《When Plush comes to Shove》Chapter 88 - (hopefully) more than a generic battle

[IMPORTANT AN: Just in case I forget to go back and change it in the last chapter from this point onwards the field is made of bare dirt instead of green grass.]
Last time: Beaky and I were staring at each other while using weak spells that created sparks when they hit one another in between us.
This time: Beaky and I are staring at each other while using weak spells that created sparks when they hit one another in between us.
The battle had sort of started but sort of not started? I wasn’t actually really sure to be honest.
It reminded me of playing dodgeball in kindergarten.
More specifically it reminded me of when there are only two people left and they’re both holding a ball, they want to throw it at the other but at the same time they know that as long as the other person also has a ball they’ll easily be able to block it so no one really knew what to do and you sort of just stood there.
The students were looking intently at us, making me think they way overestimate the difficulty of using these spark spell.
Or maybe they were playing out in their heads how they would break out of a standstill like this?
Today is the first time I really meet anyone of these two classes so I had no idea what any of the students were thinking.
“Kraa!”
Beaky squawked as he suddenly reached a number of tentacles forward to conjure and lobb a few fireballs each the size of a fist at me without giving a rat’s ass about the awkwardness of the situation which was preventing me from doing anything.
“Fucking hell! You’ve got some balls to throw fire around all willy-nilly like that after what happened to your tentacle!”
Having let my mind wander like that really wasn’t helping me stay focused on the battle, I only just managed to jump to the side and avoid the fireballs yet even then one of them singed some of my toes.
“Wait, how the fuck do octopods even work? Like, do you even have balls?” I continued as I got back from a less than graceful landing
Well, at least I wasn’t lit on fire.
Actually would I even have been lit on fire?
After getting up from the ground I look at the students and see the guy that looks like orange sponge cake wearing tropical clothing from my class.
I had specifically looked for a student of mine that was standing near Beaky so that I wouldn’t have to turn my back to Beaky to talk to him
“You there, Coral was it? Remind me to check how flammable I am when class ends, god knows my memory is- GAH!”
I shout as despite my grade A plan I’m still hit in the back by a fist sized fireball and flung a meter or so forwards before landing somehow even less gracefully than before.
“Dude, that was just fucking rude, cunt. Actually how the fuck did you even do that?”
I get up from the ground with a slight wobble to my steps, feeling a bit dizzy after having been knocked forwards like that despite not having a brain or those ear fluid things I saw a show about on tv once.
‘Okay, no, stop it, I need to try and focus a bit…’
I hold my head with one of my hands and try to steady myself.
Getting out of my dazed state after about a second I look up and see Beaky creating a large nasty looking magic circle in front of him.

Then suddenly the dizziness hits me again and I fall to the floor once more.
‘Ah fuck, I need to do something or this could go real sour real fast…’
I use one of my arms to help steady myself so I don’t fall over completely while I use the other to create a small magic circle and use it on the ground below me, activating the spell made a small fist sized stone dig its way up through the dirt to let me pick it up.
“Fuck you you shitty octopus! At least squids have spines!” I shout with telepathy as I throw the rock at Beaky, wind magic helping it reach where I wanted it to hit.
“Gah!” *hack* *cough* Beaky coughed and hurched as the rock flew straight into his beak and got stuck in his throat.
Then his spell activated-
*BOOM*
-though luckily it wasn’t finished properly and instead blew up in his face, a large cloud of dust flying up from the ground due to the explosion.
Using what little precious time I managed to make for myself I used both my hands to help stand up, then with some difficulty I created large claws out of ice around my hands, taking care to make them blunt enough to not actually pierce anything important, and then charged into the dust cloud where I last saw Beaky with my ice claws pointed forwards.
I mean, it would’ve been much easier if I made the claws with my Solidification skill but since this was a supposed to be a magic match and Beaky had yet to use anything other than magic I didn’t want to be the first to break the rules.
I don’t even want to think about the kind of underhanded shit he could pull with whatever skills he had if he had the excuse of me starting it.
I plunged into the cloud and-
*woosh*
I was suddenly lifted by a strong gust which threw me upwards in the direction I was running.
‘So this is how it would feel to fight Ronnie…’ I thought as I flew away from Beaky upside down.
Well, while I was flying and looking back to where I came from I saw a bunch of soot stain all around the floor where Beaky had thrown his fireballs, odd thing was that the soot stains outnumbered the number of fireballs he threw by at least five to one.
Also I saw that some soot stains were seemingly hovering in the air in front of the students, proving that there was a barrier in place to protect them.
‘I guess that’s how he made it hit me from behind, that cunt made them bounce on the barrier!’
“And fuck you!” Squawked Beaky, very pleased with himself.
*thud* *crack*
I spun half a rotation in the air before landing on my back, my ice claws shattering in the process.
‘Well, waste not want not.’
I pick up some of the larger chunks of ice left by the claws which were laying around me and throw them at beaky, his wind spell having stupidly cleared the dust so I could aim properly.
“Oh fuck!”
Seeing the barrage of ice shards he hastily created a fire barrier which turned most of the ice into steam in front of him, though the larger chunks weren’t fully melted and still hit him through it.
I was still feeling a bit dizzy ever since the first time I had been tossed around yet I took the opportunity and ran towards him before he could take down his barrier and see me again.

By the time I reached him the barrier was still up so I used my own wind magic to disperse it only to see a large stone hand coming right at me.
The hand grabbed me by my neck and held me down to the ground as Beaky used magic to get all the water from the melted ice chunks off of him.
“Fucking fuck! I thought I was going to get steam boiled!”
“I told you that you should’ve stopped playing with fire!”
“Fuck you!”
Just as I was about to break free from the stone grip Beaky sat down on the stone that was holding me in place, the extra weight making me drop the stone hand once more.
It made me look like a person from one of those videos where people try to bench press but drop the weight onto their chest or throat.
“And fuck you right back! ‘Oh I’m an octopus and I’m covered in suction cups, look at me go!’” I shout mockingly.
“Real fucking classy!”
“Oh, and speaking of back!”
*fwoosh*
“Kraa!”
When I blew away Beaky’s fire barrier I had put the fire out, instead I had made the wind spell keep the fire alive and now I had made it fly right into Beaky’s back.
Losing his concentration made his spell crumble and let me create some distance between us.
‘Okay, size difference noted, didn’t think it would matter that he was bigger than me since it was a magic match but I guess that didn’t count as breaking the rules since he didn’t use any skills…’
“Fucking hell you heavy cunt! Have you been eating a few too many schnitzels ever since you stole the recipe from me? You weigh too goddamn much!”
“Fuck you! It’s not my fault you’re so damn weak!” He squawks back at me as he gets up from the ground after having rolled around a bit to put out the fire.
You’d think me wasting energy on telepathy spell in a battle would be a pretty bad move right?
Well you’re wrong, though not for any of those fancy “It distracts my enemy” reasons you might be thinking of.
The reason I was using the telepathy spell so much was because for some reason whenever I used a spell and spent energy the dizziness I’d been feeling all match would dissipate a little bit.
I knew many spells which used more energy that telepathy but as much as I hated to admit it Beaky here seemed to have enough experience to counter anything I throw at him if I don’t choose my moments carefully so I had to choose a spell which wasn’t actually an atta-
“Kraa!”
Beaky’s squawk alerted me to a spell circle he was making so I quickly throw both my hands forwards to create a barrier, barely getting it up before multiple beams of electricity shot out from beaky’s tentacles.
*crack*
Beaky’s seemingly never ending onslaught of thunder and lightning started to make cracks appear throughout the barrier.
“Oh fuck!” I shout and abandon the barrier, jumping to the side to avoid the electric beams, barely catching myself with my arms and preventing my face from planting into the dirt a third time.
‘Fucking fuck! Stop being distracted! Stop talking to yourself! Stop talking to the little gnome in your mind and get your head in the game god fucking damnit!’
Since I caught myself in time I was able to get back on my feet much earlier than the other times and prepare another spell before Beaky can recover from his beam attack.
‘Fuck! What do to! What to do! Ehm… Rocks! Rocks worked well last time!’
I use the same spell as before to make some stones dig their way out of the ground before using a different spell to throw them all at Beaky.
“Gah! You’re seriously throwing rocks at me now!?”
“Aha! Throwing rocks using MAGIC you motherfucker!”
“Like hell that counts!”
“Says the guy who held me in place using a very similarly magic affected rock!”
“Fuck you!”
Beaky then conjured a stream of fire which flew towards me, not yet having learned that fire is dangerous.
“Fuck off!” I shout back at him and use a spell to manipulate dust from the dirt around us to extinguish the fire before it can reach me, once more making us both loose track of each other.
“Kraa!”
Beaky squawked and threw a barrage of air bullets at where I stood the moment the dust cleared up enough for him to see even just my silhouette through the dust.
*woosh* *woosh* *woosh*
*thud* *thud* *thud*
The air bullets all hit.
The ground that is.
Beaky quickly turned around just in time to see me jump out of the dust at him with a ball of ice in my hands but was unable to do anything about it as I slammed the ball into him
As soon as it touched him the ice started to grow and spread all across him, preventing the encased tentacles from moving.
I’d gotten the idea from seeing Shiona’s powers after eating one of the ice fruits.
“What the fuck is this now!?” Beaky squawked in panic as the ice grew larger and larger.
‘Please please please please-’ I prayed as the ice kept growing,
Then he started using his own spells to slow down the ice and even start pushing it back.
‘Damnit! Okay, okay okay, he’s pushing my trump card back but it’s not over yet!’
The ice spell had been given enough energy to grow util it encase Beaky fully but since he’d started pushing it back I had to start supplying more or it would never be able to finish the job.
‘Come on….!’ I thought tensely as the ice started to grow once more.
“Kr-”
“No fuck you!” I shout, interrupting Beaky’s other spell which he’d been trying to cast in secret by momentarily cutting the energy supply to the ice spell and instead using it to cover the tentacles he’d been trying to cast it with with a cast made of dirt before ronce more focusing on the ice.
We didn’t say much more after that, Beaky put all his focus on halting the ice while I put all my focus on keeping it going until-
-until Beaky was entirely covered and frozen like a popsicle, his mouth the only thing not covered to make sure he could still breath and wouldn’t die.
I fell to the ground with my arms sprawled out, completely exhausted.
“Haa, haa…” Despite how I apparently had neither lungs nor a heart I was still gasping for air, my chest going up and down and refusing to stop supplying air to… something... despite my Lungless skill saying I didn’t need to breathe.
And it wasn’t just me moving my chest out of habit without accomplishing anything either, the cold from the ice encasing beaky turned my every breath into fog, proving that I was indeed both breathing in and breathing out.
After a short while my breathing calmed down before going back to normal and stopping completely once more and I got up from the ground.
I walked over to Beaky and prepared to make the ice go away.
Only to see his beak open with an air bullet spell circle formed above his tongue pointed towards me.
He’d probably been making this spell while I was recovering on the ground, at this point it was much more than just a normal air bullet.
“That’s not fair…”
I was way too exhausted to do anything.
I got hit by the spell and blacked out while I was sent flying backwards.
