《Seekers Quest (A Post Apocalypse LITRPG)》Chapter 48 Neighbours

They stood in front of the shebeen. It looked like somebody had made an effort to improve and strengthen the building, one side was clearly a place for drinking and eating while the other was where the harvesting of bodies and some kind of kitchen was. There was a row of hungry desperate looking people waiting near the food preparation area.

"Wait here. All of you, give me your roast termite meat."

After receiving and acknowledging the transfer requests, Louie turned around and walked to the front of the line, there were some complaints but quickly grew quiet to grumbles as they saw the quality of his long coat and armor. He turned to the people in the line.

"Apologies, I will only be a moment."

"There is a row, we don't like line jumpers."

Louie was impressed, he clearly saw the fear on the face of the guy behind the makeshift counter, but he still stood up to Louie.

Name: Johannes (Jo) Cronjé

He smiled at him. "Sorry, like I said it will only be a moment, is the food free?"

"For them it is," he pointedly looked at Louie's clothes. "For you, it isn't." He gulped but stood defiant.

Louie's smile grew. "Good. This has the texture and tastes like lobster. And these are edible but spicy."

He raised a stone table behind the counter and placed two hundred kilos of the still-hot roasted termite meat and hundred kilos of the fire mushroom on the table.

"Hope it helps."

He turned away and walked back to his people while everybody in the line was still stunned at the amount of food he just dropped.

"Let's go in, heads on a swivel."

The inside of the room was quite large and surprisingly clean.

Some of the tables were already full, the patrons looked up with tired eyes as the group entered the room.

'Obviously been up during the night.'

Sher took a whiff and pointed out one of the men at the makeshift bar, Michael nodded. "That's them."

Before Louie could say or do anything. "He's mine." Said Shadow, indicating the big guy that looked like the leader of the group, Louie decided to let them take the lead.

The man looked and acted like a regular, he, together with his cronies, was leaning against the counter, smoking hand-rolled cigarettes, trying to chat to the woman behind the bar who had a slightly nauseous look on her face.

Louie used on the leader.

Name: Karl Burger

Race: (Human: Level 6)

Class: Brute

Sub-classes: Enforcer

Titles: Despoiler

He was a big, strong man. He looked clearly like someone that would use violence to get what he wanted, but what had caught their attention was the big sledge that was strapped to his back.

Having seen the woman, entering the shebeen, in the cracked mirror above the bar, he and his two cronies got up from the barstools and turned to block their path.

"I say Chicky, why don't you drop these pussies and come join us for a lekker time, you and your lil girlies there, even this one with the mask," He smirked at Shadow, "even if you are so ugly that you have to hide your face, your body looks tasty enough to eat, We will show you how Chicks like you lot should be treated by real men."

Louie saw Mainey and the teen girls, especially Trish, shrink away from them and Dan growled.

Louie hated men who think they’re god’s gift to women and that all women should want them, they all had that attitude that said, 'You should be thankful that I'm willing to spend my precious time with you.'

Sher, having grown up in the colored community where you respond to insults or get trampled, wasn't about to ignore the idiot and this gave them the opening they were looking for.

"By real men, do you mean, somebody that has been near water and soap for a bath, instead of just getting wet when it rains on them? When was the last time it rained on you? I like my men to be clean and disease-free, or do you like it when your boyfriend calls you his little dirty bitch, with the emphasis on little?"

She lifts her hand and held her forefinger and thumb a centimeter apart

There were a couple of sniggers from the patrons but cut off quickly as the idiots' friends started looking around.

"Bitch!" He roared and took a swing at her. She easily sidestepped him to the left and locked his right arm on her right shoulder. Her left hand flashed out to his shoulder and the stiletto in her hand sliced through his clothes, cutting the front of his shoulder and under his arm around the back and down the front again, cutting his joint to the bone, all the while twisting his arm while stepping to his right.

Rat Golem Stiletto (Uncommon)

A Common stiletto, with one side slightly serrated, magically forged by Louie from Golem and Ratkin items, Not bad for a first try, this knife will cut water.

Engraved with a Sharpness rune.

Level: 4

1 handed dagger

Speed: Fast

Damage: 5 + (Strength + Agility + Constitution)

10% chance to inflict

He screamed as Shadow was suddenly there to kick him in the nuts. As he bent down Sher twisted his arm popping the bone from the socket like removing a chicken wing from the carcass.

His friends stood in shock as he screamed, laying bleeding on the floor.

Sher calmly leaned over him and touched the back of his shoulder. the wound healed over.

The whole limb removal had not taken more than a couple of seconds.

She stood up and dropped his severed right arm on the bloody floor next to the whimpering man, and coldly looked at his friends.

Shadow shook her head as she turned to Sher, *sigh* "I said he was mine."

She turned back to the rest of them when Sher shrugged

"Who's next?"

The friends pulled knives and rushed forwards but were quickly disarmed and pinned to the bar.

Dan came up and sniffed at them and softly growled, "They were there, both of them."

There was a choked of scream from behind, as they swung around they saw that another guy was holding Trish in front of him with a dagger at her neck.

"Fuckers, you will pay for this.." Before he could move, a terrified Trish slapped Popie, her pet unicorn poop slime who was now the size of a big watermelon, into his hand with the dagger that was pressed to her neck.

He screamed and let go of Trish who fell to the ground and crawled away as Popie suddenly flowed like water over his body, covering him from head to toe.

Louie looked on in fascinated horror as the thug trashed around as the slime crawled into his open mouth and up his nose as he tried to scream and remove it from his body. It reminded Louie of an old movie he had once seen, called 'The Blob'. Barely a minute later there was nothing left but a big mound of bloody slime that quickly turned into a huge quivering sparkling rainbow-colored heap of jello. There was no trace of the thug left, even the floor looked like it was scrubbed with sandpaper.

There were a couple of shrieks as all the patrons rushed to get out of the way of the slime as it made its way over to the still crying Trish. The slime enveloped her in a big hug while slowly shrinking till it was its normal size again.

It still baffled Louie how the big watermelon size slime can fit into its 500ml container, but he had just seen it shrinking itself down to a small size so he just put it down to more system fuckery.

He looked at the shocked people who were still eyeing the slime warily, while they moved away from the tables to clear a space around his group.

"It's a pet slime." He looked slowly at the people and the anger crept back into his eyes as he thought of the house with the bodies and the reason why they were here.

"Not far from here, we found a house where some survivors had set up home. The women were raped and all, including the children, were killed. We tracked the killers to here, and here we found these 'things'."

His disgust was clearly evident in his face and voice. Suddenly his bowie appeared in his hand and without turning around he shoved it in under the jaw and up into the brain of one of the murderers, his team quickly took care of the rest only leaving the whimpering man on the floor.

Louie looked around at the now stunned people in the shebeen.

"As a child I was taught to never hit a woman, to be polite, and that to take a life was wrong, then I grew up." Louie looked them in the eyes, those that dared to look at them.

"Also the world changed, but these things weren't people, they weren't even human. They were trash that thought they could get away with things because they got a bit of power. Instead of helping people, they thought, 'might make right', and that they were big fish. They thought that having some power gave them the right to lie, cheat, steal, rape and murder, and there would be no repercussion to their actions."

He looked around again to make sure the point got across.

"They thought wrong. If there is something I learned a long ago, it's that there are always repercussions."

Some ducked their heads while other patrons quietly left the shebeen or moved to the sides of the room, clearing more tables for them.

Louie took the sculpture out of his inventory and triggered it.

There were shrieks of fright and a couple of shouts of amazement as people jumped when the wave of washed through the room, cleaning away the blood on the floor and giving everyone and everything else a .

Louie nodded at the shocked woman behind the bar before storing the sculpture again and started moving to the biggest table that was available.

Shadow bent over and whispered in his ear before grabbing the one-armed thug behind his neck and effortlessly lifted him from the ground. She stored the bodies in her bracelet and carried the thug out of the room together with his severed arm.

They took a seat and Leon walked up to the bar of the rapidly clearing room to talk to the woman still standing there.

They had pushed the tables together and had just settled when Leon and two women, one was the woman from behind the bar, came their way.

The other woman was huge, not fat, but at least two meters tall, and it looked like she could bench press a car. She was carrying two huge cast iron pots filled with food.

"Nickey, Cassie, these are my companions." Leon went around and introduced each and everyone coming to Celia last. "The last lady is Celia, she is our merchant. She is the one that will be doing all our buying and selling," Leon said as he finished introductions. "Everyone, these two ladies are Nickey, she and her husband are the owners of this establishment, and this is her niece, Cassie.”

Greetings were exchanged and Nickey thanked them for taking care of the trash since her husband used to be friends with them and now he is trying to keep them safe, by tolerating their presence.

Casie placed the two cast iron pots on the table and opened them.

"What is in the pots?" Louie asked.

"You are in luck, you get to choose, we have fish or wondermeat stews tonight," Cassie answered in a deep voice.

"It smells heavenly, We’ll take the fish stew," Deidre answered for herself and Francine who nodded, "Haven't had fish stew in a while and I'm getting tired of meat."

"Me too," Dan added, "Us too," the rest of the teens chipped in.

"Wonder meat?" Louie asked.

Nickey looked slightly embarrassed, "it's looted meat that the kids bring in for a bowl of stew each. I it, there is nothing wrong with the meat."

Louie nodded. "There is nothing wrong with that, I was just thinking that if there are somebody hunting creatures then we got somebody that we can work with, I will have the meat stew." He replied.

Nickey nodded. "It's a boy I knew from before and some friends of his, they run a couple of traps in the ruins. They bring me meat and they get a bowl of stew in exchange."

"Good, I think I met one of them last night, I would like to talk to them later, we might be able to help each other," Micheal said.

"I heard that you feed more than just the boys, in fact, I have seen outside that you feed whoever needs food."

She looked Louie straight in the eye as if to challenge him. "Times are tough, kids get a bowl of food, grownups are also free but it helps if they contribute to the pots, even if it's just a bit of veggie."

Louie nodded, "good, talk to us later, we will be able to help with that."

She nodded.

"I'll take a bowl of stew,” Derek said, patting his stomach and making them laugh.

"Stew for me as well," Sher told Casie when it was her turn as she held out her bowl.

"I'll have the same as Sher," Christean said when Casie was done with Sher.

Cassie went around the table filling each of their bowls as they preferred,

Sher started handing out bread.

"You got bread? Where did you get bread?" Nickey asked with big eyes. "We have a baker, but there is no flour available."

Sher shrugged and handed her six loaves.

Louie made space and indicated that Nickey should take a seat.

"I heard good things about you from Shadow."

"Shadow?"

"The lady that took the trash out, can you tell us about the challenges around here?"

She thought for a minute, "well except for the King, there is the graveyard to the east and there are reports of killer cats from the animal sanctuary, hopefully, those two problems will cancel each other out. Then we got some things running around in the bushes to the west of town, everybody that goes out there never comes back"

"Anything urgent that needs to be taken care of in town?"

"You should talk to Captain Arnold, he is the guy in charge of the militia, his guys fight all the waves that try to overrun the shacks."

"Ok, thanks, we will"

He took a bottle of 'Nectar of the Gods' out of his storage and filled her mug, the rest of them eagerly held out their glasses.

"Sorry, it's the last bottle I have. . . " he got a thoughtful look before he turned to Sher.

"You still got that Goblet we got in the Dungeon?"

She nodded before looking through her inventory and handing him a big metal goblet that wouldn't look out of place in a German beer garden.

Goblet of Relish

Once a day this goblet can be filled with any non magical liquid and for the rest of that day, it will refill with that liquid when emptied. Six times an hour

He emptied the bottle in the goblet and started to fill all their glasses as they watched on in amazement.

"I appreciate what you have done, they were trash, but you should not have done that."

Sher looked at Nickey. "Why?"

"He was the first knight to the high king, now they will come for you."

"High King? First Knight?"

Nickey looked around before she answered. "Yes, they run the safe zone."

Louie started laughing and pretty soon the rest of his companions had all joined in.

He wiped the tears from his eyes as he looked at Sher. "How original, another King."

Sher just shook her head.

Nickey jumped as there was a loud bang from the bar where Cassie looked apologetic as she picked up the dropped pot.

"You don't understand, he was a thug and murderer, but he wouldn't do anything unless the king ordered it, the king says jump and he would already be in the air hoping it was high enough."

"Don't worry about the 'High King.'" There were another couple of sniggers from the company around the table.

"You guys make it look so easy."

"What?" Louie turned to Jenny.

"Killing those guys."

Louie exhaled, looking around the table till he had all his companion's attention.

“Killing another human is never easy and it should never be easy or done lightly." *sigh* "I have found that I'm good at it and that I am willing to do what I need to do to protect and keep those that I care for safe. In the beginning, after I left the military, I've had nightmares over some of the deaths I’ve caused or seen, but lately, I found that it doesn't bother me so much, and that scares me."

He shook his head, "I hope you never have to know those feelings, but I'm afraid that things will only get worse before it gets better."

Trying to break the somber mood Louie turned his attention back to Nickey.

"So who is in charge of the town?"

She looked around to make sure nobody was listening. "There are three groups. The strongest is the High King with his walled safe zone, then the biggest is the so-called Mayor that tries to run the Shanty Town with the help of the survivalist, you will probably see them marching up and down the streets most days. The last is more of a coalition of the smaller groups."

"Hmm, so if I want to claim a section with a ruined building or two and improve it for myself, who should I ask?"

"Nobody, but if you improve it, then you must be willing and able to hold it, the King is the worst and he will try to take it from you, he has done it before."

Half an hour later Shadow was back and sat down at the table digging in on a bowl of stew she got from the counter.

Louie saw Nickey staring at Shadow as she was eating her stew while the bottom part of her mask was folded up exposing her scarred mouth.

He looked at Shadow and remembered something.

'Shit, I forgot to give Shadow that watch, I have gotten so used to seeing her with the mask, we don't think about the scars she is hiding under it anymore. I must give it to her tonight.'

He cleared his throat and as a blushing Nickey turned towards him he asked her about how the monetary system is working in town.

She explained that the king was trying to enforce the old Rand, but there is a rumor that he might have gotten hold of a treasure and a lot of old paper bills somewhere and was trying it to enforce the old money system, but most everybody else is using a barter system or trying to use the coins they got from looting.

The problem with the coins was that nobody knew what the coins were worth.

Louie removed one of the vendor tablets from his inventory and pushed it over to her.

"What's this?" She gasped as she saw that it was working. "Where did you get a working tablet?"

He did not know her well enough to trust her wholly so he explained that he got it from a System vendor and that it shows a list of items and their worth, which indicates the worth of the system coins.

"Damn, even the lowest coins, the iron bits are worth alot. 10 IB for a bowl of stew. That damn king is claiming that the iron bits are worth one cent each.

"What is this Spatial ring? And what's 1 Sq?"

"That's one square block of space, like your inventory but it's in a ring."

She was impressed, "That would come in handy, I never have enough space."

"There are bigger spatial containers."

"Wow, can I keep this?"

Louie nodded. "This is only an indication of the prices, if you need to buy or barter stuff then you can negotiate with our merchant, we are a trading company and we will be setting up a marketplace together with a headquarters for our company."

Louie removed one of the tourist street maps and spread it out in front of Nickey.

"I have looked around and I have been thinking of securing this area for our holding." He marked a space on the map with one side of the boundary up against the Safe Zone and the other side against the shantytown.

"Of Course this holding will be surrounded by a sturdy wall, and this will be a system guaranteed holding, where no monster can spawn inside the walls." He saw her eyes go wide.

"Ooh, you will have to fight the king from day one."

Louie scoffed. "We will first establish a secure marketplace where everybody can come and trade safely for necessities every day. And there will also be a big tavern with a big eatery and soup kitchen. We will, of course, need somebody to run the tavern and soup kitchen. Do you perhaps know of a person that will be able to do that?"

Her eyes lit up at the mention of the tavern. They spent another hour discussing some stuff before they left the shebeen.

The first thing they saw as they left the building was what looked like the start of a riot at the site where Sher planted the trees.

Sher shook her head as she looked at Louie.

He shrugged and knew that he did not have to tell her that he saw this happening.

As they approached Louie saw that there was a row of men and women in army fatigues armed with homemade tower shields and swords, which he guessed was the militia.

They were lined up between people, mostly kids, picking fruits, and facing off against a bunch of people dressed in what looked like mad max castoffs. Their leader was dressed in mismatched armor pieces over a fencing jacket with reinforced pants, a rapier at his side, and a fencing mask under his arm.

Name: Devon Karelse

Race: (Human: Level 5)

Class: Fencer

Sub-classes: Enforcer

Titles:

"Watch out, Mad Max leader might know how to fence, if he goes for his sword, take him down," Louie whispered as the teens and kids moved to the middle of the party.

The leader of the militia saw them coming and his eyes slightly widened as he took in their armor, which tipped off the shouting fencer.

He turned in their direction and when he saw them he sneered before saying something to the men behind him.

Sher stopped near them and they all spread out keeping the two groups in sight while still keeping the young ones protected.

Sher addressed the leader of the militia.

"Good day Sir, what seems to be the problem here? Is there a problem with the children picking fruit from my trees?"

The Captain, because Louie saw the captain's pips on his uniform, looked at the trees and then at all of them.

He realized that somebody must have told him how fully grown trees bearing fruit had suddenly appeared at the edge of their district and advised Sher about his thoughts.

The captain came to attention, "Mam. ."

"What the fuck is this?" The fencer interrupted the captain.

"Who the fuck do you think you are? Bitch, and where did you guys get your cosplay costumes? This is no dragon con where you can impress us with fancy duds. Take your soldier boys and your cosplayers and fuck off from our trees." The thugs around him sneered and shouted insults at them.

Louie knew that Sher didn't get what the guy was talking about just before she touched her OCD.

'Leon, Louie, what Dragon con is he talking about? Sher'

Louie looked at Leon and gave him a nod.

'Sher, he knows about fantasy roleplay and he thinks our armor are costumes, Leon'

Sher looked the fencer in the eye. "Aah, you think these are costumes."

Louie saw a flicker as the small trap ball appeared in Sher's hand, he saw that none of those in front of her noticed when he sent her the transfer request.

"You want to know who I am?"

"Fuck off bitch!" He spits in her direction.

She was still looking at him and saw his eyes go wide in shock as her mask appeared on her face and she spoke loud enough for everybody to hear.

"I am a Druid. Gaea's Druid!" She bent down, her eyes never leaving the shocked fencer's face as she placed her hand on the ground and BOB appeared next to her. "Together with one of our pets!"

"JESUS!. ." "Fuck." They screamed as they backpedaled and fell over each other to get away from the giant dog creature.

Suddenly the whole of Louie's party, the kids included, were dressed in armor and holding weapons.

"Who will be the first of you to step forward and try to seize these trees from me, Gaea's Champion?" She reached up and laid her right hand on BOBs shoulder while clutching a glowing upright spear in her left hand.

An arrow impacted BOBs head, not even leaving a mark, and he abruptly lunged forwards to smash through the screaming gangsters to grab and crush the archer in his jaws.

The gangsters scattered and disappeared screaming between the ruins leaving only the dead archer, a bunch of discarded weapons, and the fencer, who had fallen on his arse, and was trying to back paddle away from them, he had pissed himself.

Sher stepped towards him. "Run along, Enforcer, before our dog needs a new chew toy."

His legs were shaky as he got to his feet, his eyes never leaving BOB, he backed away, clutching the handle of his rapier.

About twenty meters away he stopped and shouted. "You will regret messing with us, the King will see to that!"

He turned around and walked away while shouting for his men who slowly slinked from the wreckage of the buildings, where they took shelter.

Sher turned back to them and came to stand slightly behind Louie who stepped forward to meet the Captain.

BOB came walking up and Sher touched him on his shoulder, still keeping the trap ball hidden in her hand, and he disappeared.

Louie used on the captain.

Name: Arnold Brand

Race: (Human: Level 7)

Class: Centurion

Sub-classes: Armourer

Titles: Resolute

Louie right-clicked on Centurion.

Centurions are inspiring leaders and master tacticians. Centurions can be found leading soldiers on the battlefield, at the head of a barbarian horde, or commanding the local militia. A strong personality and a quick mind are just as important to the Centurion as his weapons and armor.

Resolute: this person will do anything in his power to ensure that those he cares for will survive.

'Damn.'

He removed his mask and greeted the pale, wild-eyed captain by saluting him with his right fist to the left side of his chest while standing at attention. "Centurion."
