《I'm Just the Guard!》12: Taking Care of Business

As Crystal and I walked back to our posts, I told her I was really disappointed with her performance.
"We're going to have to work on your aim," I said. "And you need to learn to pay attention to my signals."
She frowned at me. "You didn't tell me about any signals."
"Ah. That's true. We're going to need to work out a lot of things, then. First off, we need to find your spear."
We stopped, looked at the ground, and immediately stopped trying.
"It's fine," she said. "I can probably take care of myself with magic. [Fire Bolt] only costs 5 MP and has a short, 5-second cooldown."
We reached the wall, standing at her post. I didn't want to leave my only conversation partner just yet, so I stuck around and asked more questions. "Your spells have a cooldown?"
"I'm pretty sure skills do, too. Wouldn't really be fair if they didn't."
Scratching at my chin - and noticing for the first time that I had a beard, which was cool - I nodded to myself. That made sense. "Huh. Well, I pretty much always died after a fight, so I never noticed."
She scoffed. "And you have the nerve to tell me that I need work?"
"Yeah, well, I had to fight higher leveled opponents on my own!"
We bickered a bit more, tossing insults about each other's equally poor - mine was slightly less poor, in my humble opinion - fighting capabilities before we fell silent.
For having a friendly interaction with another NPC, you have gained +2 Charisma.
I looked at Crystal. "It turns out talking to you isn't all that useless."
She snorted. "Didn't you say we had a lot of things to work on?"

"Yes, that's right! Let's see...First off, I think we need to make signals."
I held up my hand and crossed two fingers - my index and my middle. "That's our signal for when you should fire."
Crystal shook her head, leaning back against the wall. "No, that's too hard to see. Especially in all this snow."
"Okay, fine." I made a fist. "How about this?"
She jogged a few feet away, turned around, and looked at me. After a minute, she nodded and jogged back over. "I can see it as long as you don't run off too far."
Grimacing, I said we'll have to train her Agility up more. She paled at that, to my absolute delight.
"For now, though, we're going to work on your accuracy."
"How are we going to do that?"
I looked across the snow plain ahead of us and threw out one hand. "By making snowmen!"
An hour or two and 2 Strength and Endurance - each! - gains later, we had created four lopsided and awfully terrifying snow blobs. There wasn't enough snow to make proper snowmen - shockingly - so we just rolled four big balls and left it at that.
"Alright!" I said, clapping my hands. "Here's the deal. You're going to run through the balls while I stand here and practice [Burst]. You're going to try and hit me all while running around."
"That sounds dangerous..."
"The best kind of training is the deadly kind," I informed her. "And we can't die, so what's the worry?"
She rubbed her chest, eyes glossing over as her mind took her to the past. "We can still feel pain," she murmured.
"That we can," I said. "Which is why we're training your Agility attribute; you'll get so fast that you won't get hit!"

She stared at me balefully before I shooed her off toward the balls. When both of us we're in place, I held up my hand and clenched it into a fist.
The results of our training were spectacular.

Tales of Ordinary, Completely Unremarkable Contractors
"Where life had no value, death, sometimes, had its price. That is why the mercenaries appeared." - Artur Xerxes, in A Century of Disappointment: Memoirs of a Travelling Dwarf It's never too difficult to land contracts for a set very specialised skills in a continent teeming with werewolves, vampires, giant leopards, undead and, god forbid, elves. The difficulty comes when these contractors find themselves suffocated in the dense atmosphere of this world's rigid - and mostly unfair - rules; death, suffering and misfortune await those unwilling to sacrifice to bend these in their favour. In this non-linear plot, you will observe a scarred and deformed farm girl cashing her first bounty posters, a seemingly ordinary barmaid at a tavern in the bustling centre of a sprawling, corrupt city and an enigmatic leader of a firm specialising in dealings any other would consider suicidal. Watch them all take everything to the next level at every available opportunity, and then feel dread at the thought that this still might not be enough to halt the physical embodiment of doom about to do what it does best Please, feel free to review and comment! Any sort of feedback can help me become a better writer and write more engaging stories for you. I used to update once every 3-5 days, but this rewrite is taking much too long...I do hope it will be worth it.

Decoder;Deconstructor
Arvis, A 23-year old programmer that had been hand chosen as a special operating crew for an incredibly successful game for the past 2 years has been convicted for a crime he did not comit. As for how this fraud was able to destroy his whole life in one go was something he constantly thought about, yet upon noticing a person flying around in his cell he gets thrown into another dimesion without question. Note: The story is filled with a shit-load of profanity and mild-dark/dirty humor, although it is tragedy- Which In one case it IS tragedy, I will add in lots of things will make this unlike any other type of tragic-comedic storeh.. so... Like tragedy, with a twist of Comedy, and a touch of Badassery Apart from that, The story starts off terribly, but I promise it will get better... (since I started getting better at writing)

A Nation of Distances (possibly a dystopian love story)
Michael lives in a toxic macho world with extreme male hierarchy. When he gets a weird rating that makes his place even more problematic he's forced to choose a fiancée at a Wife School, and he slowly discovers more about the other side of the great divide between the sexes in The Nation. If only the world would stop being so complicated... On the other side there's Megan, who's more interested in books than in marriage, and the unpredictable Eliza who seems to have a connection with Micheal already. Will they be able to cross the distance and become friends against all the rules of their own world, or will they just be crushed? Are positive relationships between men and women even possible? And is there a way to change the world or is that just a naive thought of a silly wimp? 'A Nation of Distances' is a slightly dystopian dialogue-heavy drama set in a low sci-fi future setting about the war between the sexes, disconnect and friendship. The genre will fluctuate in between more slice-of-life parts and soft sci-fi drama with possible romantic elements, with alternating lead and switching perspectives once more of the main characters are established. Content Warning: Certain concepts and scenes might be disturbing and/or triggering to some, even though the story itself won't be extremely heavy most of the time. Sexism as a double-edged sword destructive to both sexes is an important part of the story, but so is friendship.Note that all descriptions of persons and places are purely fictional and made up by the writer, and any resemblance with anything in the real world is a coincidence, since the real world is not supposed to be dystopian anyway!

Book 2 is available on Amazon Kindle Unlimited. The rest is available on Royal Road. If you do not have the financial means to purchase the books, then you may DM me on discord through my discord channel for a pdf version of the books. This is the first book I ever started out of my four current ongoing stories. This story has been edited through nearly a dozen times since the majority of the reviews, so take that in mind if you read through the reviews. This is a LitRPG and cultivation-based novel where the two are interlinked and the characters have to reach a certain degree of cultivation and a certain level in order to break through into the next tier. I tend to make a lot of maps for this book. I hope that you all enjoy my novel, and feel free to comment on any issues or errors you may notice. My Discord Server Top Web Novel Link
