《Techno-Heretic》Chapter 10: The Plans of Men

Rancho was about to close up shop for the night when the purple eyed youth came back.
He was clutching four strands of the shimmering silver mana. Rancho's eyes widened and he mentally went over any reports he heard when checking up on the local captain of the guard.....Nope, no reports of anything missing. Anyone who had such a fortune go missing would absolutely report it to the authorities and raise hell until something was done. Considering he was really the only person they could sell such goods too he was usually the "something" guards harangued when such items went missing.
"Wow, um....Hmph." Rancho quickly cleared his throat.
"If you could lay them on the counter" Rancho replied graciously, repressing his glee at the potential fortune. The four hair thin strands glistened against the glass and when he used what looked like a metal taser that fed a bit of raw mana into them they glistened even more brightly, giving off a kaleidoscope of rainbows and specks of bright lights to anyone who looked at them.
"Ah, genuine articles. That effect isn't reproducible by anything not made of pure mana. May I ask where you acquired these items? If its not too much to ask" Rancho asked with some enthusiasm.
"I found them on my way over here at the mouth of a creek " The boy said.
Rancho knew a lot of mana heavy spots in this area of the forest but the most consistent source were the creeks coming out of the ground. Of course, as a peasant, he couldn't see them but eventually patterns show themselves.
"Quite a lucky young lad you are" Rancho said. He wasn't the type of businessman who would deal in stolen goods but nor did he need the customers' life story to do business. He quickly got out a pouch and counted out 30 gold coins.

"This is as much as I can go for, no second offers" Rancho said while putting the pouch on the counter. He was considered unique among business circles for he lack of haggling interest. But to him time was money and time spent whittling deals out of customers for every last copper created huge time sinks, time that could be spent getting more goods for more customers. He had seen too many ludicrous opportunities pass by people as they let their greed get the better of them, also the customers appreciated it as his prices were typically fair and that was something that was hard to quantify.
"For a country bumpkin that is an almost unfathomable amount of wealth. I did not cheat him, that was the price he agreed too and that is that." Rancho thought shamefully to himself as he put the precious strands in one of the metal chests. After swindling the strange boy, Rancho was left satisfied with the exchange

The Little Black Umbrella
Gillean had just lost his best friend and is feeling utterly miserable and lonely. Being smart doesn't fend off loneliness. If nothing having the combination of smarts AND the lack of forward planning got him into the state he currently was in - rejection and the feeling of being a failure. Cue in the sounds of angelic trumpets. RaRa, his best friend, returns to "save the day". Well. What she thinks of as saving the day that is. Corny ideals, lame ideas. The two get into one last patch of trouble together as they sneak back into RaRa's home. Just what kind of family secrets has RaRa been keeping from Gill. In blood and thunder, Gill finds out. Please read the content warnings (there may be spoilers within though) if you have triggers. Also there is a slight mention of LGBTQ+, so please don't read this short story if even a short mention bothers you. ======================= My first short story (It's short - 5 chapters, 10,000 word-ish kinda short! And also completed *self pats* that I will be releasing in mini chapters (of 500-800 words each) on Fridays and Saturdays.). Happy to hear actionable and constructive criticisms on how I can improve, but please don't be too harsh okay? :) I know it's not perfect. But hey, we all have to start somewhere.
8 144A Fool's Journey, or the Vagrancies of a Man in Exotic Lands
What does a sad bastard do when fate, literally, decides to throw him into a fantasy world? Solon just wanted to lead a normal life; work, share some pizza with friends, work, play some videogames or read something, work, maybe sleep?, work... Pretty much the usual, rinse and repeat. It was far from perfect, but life was nicely boring and comfy enough. Truth be told, he had hoped it would go on forever, or until he got married, or until the apocalypse finally decided to bring an end to everything. As far as he could tell, though, the former was about as likely as the latter; not very. And perhaps even somewhat related, if it ever came to it. Unfortunately, he saw himself involved in some sort of cosmic fart that screwed him over, brutally severing his life-plan. Or, maybe, would it be more suitable to say that Fate had other plans? Sure, he's yet to find out exactly what those plans might be, but, at the very least, they do seem to involve him being shoved into another world, fighting off a couple of horrendous creepers, and -almost- an accidental liaison with a baboon. Needless to say, the job doesn't come with dental care, and death seems more likely than retirement... Yep, when he got yoinked out of Earth, there were no princesses waiting for him, no sexy goddesses, and no severe Gandalf-wannabes! Heck, not even a bunch of demonic cultists! All he got for the trouble was a bunch of snarky windows and the honest desire to punch whatever bastard happens to be behind the smug System. Well, that, and a few forced trips to the so-called Tower of Ascension. Not exactly what he would have expected but, on the plus side, he does get to do some magic. Though, not quite the wand-waving kind. Whatever. One thing’s patently clear, though, he’s certainly not the chosen one, nor the summoned hero, nor the Savior. If anything, he himself might be in need of some saving... Just what kind of fool does the System take him for? Please do consider the tags. Also, 'Strong Lead' here means weak to strong, over a decent amount of time, not op from the very beginning. Things to expect: decent grammar, cheeky goats. Things not to expect: Harems, a decent sense of fashion.
8 197Descendants of a Dead Earth
In the future, Man has traveled the Cosmos. In the future, Man has discovered many other races. In the future...Man has no home. 200 years after the great war that destroyed Earth, humanity struggles to survive; fractured, divided, wanted by no one. Until Maggie, of the Tinker Clan, makes a discovery, setting in motion a chain of events that could change everything.
8 179Twoen
The struggle for an interesting game has been the story of my life for quite some time. Every game I find is either too easy, not interesting or too short. Luckily, my two brothers who match my level of skill, albeit in different areas, tend to spice things up. When I look at my older brother I have no idea how he gets anything done when he's such an idiot. Still it doesn't detract from my respect for him as a gamer, though maybe a little. When I look at my younger brother I marvel at the monster that my older brother and I created. Deadliness, craftiness and quiet, both in what he does and how he is. When it's just us three we tend to destory everything in our path. So normally we tend to compete rather than team. Although that isn't to say we're just good as individuals. When we work together our effectiveness multiplies rather than lowering. Well enough about us dorks. Anyway a new VR game came out, apparently in development for quite some time. Of course my older brother decided to drive out and buy three copies. What would this one be missing? Difficulty? Depth? Length? In any case I plan to reach the top before my brothers do. It was a competition after all. Twoen had all three things I normally yearn for in spades. Something I did not foresee. A keeper
