《Kenosis of the Light Bearer》Chapter 45 - Student Housing

“Sorry, I was just surprised.”
“You said he ‘invented’ immortality? So how does one become like that. What do we need to do to become an Immortal?”
“Well, it’s really simply actually. You don’t need a fancy operation or something like that. All you need is the elixir of immortality. There are some inherit risk involved that you need to know about before becoming Immortal but all in all it’s a smooth process. The biggest problem people have with it is the price, which is around 10,000 credits.”
…
10,000 credits was an astronomical sum. In comparison, their schooling fees were only around 40 credits a year.
But now that Lucif had a price, he knew where he had to get to and where to go. His dream would be realized in this life time. His dream of Immortal Ascension!
“Okay, okay. So it’s basically a dream for the current me. What were you saying about this magic stuff? You never finished explaining it in detail.”
“That’s because you interrupted me.” She shook her head in disappointment. Of course she was acting and exaggerating but it was still quite cute.
“Yes, yes… As I was saying before. He connected this process to the brain so that you can literally control atoms using the power of your brain. By withdrawing and expanding the atoms you can recreate objects like bamboo shoots or combining atoms to create fire. Just by thinking it you can do amazing things. But with benefits there are of course associated risks. If you lose control of the atoms they can expand in your body, killing you instantly. Whether you are biologically immortal or not, it will kill you all the same.”
Gulp
“So, how does one gain this ability?”
“How? Well, it’s quite simple really. You buy a vial of blue liquid that literally changes your genes. But it takes years for it to settle in and take effect. That’s why it is given while you are an embryo in your mother’s stomach. It grows with you and changes. If you take it after your birth then the process takes even longer. For teenagers like us it would take 50 or 60 years before we started showing signs of it working.”

Argh….
“But, that all depends on your body and talent. Even amongst us there are certain rankings and different divisions. As a descendant of the true elven bloodline, I was born with the power of atomic control whilst most geniuses don’t awaken their bloodline until their 13th birthday. It was also from studying us that the elixir of awakening was created.”
This was a lot of information to take in, Lucifer didn’t rush through the conversation as he took his time to digest this new information. But then, one thing didn’t make sense to him.
“The elves allowed themselves to be studied?”
Luar pondered for a second and then answered, “I’m not sure about that, it happened hundreds of years before I was born. All I know is that amongst the major sentient races, only the Exceed were inherently immortal.”
“It had been like that ever since we had journeyed into space. At the time, we had been mortals with an average life span of 200 or 300 years. But after our meeting with humanity, the third household’s grand elder overthrew the sovereign of the Elven race and took his position. But he was different from before, his abilities were many times more powerful and he was suddenly made youthful again. That was over 800 years ago and he has ruled ever since.”
“Not long after, we had our first contact with humanity. Following that was the globalization of the awakening serum and the millennial war. I don’t know if those two things are connected but…”
She grit her teeth and clenched her fist, “Ever since then, our family…no, our entire race has…”
There were subtle tears in her eyes but they were barely visibly. After that she chose not to speak anymore. They wouldn’t pressure her to reveal more than she was comfortable with revealing. She was usually such a soft hearted and kind person, to see her like this with a completely contrasting personality made them jump.
“How much is the atomic awakening elixir?” Lucif chimed in with this question after a few minutes of awkward silence.

She cleared her throat and answered softly, “1000 credits.”
‘Tsk, a thousand credits? That’s almost a million dollars. Why is everyone so damn rich, shit.’
“Hehe, well of course not everyone is from a famous and powerful family but Aruna and Ambrosia are both double S Rank honor students. As far as I know there aren’t many double S Rank honor students in the school, let alone the cosmos. They are as rare as phoenix feathers and qilin horns. It won’t be hard for them to find a sponsor that is willing to help them achieve their goals. You on the other hand…”
Sigh.. With his scores, how could he possibly be without a sponsor? Wouldn’t they come running from each and every direction in order to win his favor? But no matter… When the VP or President returns, everything will be settled. Then he would have a smooth sailing experience throughout the rest of his high school days.
Once again they found themselves flying through the air on the skyboards. They were flying to some far off place. The academy was simply gigantic beyond belief. The building came into view and a sign on it read ‘Room Assignment and Management.’
The building itself wasn’t very spectacular but that didn’t mean it was tacky or impoverished. It was just that the building was incredibly plain and simple.
The building wasn’t very big and there weren’t many people here. The desks were arranged in a mundane pattern and people were leaving the building with housing tokens after they had submitted their I.D.
“Next…”
Aruna was first up, another teller called over Ambrosia and finally it was Lucifs turn. He swiped his gem over their scanner, it beeped three times and then a token was dropped into the box in front of him. He was given a rusty copper token. The token was circular like a coin but had two sharp points on either side that resembled horns. One side had the numbers 666 around a circle in the shape of a sharingan. He wasn’t sure if it was a 666 or three tomoe, either way they were similar. Around the triple tomoe was a dragon eating its own tail.
On the other side of the token were nine creatures. There was a phoenix, dragon, behemoth, leviathan, human, god, titan and a tiger. The phoenix chased the dragon, the dragon chased the behemoth and so on. In the middle of all these eight creatures was a golden qilin that was not part of the circle.
Aruna and Ambrosia were already back, waiting for him to finish. The process itself was very fast and efficient but the designs on the coin had him scratching his head. He didn’t understand what the artist that created this coin was going for.
They headed out and boarded their skyboards before Luar spoke once more.
“Just swipe your housing token on the skyboard and it will take you there. After we have made ourselves comfortable at home we should meet back for dinner. Let’s go to Escargots de Bourgogne tonight. I’ll meet you there, 8 pm sharp. Don’t be late!”
Luar swiped her token and flew off into the distance; the other two did exactly the same and flew in different directions from each other. Lucif swiped his token but nothing happened…
“Huh…”
He swiped it again, then a few more times before stopping. ‘I better wipe some of the rust off.’ Once he did that the board recognized it immediately and flew into the distance.

The Errant Otherworlder Watanabe
“In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and trucks whom transport men to other worlds.” Meet our titular protagonist Haruto Watanabe, a man who has all the markings of a good protagonist for a generic portal fantasy story. As an overworked office worker, to escape from the grips of crippling capitalist alienation, he had taken up to reading many stories where young men like him were transported to other worlds and enjoyed their lives at a most leisurely pace. Armed with genre-awareness and (what he believes to be) a marketable personality which would make him an easy audience self-insert, he longed for the day the isekai express would take him to his long-awaited adventure to another world. When the fateful day came, where the fair yet harsh mistress that is the fabled truck took Watanabe on one last date to the other side, he was most ready to escape his previous life, ready to embark on an errant so great he’d be most overpowered, his heroics so exceptional and his harem so vast that they would barely fit ten or twenty volumes of an overly long novel made by a desperate author looking for quick cash. Lo and behold however, Watanabe instead found himself in a low fantasy world which lacked severely in the department of any game-like systems, cheat skills or easily charmed damsels in distress. In a setting so antithetical to his established genre savviness or any attempts at power fantasy, how will a man like Watanabe, lacking in strength, wits and courage, manage to survive in a land most foreign to him? This is my first time trying to share to the wider world what I’ve written, and I hope you’ll enjoy reading the errantry of Watanabe as much as I enjoy writing about them. I'll be posting one chapter per week on Sundays, along with extra chapters whenever I get the chance to write more than usual.
