources you consume.”
Turning back to us, he smiled brightly as he finished by saying, “The repayment terms are also quite decent. 5 years, 10 years, 15 years… and so on.”
Gulping, I raised a hand and asked, “Those years… what do they mean?”
Peering at me, the teacher said, “Why, those are the years that you will have to serve the academy for!”
Wide eyed, we stared at the man as he absent-mindedly said, “Oh, of course you can always pay gold to them. They love gold, they do.” He added as he bustled around the classroom again.
Heading back to the front of the classroom, he said, “Those papers I’ve given you are the instructions. They also have illustrations of what the herbs are supposed to be.”
As we picked up the papers and read the instructions; we paled further because they were as good as gibberish to us.
Raising a paper, one of the students asked, “Sir... We… I can’t read.”
Nodding, the teacher said, “That’s perfectly alright. Just sit with the ones who can.”
Soon, we were reshuffled as desks were joined together.

Looking at my teammate, who was looking apprehensively at the pile of ingredients, I said comfortingly, “It won’t be that bad. I have experience in making potions.”
Looking at me hopefully, he asked, “You do?”
Nodding confidently, I said, “I do.”
Two hours later, we walked out of the classroom with faces blackened and heads low.
Mine was the lowest as my teammate looked at me accusingly with a wronged expression.
Mine brightened though as I saw Apollo who was clutching his sides and laughing as he looked at my face and my uniform, which smelled foul.
Grinning at him, I gestured to the classroom behind me as I said, “Don’t laugh too much. It’s your turn now.”
Stiffening up as he realized the same fact, his face cramped as he asked weakly, “I don’t suppose we can call in sick?”
Smiling widely, I said, “The chief maiden went through that, and we are supposed to join her for combat training in the night. Miss that class and I’ll recommend your name to be the first in line for her to practice with.”
Paling, Apollo cried out, “You wouldn’t dare!”
As flakes fell from my hair, I flung my sleeves as I said, “I would, and I would do it a hundred times over if you miss that class.”
Dignifiedly, I made my exit only to freeze as feverish red eyes met mine.
“Welcome… to our class on the language of war!” the owner of those red eyes said before he coughed and said, “I mean… the language of whatsitsname.”
Looking back and meeting Apollo’s eyes, eyes which were right now looking at me with schadenfreude… I thought that perhaps… just perhaps… Joining this Academy wasn’t the best decision.
But a moment later, the choice was taken out of my hands as burly hands reached out and dragged us inside the classroom.

Yashima Chronicles
The island nation of Yashima is in chaos. Armies march to war, pitting cousin against cousin in the fight for power. Sword saints hone their craft in battle, growing more deadly even as the tide of muskets flooding the country make the average soldier ever more dangerous. One woman towers over the era. Known as the blood-soaked flower of the battlefield, it is said that to see her is to risk madness. To fight her is to die. Some even say she draws her power from the blood of vanquished foes. Listening to the rumors, I can't help but feel that my plan to secure a comfortable administrative post has somehow gone awry.
8 200Protagonist: The Whims of Gods
Book one now also on Amazon! After quitting her job as a therapist and grabbing some work at a dog shelter, Tess's life became pretty slow. A tad boring, even. It thus came as no small surprise when she was chosen by a god. Thrust into a new world where magic, monsters, and character levels are suddenly a reality, Tess will quickly find that just surviving can be a challenge. It doesn't help that dark forces are stirring, she's woefully underpowered, and that spiders keep trying to claw her face off. One thing's for certain, though: The possibilities are endless. Will she end up wrestling a dragon? Becoming an arch-mage? Opening a quaint, bookstore, coffee shop, and wine bar for elves? The choice is hers... As long as she can live long enough to make it. Protagonist is a fairly classic LitRPG novel with character levels, classes, stats, settlements, and other LitRPG elements. Unlike a lot of LitRPG stories, while the protagonist has some perks, she doesn't start off overpowered. You can expect to see her struggle as she advances. This novel also takes the opportunity to explore some less frequently seen builds, shying away from any min-maxing. Chapters are about ~2000-3000 words and are released at 8:00am ET every other day.
8 4856The Book of Rune
If you like moderately well-researched semi-medieval military logistics with some fantasy twists, and also conspiracy, and exploration, and violence, and maybe a dash of road movie, hey, Ruen just might be your thing. Plot-wise, basically there's a guy who got fired by Death, a kid with pyrotechnic tendencies, and a slave general who wouldn't mind retiring but ended up on a mass suicide mission. If you were looking for a less TL;DR version, a guy who got fired by Death meets a kid with pyrotechnic tendencies, and they try to get the guy un-fired while also trying to come to terms with death together (ooohhhh, look, I'm deep). Meanwhile a slave general does something stupid and ends up being sent on a suicide mission, and he tries to wreak havoc and save lives at the same time. The threads come together, I swear. This is a rough draft of a fantasy semi-book that I've had in the back of my head for some time. I've written a variety of short stories set in the world over the past three years, and I finally kicked myself into writing the actual story. Very much a slow work in progress. Occasional violence (okay, well, maybe more than occasional), occasional foul language.
8 193Phantom Path
Knowledge, mysteries, and power. A group of youngsters are summoned by a figure titled "The Overseer", a mysterious man who strips them of their normal lives as teenagers. Inside his castle, gleamed by the brilliance of countless stars that dance around it as they flow in the cosmos, he sets them on a quest with these words: "You've been invited to a world, not of your own. Why? With this opportunity that I've given to you, that is a reason you will seek for yourselves. Only when you've found knowledge will you find the truth. May your journey bring good fortune, children of another world" To this world with his grand words, now will they confront their new challenges ahead, in a world filled with magic, unique personalities that share this world of fantasy, and many questions and obstacles that lie ahead. As beginners of a journey that was set upon like destiny. Into the new world.
8 74A Cursed Life.
In a continent ravaged by war between humans and magical beings, an orphan child has taken residence at the bastion of hope in the human kingdom. Though displaying incredible dexterity, his terrible luck pins him against foes he could not hope to defeat. A chance encounter with thugs leaves him stabbed and left for dead. With an intense desire to live, he awakens the innate and powerful darkness magic to bolster his life and take back what others have stolen from him. This chronicles his journey as he learns to harness his power, whether it is for good or evil, you'll have to read and find out. To everyone interested in this story, I have every intention to finish it, but chapters will be very slow since I am going to college. If my studies allow me any spare time I will update the story and write a new chapter.

“… to grow, for opportunity, for adventure, to be free. Join the colony ship Nao Vittoria. Be the first to live amongst the stars.” It was obvious from the literature that the NextStar corporation wanted the young, the adventurous and the brilliant. So why were the super rich fighting over seats? Why were AI’s trying to stow away? Did this signify a premature end to human/AI civilisation? Why had some questions directed to NextStar been aggressively sidelined? Why did the colonist inflight entertainment trial produce fatalities? In fact, why colonists at all? Those and many other questions, however, boiled down to a single central question. Why was the world’s most advanced AI dumped with a hundred year babysitting job for 50 million people speeding towards an uninhabitable planet? It made such little sense. The only sure way to get answers, catch a ride on the Nao Vittoria and play the inflight entertainment game, Pax Domini. I joined, and this is my story. Well, I feature. OK, I’m more of a spectator. Actually, I’m completely irrelevant I was just there. I’m only the storyteller. But what a story to tell. --------- Hi All, Content will be published weekly usually Saturday and typical posts will be 25oo to 4ooo words per post. Though for some reason the Royal Road word count does not include the content of tables so some posts may not appear to meet this criteria. Currently I have written sufficient unedited content to keep this schedule for the next 12 months (half way through the first story arc). My current productivity would indicate that I can maintain this schedule for well into the second story arch. This also allows for the additional content that will be posed exclusively on Patreon (https://www.patreon.com/StoriesOfIndlu). This additional content follows minor characters, peripheral events, maps and other content that does not take away from the main story. I would love to accelerate the post schedule but to meet this I need the assistance of more beta readers than I currently have. So please let me know if you are interested. - Andy ©2022 Andy Leauter.
