《Land of Ilragorn》Chapter 28- Just a day at a tavern

“Ohhh look at the little guy, he’s a fierce-looking one, what is this, analyze isn’t working.”
“I think he looks a little ugly, he should take a bath.”
“Oh shut up, you’re just saying that because he’s a chocobo, no one cares about the feud between our races and we can’t afford to do that here anyway.”
“BE QUIET!!!!”
That woke me up from being half asleep, it was the thing spewing fire last night, I poked my head up and saw that it put its head down and was trying to get more sleep, the rest of the birds did the same.
I jumped up and easily hurdled my stable door, fully awake, but hungry, I was thinking of getting some food at someplace, probably find that dwarf and then get permission to do a quest for money, or I’ll just hunt, that works too.
I barely heard this as they were trying to whisper, “Hey, where are you going, we have to stay here until our owner gets us, that’s the rules.”
“But if I go to find him then I’ll get to go get food, it’s easier that way isn’t it?”
“Alright if I can’t get no shuteye then I might as well tell ya da rules little bird.”
It was the fire beast, he seemed mad.
“Rules number one, you listen to me, rules number two, if you don’t you get burned, rules number three, IF I DON’T GET NO SHUT EYE I’LL BURN YA!”
Then a wave of fire burst over me, didn’t burn me though, which visibly surprised everyone.
“Well, see you.”
Then I opened the door and walked out, to see the dwarf already standing there.
“Everything okay in there, little bird, a wave of heat came over me as I touched the door.”
(“Yep, everything's fine, just some guy was angry at me breaking his rule three.”)
“What, rule three?”
(“Basically if I made any noise at all he would burn me.”)
“Those rules don’t sound fair, do you need me to intervene?”
(“No, everything’s resolved.”)
“You sure, that flaming bull is kinda a hot-head, I can talk some sense into it.”
(“No need, I’m starving, anyway for me to get any food?”)
“Ah yes, we’ll go to the guild, it half functions as a bar, and since mounts are common it has plenty of food.”
(“Is it free?”)
“Well no, but I’ll pay today, just don’t eat too much, and we’ll register you as an adventurer so you can make money today as well.”
(“Okay, will it be easy, I am a monster.”)
“Yeah, you’ll be fine, your species of monster is commonly friendly with humans, so just don’t be rude.”
We walk while talking about the specifics of adventurers, just the same cliche old adventurers from manga novels.
“Any way you’ll obviously start at E, and if you’re strong enough, you'll get to higher ranks.”
(“Simple enough.”)
“Okay we’re here, just act human-like and you’ll be fine.”

He opened the door, and the only people inside were four humans, two adventurers and two what look like employees, three males and one female.
One sitting drinking, looking just above middle-age, the male and female clerks are sitting in chairs behind a counter, which is a bar counter, and the final man was complaining to the guy clerk.
“Hello, Freydra, nice to see you.”
Looks like my dwarf friend knows the lady, convenient.
“Fredob, what do you want.”
“I’m doing my charity work as a soldier and helping a want-to-be adventurer.”
“Oh yeah, it is that time of the month, well where is he, by the way, I like your new mount, though he is too cute for you.”
“Freydra, you’re being rude to the new recruit.”
“Who, where are they.”
He put his hands out as if he was presenting a car, everybody looked over to me.
Everybody paused.
“A shapeshifter,” the man who was complaining to the male clerk said.
“No, a genuine chocobo, he needs money to get food and shelter let’s sign him up quick.”
“But, he’s a monster, isn’t he?”
“Yes, but he can speak, show them.”
(“Hello”)
She looked around to see where the voice was coming from, then set her eyes on me.
“Is this a prank?”
“Why would it be?”
“I don’t know, but he can’t join, he’s a monster, it’s against guild policy, you can make him a mount, but that’s it.”
“And what policy is that?”
“Common sense.”
“This is the city of Convictoni, I will not tolerate discrimination in the city I protect.”
“Look I’m sorry, but I don’t know what to do about this, we’ve never been in this situation and we don’t know what to do, we’ve been instructed to send away anything unknown, so please leave.”
“Okay, I don’t know what to do with this guy, here take him Freydra, I’ll do your evaluation for adventuring, come over here.”
“What Phylic, what are you doing.”
“Registering an adventurer.”
“But I’m not done with you.”
“Sorry, anything you need she will deal with it.”
“Are you really going to register that bird as an adventurer, it is a monster.”
“So, now your problems will be with her, good day.”
He reluctantly went over to her, but she was more interested in me.
“So bird, you talk?”
(“Yes I do?”)
“Then that makes this easy, so why do you want to be an adventurer.”
(“Money for food and shelter.”)
“Okay, that’s motivation, what is your Class?”
(“Class?”)
“Yes your Class, do monsters not have them?”
(“I guess not.”)
“Okay then, how do you usually fight?”
(“I usually kick, bite, use various magic such as fire and shadow ones.”)
I’m don’t want to reveal much yet, they might kick me out for being too powerful or something?
“Fire and shadow eh, I’ll put you as a magic brawler, last question, are you willing to fight for the city.”

(“As long as it treats me well.”)
“Honest aren’t you, most people would just say yes, but your answer isn’t bad.”
He wrote my answers down, then pulled out a paper.
“If you sign here you will be an adventurer, welcome to the arms.”
(“How will I sign.)
“Prick your finger, just some blood will do.”
He brought up a small knife.
“Use this, oh wait, no fingers, I guess your wing will do.”
I picked up the knife with my telekinesis, then tried to prick my wing, it isn’t sharp enough.
I acted like it hurt, brought it to my beak, and then bit it hard enough to draw blood.
“What was that the knife floated.”
I slid my wing across the papers sign point, then healed myself.
It signed a straight line of blood across it.
(“It’s a skill.”)
“Seems useful, but you didn’t tell me you could do that.”
(“Is that bad?”)
“I guess not, but what else are you hiding, hey, I can’t even see your status.”
(“That’s also a skill, but I can’t keep secrets?”)
He stared at me, but then let it go.
“Whatever, it was my decision to make you an adventurer, please don’t make it backfire on me.”
(“Okay, can I get a job.”)
“A job, sure, monster-slaying or gathering quest?”
(“Preferably monster hunting, I don’t know anything about gathering.”)
“Fair enough, you’re rank E right now, there are little monster quests now that the goblins recently disappeared, but still some.”
He put twelve posters in front of me, “Choose one.”
They each had a monster in front of them, from dragons to behemoths.
None really popped for me, so I’ll just choose the one worth the most money.
It’s a raccoon looking thing called a Thieving behemoth, worth thirty ewips, the currency, which is about two nights in the inn according to the dwarf.
(“I’ll take the thieving behemoth.)
“I thought you would, but I’ll have you know that this monster is usually B-Rank, but apparently this one is low-level.”
(“How will I bring back proof that I killed it?”)
“Luckily for you, this city has a great magic item enchanter, so you will be given an adventurer bag that has more space than it looks.”
(“Okay, that’s convenient, then where’s the behemoth, and where can I see it?”)
“Just outside the city to the east, take this pass so you can get in and out of the city without question.”
(“Okay, it’s a behemoth so it will come out at night time right?”)
“Yeah, it will take less than an hour to get there, so you have plenty of time to get a party.”
(“Do I have to get a party?”)
“Well no, but can you really kill a thieving behemoth without a party, it is a B-rank threat even if it is Low-Level right now.”
(“I can manage.”)
“Okay, if you die that will mean the blood off your document will disappear, telling us you failed and to send a stronger adventurer, until you’ve confirmed died we won’t send anybody though, so do it quickly.”
(“Okay, is there anything to do in this city before night.”)
“This is mostly a trading town, and you have no money, we can feed you here, with Fredob’s charity, and you can stay here until you need to go.”
“Wait, you can’t let it stay here, it might scare the adventurers.”
The girl thinking her plan would kick me out, got this reply, “Do you have eyes, this guy is adorable, who will complain.”
The day went by relatively quickly, Fredob left after I got my food, for his guard work, my food was simply some sort of mystery meat, but hey, meat is meat, and why the human side of me isn’t saying ew, that’s disgusting, I have no idea, but I don’t really care, food is food.
Some guy tried to bring his lion mount inside the building, with the excuse that I'm here, so why can’t his mount be here?
He and his lion got kicked out by all the adventurers under the guy employee, bribed by money, while the girl sat there doing nothing.
So many new people, the only thing I had to worry about was them coming over to pet me, which happened a couple of times while I was napping on the side of the wall.
I feel really weird about being pet, it’s just scratching on the neck usually, or rubbing hands against my head, but imagine if it was two humans doing that to each other, that gets awkward really quick.
About how I was napping in the middle of the day, apparently adventurers can get kind of rowdy, so they put calming candles on the counter, puts me right to sleep.
Anyway dusk was approached and I have had plenty of sleep, I was given my stuff hours ago, and I tried to leave.
“No way is a pet gonna leave on my watch.”
A mature looking woman blocked the way, spreading her limbs so I couldn’t get passed her.
(“I’m an adventurer, my quest is to hunt a thieving behemoth, my bag and pass is right here.”)
“What, what was that voice.”
My voice from inside her head shocked her enough to go into a battle stance, then I slipped by.
I looked back and said, (“Thanks for understanding, see you later.”)
I walked the rest of the way, getting a few strange looks, but no one stopped me.
The guard sees me, “Oh, you’re the Chocobo that has the thieving behemoth quest that Commander Fredob told me about, just let me see your pass and you can go.”
(“Here.”)
The pass floats in the air, scaring him, but he quickly gains his composure.
“Telekinesis must be handy, rare as well, you can go, will you be back before morning?”
(“Depends on the behemoth.”)
“I guess that’s true, hunt well.”
(“I’ll try.”)
