《Friendship Overload》Ch. 30 Stolen Goods

Ethan was slightly worried the other two had escaped, but it was all for naught. When he returned to the group, he found one of the men decapitated and another impaled on a large stone spike. He went up to Ana and patted her on the shoulder.
“You’ve gotten over your fear.”
“A bit… I need to pay that bastard back if I’m to fully overcome this.”
A soft murmur was heard from beyond the fence. Chloe Taylor was watching them since nobody knew when.
“Mom!” Ana ran into her embrace almost knocking the woman down. “Are you ok? Did they…”
“No, no. Calm down child. Those fellows were bastards but fortunately not cruel enough to hurt a bedridden lady. They left after I told them you were out, though they didn’t go too far from the looks of it.”
Ana’s cheeks went bright red and she began to stutter. “Th, this is…”
“Relax.” said her mother while swatting away the hand that was trying to cover her eyes. “I’ve seen worse.”
Mrs. Taylor wanted to invite her daughter’s new friends in, but sadly the house was a mess. Besides her chamber, every other room was devastated. The furniture was smashed to pieces and there were even fist sized holes in some of the walls.
“Pricks…” muttered Ethan upon seeing it with his own eyes. He never really liked this place, but it was important to Ana.
“It likely won’t be safe for you to remain here anymore.” said Oliver. “Since I’ve already claimed you work for me, how about you come live with us. Our guest house is larger and we have no use for it anyway.”
Regardless of how much his father insisted, clients and partners never stayed the night out of fear of accumulating debt. His stinginess had long become an urban legend.

Ana was reluctant to part with her childhood home, but after Chloe gave her approval, she eventually relented. Mrs. Taylor couldn’t walk easily, so the journey took quite some time. Fortunately, no further incidents occurred.
“I’ll get a healer to check out your mom.” said Oliver after the woman fell asleep in her new and improved chamber. Despite the room being 4 times larger and filled with only high end furniture, Mrs. Taylor seemed to fit right in. Her looks and age didn’t match at all, as the supposedly old lady looked more like a sleeping beauty waiting for her prince.
“I’ve already hired someone a while back.” said Ana. “But, he couldn’t figure out what was wrong. She’s growing weaker by the day without cause or reason.”
“Hmm… then, I’ll ask dad to call his drinking buddy over. He’s level 3 and one of the most respected healers in the Guild.”
“Really!?” Ana’s eyes were glowing as she cupped her hands.
“Of course. You’ll just have to help pay off the debt.”
Before Ana could ask what debt he was talking about, the boy changed the subject.
“Anyway, since we’re safe now, how about we check out our loot?”
The team went to the guest house’s meeting hall and sat around a large table. Out of Arthur’s tiny ring, gold, pearls, armors, and weapons fell on the table in droves. Everyone’s eyes were practically glowing.
“Alrighty then…” Oliver pulled up his sleeves and started sorting through the items. Like an experienced merchant, he grouped them into several small piles and even placed tiny labels on each one.
“There are exactly 800 gold coins. The jewelry is worth around 950 and the rest of the stuff about 50 gold. So, we’re looking at 450 gold coins per person.” He concluded while making a victory sign.

They all gave each other a high five or a hug. Not to mention the two commoners, even for the brothers this was a huge paycheck.
“So, should we split it four ways or sell it and then split the gold?” asked Ethan.
“Absolutely not.” said Arthur.
“He’s right.” confirmed his brother. “If this stuff hits the market, there’ll be no end to the amount of explaining we’ll have to give. The King might even confiscate it using some bulls**t excuse.
Our best move is to melt the coins, rip apart the jewelry, and change the patterns on the weapons and armors. Only then can we use or sell them safely.”
“Sure, but if what you’re saying is right, it needs to be done discretely.” said Ethan. “We can’t just go to a random blacksmith for this.”
“No problem.” shrugged Oliver. “Half of the stuff our family buys needs to be modified in some way. I’ll just summon my guy, and he’ll have it done by tomorrow.”

To Blunt The Sharpest Claw
The Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels are a series of New Fable genre novels that involve cats and dogs and high adventure and romance and espionage and food-fights and hotels and explosions and car chases. With large casts, exotic locations and an absurdity only possible in the absence of human characters, the Velvet Paw of Asquith Novels blend Wind in the Willows with James Bond, though with more cafes and fewer badgers. This submission is the third title in its Morigan Trilogy, beginning two-thirds of the way through the series' longest adventure yet. Here's a quick recount of what's happened so far: When Oscar Teabag-Dooven, a Velvet Paw of Asquith, is ordered to investigate how a mysterious poet, the Ar'dath-Irr, is able to travel instantaneously around the world, two very bad things happen. Firstly, he meets Lydia, an insane librarian who punches everyone in the face, and secondly, the Ar'dath-Irr reveals he is intent on taking over the world. Although this second thing might be considered worse than the first, Oscar feels differently following Lydia’s destruction of a cafe, a library and his face in one afternoon. In comparison, thwarting world domination just seems easier. Along with Binklemitre, a fellow Velvet Paw of Asquith, and Lydia, Oscar infiltrates the Ar’dath-Irr’s realm of dark poetry to discover the dog not only intends wrenching the world apart but has no intention of cleaning up afterwards. As a result, Oscar decides it’s all too hard and goes home to have a bath. After lots of arguing and the sort of food fight that posh restaurants were invented for, Lydia and Binklemitre convince him that they must stop the Ar’dath-Irr for several reasons, one of them quite serious. A vibrant cast of characters collide as Oscar, Lydia and Binklemitre battle the Ar’dath-Irr and his disciples in an adventure involving exploding cafés and appalling hotels, car chases and inadvertent surgery, dreadful poetry, lots of arguments and at least one temper-tantrum, all of which draw the three into dark and convoluted corners of a world they weren’t aware existed. Moreover, any chance of sitting down and discussing things over some buns disappears when Lydia punches the Ar’dath-Irr in the face. This results in her having a psychotic episode and Oscar getting run over by an ambulance. Although Binklemitre suffers neither, he witnesses both, which is almost as dreadful, though not nearly so messy. An enormous battle ensues, followed by a dinner party and then everything explodes.

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
