《Memories (Completed)》Chapter - 4

Another day passed by with visits from Mary and some of my friends from college and colleagues from work.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t recall any of them. They all genuinely looked concerned. All of them couldn’t stop themselves from expressing their condolences about Priya and our situation.
It seemed like Priya and I were a popular couple in college. And they all looked very upset about what happened.
I learned something more as well. The police were not making any progress with the case. They had pinned all their hopes entirely on me recovering and providing them with new leads.
I was not very thrilled about hearing it.
Even though I still couldn’t remember everything, I was outraged towards the person who had ruined my life. He had taken from me the love of my life and even my memories of her. I wanted that person to be found and punished in the worst way possible.
I decided to do everything in my power to ensure that the person responsible was found and receives the punishment for his crimes.
The next day arrived, and it was time for me to get discharged from the hospital.
Mary came to pick me up. She had taken care of all the discharge formalities. The Doctor told me to come back in case there were any changes to my condition.
Once I was ready, and about to leave, Mary suggested that we go through the back of the hospital.
Reporters had been waiting a long time for a chance to get any comments from me on the incident.
Murder was not a common occurrence in our small city, and it had garnered a lot of attention from the people. The only reason reporters haven’t gotten inside was due to police security.
Mary suggested that we avoid them. But I had a different view on it. I wanted to meet them.

Seeing I was not going to change my mind, Mary reluctantly agreed.
As soon as I was out of the hospital, I was surrounded by reporters from all directions. I could also see the Inspector standing near the entrance with an unhappy expression on his face. I guess what I was going to say will only make his mood worse.
I decided to make a speech rather than answer all of their questions.
“Everyone, please listen to what I have to say. My name is Jacob, and I know you all have a lot of questions for me. Since I am still recovering, I won’t be able to answer all of your questions. So I will give a small speech and will let that be for now."
"As you all know, I was involved in an incident at the Lovers peak a few days back. Unfortunately, I was hit heavily in the head during the incident and have lost all my memories. I’m working with my Doctor to improve my condition and recover my memories as soon as possible. Till then, I won’t be able to answer any of your questions. I request all of you to give me some space and let me recover properly."
Now for the additional part. I continued with my speech looking towards the Police who were present.
“Regarding the incident, the police are following on multiple leads, and I believe they are very close to identifying the culprit. I thank the police force for all their hard work. I’m sure they will take up all your remaining questions.”
As soon as I finished, all the reporters started swarming towards the Inspector with their questions.
I could see he was very unhappy with my answers and how I handled the situation. But they had been wasting too much time putting all their hopes on me. I hope this will give them the extra incentive to work harder on the case.

Soon I left the hospital with Mary to my apartment. The apartment was half an hour's drive away.
Mary gave me a lift in her car as my vehicle was still in police custody. I’ll have to get it released soon.
As soon we reached my place, I was faced with another dilemma. Who had the key to the apartment?
As if reading my mind, Mary answered my unasked question.
“Don’t worry. You always used to keep a spare key under the mat. I came earlier yesterday and cleaned up your room a bit. I didn’t want you to come back to your place filled with dust.”
I felt I owed Mary a lot for all the care she had been giving me
We got into the apartment using the spare key Mary found under the mat. The apartment was a small decent one with a single bedroom, hall, and a kitchen.
“So, do I stay alone here?”
“Yes. You have stayed in this apartment throughout your college and your internship. You believed this would help you to concentrate more on your studies and stay away from all other distractions.”
“Oh, ok, Thanks for the information.”
“So, have you remembered anything else since the incident?”
I decided to be honest with her.
“A bit. The ring triggered few memories. Like how I felt when I bought it. I think I might need some kind of stimulus to remember more.”
"I might have something that can help with your memory.”
“What?”
I was ready to try anything.
“While I was cleaning your room, I found your diaries. I think this should help you.”
“Wow, that would be great.”
“Though I could only find the diaries for the 4 years of college. Despite searching all over the place, I couldn’t find the recent one. I think you might have kept it separately.”
“Something is better than nothing. Thanks a lot. I think I’ll go through them once I settle down.”
“Don’t be in a hurry to read them. Take some rest and read after you feel a bit better. Also, don’t go through them all at once. Read it slowly. I believe it might help. Anyways I better leave now. You need to take rest.”
Mary left soon. Even though I wanted to go through the Diaries as quickly as possible, I decided to take Mary’s advice and rest first.
I was feeling sleepy and didn’t realize when I slept off. I still had a lot to do and not a clear idea of how to do them yet.
