Josephine McCarty was born and raised in Gatlinburg, a mountain town in eastern Tennessee. She grew up listening to stories about the old days, but the stories she enjoyed most were stories about her great grandfather and the antics he used to get in. That is when he wasn't working on the railroad alongside his brothers and father or having to hunt to put food on the table for his family.
According to stories, they never saw him again after he left one day to go hunt for wild turkey.
Despite the distance that separated them, Josephine grew up to be close to her cousin, Isabella Swan. Some could even say they were thick as thieves—always together, and always getting in to something.
Josie, no matter how she felt about being away from her mountain home, always made a point to visit Forks whenever Bella stayed with her father, Charlie Swan, a month out of the whole summer. Those visits stopped, however, when the girls turned twelve.
They stopped because Bella decided she no longer wanted to stay in Forks and Josie found California too hot, and much too claustrophobic, nothing at all like her home in Tennessee.
After one incident too many that escalated in her getting hurt, Josephine is sent by her parents to Forks, Washington, to spend quality time with an uncle and cousin she hadn't seen in awhile. Well, that, and to finish what's left of her high school education without the negative influence of a certain boy.
Just as Bella is getting to know Edward Cullen, a mysterious boy at their new school, Josie encounters another member of the Cullen clan. It's not enough that his first name is the same as her missing great grandfather, but he looks just like him, too.
The problem? He hasn't aged a day, and he's supposed to be ninety years old.
