《Celestial Magus》Chapter 28 : After the battle

Robert stood in atop the building, gazing in the direction that Yuuma had flown away to. Robert had seen what happened at the back gates of the castle and wished that he had moved a few more cannons to there. He expected the experts that were hit by the cannon would be enraged and retaliate, but they retreated quickly. Probably because they didn’t know if there were more of these fire spitting weapons preparing to attack them.
He climbed down the building and walked towards the castle, where the militiamen were celebrating their victory. He didn’t forget to send a messenger to the Greyston to share this good news.
Reaching the castle, there was two news waiting for him. The first was that they were able to capture Yugimi and his followers alive, the second was something disturbing, very disturbing. They had found a mass grave beside the castle, a large well that was filled with human bodies. There was a newly dug well besides it and a place where it was covered with fresh dirt. The guess of how many men had been buried there was in the range of thousands.
Robert saw the scene and was filled with anger and anguish, these were innocent citizens, thousands of them, dead! He had killed people before, he had indirectly helped to kill men, but they were not civilians, they were men who signed up for it knowing the danger. Even in this world where the treaties like Geneva convention doesn’t exist, civilians were left unharmed during wartimes. But here they were lying dead, in in a pit, massacred, treated like they were cattle.
Robert didn’t know them, he was not even from this world, but seeing this scene, he was angry. He couldn’t save them, there was nothing he could do about what had happened, but he still felt responsible. If he had the power to not retreat, if he had the strength to stand head to head with those experts, this wouldn’t have happened.

He didn’t shed any tears, he knew tears were meaningless. He still had the memory of Riley being tortured to death by that old bald man. And now he saw what will happen if that maniac was let to live any longer. He had already taken a pledge to exact revenge for Riley, but now he had one more reason to do it. To save these innocent people from that monster.
The celebrations were still going on, the oppressed people of Goldfair city was throwing parties at every other street. Inviting heroes to their homes, gifting them flowers. The remaining members of the large families came to visit Robert to express their thanks and to see what their future holds. But was made to wait in the castle hall as Robert was somewhere else.
Robert was down in the basement of the castle, the air reeked blood and a depressing aura was in the air. In a small cell of the castle prison that the Snake skull used to torture men, the leader of Snake skulls was sitting in a chair. Instead of the torturer's role that he usually played, now he was the victim of the torture. Robert wanted to extract as much as information from him. Yugimi had already begged for his life and answered all of Robert’s queries even before he was tortured. But Robert wanted him to suffer and thus arranged for someone to torture him.
“Yuuma, so that is your name,” Robert said to himself.
After understanding Yuuma’s objective and how he was nearing success, Robert heaved a sigh. That madman already is powerful, if he gets more power what will happen?
Robert also understood one thing, the method Yuuma was using was the same as what he had discovered. But without the knowledge for separating the magic cells from the blood, the foreign blood cells was causing a reaction in his body and thus making him lose his vitality. And this man Yuuma was not trying to remove the poison from the blood, instead, he was trying to absorb the vitality of other humans to increase his own.

What if he perfects his method? Wouldn’t he be able to use all the elements of magic? And his power level was already so high, what kind of power will he possess then?
Robert left the management of the city and the future of the captives to manager Naoki as he was more knowledgeable about this world.
Naoki was more than happy to take over the management of the city. This man truly loved scolding and swearing at people. This was the highest position of power that he had held yet and he was overjoyed. He also felt relieved that the city was now liberated from the Snake skulls.
The next day Sophy arrived and took charge of the city, she was so happy that Robert was able to capture the city with only a couple of casualties. She knew that he would be able to capture the city, but had been expecting more casualties in the battle against the experts.
She felt like shedding a tear of joy when she took over the city. This was the first time that she had gained true power. From the moment Her father’s brother took over the clan, she was sidelined from any positions of power and even exiled to this city. Now she had someplace that was of herself.
Robert hesitated to take all credit, he claimed it was all due to the valor of the militiamen and luck that he was able to complete the mission without much trouble.
He described the battle in vivid detail to Sophy and Naoki, he was the one who had the perfect view of the whole picture and described in vivid detail how the battle had taken place. But as he was describing the part where the giant raven appeared and Yuuma escaped by flying away, Sophy and Naoki both frowned.
Spirit birds were known for their agility, and accuracy of their attacks, but what they lack the most in is its defense. It had a reason, the birds, to be able to fly must have light bodies, and light bodies meant less armor to protect them. There was also the size of the raven, birds tend to be small in size, even the largest bird that Sophy had seen in the capital was unable to carry a human. Where and how Yuuma was able to get this bird? How was he able to find a way to increase his vitality by sucking it from others? The questions were numerous.

Epoch: An NPC's Tale
Epoch is a slow-burn LitRPG/Gamelit novel that tells the story of Luke, later named Lucius—a natural inhabitant of the game-like realm of Elyssia where thousands upon thousands of detached, virtually unkillable entities known as the Players were suddenly introduced right after the dusk of the magnificent Age of Heroes. Shortly after the Players arrived, the balance of power in Elyssia instantly shifted. Kingdoms fell, wars were waged, alliances between races were made, and Lucius, after ten years of training in captivity, found himself being used as a pawn in a prophecy that he had no intention to fulfill. With aspirations and desires of his own, Lucius must find a way to cautiously adapt to the drastic changes in the very foundations of the realm after being sent 300 years into a future that was forever altered by the outcome of the war that his captors had lost and the Players won in a victory that resounded throughout the ages, all for a terrible price. Author's Note As an avid fan of the LitRPG genre myself, I wrote this novel with character progression, heavy Gamelit elements, and some degree of world-building in mind. If you like these, please feel free to give this novel a try. Oh, and the MC is also an NPC, in a sense. And wait, isn't this also an isekai story? Well, it's all a bit complicated to explain here. Maybe you should start reading now?
