《The Lonely Scout》CHAPTER 4: THE HUT

Elven Huntress
Fallen Jungle

After a couple of hours of training, the boy raised his bow and shouted, "Let the hunt begin." I assumed that it was a human battle cry of some sort because his face went red with fury as he set off on his ‘hunt.'
I’ve been on enough hunts to know my way around tracking prey, and I was certain that this boy had no idea what he was doing. He walked around aimlessly for a few minutes before climbing up a tree to get a better look around. That was a start, I guess, but he would have tough luck finding anything through all the foliage.
He focused his attention toward something in the distance, and when I tried to find out what he was looking at, I saw the silhouette of a hut in the distance. Was that his home base? Maybe his comrades were waiting for him there. I mentally increased the boy's risk level and pat myself on the back for not taking any rash actions earlier.
I disregarded the boy's presence for the moment and made my way toward the hut. If I reached it before him, I could search through it to find any information he may have stashed inside. That's what I wanted to do, but when I got close to the hut, I saw a man exiting from its vine-covered entrance. I couldn't see him too clearly from where I stood, but I noticed he had short golden hair and point ears. He scanned the area around him, and I hid behind a tree before his eyes met mine.
Why is there a high elf here? Isn't this the boy's home base? A series of possibilities flew through my head until I stopped on one that sounded especially convincing. What if the boy was a spy who reported to an elf from a different village? It would explain his strange skills and carefree demeanor.

A shudder went down my spine as I realized the implications of my conclusion. Was another village planning to go to war against us? The stories Father told me about the last great war against humanity were horrifying. If something like that were to happen in our village...
I shook my head and snuck away from the scene quickly. I needed to make a report about this whole situation to Father before things got any worse.

The hut was unusually quiet, so I walked up to the door and knocked on it. It was made of vines and different kinds of foliage, so the knocking didn’t really make much of a sound, and there wasn’t really a door, to begin with. “Anybody home?” I called out, wondering if they could even understand me. “I’m coming in.”
I lifted the leaves at the entrance to take a glance inside, and It seemed like no one was home, so I stepped in. The inside contained a small bed of leaves and a brown bag, which I hoped had some water in it. After rummaging through the sack, I found a mirror, some water, and some strange looking clothes.
I grabbed the mirror and held it up to my face. There was dirt and dried blood all over me, and my shirt was barely holding itself together, so I used some of the water to clean myself up. Then, I changed into the fresh set of clothes, which looked like something Robin Hood should be wearing and looked in the mirror again.
I noticed that I looked a lot younger, my brown hair had turned black, and my green eyes had become a dark shade of brown. The genetic changes I experienced were a point in favor of my reincarnation theory, and I admit that I was a little disturbed at first, but I'd much rather this be a reincarnation journey than some strange coma-dream. I wondered if they had hair dye in this world since I liked my brown hair better, but I shook my head. For all I knew, this whole world was a jungle, and the people were all violent jungle-dwelling cannibals.

I left the hut with some newfound motivation and some much-needed water. I guess I just stole from whoever owned this place, huh.
Hopefully, he doesn't come looking for me.
