Eliot felt much better after releasing the contents of his stomach, his body still hurt and he was sure the pain would multiple in the morning but for now he had to focus. He looked around for his family and he was relieved to see them all behind a transparent dome on the other side of the store, craters and debris littered the surrounding area, illustrating how much damage the heart thralls could do.
More thralls were still making there way in from the huge hole in the wall, a few of their explosive friends where in the mix shuffling their feet towards his family. Eliot felt something rub against his leg, he yelped and aimed his gun at Anubis who looked confused at his reaction.
“You should really stop aiming your gun at your allies.”
Eliot yelped again, and turned around only to see Thomas, he looked no better than himself. His ice sword was shattered and he was bleeding from his head, but other than that he looked ready for more.
“Maybe if everyone stopped sneaking up on me, it wouldn't come to that.” Eliot whispered, trying not to get the attention of the slowly building horde of thralls.
“Should we try and meet with the others?” Thomas asked looking towards the transparent dome shield.
“You mean where all the thralls are going, how would we manage something like that?” Eliot asked sarcastically, while kneeling down behind some broken shelves, he unconsciously rubbed Anubis’s head to calm himself down. He may have asked the question in a sarcastic way but he really wanted to know how they would get back to the rest of them. Especially since he knew that shield wouldn't last forever.
Eliot looked down at the necklace that was around his neck, the blue glow that it used to have was now flickering as if was about to go out at any second. It saved his life just a moment ago, because without it he would probably be just another stain on the walls. It most likely wouldn't be able to take a full on hit from a heart thrall again, and his plasma gun could only shoot so many times before it needs to recharge.
Eliot was low on options and his family seemed to not be able to move away from the shield. The thralls were bashing at the force field now, cracks were beginning to form throughout the entire shield. Eliot wondered why none of the heart thrall just blew up and just destroyed the shield and be done with it but he was glad they didn't.
“Where's my aunt?” Thomas whispered
Now that he mentions it, Natalie was nowhere to be found. Eliot was so focused on his family he didn't even remember she was with them.

“I don't know, maybe she’s hiding like us, trying to stay low?” Eliot didn't even believe what he was saying himself, so he was sure Thomas didn't believe him either; but all Thomas did was nod his head.
Eliot returned his gaze to his family, what they needed was a distraction. Someone to draw all the thrall away and give them some time to get out of there. Eliot side eyed Anubis, and then slapped himself mentally. He couldn't send Anubis on a suicide mission, he would never forgive himself if he died because of it; so there was only one other option and that was himself.
He pumped himself up, trying to get ready for the unavoidable task, right as he was about to stand up there was a flash of light that accompanied a low popping sound. Three new people were now inside the forcefield, they were wearing outlandish garbs with trinkets tied throughout their clothes. All three of them grabbed someone and then they were gone, only leaving that same popping sound that they came with.
Eliot was completely stunned, one second his family was there, the next they're gone. He looked over to Thomas and noticed he had his mouth wide open; Thomas slowly turned his head and met Eliot's eyes. It took a second for Eliot to process what just happened and when he did the worst imaginable things came to his mind, his family was just kidnapped by teleporters and he had absolutely no idea why.
“We need to get out of here.” Thomas whispered, with Eliot's family gone the horde started to spread out looking for a different food venue; apparently Eliot and Thomas had raving reviews. Eliot hesitated for a second and then began to sneak his way with Anubis and Thomas to the back door of the department store.
They didn't see Natalie on there way out of the store, so she either got out or was buried underneath some rubble. Eliot couldn't decide which one was for the better, her ability has the potential to cause a lot of trouble, and Eliot didn't want that trouble to come back to him or his family.
Outside wasn't as dark as Eliot thought it would be, apparently all the power was shut down when the spires sprouted out of the ground, but the stars and the moon gave everything a soft whitish glow. Eliot had no idea where to go, but what he knew they needed was some form of shelter to wait out the night and try to figure out what happened to his family.
They stuck to the shadows and killed only the straggler thrall, no one said anything, even Anubis was completely silent. Fatigue and wariness were slowly becoming apart of them, Eliot forced his bruised body to keep on moving not wishing to slow anyone down. After and hour of searching for a suitable shelter they noticed a fire on a rooftop across the street, a silhouette of person was up there waving their arms at them to get there attention.

Eliot was about to just ignore them and keep moving when Thomas waved back and looked at Eliot.
“Come on let's go up there, there's probably more people inside with food and we’re safer with numbers.”
Eliot wasn't so sure but he couldn't deny the logic and he was getting more and more tired as time went by so he agreed and followed Thomas into the large apartment building. Someone was at the door and when they walked up to it he opened the glass doors and gave them a big smile.
The man was pretty average looking, and his job was probably to just keep watch over the door and let people in. He told them to take the stairs up to the tenth floor, he eyed Anubis suspiciously but didn't say anything about him. Once they reached the tenth floor they were surrounded by a large group of people making a lot of noise, they all seemed pretty young around the same age as Eliot and Thomas maybe a little older.
Eliot instantly reached for his plasma pistol and dagger, he drew them from their respective sheaths and aimed his gun at a large brunette girl who was closest to him. All of a sudden things got real quiet, Eliot wasn't taking any chances with these people; he’s read way too many books not to know that large groups are not usually a good thing.
“Back the fuck up.” Eliot demanded, moving his pistol back and forth. Anubis started growling baring his teeth daring anyone to fuck with his master. They started pushing each other trying to get away from his guns aim and Anubis’s canines. Thomas looked genuinely surprised and just shook his head.
“Woah woah, calm down. We’re not going to hurt you guys or anything. I'm sorry about the large crowd but they're harmless, they haven't left this apartment since the event and they were curious as to what is going on down there.” It took a second for Eliot to spot the man behind the voice, but the crowd started to part revealing a tall guy who looked around there age with short light brown hair and a solid build.
Eliot tried to calm himself down, the stress of losing his family and the fatigue was starting to fuck with him. He lowered his weapons down and pet Anubis’s head.
“Sorry about that, just to much at once.” Eliot apologized
“No worries, my name is Merrick, these are some of my schoolmates from uni. This building was kinda used as a dormitory so a lot of us are still here. There's still some adults in here though but most of them are either trapping themselves in their apartments or they have left already.” He finished with a small laugh, Eliot couldn't tell what was so funny.
“Im Thomas, and my finger happy friend here is Eliot. We just came out of a large firefight so don't blame him too much.” Thomas offered his hand to Merrick; Anubis growled looking at Eliot
“...This is Anubis.” Eliot added, can't forget him. Anubis looked satisfied at being acknowledged.
Merrick took Thomas’s hand and gave it a hearty shake before giving them a once over. He whistled “Yeah you guys look like you went to hell and back. Im sure you guys are exhausted, how about I get you some food and let you rest. We can talk in the morning.”
Eliot couldn't deny that sounded like heaven at the moment so he let Merrick lead them to an empty apartment with two bedrooms; before he closed the door to go get the food Eliot walked up to him
“Hey, not to pry or anything but it looked liked you guys haven't bought much from the satellites.”
“Yeah hard not to notice huh, but a lot of us haven't decided what to pick yet. We were thinking weapons and offensive abilities but some of us don't want to fight and we don't know how dangerous it is yet out there. That's why we’re glad you guys are here to give us a little insight.” Merrick said with the same nonchalant smile.
What a bunch of idiots Eliot thought, they're in the middle of goddamn apocalypse and there being indecisive, twiddling their fucking thumbs waiting for someone to give them answers.
“..Oh alright, see you in the morning then.” Eliot quickly said, not trusting himself from slapping Merrick hard across the face. He closed the door and walked up to the couch and layed down. He didn't have any energy to walk a couple more feet to a bedroom, Anubis quickly joined him laying his large head on his chest. As his eyes began to close when he heard a small beeping noise coming from his satellite. He looked up and saw the particles create a small screen.

Making of a Genius [A Progression LitRPG]
What does it take to climb to the top of the academic ladder? Lexus came face to face with his mediocrity the moment he arrived at Cambridge University to study computer science. There was a ceiling that he could not overcome, an intellectual world that was unreachable. But if you give a chicken an eagle's wings, it will fly higher than you could ever imagine. And that was exactly what happened to Lexus: with the help of a system, he could make it big. Schedule:1 chapter per week (every Friday evening at 5:30pm GMT). The weekly schedule is to allow time for research and factual accuracy where required. Author's Note: The story is about a computer science student at university, gradually improving and embarking on the path to become a world-renowned genius-level expert with the help of a system. There'll be a lot of studying and academics, but imagine being the best in your year. Easily. At that point, academics stops being stressful and starts being fun, doesn't it? The initial chapters are heavy on mathematical detail, but I don't expect anyone to actually read through them thoroughly. It's fine to skim them or even skip them, but I hope you try to get a sense of the progress being made, and feel happy for Lexus when something 'clicks' inside his brain :) As the story progresses, later chapters will go into less depth into individual questions, though I aim to remain consistent in terms of scientific accuracy/feasibility. Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the story!
