《Kenosis of the Light Bearer》Chapter 64 - Genetic Code

Lucifer asked Dr. Green if re-growing his arm was possible with today’s technology. The doctor pondered for a second and after thinking it over he then shook his head.
“No, I have no idea. I am a Sky Serpent. We barely come into contact with humans so how would I know how to do that? We Demi-Humans have different constitutions than you humans. We are more animal like than humanoid.”
Dr. Green paced back and forth as he thought about the question some more. He grabbed a knife and swiftly cut into his arm. Then he ripped it and sliced it off completely. His face had a look of deep pain and he grunted a few times in agony but after a few minutes that painful look on his face faded away.
Lucifer was greatly shocked and startled from the scene playing out before his eyes. Was this Doctor a lunatic?
From the cut, blood started to pour out but following that a thick stream of steam rose from the wound. It flew into the air and moved with the air currents. A few seconds later the steam subsided and the blood stopped pouring out of his wound. After a few moments later it started to heal over before his very eyes.
“W…what’s going on?”
“You really are a country bumpkin huh?” Dr. Green was slightly amused by Lucifer’s reaction. He took great pleasure in opening the eyes of the ignorant and watching their face flush with realization.
The wound completely healed over and from the healed over wound it started to grow and lengthen. From the lengthened growth bones started to form and eventually it took the shape of a hand again. In only 45 minutes the doctor had regrown his entire arm.
But the process looked quite painful. The Doctor had an anguished expression the entire time the bone was re-growing. He put himself through all this pain just to show Lucifer the abilities of his race.

Lucifer maintained his silence the entire time. He had seen a lot of crazy things since he arrived here, but this was definitely one of the most insane.
The Doctor smiled at Lucifer’s shell shocked face and started lecturing.
“Your cells carry DNA, this is a genetic code that tells your body how to repair itself if anything happens to it. It also carries the code for how your bones should be arranged and how your body functions. It’s a bit more complicated than this but this is a very simple explanation of the process.”
“By talking to our cells and redirecting energy towards our cells division and growth we can speed up the healing process and repair severed limbs. We call this rapid mitosis which is also known as cellular healing.”
‘What the hell… Such a thing is possible?’
The doctor rubbed his newly grown arm and massaged it a bit. Then he picked up his old severed arm and threw it into the air. He opened his mouth, dislocated his jaw and devoured it in one bite before snapping his jaw back into place. It was quite revolting watching Dr. Green self-cannibalize and eat himself, and even unhinge his jaw like a snake. But this was the future and stuff like this happens all the time.
“Of course, not everything is as simple as it seems. By redirecting energy it takes a heavy tax on my bodies resources, I lose a large amount of energy and this has to be replenished otherwise the rest of my bodily functions would shut down. Your body is always active, even when you are sleeping. So you need to keep a steady of amount of energy within your body to help it run. By eating my old severed arm I can replenish a large amount of the energy I just lost. But digestion time varies so healing multiple limbs all at once would probably kill you. It would require too much energy and that energy would be hard to replenish in a short amount of time.”

“This process is the same for my transformation. I can rearrange my cells, blood, organs and bones by sending signals throughout my body, allowing me to transform between a humanoid form and my more animalistic form of the Sky Serpent.”
Lucifer’s eyes were slowly being opened as his mind was freed of its previous shackles. This world really was a wonderful one. These Demi-Humans were like superheroes with their regeneration and shape shifting superpowers.
“Can you shape shift into a phoenix or a dragon?”
Since time immemorial people have always been obsessed with mythical beast. Lucifer was no exception to this rule. He dreamed of one day riding through the skies on the back of a dragon. And with their shape shifting abilities, surely they could accomplish such a trivial task?
Once he was discharged from his sickbed, he would definitely get Sora to transform into a dragon and ride him through the wide open skies.
But unfortunately the doctor shook his head, “While it is possible to change our facial features and bone structure, our genetic code dictates what we are. We can’t transform into wolves because our DNA lacks the genetic code. Among the Demi-Humans only the Dragonkin can transform into Dragons, or so I am told.”
‘So it wasn’t an omnipotent shape shifting ability.’
“Dragonkin. Who are they? What are they?”
Dr. Green paced back and forth, seemingly recalling some of his memories. “The Dragonkin are a race of Demi-Humans with Dragon lineage. They live in Snail Tail also known as the Desolations of Middle Earth. They are a reptilian like humanoid race. I have never seen one myself but apparently they exist, although few in number. They live in seclusion away from the world and barely make an appearance.”
Lucifer nodded his head as a hint of expectation and longing appeared within his eyes. But that quickly vanished as he looked back down at his arm and then looked over at Dr. Green’s shiny new arm.
“So you are telling me there is no known way to regrow my arm?”
The doctor sighed, “I thought you humans were like us and could regrow lost limbs. You people are so powerful yet something as simple as re-growing a limb or two is beyond your abilities? I seem to have overestimated you.”

They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
