《Young Adversary》233rd Adversary: Reaper’s Origin

Red Light District. Miko was walking the streets with a smile on his face.
“Don, good morning.”
“Good morning, Don.”
He was greeted by the citizens that saw him.
“After witnessing you repelling Jin and Kaido’s forces, it seems that everyone believes that they can take it easy with you here.”
Luka, who was walking beside him also had a smile on her face.
“I heard that you were their symbol of hope while I was gone. They were drawn to you by your kind nature. It’s completely different from my method of using fear and force to bend their will.”
“I had more time, so I was able to do it.”
Miko shook his head.
“It’s just the difference in how we do things.”
He smiled at her.
“Having people like you around me prevents me from becoming a full-blown villain.”
“….I don’t think you’ll ever become a villain.”
“Why’s that?”
“Because I won’t let you. Even if you do, I’ll do everything in my power to stop you.”
“And you think you can? Even after seeing what I’m capable of?”
“No matter how strong you become, I’ll be right there chasing after you. If you become the ultimate evil I will become the ultimate good. Either way, I won’t let you go.”
“And what if I kill everyone you cared about? Like your apostles for one?”
Luka at Miko’s face. His usual smile was on his face so it hard to figure out what he was thinking.
“….If that does happen, I’m sure that I will want to kill you more than anyone else.”
“So, can you do it? Can you kill me?”
“Yes.”
“No hesitation huh? I like that.”
Miko started laughing.
“I can kill you in a heartbeat because I’m certain that I would join you in death immediately after.”
Miko’s laughter stopped and he became silent. This caused Luka to take a look at his face. Her eyes widened and she halted her steps. Miko continued to walk as if he hadn’t noticed.
“…………”
She stared as his back as he continued to walk the streets.
“I haven’t seen him that angry in a long time. Why?”
She watched him for a bit longer and followed behind him.
This world has been at war for longer than anyone can remember. There have been moments of peace but that would always come to an end. The Battle For Supremacy, which was a war to decide the next Supreme Being, was just another chapter in the book known as Eternal Wars.
In some places of the world, war was an everyday occurrence. Death was to be expected. Destruction was a way of life. Such a place existed on the eastern end of the Golden Continent. This place was known as Corpse Hill. It was a place that didn’t qualify as a country, but a mere battlefield. It was a den for warriors who were bred for war because of the harsh conditions there. The sky was red because of the high level of malice and resentment that gathered there over the millennia, which corrupted the mana and altered the natural balance of nature. The ground was blood-colored because of the countless rivers of blood that flowed there and permanently stained the lands. The stench of death was thick in the air; so much that it was natural for one to vomit when they breathed in the air for the first time.
In such a place, the sound of a baby’s cry resounded from under the corpse of a woman. A couple who were mercenaries came across such a scene. After contemplating it for a while, they lifted the corpse and looked at the crying baby. This baby was beautiful with a head of gray hair and blue eyes. Seeing such a beautiful baby all alone crying in a wasteland, the couple decided to take the baby back with them to their home. This wasn’t the first time the couple has done this. They previously took in three girls on three different occasions. The girls had all lost their families and had no one to take care of them. The couple just couldn’t leave them like that, so they adopted them.

“Since we already have three girls back home, I don’t think another would make a difference?”
Said the woman.
“I agree.”
The man took up the baby.
“Hm?.....Its a boy?”
“Huh?”
This was how the baby was taken in by his guardians.
The years rolled by and the baby grew into an energetic young boy, who loved to play with his siblings. This boy was given the name Kylie because of his personality, which was negative at one point and positive the next. Because of this personality trait, he reminded the couple of a boomerang (Kylie). The other children they took in from oldest to youngest were called Jasmine, Ingrid, and Nordia. The girls all showed strong affections for Kylie from a very young age, and he also felt the same about them. However, as they lived in a war zone everything wasn’t just fun and games. The couple, who were called Lacie and Glen, knew that the world was a harsh place and started training the kids from the time they could walk in combat, magic, weaponry, and warfare.
Of course, Kylie was no exception. It was one of their normal days of training. Kylie and the youngest girl, Nordia were having their first spare. Nordia was chosen as his first opponent because she was the closest to his age, as she was estimated to be two years older than him.
“Are you two ready?”
Asked Lacie, who was severing as the referee.
“Yes!”
Kylie answered energetically.
“Y-Yes.”
While Nordia was a bit timider in comparison.
“Okay! Start!”
At the signal, Kylie was the first to rush forward and attack Nordia.
He jumped and threw a kick towards her. She rolled to the side and dodged it before slamming her palm in his side.
*Bam!*
Kylie was blown away to the side and rolled on the ground a couple of times.
“Good counter, Nordia.”
Glen, who was spectating praised.
“T-Thanks!”
Feeling a bit more motivated Nordia rushed forward and attacked Kylie again.
“Ow,ow,ow. That hurt.”
Kylie got up while rubbing his side.
He failed to react to Nordia’s attack and was hit square in the face.
“Blegh?!”
He was comically blown back again and bounced off the ground a couple of times.
He held his face and cried in a funny manner.
“Um…”
Seeing that, Nordia didn’t know what to do.
“Nordia, ceasing from attacking an opponent in the heat of battle because of pity is the most foolish thing you can ever do.”
Said, Lacie.
“Y-Yes!”
Lacie then looked at Kylie.
“Kylie, can you continue?”
“O-Of course!”
Kylie responded while wiping the tears from his eyes.
Lacie nodded.
“Continue!”
Nordia once again charged towards Kylie. Seeing that, Kylie instinctively stepped back.
‘I don’t want to get hit again, it hurts too much! If only it didn’t hurt then maybe I could win!’
He shouted in his mind.
He ran forward and threw a wide punch. Nordia stooped under it and thrust her palm towards his chin.
“Uwaa!”
Kylie cried out as he saw the strike getting closer.
It was then he underwent a sudden change.
“?!”
Both Lacie and Glen were shocked at what they just witnessed. Nordia’s palm hit Kylie under the chin, but he wasn't blown away like the other times. In fact, his body didn’t even flinch as if he didn’t receive an ounce of damage. But that wasn’t what surprised the two, what they were shocked about was the change in Kylie’s appearance. His grey hair was now as black as the darkest night, and so was his eyes which were weirdly lifeless like a dead fish’s. His body was surrounded by a dark and gloomy aura, and just staring at made one felt they were staring into an abyss.

“Hm? Did you hold back, Nordia?”
Kylie looked at her and asked with a gloomy voice.
“Was I so pathetic that you need to hold back?"
“Ah, no. I hit you with everything I had.”
Nordia replied.
"It’s alright. There’s no need to lie to me when I barely felt a thing."
Kylie suddenly sighed and spoke with a lazy tone.
“I guess I’m just worthless as a sparring partner. I guess I’ll just go and sleep forever.”
His tone became more depressing by the word.
“Mama, papa. What’s wrong with Kylie?”
Asked the oldest daughter Jasmine.
“He’s always had his negative spells, but this is too much.”
The second daughter, Ingrid added.
“I’m not sure.”
Said, Lacie. They all stared at Kylie weirdly. This was how the Reaper displayed signs of awakening at the tender age of 5.
*************
Days passed and after much experiment, Lacie and Glen were able to determine just what happened Kylie when he sparred against Nordia. They learned that he was an Inborn Ability user. They explained to Kylie what he was which confused him at first, but he became ecstatic when he was told that he was special and his type of people mostly grew to become powerful warriors on the battlefield. Glen and Lacie experimented quite a bit with his powers and determined that it was a defensive ability that negates all attacks to a certain extent.
“It’s not just defensive!”
“What do you mean, jasmine?”
The eldest daughter Jasmine hesitated before speaking.
“Yesterday, I brought Kylie on a walk….”
“You couldn’t have left our protective barrier, right?”
Lacie said with a glare.
“You can get mad at her later. Jasmine, continue. What happened?”
Said Glen.
“We were attacked by some robbers…”
“What?! Which gang was it?! I’ll beat them into paste for trying touch my daughters!”
Glen suddenly started raging.
“Calm down, Glen and let her finish. And Kylie is a boy, don’t run away from reality.”
Said, Lacie.
“What happened when you were attacked?”
“I don’t know if it was because he got scared, but Kylie activated his power and burnt them all with a black flame.”
“What? Is that true?”
Jasmine nodded.
“The strangest thing was although the fire turned the robbers to ash when it touched me I didn’t feel a thing, not even my clothes were burnt.”
After hearing what jasmine said, Lacie and Glen became both shocked and curious. They immediately asked Kylie to activated his power and try to summon the black flame again, which he succeeded in doing. They then placed their hand into the fire without even the slightest hesitation.
“It isn’t hot.”
Glen muttered.
He then asked Kylie if when he made the fire did he have any intention of hurting them. Of course, Kylie replied with a no. After thinking for a while, he then ordered him to think about hurting them with the fire; to which Kylie immediately rejected.
“I can’t possibly burn you two with fire. You’ll die.”
The couple found it a bit weird that a mere 5-year-old child had enough confidence to kill them. Especially, when that child looked as gloomy as he did now.
“Then try warming our hands. You can do that right?”
“I’ll try.”
The moment he said that the couple finally felt some heat from the fire. They moved their hands back and saw that the flames had attached itself to them. They tried to extinguish them with magic but found that the flames simply devoured their magic. This greatly alarmed them. They immediately knew that this flame wasn’t something to be underestimated.
“Kylie, can you remove this flame from us?”
Asked Lacie.
Kylie replied with a nod.
And then, in an instant, the flames extinguished.
After experiencing Kylie’s flames, the way the couple looked at him changed slightly.
“This boy might become a monster one day.”
They thought and couldn’t help but smile proudly at their son’s achievement. They soon learn that the term “monster” was the perfect description for their son.
It was a couple of years later, an 8-year-old Kylie was sparring against 12-year jasmine. It was an intense spare between young talents. Kylie who was now well versed in combat was the one on the offensive. He spun a pole in his hand while thrusting it towards jasmine from unpredictable angles. Jasmine blocked the strikes with her bare hands and rushed towards with her fists covered in raw mana. Kylie thrust his pole again but jasmine destroyed it with a punch and whipped her leg against his face.
“Tsk! That cheating ability!”
Kylie activated his night form and negated Jasmine's attack. However-
“That’s what I was waiting for!”
Jasmine’s fist was suddenly covered in golden mana.
“That’s mama’s!”
Kylie paled when he saw the golden mana and tried to escape.
“Too late!”
Jasmine’s speed increased explosively and started to rain punches on Kylie like a storm. Kylie was immediately overwhelmed and was completely blown away. Kylie’s defense was nowhere near invincible. All one had to do to beat it was to continuously attack until he couldn't absorb any more damage. Jasmine naturally came to learn this weakness after sparring against him countlessly times.
“Do you give up?
Jasmine asked with a mocking tone. She was the tomboy of the three daughters, who took after Lacie despite not being related by blood.
“Like hell I do! If I lose I’ll have to listen to what you say for a whole week!”
Kylie, who returned to his base form of grey hair and blue eyes shouted desperately. He still remembered the hell jasmine put him through the last time she won. He quickly tried to think of a way to win without using his midnight flames. The Midnight Flames could be controlled so that they wouldn’t destroy indiscriminately, but they lacked the needed firepower to win when under control. Kylie suddenly felt he needed a different approach that was far more versatile in battle.
“Hm?”
That’s when Jasmine noticed something strange about Kylie. He was starting to glow. Her eyes then widen when Kylie's appearance changed into something she’s never seen before. His hair turned an illuminating white that shone like the sun. His eyes started glowing like miniature stars. His entire existence was like a celestial being.
“Hahaha! This will do! This will do fine!”
Kylie shouted with an energetic voice. What Jasmine remembered after that was only being devoured by a light before losing consciousness.
After Kylie revealed another form it was naturally investigated by his parents. They determined that this form was also an Inborn ability, which caused them great headache. It meant that he was born with two unique abilities, which was unheard of. They also determined that this form was opposite to his previous one. While his Night form made him overly negative, this form made him overly positive and energetic. His powers were also very versatile and hard to compete against if you were on the same level as him. Even those stronger would find it difficult to defend against. This was because in this form he was like a literal sun and could control all aspects concerning a sun. In other words, Gravity, light, flames, magnetism, electricity, and life to a certain extent, all these powers were his to wield when in this form. That’s why they decided to name this form, Day Form to keep it simple.
At the tender age of 8, Kylie had awoken two powers that were priceless by themselves, much less if they were able to be combined. However, he had yet to know that great power tends to bring calamity on those who wield them.
“Ahhh!”
Jin woke up screaming and flew out of bed. He looked around and saw that he was in his room. He was breathing heavily and images started flashing in his head. It was images of dead bodies, destroyed lands, and blood. A memory of him holding onto cold blood-stained hands started playing in his head. A gray murky aura started leaking out of his body.
“Calm down, calm down.”
He touched a necklace that was around his neck, which had three rings on it and squeezed them tightly.
“I’m calm, I’m calm, I’m calm.”
He took several deep breaths until his heart rate returned to normal.
“Goddammit. If I’m having visions of the past again that means that I’m seriously afraid of what might happen to Bloom and Sapphire if I lose this war.”
He became silent for a bit before a look of resignation appeared on his face.
“If I don’t want a repeat of the past, I’ll have to use everything I have.”
His eyes sharpened.
“I’ll use everything at my disposal; even my Ecliptic Form.”

You have such an amazing way to make the words flow and unbelievable descriptions. Unique characters and a great story line. All the small clues and mystery in the humor and fantasy just makes the book perfect in my opinion. I read all chapters in two days! Less than 48 hours even! I'm REALLY looking forward to the next update, the world of Aethernea is so deep and well thought out, it's beautiful and magical. God I can't believe how creative you are, so many small details with so many families and stories everywhere. Purely fantastical, I admire you." - astro-logical from Wattpad "I love love love Aethernea so much! It is amazing how you created this new world with different creatures, magics, looks, illnesses, and evil! I was blown away by your explanation of the Mana pools and how to weave magic! Simply stunning really! You are one of my favorite authors and Wattpad and I am so glad I stumbled upon Aethernea because it is worth all of my time reading!" - Adriana_V_Blade from Wattpad "I absolutely am loving Aethernea so far. I am certain you belong in the ranks among J.K. Rowling, Rick Riordan, Suzane Collinings, and many more great and wonderful authors. You opened up a whole new world for me, which only a few great authors have accomplished. While it's true I am pulled into each and every book, few are able to capture me to the point of inescapability. Though, somehow, you have managed this feat. I thank you for this and more! You are a wonderful author and can't wait for more to come!" - daughterofpercabeth7 from Wattpad "WOW! just caught Aethernea in gravity tales! Just when I was getting tired of most xianxia novels this appears and completely blows my mind! I really like the depth and the humorous touch you give the characters and it seems you have the storyline well thought out since you are always hinting about things in the past and the future. It has been such an enjoyable experience that I couldn't stop reading, finishing it in just one day and laughing my way through most of the episodes. But what keeps me so excited for what's coming is the magic system and the professions of the world you are creating. The magic mechanics have such a huge potential! They are simple but at the same time they open so many possibilities. Even though we still only understand the basics of transmutation and augmentation, I expect them to enable fights where there is need of quick thinking and skill, and not just brainless overpower of every opponent. In a way this makes me reminiscent about The Mistborn Series by Brandon Sanderson, which are one of my favorite series ever. The thing that sets Mistborn apart from any other series is that the mechanics are so well thought out that they could be used to create a super cool triple A video game and I cannot help but hope Aethernea reaches the same level or even surpass it. I really think it has that potential. Really hope this series gets the attention it deserves. As for me, Thursdays and Sundays just got a whole more exciting! =)" - AlexMLion "Your writing is fantastic and riveting, the chapters and character flow so smooth, and it captivates the reader with the many twist and turns that tricks one mind into thinking this is about to happen, when suddenly the exact opposite happens. You truly are in inspirational writer with a brilliant mind that can see and put words into chapters and into this one truly awesome book. Thank you!" - AshleyStaar from Wattpad "I loved this story, such detailed description and accurate words, both Kiel and Elaru completely caught my attention, your writing style is just beautiful and the plot is astounding and it's just the first episode! This kind of fantasy stories are my favourite, it has a lot of magic in it, rivalry and sense of humour." - BlackWhiteD from Wattpad
