It was easy to see which of them was the leader. He was truly massive, with long unkempt black hair that fell to his shoulders and a scraggly beard. He was also one of the few wearing more than a mere loincloth, dressed in some brown leather armor that covered him from his neck to his lower leg, but keeping his feet bare.
His weapon of choice was a bow, though I could see the handle of a sword poking over his shoulder, next to his quiver. Looking around, it seemed like the majority of the mounted goblins were equipped in much the same way, though some of them had spears in place of bows.
It was easy to tell that the leader had chosen the largest of the wolves for himself, it being about half again as big as the next one. It had pitch-black fur, though I noted that it didn’t seem to be as aggressive as I thought it might, its tongue lolling out of the side of its mouth while it stared at us. I did take note of its very large teeth, however.
With the new arrivals, there were roughly seventy goblins standing there, staring at us. They didn’t look hostile, but they could’ve been waiting for their leader to give them a command to attack. There also wasn’t a female among them, which meant that there were likely a lot more goblins nearby.
[I thought goblins were tiny! Those are freaking massive!] Mason sent.
[They’re hobgoblins,] Ben replied. [They evolve from regular goblins, but no one knows what triggers the evolution. They just go to sleep one day and then wake up several days later having grown twice as tall and being many times heavier.]
[Is this normal?] Sonja asked. [Why haven’t they attacked us yet?]
[They likely would have already if this were a normal dungeon floor. Being on a floor such as this one, perhaps they’ve learned not to attack people? It’s possible that they aren’t the most powerful creatures on this floor. I don’t know for sure.]
[They’re pretty damn creepy is what they are,] Anja sent. [I don’t like the way they’re looking at me.]
[Me neither,] her sister said.
I took a closer look at the goblins and saw that they were indeed looking at the twins. Except for the leader, at least. We made eye contact for a moment before he looked to the goblin beside him. He was dressed similarly to the Kobold Shamans on the previous floors, including a horn that was dangling from a strap that went around his neck. The two goblins exchanged words in their strange guttural language before the leader commanded his wolf to walk towards us.
Stopping halfway, he did something that shocked the hell out of us.
“Come!” he said. Without waiting, he turned around and bidded his wolf to walk back towards the forest.
“Did he just talk in English?!” Mason asked.
“Sure as hell sounded like it, unless it means something else in their language. I wonder how they would even learn English in the first place,” Ben answered. “Should we follow them?”
“I don’t think we have much choice if we want to reach the next floor,” I said, before switching back to telepathy, [Besides, we should be able to teleport back here if we need to make a quick escape. I’ll be in front, Mason you follow behind us. Anja make sure to keep Precognition active as much as you can. I don’t want any surprises. Let’s go.]

We all started back towards the forest, the goblins parting so we could walk past. The horn-bearing goblin was waiting for us, turning as we got close and leading us into the forest. The path we were following swept to the right, which would be taking us away from the entrance to this floor. After about five minutes of walking, I finally spotted the goblin leader. He was standing at the edge of a clearing.
The clearing wasn’t like the rest of the floor we had seen so far. It wasn’t green. It wasn’t thriving with life. Instead, it was the gray and black of burnt stumps and ash covering the ground. There were clear signs that used to be a camp, though all that remained were the occasional circle of stones and the odd pile of bones. Anything else that used to be here was gone. There were a few wisps of smoke here and there, giving the impression that whatever happened here, happened recently.
The goblin leader bid his mount to turn, before reaching up to his neck and pulling something out. It was an old fashioned key, the kind that had been used centuries ago.
“You want key? You kill big bird that do this. Bring proof, I give,” he said in broken English.
“Big bird?” I asked, confused.
He nodded, putting the key away. “Big bird, shoot fire from mouth. Fly over and burn camp. You kill big bird, I give key.”
My friends and I looked at each other, probably thinking the same thing. It sounded like there was a dragon on this floor, and it was terrorizing the goblins. While I would have normally been fine with that, we needed the key around his neck, and I didn’t like the odds of us getting it from him in a fight. Not with seventy or so goblins nearby.
Looking back to the leader, I asked, “Do you know where we can find this big bird?”
He nodded emphatically, turning and pointing. I followed his finger, and saw that he was pointing at a mountain. It was actually the mountain we were on our way to when the horn blew behind us and the goblins showed up.
“Where do you want to meet when we have the proof? Here?”
He shrugged. “You come to forest, we find you.”
I nodded. Simple enough, find the dragon, kill it, bring back proof and get the key.
“Alright, see you in a few hours then,” I replied, turning and starting to walk towards the mountain, watching my steps to avoid stepping on any bones. A thought came to me when we got to the treeline, and I turned back to the leader, who had stayed there and was watching us.
“Oh, by the way,” I called. “How do you know our language?”
He shrugged again. “You people so noisy, no pay attention to surroundings. It easy enough to follow and listen. Pick up things.”
Nodding, I turned and started walking back through the forest. We found a trail easily enough, and followed it until we were back in the open fields between the two mountains.
[A dragon, huh? At this level?]
[No way,] Ben said. [You don’t start seeing actual dragons until level fifty, minimum, and even then they’re rare. I’m thinking it’s a wyvern.]
[What’s the difference?] Anja asked.
[They’re actually pretty similar. The difference is that dragons have front legs and wings, while wyverns have only the wings up front. They’re a whole lot smaller, too, at about half the size.]

[Wait, so you’re saying Daenarys wasn’t Mother of Dragons, she was Mother of Wyverns?]
[That’s right,] Ben sent with a chuckle. [Doesn’t sound as good, does it?]
It took about thirty minutes to cross the fields and reach the forest on the other side, and as we got closer, we were able to see a cave opening about halfway up the mountain. Deciding to check there first, we quickly made our way through the forest and began our hike. We weren’t particularly worried about getting attacked by the supposed wyvern, as we could immediately teleport away and fight it on our own terms.
We did find a trail that led us to the exit, but there was a stone door blocking it, with a spot for a key in the middle. The door ended the ease at which we had been climbing the mountain so far, which meant a lot of climbing and using our abilities to proceed up the mountain. Mason actually had the hardest time of it, since he couldn’t really use Whirling Leap, and the only other movement skill he had was Dash, which just caused him to move very quickly in a straight line. There were a few times where I had to get down on my stomach and reach down so I could pull him up a sheer cliff face, but we made it up okay.
Climbing the mountain took longer than crossing the field did, but soon we were able to see inside the cave. There was a huge creature that looked very much like a dragon, sleeping against the back wall of the cave. It’s scales were mottled, being primarily brown with black spots. It’s head had a few swept back horns protruding out of its head and it had a large bulb on the end of its tail.
[That’s a wyvern, alright,] Ben said. [How do we want to do this, though? There isn’t a lot of room up here to work with. It’s also pretty damn big.]
[There is no way we can fight it unless we can get it on the ground. Even then, I don’t like our chances. This thing burned the goblin camp, even with a lot of those hobgoblins having bows. Do you see any arrows sticking out of it? I sure as hell don’t.]
[What’s your proposal, then?] Ben asked.
[You four teleport back to the entrance to this floor, and I’ll teleport to the field. Once there, I’ll shift into my dragon form. I should be able to take care of it easily enough.]
[Sounds good to me,] Mason said. [Kinda wish I brought some popcorn to enjoy the show.]
We moved down the mountain a bit before teleporting, not wanting to wake the wyvern before I had a chance to shift into my dragon form. After my friends let me know they were back at the entrance, I began shifting into my dragon form. While I could feel the mana circling my body while I began to change, it wasn’t nearly as noticeable as the first time I had shifted into my dragon form. What hadn’t changed was the time it took me to finish changing into the form, finally finishing over two minutes later.
Testing my wings, I gave them a few beats before roaring and leaping into the air, heading towards the cave the wyvern was residing in. I was still a few hundred feet away when I saw the wyvern walk out of the cave. It noticed me right away, and took off, flying away as fast as it possibly could. I wasn’t expecting that, but I knew it wouldn’t be able to get away. I was bigger and faster, and I had a trick up my sleeve. Not to mention the fact that we were in a dungeon, there wasn’t anywhere to flee to.
Teleporting, I appeared directly overtop the wyvern and grabbed onto its neck with both of my front arms before flaring my wings to slow down very quickly. While the majority of my momentum stopped, none of the wyvern’s did. The rest of its body continued forward, and I felt a few pops in its neck before it went limp in my arms.
Ben had told me not to damage its body too much, so rather than dropping it from hundreds of feet in the air, I glided until its body was dragging the ground before letting go. With it taken care of, I landed a short distance away and shifted into my Seotross form. My friends teleported in as I was doing that, and more than one of them circled the wyvern to get a good look at it.
[Nicely done!] Ben said. [I was expecting it to fight you, though. Not try to get away.]
[You and me both,] I sent. [Still, I’m glad I didn’t have to fight it in the air, I have no idea how that is supposed to work.]
[Alright, well cut its head off so we can give it to the goblins as proof, and then help me skin it.]
[Skin it? You never said anything about skinning it.]
[Floors like this one aren’t very common, and like I said earlier, it gives us an opportunity to gather materials that can only be found in dungeons. It would be such a waste to leave the skin here, especially since it’s fully intact. It will also go very quickly with you in that form, which is why I wanted you to switch into it when it was down.]
I sighed when I was done shifting and then took one of the crystalline swords out of Abi’s dimensional storage using the Beacon. Walking to the head of the wyvern, I raised my sword overhead before cleaving clean through its neck. Putting the sword away, I picked up the head and put it a short distance away before turning back and cutting off the wings as well, since Ben said they were worthless, and would make the wyvern a pain to roll over.
With that done, I put away my crystalline sword and took out a smaller one that Abi had made for me previously, so I could skin the wyvern. Ben directed me all the way, and after making a long cut from its neck to its tail, I began the more delicate process of separating its hide from its flesh, while making sure that there weren’t any holes in it. It wasn’t easy, but thirty minutes later the hide was in a very big piece. My friends tried rolling it up, but it was too heavy, so I did that while they finished up removing its claws.
We didn’t have a dimensional storage big enough to carry everything, but luckily Abi said that there wouldn’t be any mess so I could just put everything inside her dimensional storage using the Beacon. With everything gathered, I picked up the wyvern’s head using one of its horns as a handhold, and then we continued back to the forest where the goblins lived. I had no doubt that they had watched me practically swat the wyvern out of the sky, and my Seotross form would ensure that they didn’t try anything.
The goblins came out of the forest when we got close, all of them with their weapons in their hands, the ones with bows actually had arrows nocked. To make sure there weren’t any hostilities between us, I lifted up my arm to show them the wyvern’s head, which had been obscured by the long grass. They relaxed slightly at that, and the leader came out of the forest, this time walking while his wolf walked beside him.
I tossed the head between us and the leader froze, staring at it. After a moment, he walked forward and began kicking the thing, shouting what I assumed were profanities in his native language. When he got his frustrations out, he walked up to me while reaching up to his neck again. He took off the necklace holding the key, and held it out for me.
I accepted the key, nodding at him while asking Ben to pass on my thanks.
“‘No problem’, as you people say. That not all. Wait,” he said, turning and raising his clawed hands to his mouth. He whistled and then turned back to the forest.
I saw movement, so I looked where he was looking and saw two hobgoblins carrying a large chest out of the forest. They placed it next to the wyvern’s head, and then stepped back behind their leader.
“For you,” the leader said, gesturing to the chest while holding up two fingers. “It normal for you people to fight my champions in fake battle, but big bird kill two of them. You kill big bird, so you get things in box.”
When he finished talking, he waved a group of hobgoblins forward, and then walked back into the forest. The hobgoblins all grabbed onto the wyvern’s head, and then they carried it into the forest as well. Within seconds we were alone again, though I had no doubt that we were being watched.
[Abi, items don’t become soulbound if I put them into your storage right?]
[Nope! You’re free to put whatever you want inside of it.]
[Cool, thank you,] I said before looking at Mason. [Mace, you wanna open up the chest and hand me the equipment inside of it? I don’t want to hand it out here, it’s too exposed and I don’t particularly trust the goblins.]
He nodded and walked over to the chest, opening it up. I took the Skill Gem pouch out of my inventory and handed it to Sonja, and then took the Beacon out of my inventory. With the Beacon in hand, I accepted the two items that Mason was holding up. The first was actually a staff, while the second was another pair of gloves. I took a moment to look over them both, before putting them away. Mason handed Sonja the two Skill Gems and then got started on taking everything else out of the chest before closing it.
When everything had been gathered, we immediately teleported to the floor’s exit. I handed the key to Ben so he could open the door before switching to my dragonkin form, as there was no way my Seotross form would fit through the door. While shifting back, I watched as Ben inserted the key into the keyhole. Apparently he didn’t even need to turn it. As soon as it was inserted, the door shimmered with a light blue light and then began swinging inward. I noted that the key also disappeared as soon as the door was open all the way.
I led us forward as soon as I was able, the door closing behind us, likely to prevent another team from walking through for free. We activated the waygate and then took some time to distribute the items. Ben didn’t want the staff, and neither did anyone else for that matter, so we decided to sell it through the Adventurer’s Guild and split the profit. The gloves were of interest to everyone, though I passed on them since I had just received a pair of gloves only hours beforehand.

Sonja ended up winning them with her rolling a 70, and with that taken care of, we continued on. It was actually the sixteenth floor rather than the twelfth, which meant that whatever we were facing on this level would be a few levels higher than the kobolds we had been facing earlier in the dungeon.
Besides the previous floor, every floor we’d been on had followed the same sort of formula; narrow corridors that lead to rooms or chambers, which have enemies to fight or chests to open. This one was different. After walking through a door, we were on a raised platform that overlooked the rest of the wide room that curved to the right while also descending in elevation. Down below, we could see goblins and hobgoblins milling about around a cooking fire. There was some sort of animal on a split slowly being roasted by one of the goblins, and the rest seemed to be waiting for it to be ready.
Further into the large curved room, there were a few other groups of goblins. Some were sleeping, some were sparring, and others were partaking in more… enjoyable pursuits. Goblins could be heard laughing whenever one moaned in pleasure, and I even saw a couple of female goblins being dragged over into crude tents that were setup along the walls.
All told there were probably forty or fifty goblins and hobgoblins in the part of the room we could see, and there was no way to tell how many more there were, or how big the room was. At least they were spread out so we would only have to fight a dozen or so at a time, but there were still a lot of goblins.
When we were ready to go, I led our group down the stairs, drawing the attention of the goblins who had been standing around the firepit waiting for their meal to finish cooking. They had fought over the meal when it was ready, each of them grabbing as much of it as they could before it was gone. They were in the process of eating their meals, though they dropped their food and grabbed their weapons before yelling and charging at us.
My friends were all standing just behind me, and when the goblins got close enough I breathed in deeply before projecting a jet of flame forwards. The ones at the back managed to dodge out of the way, but the ones in front caught the brunt of it, their loincloths and hair catching on fire, before their skin started burning as well. They dropped and rolled to try to put out the flames, but it didn’t have much of an effect.
We walked forward, killing them quickly as to not prolong their suffering, though it appeared that their howls of pain had drawn the attention of a lot more goblins. When the first group was dealt with, I looked up and saw that there were easily forty or fifty goblins standing nearby. They did not look happy. Not one bit.
There was a large hobgoblin standing up front, his choice of weapon a single-bladed two-handed axe. Raising it in the air, he bellowed something out and the goblins around him charged forwards. Well, those who had melee weapons did. Those with bows and slings stayed back, firing arrows or flinging stones whenever they had an opportunity to do so.
Mason used Whirling Leap to appear in the middle of a large group of goblins, slicing clean through the smaller goblins and still doing a decent amount of damage to the hobs. I ran forward as flaming arrows flew by me, striking at a hob nearby. I was about to start attacking another hob when I saw glowing red out the corner of my eye. Dodging to the side, an arrow flew by my head, the feathers of the fletching kissing my cheek. Looking in that direction, I saw a female hobgoblin lower her bow as she reached for another arrow. Nocking it, she immediately aimed and fired, though I was no longer there.
Drawing my arm back, I trust my sword through her back before ripping it free. She fell and I used Blink to appear next to Mason, who was surrounded by goblins, his Mana Shield keeping him safe. A mace-wielding hob caught my eye, and it seems like I caught his eye as well. He ran towards me, lifting his mace overhead as he got close, intending to bring it down on me. I easily deflected it to the side with one of my swords and thrust forward with the other, catching him in the gut.
It wasn’t an immediate killing blow, so I pulled it out and thrust forward again, this time aiming for somewhere more vital. He had managed to balance himself just in time for my sword to pierce through his chest, likely severing his heart. He dropped his mace and immediately fell to his knees, before falling backward, pulling himself off my sword. Looking around the room, I saw another target.
I used Blink once more, this time appearing behind the axe-wielding hob who had commanded his brethren to attack us. I had already dropped the sword in my left hand, it deactivating automatically while dangling from my wrist. Reaching up, I grabbed hold of the haft of his axe, preventing him from bringing it down on Ben. Thrusting forward, I was surprised when my sword struck nothing but air, and my hand was no longer gripping the hobs’ axe.
The hob had turned translucent, moving to the side before jumping up and bringing his axe down in an overhead chop. I managed to jump out of the way in time, punching with my left hand. The punch connected with his face as I both felt and heard the crunch as his nose broke. The punch staggered him, but he recovered quickly, spinning and bringing his axe from the side this time.
Seeing that there wasn’t any flash of red, I let Mana Shield absorb the attack while activating the sword in my left hand again. I was about to strike when there was a flash of metal and the hobs’ eyes grew wide. Reaching up to his neck, I saw a long thin line of red appear, before blood started dripping all along that line. He fell to his knees which allowed me to see that Anja was standing behind him, her nodachi in hand and a cheeky little grin on her face. She turned into smoke and disappeared, which drew my attention to the hobgoblin who was now missing a head.
Shaking my own head, I turned and looked for another target. An arrow impacted my Mana Shield, prompting me to look in the direction it had come from. Looking there, I actually saw three hobs; two males and a female. All had bows in hand and all of them were looking at me. Breathing in again, I fired another jet of flame, which closed the distance very quickly. They didn’t manage to move out in time, their clothes and bows catching fire.
Knowing that they were out of the fight, I turned and surveyed the battlefield noting that everything was pretty much taken care of. There was an absolute pile of goblin corpses around Mason as he fought two hobgoblins at once, his halberd piercing one through the chest while he actually lifted the shaft of his halberd to parry an attack from the other. He raised a foot and stomped causing the ground within a few feet of him to start shaking and break apart, making the goblins to lose their balance. With the time he now had, he pulled his halberd free and began thrusting forward. Before his attack could connect, an arrow whizzed by and lodged itself in the hobgoblin’s head, killing it. He switched targets and finished the injured one off, instead.
That was the last of the first group of goblins, the regular ones having been taken out early on, while the rest hobs shortly thereafter. After gathering any loot left behind, we began making our way further into the massive room. The room seemed like it was going to spiral downward, and it didn’t take long before we came across the next large group of goblins.
The fight went much the same way the previous one did. The regular goblins were quite weak, so it was a simple matter for Mason to dispatch them using Whirling Leap. Besides a few Penetrating attacks and the Phase Shift ability that the hobgoblin used to get away from me, none of them had anything we had to worry about in terms of abilities.
There were probably another six groups of goblins to deal with after the first two, meaning that we killed somewhere between three hundred sixty and four hundred goblins before coming across a set of double doors. We also got quite lucky while killing everything, getting a pair of epic boots, another pair of uncommon pants, and then two Skill Gems, one Tier D, and the other Tier E.
With the fighting out of the way, I handed Sonja my phone and then took the first of two items out of Abi’s dimensional storage using the Beacon. I took a second to look over the stats again, before handing them off to Mason to look at.

Everyone got a look at the boots and then Sonja initiated the roll. I elected to pass on them, since I already had a pair of boots, and it would benefit the group more if we all had a piece of armor in a respective spot before rolling for another.
[We have a tie!] Sonja said when the results came in. [Ben, Anja, roll again, please.]
A chime let me know that there was a winner, and Sonja looked over to Ben. [Congrats, Ben!]
I congratulated him on the boots and then handed them to him where they promptly disappeared. Next up was the uncommon pants. I handed them to Mason, though he elected to pass on them.

[Congrats… me!] she said as she looked over the results.
After congratulating her, we swapped items, me passing the pants to her while she passed me back my phone. I checked to see the results of the roll, and saw that she had rolled an 84 with no one even coming close. With everything sorted, I walked up to the door and pushed it open.
It seemed like the boss for this floor was actually four hobgoblins. They looked over as the door opened, but did nothing but get to their feet and pick up their weapons. Each of them was equipped differently, the largest of them wielding a huge two-handed axe. The smallest of the four hobs was actually a female that carried two daggers while being garbed in a set of pitch black leather armor. The remaining two hobs were both males that fell somewhere in between the size of the axe-wielding hob and the dagger-wielding hob. One was an archer and the other a mage or shaman of some sort, though it was impossible to tell what the latter’s specialty was without seeing him in action.
After sending some commands to my team, I ran in with Mason right on my heels. Anja actually stayed back to cover Ben and Sonja, as I had a feeling that the female hob would have some sort of stealth capability. That proved to be correct when she disappeared into a cloud of smoke. I didn’t worry about it, knowing that Anja would be able to handle it, instead focusing on my target; the axe-wielding hobgoblin.
I opted to go weaponless for this fight, testing out my new gloves. I didn’t bother using Blink to close the distance, instead charging at the hob as he was charging at me. As we got closer, he brought his axe back, getting ready to strike. When he swung his axe forward, I stepped to the side while throwing an uppercut that connected with its chin. The impact of my fist knocked him clean off his feet, while I also felt something break.
He landed with a groan while his axe fell from his gripped and clattered to the floor. Picking it up, I raised it over my head, intending to finish him off. As I started swinging it, however, my arms stopped moving. Looking up, I saw that some sort of vines had wrapped around my wrists and were holding them in place. I tried pulling, but they didn’t budge so much as an inch. I also tried using Blink, but found that the vines prohibited me from doing so.
I scanned the room, finding the hobgoblin caster and saw that he was looking at me, his staff raised in one hand while the other was closed into a fist. Mason had been the one targeting him, though I noticed that there was a vine-like cage around him. He was attempting to cut away at the vines, but they grew back quickly.
Movement out of the corner of my eye drew me back to the hobgoblin warrior. He was back on his feet and he was grinning as he looked up at me. He barked something to the caster and the vines immediately tightened, causing me to open my hands and drop the axe. He caught it in mid air, and then brought it back, intending to strike at me again. I raised my Mana Shield just before it hit and then called out to my friends.
[Umm, a little help here.]
[Busy!] the twins replied at the same time.
I couldn’t look behind me to see how they were doing, but I knew they were both fighting their hobgoblin counterparts.
[Ben?]
[Working on it!] he said.
The warrior had continued beating on my Mana Shield to try to take it down, though he didn’t seem to have any attacks that could pierce through shields. What he did have was something that allowed him to attack very quickly, but even his sped up attacks couldn’t overcome my mana regeneration.
A red glow lit up the room, causing me to look for the source. Before I could find it, a meteor landed beside me. Looking up I saw a lot more on their way, and I hoped Mana Shield would be able to protect me from them. The warrior had used a skill to move away as soon as the first one fell, avoiding all of the meteors. Since he couldn’t attack me, I saw him use the same movement skill to get close to Ben.
It only took a few meteors falling before one struck the vines, severing and then burning them. As soon as they were severed, the parts wrapped around my wrists came loose, allowing me to get back into the fight. Ben was much more capable than he had been, and between his high mana pool and his decent mana regen, I knew he would be able to keep the warrior busy.
I turned to help Mason, Blinking over while activating my swords so I could help him with the vines.
[It’s no use!] he said when he saw me. [Get rid of the druid or whatever that bastard is!]
Nodding, I blinked once again, appearing behind the druid, if that’s actually what he was. Just as I was about to thrust my cutlass through his back, another vine shot out of the ground and stopped my thrust in its tracks, a mere inch away from my target. I tried slashing with my other arm, but a quick gesture from one of his hands prevented that too.
He turned back to me, a confident smile on his face.
I hadn’t wanted to try it before, as I didn’t know how well my armor would hold up to it. This time, however, I had no such issue. Taking a deep breath, I released it, firing off a jet of flame that hit him point blank. I saw his face change into one of horror, though he wasn’t quick enough to move out of the way in time.
He started screaming as his flesh started to burn, but it seemed to do the trick. The vines loosened almost immediately, freeing my arms again. I was about to finish off the druid to ease his suffering, though Mason appeared nearby, his halberd already in motion. The axe-like blade of his halberd easily separated the druids head from his body, sending the former rolling across the floor while the other dropped like a sack of potatoes.
[Next time you deal with the druid and I’ll deal with the warrior!] he sent before turning and using Whirling Leap to close the distance.
I used Blink to follow him, and we both ran towards where Ben was fighting off the warrior. The warrior was battering his shield like he had mine, though nothing got through. Inside his Mana Shield, Ben was calmly casting Fireball after Fireball, and they seemed to be doing the trick. The smell of burnt hair was present as we got close, and I saw half of the hobgoblin’s head was now bald.
Reaching up with one hand, I yanked the axe out of the hobgoblin’s grip while punching forward with the other. The warrior collapsed to the ground and Mason was there a moment, later, his halberd being thrust through the hobgoblin’s back. Pulling it free, he stabbed forward once more, for good measure.
The axe in my hand began disintegrating, which confirmed that the hobgoblin was dead. Looking around the room I saw that the archer had been dealt with, and Sonja was standing there while she watched her sister. Anja had seemingly decided to go with her stilettos for the fight, the two dual-wielding assassins locked in a fierce battle.
Walking over, the three of us joined Sonja as we watched the two duel.
[How long has this been going on?] I asked, excluding Anja from the conversation, not wanting to distract her.
She looked over briefly before responding. [Since the fight began, I think. I’ve only been watching for a minute or so, and she forbade me from interfering. They seem evenly matched, neither has been able to land a hit while I’ve been watching.]
[That’s probably Precognition at work. She knows what the hobgoblin is going to do before she does it, so she’s able to counter her attacks. It should have allowed her to deal with the assassin in seconds, but I’m betting that Anja is toying with her.]
[Hmm. Maybe,] she replied.
We watched the two dance for a few more minutes, the assassin’s daggers and Anja’s stilettos connecting at least once a second, sometimes sending sparks flying. Neither had been able to land a hit, and it didn’t look like the fight was going to end anytime soon. My stomach had also rumbled a few times now, so it was time to get some dinner.
[Alright, Anja, playtime is over,] I sent, re-adding her to the conversation.
[Spoilsport!] she sent, before going into action.
She parried the next few attacks, waiting for an opening. When she seemed to find it, she disappeared into a cloud of smoke. The hobgoblin spun looking for her, but Anja actually appeared right where she had been standing previously. This time, the stilettos were gone, and her new nodachi was in hand. With a quick two-handed slash, she actually cut clean through the hobgoblin’s body at waist-level.
The hobgoblin fell to her knees before falling forward, her body falling into two nearly equal-sized pieces. Before the body could disintegrate, she bent down and wiped the blood of her nodachi and then stored it.
[That was fun!] Anja said with a big smile.
[Well, now that you’re done playing with your food, how about we go get some actual food?]
She nodded, raising her hand with her phone appearing in it a second later. After activating the screen, she scowled and looked at her sister. [Damn it!]
Sonja laughed and then pulled her own phone out. She glanced at it and then looked back to her sister. [Hah! I win!]
I looked over Sonja’s shoulder to look at her phone, not seeing what they were apparently looking at.
[What am I missing?] I asked.
Sonja turned towards me. [Anja and I decided to make a bet earlier, wondering when either you or Mason would bring up food. I said it would be before 19:30, though Anja thought it would be after. It’s 19:24, so I win!]
I laughed, and gently pushed her shoulder, sending her walking backwards to regain her balance before beginning to shift back into my human form.
[So what does the winner of the bet get?]
[Oh, we’re going shopping a few days before we leave to drop the dragons off, and if I see something and want it, Anja has to buy it for me.]
[You mean buy it for both of you,] Mason chuckled. [The two of you trade clothes so often that she’ll practically be buying it for herself as well. Sounds like a win-win bet to me.]
[True,] Sonja nodded.
As soon as I was done shifting, we picked up all of the Mana Gems left behind and then walked down the passageway that had opened up at the back of the room. After activating the waygate, we all stepped on it and were taken to the surface. I quickly made my way outside before turning back to my friends.
“So, am I driving or are we teleporting? I was thinking that we can try out that pizza place we saw in North Bay.”
“Teleporting, definitely.” Mason said. “The drive there and back would take up an hour if not longer.”
“Alright, you guys remember where it is?”
Everyone said they did, but I had them wait until I could let Abi know where we were going. It only took her a few minutes to get there, and she let us know when she was in position. We teleported to the sidewalk in front of the dungeon, scaring some people who had been walking nearby. After apologizing, we walked towards the front door only to have a short older woman run outside and block us.
“You’re not coming into my establishment like that!” she said with a stern look on her face while she gestured at our armor. “Head around back, and hose yourselves off.”
We apologized and walked around the building, finding the hose with an adjustable pressure attachment on the end. Taking turns, we spun in place while the blood and dirt was washed away, and then waited for a few minutes to let the sun dry us as much as possible. When we were done, we walked back to the front of the building where the owner was still standing. She looked over each of us before allowing us entry, and then directed us over to a table.
“What can I get for you guys, then?” she asked, a notepad in hand.
I gave her our orders and then she turned and pointed to a corner of the room. “You can get your drinks from there, the pizzas will be ready in fifteen to twenty minutes.”
After thanking the woman, we all got up and made our way over to the cooler to grab our drinks. The girls set theirs down and then made their way to the bathroom, and Mason, Ben and I took turns as well.
I had gone before Mason did, and raised my eyebrow as he saw next to me. Noticing my look, he sighed.
“Yes, I washed my hands. With soap! Wanna smell them?” he asked, shoving them in my face.
I recoiled back, chuckling and then we made idle conversation until our pizzas were ready. They arrived at the same time, Ben and the twins splitting one pizza, while Mason and I split the other. The pizza was quite good, though not as good as our usual pizza place back in Ottawa. We quickly demolished the two large pizzas and after paying, and giving Abi a few minutes of notice, we teleported back to the dungeon. After taking the waygate down to the seventeenth floor, we opened the doors revealing what was in store for us.
From behind me, Ben only said one word.
“Fuck.”

Dark Matter
In the year 2023, scientists investigating the nature of dark matter caused a blackout throughout the entire world of Coranth. With this blackout came the appearance of supernatural and near-magical elemental abilities able to be wielded by all. By harnessing the dark matter in the environment, even ordinary humans now accessed powers that would have been deemed fantasy. These abilities include Wind, Fire, Lightning, Water, and Terra, being the five natural elements of which dark matter is absorbed by the planet itself. Additionally, the two moons orbiting Coranth offer the "Superior" elements of Dark and Light. The year is now 2041, and Dark Matter will follow the story of an adolescent boy named Raiden Sullivan in a dystopian future, 16 years old, eldest of 2, and son to Marcus Sullivan. Raiden is an intelligent young man belonging to a poor family with an absentee mother. He partakes in daily chores to cover living expenses after school and his home life is surrounded by his caring father and younger sister. In truth, this is my take on urban fantasy with slight LitRPG that keeps the "magic" elements somewhat scientific for a more realistic story. In using the dark matter surrounding our universe, humans can now harness elemental abilities as well as absorb dark matter from the beasts/monsters to further strengthen their abilities. For the most part, that'll be the main premise of the power system. Full transparency, this will be the first story I write and also the first story I publish, so please be patient with me. For some context, I'm an avid reader and after 4 or so years of only consuming, I feel that it might be time to try my hand at writing instead. Please feel free to add your opinions and criticism, it would be much appreciated. With that said, I hope you enjoy Dark Matter!
