《In Range》Chapter 13: The Sleeping Forest

On our way back to town, I decided to spend the 20 Available Points I got from leveling, but I was still unsure which Stats to increase so I just made the numbers look neat—putting 2 in Sense, and 3 in the other Stats.

“Wow, the bonus Stats from the Dungeoneer Title makes my Stats look really high for a Lv 3, I wonder just how high they’ll get if they’re already looking like this?” Closing the Menu, I looked at the dirtied ring on my finger, and thought “Huh, I didn’t get the Strength bonus from the ring, but I guess that does makes sense since I’m not the required Level yet, though I can still wear it on my finger.”
Still walking down the straight dirt road back to town, I could hear a mumbling argument behind me, and suddenly I felt someone bump into my back, as a nervous voice said “Umm…excuse me.”
“Yes?” I said, looking over my left shoulder to see the human woman right behind me.
“Wha-What do we call you?" The human woman asked shyly.
"Mako already told us hers, but she said to ask you for yours if we wanted to know.” The dwarven woman added, also walking close behind me.
Walking slower, I moved back so they were both on my left, and I said to them “You can just call me Eyes.” Trying my best to give them a warm smile again, hoping seeing it would make them feel a little better. “And if it’s alright, can I ask for your names?” Asking both the women.
“Mine’s Kassa.” The dwarven woman said, looking to be the more mature of the two women.
While the human woman was covering her face from me with her hands, and peeking through her fingers.“Sherry.” She answered.
“Well it’s nice to meet you, Kassa and Sherry.” Mako then paced herself beside us, as we kept the women in the middle of the road for safety. “Can you tell me if this type of thing happens a lot in this worl—I mean town?” I asked, wanting to know more about the world.
“Yeah, don’t the town guards or adventurers help or something?” Mako questioned.
“The mine gets attacked about once or twice a month, but we usually only have to fight off 2-3 monsters since it’s so close to Asheton.” Kassa explained.
“But never that many.” Sherry added, with her whole body shuddering at the thought again.
Kassa continued, “The guards only get paid to guard the town, anything else they consider as none of their business. There is the Adventurer's Guild in Asheton, and the town does use them to get difficult things done, but the Mayor controls the Gold for making the Requests related to the town, and we all know he’s been wasting that Gold on his precious mansion.” Kassa looked angry at the thought of that.
My ears perked up at the words, Adventurer’s Guild, and I noted to myself “I should definitely check that out tomorrow.”
“There’s also not a lot of monsters in the area to make a lot of money from, so most of the adventurers who come to town leave soon after for better towns and cities that can get them more coin in their purses.” Sherry added again.

“Hey Sher, weren’t there a lot of monster attacks recently?” Kassa asked.
“Yeah, now that you mention it, there has been a lot recently.” Sherry agreed. “Like 2 days ago, when Celia got killed in another goblin attack when she was trying to visit her brother in Leon.” They both look saddened, as Sherry tried to be optimistic, saying “Maybe more adventurers will decide to stay now...”
Trying to cheer them up, I said “Don't worry, I saw a lot of adventurers in town today, and I think they’ll be staying for a while, right Mako.” Nodding to her.
“What?” Taking a second for her to understand, “Ohhh! Eyes is right girls, there’s probably like 10,000 of them.” Mako assured them, and even if they didn't believe it to be true, they still smiled at the thought.
Then a thought popped up in my head, “I wonder if the increased monster attacks happened because the Admin made more monsters for the Players to fight in the area; or were they already happening, and he just spawned us here as a good starting town that needed help?” Continuing down the road in my thoughts.
Approaching the town's raised gate, I said to Mako “It’s already night time and Drune’s shop might already be closed, but I should still have plenty of time for my Quest in the morning, so you wanna find a place to sleep at or something?”
“Eyes, we just met today, aren’t we moving too fast?” Mako asked, acting nervously and covering her exposed skin with her hands.
“Huh?” And as I realized what I said, and my ears got hot. “Get your mind out of the gutters Mako, I just meant—”
“I know what you meant.” Mako interrupted me, chuckling from amusement; when she finished chuckling, she said “That sounds good though, I could use a shower or a bath right now, I feel super gross and dirty.” As she felt the dirt and blood on her body.
“Umm...Eyes.” Sherry said, getting my attention “If you're looking for a place to stay tonight, my older sister owns the best inn in town, and it’s where Kassa and I stay, so we can show you the way if you want.” She nervously played with her fingers, “O-Only if you want...”
“Really? That would be great, I’m new to town so I don’t know where anything is yet.” I said.
Sherry’s eyes lit up, and she happily said “This way then.” Leading the way through the gate.
Walking past the guards, they didn’t pay Mako and I any mind again, but they did have some shocked faces when they saw Sherry and Kassa. “They must be surprised that they’re still alive.” I thought, following Sherry back to the town square. We then stopped in front of a building I just glanced over when I first came to the square.
Standing tall and wide, the building in front of us looked to be at least 3 storeys high, and at least 30m wide. The outside ground floor of the building was made completely of cobblestone walls, while everything above was made of darkish coloured wood, and the roof being an unknown dark green material. The last things on the outside of the building were the many windows shining orange firelight from the inside through them, and the double door entrance with a surprisingly lit sign above it. A sign that showed 3 top halves of trees, a person sleeping on the leaves, and the magically glowing words ‘The Sleeping Forest’ inside the leaves.

Grabbing me by the hand, Sherry pulled me through the double doors, and I was greeted to the loud sounds of glasses clinking, people conversing, and music playing. The space was filled with people of all Races drinking and eating at round tables, some at booths on the sides, and a few waitresses and waiters serving the tables. My eyes naturally looked up at the high ceiling of the space, seeing the large hanging chandelier and the indoor balcony on the second floor. Looking across from the entrance, there was a slightly elevated stage where a group of people performed, playing different types of wooden and string instruments; and beside the stage and in the corners of the space, were two mirrored L-shaped staircases that led to the second floor. Finally to the right of the space, there was a large and long bar, a door under the right staircase, and 5 people serving drinks behind the bar.
Seeing something shine unbelievably bright on multiple different people in the space, I thought to myself “Those are definitely Players, but I wonder who they are?” But before I could check their Names, I found myself being dragged by my hand towards the bar, and I decided to just let it happen.
Sherry then shouted to a woman behind the bar, “Sis, I’m back!” The woman instantly looked up, and I could see that she very much looked like Sherry’s sister.
Having a slighter lighter tan skin colour and a slightly darker brown hair colour, the woman wore a loose white cloth shirt that was rolled up at the sleeves, and a long brown waist apron; she also had her long brown hair tied back in a low ponytail—with a long forest green coloured ribbon. Seeing Sherry, the woman began to tear up, and she sniffled “Oh Goddesses Sherry...I thought I lost you when I heard about the mines...” Reaching over the bar, she pulled Sherry in for a warm embrace.
Sniffling too, Sherry said “Okay, okay, you can let go of me now.” But her sister only hugged tighter.
Finally letting go, she wiped her eyes of tears, and said “I already told you both, just work in the inn, look at you two now.” As Kassa and Mako walked up behind us.
“Well someone had to look after her you know.” Kassa said, hopping on a stool.
“I know, thank you Kassa.” As the woman also gave Kassa a warm embrace. Then turning towards me, the woman pointed at Sherry’s hand still holding my hand tightly, and she teased “Sherry, did you mine up a handsome elven boyfriend while you were gone? If so, can you mine me up one too?” Sherry finally noticed our hands and she immediately let go, covering her redding face.
Laughing a little, Kassa introduced us, “Rayna, these are our saviours Eyes and Mako.” Pointing to each of us.
Uncovering her face, Sherry said “They took care of all the goblins in the mine, cleared the Dungeon that appeared there, and even gave us clothes and food; without them, we wouldn't be here right now, and we wouldn't be as okay as we are.”
Rayna began looking at the girls carefully, then quickly turning back to us she nodded and smiled brightly, “That does it then, from now on you two will get free rooms, free food, free drinks, or whatever else you want free in my Sleeping Forest, and take this too.” When she handed me a sack filled with coins from underneath the counter, my Quest Menu suddenly popped up.
Quest Completed
Rayna’s Plea and the bonus Hidden Quest has been completed:
Find out what happened to Rayna’s Sister and Friend.
Bring Sherry and Kassa back alive and well.
Reward: 33(+3) Gold Hidden Reward: Rayna’s Immense Gratitude.
“What the? Did I just complete a Quest I didn’t have? And what’s that +3 about?” I wondered to myself; then I looked to Mako, and she looked to have gotten the same Completed Quest with her own sack of coins. Not thinking too hard about it, I said “We didn’t do it for the Gold, but we’ll gladly accept, thank you.”
“No, thank you.” Rayna said, earnestly smiling at Mako and I.
Smiling back, I asked “It’s Rayna right?
“That’s right, Rayna Forest, a pleasure to meet you, Eyes right?” I nodded yes, and she smiled again. “What can I do for you, Handsome?”
“Well, Mako and I were wondering if there were any rooms available tonight?” I asked.
“There are, but are you looking for one or two rooms?” Rayna asked, with Sherry looking to me anticipating my answer.
“Two please, but I’ll pay for both of them.” Sherry let out a sigh of relief, while I took out some of the gold coins out of the sack she gave me.
“Nonsense.” Rayna said, putting all the coins back, “You will never need to pay in my Sleeping Forest again.” Before I could refute, she continued “Kassa, can you take them to suites 1 and 2, here’s the keys.” Handing over the keys, “I’ll hear about what happened to you girls from lovestruck over here.”
“Rayna!” Sherry shouted, covering her face again.
Rayna and Kassa both laughed teasingly at Sherry, and Kassa said “Sure thing Rayna, follow me you guys.” Mako and I smiled and shrugged at each other.
Following Kassa up the stairs, we arrived on the 2nd floor balcony looking over the space below, and we could see that there were a lot of numbered room doors, and hallways with even more rooms on the floor. Continuing up to the 3rd floor, we arrived on an enclosed floor, with even more hallways and numbered room doors. Kassa then walked to a door that had a plaque that said ‘Suites’, and she unlocked with the keys. Surprisingly it wasn’t a room behind the door, but another flight of stairs we walked up.
We then arrived in an enclosed long hallway, but it was different from the other floors. The hallway had an extremely clean and fresh dark wood flooring, unlike the ordinary wooden flooring on the floors below; it also had white glowing crystals built into the walls that lit up the hallway, unlike the fire of the lanterns on the floors below. And even more uniquely, there were only 4 room doors here.
“That’s 1 and that’s 2.” Kassa said, pointing at the first two doors, and giving us the key for them. “If you need anything, just ask, it’s free for you two anyway…and thank you.” As she quickly ran back down the stairs before we could acknowledge her thank you.
Turning to Mako, I said “What a long first day, right?”
“Ughhh, I know.” Mako said, slouching and relaxing her body, “I was wandering around basically the whole morning to find the best swordsmith in town, just to find out they’re all not good, but luckily I was able to find Master Drune’s shop, and all I need to do is show him what I can do.” Pausing, Mako continued “There was also killing all those disgusting goblins, being the first to clear a Dungeon, and even finishing a Quest we didn’t know about.” She then nudged her elbow into my side, “And you Eyes, being all gentlemanly in the mine to Sherry and Kassa, making Sherry fall for you instantly, and did you see the waitresses check you out at the bar? What a true ladykiller you are, I even saw a few men.” Mako teased.
“You're exaggerating, and I swear I was only a little over average in the last world, so did I just get lucky with the Race change?” Feeling my slightly dirtied face.
“Mmmm...like really lucky…” Shaking her head at what she just said, Mako quickly unlocked and opened her room door, and slammed it shut.
Laughing to myself, I shouted “Goodnight!” And I heard her muffled response as I unlocked my door and entered my own room.
The moment I entered, I was hit by a really pleasant smell of a forest, and I could see that the room was lit with the same white crystals and had the same dark wood flooring as the hallways. The size of the room was about a quarter of the inn’s size, and there was a huge full glass wall that showed me a clear view over the entire town square. “I didn’t see this outside, is it like a one sided mirror?” I wondered. Then looking to my right, there was a wall with two doors and a set of double doors that looked to be a closet, and on my left against the wall of the door, was a king sized bed frame and bed; past the bed was a big couch and a nice table with two chairs by the glass wall. Opening the two closest doors on the right, the first one led into a bathroom with a toilet and sink, and the second one led to a large standing shower and a tub in the middle. “What the hell is this inn!? They even have plumbing!?” Unequipping my gear in the Stats Menu, they were all moved into my Inventory that now had 25 Inventory Slots from leveling and from placing in the Top 1000; I then decided to take a long hot shower to get cleaned up.
Stepping out of the shower, I wrapped myself in a towel and opened the closet doors. They led to a completely empty narrow walk-in closet, except for the huge mirror—the size of the wall—at the end. Looking at my body, I immediately noticed how much it changed already; from the really skinny body from before, to the now a slightly muscular and toned body. Getting closer to the mirror, I noticed that my eyes now had golden yellow colour mixed into my bright green irises. "Is that because of the Seer eyes?" I asked myself, feeling and looking at the different parts of my face next, “No wonder the girls were acting like that, this face is ridiculously good looking, even I'm attracted to myself, especially with the long wet hair look right now.” Then finally being able to see The Earring of Annihilation, I was dissapointed to see it was a simple black hoop earring with a solid black ball hanging from it on a black chain. "I don't see a shine coming from it with the goblin eyes, it can't really just be an ordinary earring, right?" I asked myself, as a knock came from my door.
Opening it, I saw Sherry looking all cleaned up and wearing a light blue dress, and she was holding the clothes I gave her and Kassa—and they looked to be all clean and folded up. “Hi Sherry.” I said.
Her face immediately became flushed seeing me, and she gulped loudly before stuttering “W-We cleaned b-body—I mean clothes.”
Smiling and chuckling a little, I said “Thank you.” Grabbing my clothes from her, my hand accidently brushed against her hand and she let out a small squeak; immediately covering her mouth, she frantically sprinted down the stairs.
Amused by her reaction, I closed the door and dried myself off, putting my shirt and sweats on, and storing my cloak in my Inventory. Then laying in the large comfy bed, I opened the Top 10 group chat to see that a lot of messages were already past, but too lazy to read them all, I just started where Faust and Dream were talking.

I'm Sure It'll be Fine! ...right?
We live to die, and die to live again. This Cycle continues, neither to Begin nor End. Ever Beginning, never to End, we come to the story of our Unusual Friend. The Gods are as varied and unique as the mortals that worship them. Some are kind, others are fluffy, and (given the nature of the multiverse) a few are Eldrich Abominations of Unspeakable Horror. But that's fine, those few tend to mind their own business... At least until an Eldrich Abomination (an interdimensional cosmic slime-mold specifically) gets itself devoured by a Lich during a ritual to obtain Godhood... Especially because anyone, even a Lich, who's willing to eat an ENTIRE COSMIC SLIME-MOLD for any reason, even godhood, is undoubtedly a madman...who's now set his unsightly gaze upon replacing (likely by devouring) the Godess of Magic herself! She could probably use some help...if only to avoid touching the slimy Lichgod directly. Also, the Eldrich Gods are protesting these events in their usual manner...by trying to destroy all of Creation.
