《The Monster Inside: The First Vampire》100 (09): A Great Fire

That Tavern Master was watching him again. He thought he was being subtle, and if he was watching anybody else they probably wouldn't have noticed. But he was watching Rassa, the Vampire who could kill him without moving if he was so inclined. That dark part of Rassa found a sick sort of amusement in imagining the man's surprise upon his death. The larger part of Rassa only admitted that the man was delving into something way above his capabilities – not that Rassa was the slightest bit inclined to stop him. A simple allure would solve any problems that arose.
Aegin and Ebony ate their dinner in silence. The bare table in front of Rassa must have looked odd, but no one had ever questioned it. Maybe they just assumed he'd already eaten? Either way, it too was not of concern to Rassa. Just like the Captain and Ewan's disagreements. It was not his concern.
Of course the Captain in question, a Token if the whispers were true, strode in with the young man around Rassa's age as his company just as Rassa had finished convincing himself what was his concern and what wasn't. The two of newcomers took seats at the bar and successfully brought the Tavern Master into their conversation.
Now, despite his earlier conviction, Rassa found himself eavesdropping on them. He was such a hypocrite. He'd just condemned the Tavern Master for doing this. Still…the conversation might not have been his concern, but unlike the Tavern Master, Rassa would get away without a scratch for his wrongdoing.
"...more information?" asked the Tavern Master with a grin, "Well, you're going to have to offer more than a story about a Goddess with the tail and ears of a fox granting wishes, Jerry".
Rassa froze, the description flooring him. But...there was no way. Was there? For the first time in a month, he wanted to consult Victor, but was now incapable of doing so. All that remained was in his memories. The lessons he'd been taught those years he dwelled in chains.
They'd only been mentioned a couple of times, their existence a mystery and a rarity, but the Foxes that served Chaos were legendary. Victor had never gone into detail because even he himself knew little about them, but what he did know was that they were temperamental. One time you would hear stories of their cruelty and trickery, another of their kindness and benevolence. It was enough to frustrate. Still, if there was a possibility, even the slightest chance that...

No. It was not of Rassa's concern. Here was safe. Here, he didn't have to worry nor pay any mind to that great entity called Chaos. It was best he let it be.
Rassa stood and moved from the table without a word. Aegin and Ebony only glancing after him, knowing exactly where he was headed. It was time to take his mind off the world and hunt for his absent meal.
Hunting humans, as Rassa had worked out, was not an exact science. There was no one method to it. Sometimes he'd wait in a tavern or inn for someone to walk out alone. Other times he'd watch over darker alleyways and side streets until some unlucky individual passed through. He'd tried his best to stick to those who were guilty of something. Theft, violence, assault. It did not sit well with him to take from those who had done nothing wrong, even if they did taste better. Victor would no doubt turn his nose up at Rassa's behaviour, but keeping a low profile took priority, and those people just so happened to be the ones that lurked in shadows and darkened corners where they thought no one was watching.
Tonight, Rassa took to the roof top of the bell tower, surveying the city from the vantage point. His hearing was sharp, so it did not take him long to find a victim.
The man appeared like a rat, scurrying through side streets and back alleys with a sack thrown over his shoulder. A sack that clinked and shifted with a sound that reminder Rassa of glass bottles. Rassa frowned as the shadows had moved him from the bell tower to a rooftop where he could watch over the man. He contemplated for a moment. What was the man up to?
While Rassa had assumed that the man had simply stolen some liquor from one of the warehouses, he seemed to have intentions other than drinking his way into a haze as he weaved through back streets and alleys towards the Token district. Rassa, needing the entertainment, sat back and watched, knowing he was in no rush to collect his meal.

He followed the man via the rooftops, silently applauding the rat man's creative route. It was just a block from the docks when Rassa froze in surprise, the scent of somebody unexpected wafting towards him with the sea breeze.
Ewan.
The man in question waited behind one of the larger Token warehouses with a few other men beside him, some of them Rassa had seen earlier that day as he and Aegin left the docks. Rassa crouched beside a chimney as he watched from above, all the while beginning to question whether or not the prey he had chosen was worth whatever trouble he'd walked into. He'd told himself it was not his concern, but now...
"Good," Ewan said as the rat man arrived, putting the sack of bottles at Ewan's feet, "Each of you taken a bottle and a cloth, remember to do it quickly, in and out before the guards know what happened".
The men did as told, and Rassa watched as they each took a bottle and uncorked it, then soaked a cloth in some of the liquid before using the cloth as a type of cork in the neck of the bottle. The smell of strong liquor wafted up to Rassa, and his frown turned into wide eyes.
They couldn't be, could they? They weren't stupid enough to do it.
Rassa was proven wrong in the next instant.
Ewan lit the cloth of one of the bottles on fire, then hurled it at the wooden doors of the warehouse. The bottle smashed upon impact, and the liquor caught on fire, bathing half the door in intense flames. The others picked up various large rocks and hurled them at the burning door, which under the stress of the fire and the heavy weights hitting it, broke down quickly. The men then ran in through the burning doorframe with their own bottles, lighting and throwing them inside as they went.
Were they crazy? That was thousands of gold worth of products! No doubt tens of thousands considering it was a Token warehouse.
Rassa looked down at Ewan as the men scattered to the shadows once more.
"If you won't take me seriously, Token, then I'm sure you'll take your precious business seriously. You are nothing without it after all," Ewan proclaimed in the shadows, then he turned and jogged away as the calls of the guards rang out.
Rassa watched the blaze build and tear through all that lay inside, then, burning out of control, jump to the next warehouse. There was so much fuel for the fire within those warehouses, but if this continued, it wouldn't just be Token that was struck a blow.
Rassa reached out to the shadows, pushing power into them to grow and smother the flames. Not all of them, just enough to prevent further damages. He didn't need the Dock Masters or the City Officials to get suspicious.
He was there for an hour preventing spot fires from breaking out before the fire department finally managed to get the blaze under control. By then, Master Hargreeve and the Token Captain that Ewan was targeting had arrived on the scene to survey the damage. Rassa watched for only a few more minutes before he left, now hungrier than before.
Least he knew where to look for his meals now. That little rat man wouldn't be enough after that use of his shadow magic. He sighed to himself. What was he doing? He'd told himself that it wasn't any of his business, yet he'd jumped to solve a problem the minute it arose.
This is why you ended up in chains, idiot, Rassa scolded himself.

The Complete Alchemyst book 1
You've heard of superheroes, seen them flying across the sky, destroying great swaths of cities and ending countless innocent lives in order to defeat great evils and world-spanning threats and sell lots of sponsorships and merchandising opportunities. This is a story about the guy that is not those heroes. A supervillain in a world where making the right friends and political contacts is what separates the good guys from the bad. The Alchemyst is a story about a normal guy in a crazy world that spends his time trying to follow his dreams and conscience, working on new potions, thinking about girls, and lifting heavy shit, while trying to stay under the radar of the superheroes, supervillains, and governments that want what he can do. And occasionally turning them into makeshift melee weapons. If you enjoy The Boys, the Aberrant roleplaying game, Mystery Men, Trashy romances, Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, or SAW you may enjoy this book. Please note that this book has extremely graphic and sometimes gross fight scenes, heroes as villains, villains as heroes, opinionated and often politically incorrect characters, some graphic sex scenes, dad jokes, dirty jokes, realistic depictions of romance and flirting, bondage and dominance themes, and more than a few cuss words when they are really appropriate. This is NOT a superhero genre deconstruction. Many heroes truly are heroes, and they don't all need to be destroyed to make a good story, but it does look into the dark side of superpowers and the unreasonable and often contradictory demands placed on exceptional people.

Shift (Ben 10+DCU Fanfiction)
Omnitrix+ DCU, what's not to like? The main character will not be Ben Tennyson, rather someone from our world who gains the Omnitrix Hello! This fanfiction Shift is what I wanted to do for an homage to what I thought were underrated pieces of media, Ben 10 and some DCU characters. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add context to two of the major works that inspired Shift, Dial, and A Practical Guide to Evil. Dial is another ben 10 fanfiction, however that story takes place in the MCU, and with an adult that is already a grown-up at the beginning of the story. Dial, by my own accounts, is more superficially Like shift, even though the Omnitrix is a central device in both. My protagonist starts out around 18 years old, so is less serious and can build relationships with some of the junior justice league members, and then later on in the story meet the Justice League officially. The tone will be more light-hearted at the beginning of the story as teenagers are known to use sarcasm and jokes at each other’s expense. Furthermore, in Dial, the protagonist has a well-developed knowledge of the MCU which he uses to have knowledge on events and characters, that the character in Shift will not have. While the MC will have some knowledge of people's abilities, lesser-known characters and people's real identities will be not included as much, but the MC of Shift will have some knowledge. APGTE's influence is deeper than Dials'. The epigraphs at the beginning of every chapter are an example of that, a place for light-hearted jokes and worldbuilding that's not pure exposition, but I also want to incorporate narrative stories to Shift (heroes win more than lose, providence, etc) on a lighthearted scale. While the heroes of Shift will have to work to win against villains, the MC of Shift will be allowed limited precognition, through narratives tropes and archetypes as a trade-off of less knowledge of the DCU. For example, a villain a hero faces might monologue, but the MC will not instinctively know how to counter every villain they encounter. I also wanted to bring in more realism than usual superhero stories, ie: the MC cannot just walk and have a meeting with Batman or Superman, he would have to “work his way up” in terms of credibility and whatnot. The Aliens that show up in Shift I tried to make different than the ones in Dial, just to share the love for lesser-known characters. And to make it fairer for the villains of the DCU, the main character will not wantonly use if gain at all an Alien X or a ben 10 form of Kryptonians, just so the characters have to work a little bit for victory. I urge anyone reading to consider checking out both APGTE and Dial as they are both amazing works, and I hope you enjoy them. The beginning of how the MC enters the DCU will not be as important as him actually existing in that universe, so that is why a ton of time is not spent on that part of the story. Chapters will be around 2.5 thousand words and come out around every weekday.
