《The Demon Lord is Bored》Chapter Forty-Nine: Unpleasant Surprise

Holy heeck, almost at chapter fifty. Thanks for your continued support, everyone!
In the town surrounded by mountains, a beautiful inn sat nestled in between a blacksmith’s and jewel appraiser’s building.
Inside of the beautiful inn, six figures sat together at a stone table. Five of the faces went by the names of Weryn, Tear, Lilian, Vyne, and Erebus. The owner of the sixth face was a surprise to see.
The Second Dragon, Frize.
A man with the arrogant, handsome face of a young noble and arctic blue eyes so much so that they could freeze even the warmest of heart and soul. His wavy hair, a blend of light blue and silver, brushed his shoulders which were pulled back slightly as he held his stone-cut face up high.
If it wasn’t for his overall unfriendly aura and the unbearable arrogance his face held, many would swoon at the sight of him.
Actually, if anything, his face was one that made people wish nothing more than to punch him.
Repeatedly.
Until that aquiline nose of his was bent beyond recognition. Until his cherry-red lips were even redder with the crimson of his blood. Until his eyes narrowed in arrogance were swollen so much that he couldn’t even open them anymore.
His personality was just as bad as his appearance, he was a close friend of the poison-tongued Midrn. They got along for the reason that basically everyone else simply hated their guts.
“And why are you here, Erebus? Shouldn’t you be watching over your land in the Main Continent?” Frize asked while folding his hands together.
Erebus wore a sour expression as he responded, “And shouldn’t you be kissing Rolut’s ass in the Dragon Continent?”
Frize’s lips drew back into a snarl. “What?”
Electricity crackled between the two. Everyone else found themselves drawing back silently.
As for Erebus’ subordinates, they had only had a vague idea of who Frize was: someone that Erebus did not like in the slightest. And for Weryn, he knew that Frize was the second seat of the Council.
Frize only acted (somewhat) well-behaved in front of Rolut. But the moment his superior was gone, his tongue loosened and the insults rolled out in an uninvited stream.

In those moments of his good behavior, Erebus could tolerate the man. But like this? He wanted to strangle the life out of him!
Thankfully, he did not do so.
Mostly due to the unwritten law among the Dragon Council: the killing of other members of the Council was strictly forbidden, and if one was killed by the other, the perpetrator will be hunted down.
Even though there were laws against dragons killing dragons, they didn’t really apply to the Dragon Council. The Council itself had its own unspoken rules that existed.
Every being on the Dragon Continent knew this.
Anyway, this was the reason why Erebus’ and Frize’s hatred for each other did not push them over the edge.
Besides, even if they did fight without killing each other, this town and the areas surrounding it would more than likely be completely destroyed without a trace of any type of civilization ever existing there.
“Why are you here, Frize?” Erebus asked, his eyebrows twitching.
Frize scoffed. “And why would I ever tell you that?”
“Then, I won’t answer your question either.”
“What! What’s with that, answer me.”
“No way.”
Children, these two were fighting like children and not ten thousand-year-old dragons!
Frize’s hands tightened together, scales forming on them for a moment before disappearing.
“I’m here on Rolut’s orders,” he explained begrudgingly.
“I’m here because I’m bored.”
Frize shook his head. “I should have predicted that one, huh?” He sighed. “Anyway, we caught the trail of one of the dragons who had sold mana stones of the Dragon Continent and I was sent to find everything out. Since it’s now illegal, the dragon will be apprehended and arrested. Would you like to h--”
“No.”
Instantly cut down!
Frize’s eyes widened in surprise. “You don’t want to help? Wouldn’t it be fun for you?”
“Not in the slightest! That sounds incredibly mind-numbing, but... call me if there’s a fight,” Erebus said with a firm nod.
It was now Frize’s turn for his eyebrows to twitch. “That’s all your interested in?”
“Of course, it is.”
Frize sighed and leaned back in his chair. Even though he didn’t enjoy Erebus’ company all too much, the help would be nice. He was the only one investigating the subject. Maybe if he...

“Then, I’ll contact Rolut and have him order you to help.”
Erebus’ face went pale. “You can’t do that, you definitely can’t do that.”
Vyne, Lilian, and Tear looked confused. Who was Rolut? Who was Frize? What was their significance? Perhaps, members of the Dragon Council Erebus had told them about? Ah, whatever. It didn’t matter, anyway, since their lord knew who these people were.
Victory was near for Frize.
If Frize recruited Erebus, then his subordinates would help, too. That would speed up the process and allow him to end this quickly, without dirtying his hands, of course.
Frize was not a fighter. He was a thinker. Yes, he could hold his own in a battle, but like some of the others, he lacked combat experience. And there would undoubtedly be some conflict...
Plus, he didn’t like getting hurt.
“Fine,” Erebus sighed heavily. “We’ll assist you for two weeks.”
Frize nodded. “That’ll be enough for me.”
“So, what’s your plan?” Erebus took a sip of the glass of water in front of him. “You have one of those, right?”
Frize snickered at Erebus. “Yes, I do have a plan. There’s a ball occurring in a major city of the Lower Continent that’s just across the [Hungry Bear Caverns] in a week. We’ll go there.”
“What’s the point of the ball?”
“Some big-shot is hosting it. More specifically, a person who is expected to be dealing in the black market. And, it’s not a secret that a few dragons will be there helping to finance it.”
Erebus rested his head on his palm. “Eh~ that so... You expect these dragons gave him some mana stones from our continent?”
“Hopefully, we’ve had some reports that these dragons were indeed dealing in said illegal activities.”
“Ugh...” Erebus was starting to regret his decision.
The only thing interesting about this was the [Hungry Bear Caverns], but they wouldn’t be staying there long enough to exterminate all of the monsters! He felt like weeping. All of his plans... ruinted.
“There will be very important people there, including kings and queens from the four other continents...”
“Ugh!” Erebus let out another groan.
Those stiffs!
He really felt like crying now.
“Ahem... continuing on,” Frize coughed, “you’re expected to go in couples. An elf priestess is attending with me, we will meet here there. But as for your team... I’m unsure how you wish to divvy it. Ah, and Weryn won’t need a partner. As he’s a kid, after all.”
Tear and Lilian’s eyes instantly met with each other.
Who was to go as Lord Erebus’ date?
“I’ll go with Lilian,” Vyne instantly said. It wasn’t that he particularly liked Lilian, he just didn’t want to be with the pig.
“Tear and I, then,” Erebus finished.
Lilian’s expression remained impassive, but cracks could be see in her carefully constructed mask.
Her chance was lost!
“Splendid.” Tear clapped her hands together excitedly. A ball, her and Lord Erebus! They would dance, and under the starlit night sky they would...
Ah, her thoughts were running wild! How embarrassing.
“Oh yeah, Tear, Vyne, and Lilian, this is the Second Dragon, Frize.” Erebus finally remembered to introduced the other dragon. “My superior,” he grinded the last words out.
“A pleasure to meet you,” Erebus’ subordinates spoke in unison.
“What time will we be leaving?” Erebus asked after more pleasantries were exchanged.
“Tomorrow morning, we will head for the city. It’ll take two days of journey if we move at a leisure pace, I believe.”
“So we’ll have four days to waste?” Tear asked the ancient dragon.
“Indeed, during that time you all could search for something,” he raked his eyes distastefully over their appearances, “more suitable.”
Erebus let out another sigh.
He hated balls, he hated the stiffs that attended, he hated dancing...
“Excuse, Lord Frize, if I may ask you a question?” Lilian spoke suddenly.
Frize tilted his head. “You may.”
“Do you know the reason why this inn is here... I mean, it’s beautiful, but it doesn’t fit in at all in this place.”
“Oh? That. The reason is obvious, it’s because I’m here! When I heard I’d have to spend my time in this subclass town, I had this inn built with magic for my couple days stay. It costed around 150,000 gold... it was pretty cheap.”
Complete silence.

Crossroads
On the continent of Khaan, a peculiar boy escapes from his hidden village to find a land to call home. Suppressed ambitions are unveiled as a head-strong princess defies the emperor. New kingdoms expand as the old decay. This is a story of those who lived in the times of change. Dear Reader, Thank you for stopping by! This is my first attempt at writing something of more substantial length and would be incredibly grateful to receive feedback and advice. The plan is to post at least a chapter a week and more if I find time. Also, in order to not disappoint any expectations; the story plays in a fictional world reminiscent of the real world 17th to 19th century with some supernatural elements, but no obvious magic or game-like system.

Gaslgiht
There is a common line of questioning that falls upon students within their first moments at Kingsly. “Why?”. The student asks, “Why am I here?”. This is a futile line of questioning. There are those who remember, and those who do not. I’ll spare you the technical explanation — that’s what we have teachers for. The jist is as follows: those who remember are... how do I put this... more likely. They occupy more time. and the space that time has allowed them — the pertinent amount — is experienced no matter what. Allow me to offer you a bit of personal information: I am not one who remembers. There is no time relevant to me, no space that I occupy. I exist by carving myself here, and continue to exist in the same fashion. You would do well to follow suit. Why am I here? Because I force myself to be. Because the universe, the universes, for all its kicking and screaming, cannot escort me out.
