《Re:Direction The Peak (Cultivation Tale)》CH. 327

Jin and Ame walked to their 'office' which was nothing more than a large tent with a wide table and a few chairs. They were given twelve servants to help them throughout the ordeal. That being said, those were mortals or very low-level cultivators. They were not here to help with security. After all, there was no need for that. Not a single individual that would enter would be stronger than Ame but more than anything, this was the palace. And it was a fair to promote the soldiers of the faction.

There were not the slightest risks.

As they sat, Jin asked one of the servants to bring him a pen and paper. The servant bowed and asked if he referred to the four treasures of the study which were the pencil, the stone ink, the ink stick and the rice paper.

Ame chuckled at the side.

It was just a matter of words. The servant realized he made a mistake right away and left in a hurry to fetch the items. He unknowingly insulted the standing of the Vice-Captain with his words...

Jin sighed. He was not used to this kind of etiquette. While he had experienced many things, it was in fact the first time he stood with royalty. But then he realized something.

It was the first time he would actually write after he arrived in this world!

Indeed, he read many times and quite a few books and such throughout those years but never once did he, himself, write anything.

He was not even sure if there were pens in this world to be honest.

He turned to Ame and decided to use her to figure the answer to that question. He asked her: "Do you have a pen?"

She laughed at him before she took out something from her ring and handed it to him. Certainly, it did look like a pencil but it did not seem to be one. It was heavy for one thing and seemed more like a rock than anything else. He looked at her suspiciously wondering if she was trying to make fun of him.

The servant was back with his four treasures. Jin was stunned when he saw the guy deposit a single piece of paper in front of him. Ame burst into a fit of laughter and earned a glare.

After calming down, she told the servant: "Bring us some bamboo paper instead and a lot of it. ...And a few other sharpened ink stones"

The servant bowed and hurriedly ran to go fetch the things. Ame looked at Jin and asked him with a grin: "Not used to this much, eh?"

Jin did not bother retorting.

Once the servant came back, Jin had him take away those four treasures that he, in fact, considered useless. He took a sharpened ink stone and a paper and ordered a servant to let the first interviewee in. Ame also picked a piece of paper and a sharpened ink stone.

A royal corps was composed of a Captain, A Vice-Captain and between ten to fifty royal guards. This meant that they had to recruit ten people at least. That was what the King ordered them to do.

Neither Ame nor Jin planned to recruit even a single more!

Because adding more would be the same as letting one more hunter in. They both had enemies and they had now had to deal with the royal politics. There was no way that everyone here was pleased to see them. Two newcomers allowed to create a brand new corp? There would definitely be many people unhappy about that.

This recruitment was an easy way to place spies within this new corp. Regardless of the goals behind it, it was unlikely that anyone would give up this opportunity. At the very least, all those at the top or with ambitions would grab onto it.

Jin and Ame were very much aware of it.

Ame planned to recruit those and make use of them. Mostly putting them to work harder than anyone else. As spies, they would have to do their best to retain their spots and even more! After all, their goal would be to get closer to Ame and Jin. They would work hard to please them and get them to open up...She wanted to make use of that.

Jin disapproved. He had been experiencing it enough to learn the lesson. Thinking you were the one tricking the other was often no more than a delusion!

Instead, Jin wished to pick some people that were doubtlessly not spies. They would be weak. But trustworthy. At least, at the beginning. After some time, their integrity would likely become questionable as well. After all, temptation and greed were parts of human's lives.

But Jin only needed a few months of safety!

And so, regardless of their disagreement, one thing remained clear: they had to pick ten people.

The servant quickly led the first man in.

Jin wasted no time and asked: "Name, Age, Stage and Experience please"

The answer quickly revealed this first man to be a spy. He was young and talented. Far too much to still be a mere soldier and not yet have joined another Corp or something else.

Ame was quite happy about him, Jin was not.

The entire day went by like this. They met all kinds of people, really. Some were so old that they looked like walking corpses and some were so young that Jin even wondered if they had finished growing...

It took them the entire day to finish up. And yet, there were still hundreds of people waiting for their turn. Unfortunately for those, the two of them had no intention to meet them.

They planned to pick their ten members from those they met today.

Because it did not matter much to continue this charade. The profiles of the people would be the same. They might as well save themselves the trouble. Since, to them, it really did not matter.

They would never trust any of those they would pick after all.
