Chapter 67

Relocation

President Kelly was at a crossroads. It had quickly become apparent that the situation on the East Coast was untenable. There were simply too many portals, and the remnants of the governments were surrounded on all sides.

Now? The Joint Chiefs and Secretary of Defense were recommending a full-scale relocation of all government apparatuses to Colorado. An area, where, due to lower population density seemed to be largely devoid of the large-scale portals that had been present on both the East and West coasts. Simply stated, it was the only part of the country capable of preparing for and mounting a large retaliatory comeback of the American nation.

Already large amounts of military goods, and bases were located in the Heartland, and several contingency bunkers and military bases were in the area.

Additionally, plans had been put in place to circumvent the large-scale atmospheric interference affecting government and military communications. A workaround had been planned out. Essentially piggy-backing radio towers to continuously transmit information. It helped extend the range, but a lot of communication towers were currently inoperable, taken out by the EMP that declared the beginning of the invasion. But if they were in Colorado... Communication towers could quickly be erected without a massive threat from the invaders.

Additionally, reports of the (Atlantic) fleets returning to the Capital had already been delivered. Granted, the shock at witnessing the absolute rubble of the capitol was quite... Disturbing to say the least. But a sufficient contingent of America's forces had already returned, and waiting was no longer much of an option. Large-scale skirmishes were occurring along the military perimeter stationed in the North and in the West. Refugees were fleeing by the tens of thousands.

Secretary Kelly was at a difficult decision. In order to relocate the entire government to Colorado, they'd have to take out the wormholes in that area. Reports were spotty, but reconnaissance missions had been conducted despite the communication blackout. by deriving information from reports before the "Invasion" she was already aware that the number of portals in the Heartland had been largely limited. A few small-scale tactical nuclear strikes should be enough to disrupt the wormholes. Civilian infrastructure in the cities would be decimated, but that was the price of taking out those wormholes and clearing an operable area for the nation to resume some measure of... normalcy.

It was decided. The Relocation would commence.
