《Settlement of Safehaven - A Hearthtree Series》Chapter Eight

Feeling good about my easy victory over the undead. I went to check on the elemental. Seeing that it was almost done clearing the rubble of the town hall. The building foundation didn't seem to be very big ten feet wide and about fifteen feet long, when I saw rotten timber of a bed pull out I realize just how small the building was. With a few more hours to sunset and not worry about the undead showing up. I decide to put up some lamp post. Putting one stone post, one-foot-square blocks going five feet tall, on each corner of the square. Casting twelve hours of Light on each post. Adding a few more to the south along the paved road between the hovels.
Turning my head as howls of some wolves to the north send a shiver down my back, I have been seeing an increase in wolves targeting the rabbits in the area. Shaking my head over how fast they seem to spawn in the area after clearing them out.
Glancing toward the sun as a habit as I head over to the west side of the Old North Road noticing that the creek have settled down and was starting to lower but it still needs to drop a lot more. The debris from the foundations has been pile up. at each end of the five-hundred-foot road to help level it out. Raising it high enough to put a bridge a good fifteen feet above the normal creek. I figure I will be starting the base of the bridge in two weeks on Fall Creek.
Hearing a rumble to the south seeing a storm coming in I head back to the town hall and check the pile of items. seeing ten scroll cases, a bookcase of thirty well preserve books in the case figuring the bookcase has some type of spell to keep the book undamaged.
Some more pots and pans.
Six sets silverware.
Ten chip China of which two was destroyed.
Four beer flagons.
Two large chests both with glowing with magic
.Inspecting the Bookcase of preservation

Six quilts
Ten blankets stacked.
Ten sets of shirts
Ten sets of pants
Ten sets of underwear
Ten pairs of various men footwear
Twenty pairs of tunics
Forty bars of copper
Forty bars of tin
Eighty bars of iron
A Chainmail shirt, chainmail coif, chainmail gauntlets
.The leather I am wearing is magical with less defense but still better than the chain I guess I save it for someone else or sell it. The scrolls were treaties for trade with several settlement and mines, over five hundred years ago. Storing it all in the tower, I ate dinner while the storm hit, using the light spell to light up the room for three hours and look through the books, four on law, one on governing a settlement, three on plant identification, a book on tailoring, three books on blacksmiths, two book on leather crafting, two books on fishing, five books on farming, two books on herding animals. The rest on wildlife and monsters of the north slope, plus seven on researching creatures. I decided to hold off on reading any of the books, except for leather crafting, blacksmith, and herding animals after reading them they faded away.

With that done the sound of rain and distance thunder put me to sleep after the light went out.
At the crack of dawn, I point to the ground north of the temple and had the elemental start digging a hole twenty feet wide and deep and one hundred feet long with a sloping ramp to the north. A few hours later I had the elemental dig another five feet deeper having the elemental go north another thirty feet I spent the rest of the day laying the floor to the sewer system I need a place to discard organic waste and feed Bill my slime cube instead of an outhouse. Building a sewer took few days I put a five-foot-wide canal down the middle about a hundred feet long placing a four foot wide stone bridge across it in the middle. With three feet thick stone ceiling over the sewer the whole length ran down under the road toward the sea from the square with the hovels I build on each side of the road, with three feet thick wall and a stairway leading up to the ground floor cover by a small ten by five foot building with a door giving me access to the sewer. That took the rest of the day and all the next four days to finish the sewer linking each one to the sewer. I was not easy doing and very messy, still, have to dump water into the toilet to make the shit run into the sewer. I just have to figure out on running the water from the creeks to each hovel and use the wastewater to keep the pipes clean. Still going to smell until I can figure out what to do. I finish another hovel using the logs on the roof like the other. It was satisfying if not a boring week of building. When I finished I was prompt.
Is this a hovel, YES/NO?
“Yes”
You have built a hovel.
100 (+30) Experience
3/3 hovels
It shows me a similar design to the last hovel I built. Saying yes to the design and the building change to the look I pick. Feel exuberant and tired I slept well that night with no bad dreams. I put the Elemental to work on the road building it up toward both creeks as it lowers each day. I finished my second hovel, three if you count the one I live in, ten feet south of the other one a few days later, double checking everything from top to bottom I added a pipe at the top of the sewer with a one foot square hole for water to run through later punching a hole up to the ground floor and capping both houses.
Took two more weeks to finish the other hovel. The ten feet between the hovel I fill in with dirt, well my elemental did, while it was doing that I was finished up the bridge abutment that took two days to build. Water was still moving along I figure I can add onto the abutment to strengthen it when the water gets to it summer lows. It about three days later I started using my water scrying in the morning checking down each side of the road for about ten miles, I was able to reach the west wayside from the road but did not find a wayside to the east.
It was on the next morning I found myself on top of the tower using the telescope I see some movement to the east, focusing on some people pulling something along the road to the east. Getting a copper pan out and pouring water in, casting the water Scrying, I watch as the view flew from me toward the group. Seeing ten goblins, four females and the rest children. Two of the females is pulling a travois, one is pregnant looking like she in pain, the other is holding a child moving toward me while looking over their shoulder with fear. I counted eight children. Moving the view past them down the road for about eight miles and see two orcs with four large wolves the wolves are feasting on the dead goblins and the orcs are looting the bodies. The view fade way as the time ran out.

Orcs, goblins, and giant wolves maybe they are wargs. Can’t let the goblins get kill, don't know if all goblins are evil but can't let them become slaughter, if I turn my back on them then this settlement is a sham. Rushing down nearly falling telling the elemental to follow I stop at my plank pile and had him grab ten planks and headed toward the east side of the road when I got to the river. I see that it is up again back to its full height from the rain, casting stone I started making a bridge across the creek lucky I already had a strong base to work from but worry that the stone will crack or collapse halfway across the creek. Being only four feet wide and not very thick the bridge start to sway up and down when I was about ten feet from the shore on the other side. Moving back twenty feet I send a silent pray to Frigga and ran leaping off the bridge landing face first on the road.
“Ouch,” touching my broken nose seeing blood on my hands.
You receive 16 damage from fall.
Groaning while meditating for ten minutes I was back to full health, building a solid base on this side I can hear the women coming from an occasional cry of the children. Connecting the bridge with the planks as they topped the rise they came to a stop seeing me. All four of the women goblins drew bone knives. Swat humanoid in form, large eyes with the pupil fill most of the eyes, long floppy ears and green to red tangle matted hair that goes down their back, narrow chin with a mouth full of sharp teeth. The women are bare-chested with sagging breasts, they are wearing tater loincloth made from whatever they got their hands on, their walk crouch with their feet being twice as long as a human foot only they walk on the balls of their feet with the heel of the foot more like the ankle. Their feet ends with large toes with claws. Their arms are longer with longer fingers ending with a claw. Instead of four fingers and thumb, they have three fingers and a longer thumb, when in the distance the wargs started howling, they all look back terror, turning toward me I wave them on pointing across the bridge. Wary they pass me still gripping their knives and started across the bridge just as the first warg crest the rise.

Even I could ride one of these beasts, as large a donkey but longer, and beefier in size. Longer snout with canines that as long as my stubby finger. This should be the moment that the fight music starts like most online games. Instead, I cast the spell Fireball it slam into the warg chest surprising it as it stumbles and rolls for several feet before running off on fire. I back up on the bridge pass the planks as three more wargs appear, just as I sense a present next to me looking down at the woman goblin standing no higher than three feet tall griping her dagger waiting for the wargs. Shaking my head no and pointing back across the bridge pulling the planks with me, I had my elemental start destroying the bridge in front of me as I cast another fireball at the group of wargs. Three feet of the bridge crumbles away as I turn and ran across the bouncy bridge. Just as I near the end I felt the bridge bounce harder and see a crack forming in front of me, glancing back I see one of the wargs has leaped across and collide with my elemental. Panicking as two more were about to leap on to the bridge I jump the remaining three feet as the bridge collapsed into the swollen creek below carrying away the elemental and the wargs down toward the sea

Herding the goblins toward to the wayside and hiding behind its wall I glance over and see the orcs laden down with loot, panting hard as they came over the rise. Dropping the loot on the road they spent a half hour looking puzzled at why three of the wargs are dead and no goblins around. They slowly headed toward the sea only to stop and stare at the tower I made.
Muttering, “damn!” Moving toward them to get closer I cast water suffocation on the orc to the back only to have it fizzle, Two more fizzles I was able to cast it on him causing him to slip into the water, I kept the spell going until I saw the prompt.
You killed an orc raider 80 Experience.
The other orc dropped his pack trying to see where his buddy was in the creek when I cast a second water suffocation on him, he stumbles around dropping to his knees before collapsing to the ground.
You killed an orc raider 80 Experience.
Feeling dizzy from losing so much mana I turn hearing a noise going over my head I turn and see the wolf I hit twice with a fireball fell over dead with a bone knife in its chest on the other side.
Turning I see the woman goblin, she points at herself, “Tarla, kill warg!” She turns and heads back to the wayside. Summoning the elemental on the other side of the creek I had it pile the bodies as I remade the bridge taking twice as long to make it stronger, two hours later I looted the warg and the orc.
I gather a Warg hide, five warg meat, Leather saddle, leather armor, a bronze sword and dagger, nine bone daggers, a pile leather strip that covering blood and wolf slobber. Three bone tip spears, one silver, and fifteen copper, the rest was junk.
Congratulations you have completed a hidden Quest. Quest completed: Rescue the Goblins Part One

Shaking my head and looking at the goblins at the waystation I mutter a prayer to my wife and daughter, "I promise my loves, I will make a Haven you always dream of."
