《Seekers Quest (A Post Apocalypse LITRPG)》Chapter 37 Friend or Foe?

It was his alarm that jolted Louie awake. He was confused and for a few moments he wasn't sure where he was, then he recognized the interior of the tent and all came rolling back, he got out of bed and did some stretching exercises.

Louie ran his hand over his face, he'd never had much facial hair, but he could feel the start of a scruffy beard.

'Got to get a shave and a haircut, wonder if there is somebody with a barber skill?'

He silently laughed as he remembered the one game he played where you could change your whole image at a barber for a couple of gold coins, he shook his head dismissing the silly thoughts.

He wasn't a big fan of early mornings but recalled his days in the army and a sergeant saying, 'The enemy loves to strike when you least want them to.' That's why he forced himself to get up and exit the tent.

It was still dark and the fire was still lit. He saw two guards sitting with their backs to it facing the darkness, softly talking.

He took out his tablet and saw that the nearest vendor is 15 kilometers to the west of their current position and according to his map it's somewhere in the mountains, the map only showed grey as it shows the places that they have travelled. From what he could remember when he learned the map and cartography skills, the map should upgrade and open new functions when it reaches T1.

Louie replaced his tablet in his inventory and stepped up to the fire; he couldn't believe how fast the sight of metal spiders had become a normal thing for him.

He shook his head as he watched the one guard lean over and stroke the back of a huntsman golem spider the size of a greatdane.

He shook his head again, never having thought that some of the spider's eggs would turn out the way they did. It turned out that the spider that hatched would be what spider you want, not as easy as that but close enough. Some of the guys had a vivid imagination, the fact that they are metal golem spiders also helps.

Derek, who is a blacksmith and was heavy into some fantasy games, wanted his spider to be like a fire spider that he had seen in some fire realm and got a spider that looks more like a mixture of crab and spider that can walk in fire, not to even talk about Francine's crystal spider, Bling.

Everybody was still asleep, but Louie had set his alarm for two hours earlier so he could cut up the body of the worm. He didn't want to do that last night because the last thing they needed was to have to sleep with the stench of the worm's body in their noses.

Louie sat down next to the guards. "Good morning, How's it going?"

"Morning sir, quiet, not much movement on our shift, but I heard there was some action earlier."

He nodded, "Thanks, I will follow up on that later." He studied the two. A man and woman, they looked like they were some of the former soldiers.

"Are you guys permanently attached to the caravan?"

The guy spoke up. "I'm Sean and this is Witney, Sir. As far as we know. We have been told that we are to act as guards while the caravan was doing the trading runs, so if you will have us then I think Captain Paul will make the position permanent."

Witney was also nodding. The other two guards who were still awake laying on their bedrolls next to the fire also sat up and agreed. "Me too." "Me too."

Louie studied the four of them before agreeing and handing each of them a spider egg. "You know how to hatch them?"

They eagerly took the eggs and nodded.

They froze in shock and Louie saw them reading something on their interface.

"What's up, guys? What just happened?"

Sean looked shell-shocked as he replied. "My class changed, I'm now a Caravan guard. I got a bunch of perks too."

Louie looked at the four guards as they read their status.

"Sean, can you share the class description with me?"

Caravan Guard

High-level caravan guards will be recognized by caravan masters for their expertise and will be easily hired. Due to their high perception caravan guards have a high possibility of spotting potential ambushes and potential thieves.

They are proficient in the use of ranged weapons and shortswords with shields.

They have a calming effect on draft animals.

Class Skill

Ranged weapon proficiency: lvl 4 (30/100)

Spear proficiency: lvl 7 (10/100)

Short blade proficiency: lvl 5 (00/100)

Small shield proficiency: lvl 0 (00/100)

Animal handling: lvl 0 (00/100)

Spells

Tranquillity: lvl 0 (00/100)

"My weapon proficiencies carried over to my new class and I got a new spell."

Louie congratulated them. "Well, it looks like the System thinks you guys should be caravan guards. I got the caravans, it just needs some work and then we need something to pull those caravans." He looked at the spider on guard duty. He recognized it as Micheal's huntsman spider, Rover.

He saw that the spider sat on a silk thread that stretched out into the darkness, 'wonder what that's about?'

He shook himself. 'Better get started.'

He got up and looked around for a place where he could work. He opened his inventory to see how big the worm pieces were and noticed that he only had five of the ordinary eggs and 3 Queen eggs left.

"I'm going to create a room at the front to see about starting to carve up the worm, I don't want to smell the place up."

As he exited the cave he saw that some of the spiders had woven sheets of webbing between the trees to form a kind of wall around the site of the cave entrance.

He walked towards the woven wall and reaching out he found the wall quite sturdy and not sticky at all. There was movement in the tree above him and as he looked up he saw Ansi perched on a couple of branches.

"Morning Ansi, was this wall your idea?" She bobbed up and down once.

He took that for a yes.

"This was a brilliant idea, keep the unwanted monsters from trying to sneak up on us. Nicely done."

She bobbed again before vanishing into the trees. "Damn she is growing fast."

He looked around for his pet and found BOB sauntering up and laying down next to the fire. Shaking his head he approached the cliff face next to the entrance of the cave.

He reached out with and loosen the bonds holding the rock together and let the liquefied rock flow out of the opening. He moved into the opening, creating a 20meters deep cavern 6x5 meters wide with a narrow shelf running the length of the room.

He placed everything that he might need in order on the shelf, making sure that everything would be at hand when he needed it. He hoped the boss carcass would be the same as the frog he had previously harvested, but better safe than sorry.

He took a deep breath and removed the colossal carcass from his inventory.

The first thing that hit him was the smell, quickly followed by what looked like a piece of the liver that burst from the open wound in the body.

'Ugg shit.'

He equipped the Bowie knife and started in on the nearest piece of scale-like armor plating, he tried to jam the knife in the cracks but it was tough going. Half an hour later he had only managed to remove one of the plates and he was starting to grow desperate. The knife gave a bonus of 70% to skinning but still, he made nearly no headway; the hide of the worm was just too tough and thick.

He leaned in to study the spaces between the plating when he heard the Ding and a BB appeared.

'What the fuck?'

Monster Expert (Rare)

This skill is rare and will only unlock if you study and kill five different monsters ranked uncommon and higher. Skill will unlock the Bestiary tab.

This skill gives a considerable bonus to information about living creatures. You can discover a lot more about monsters, provided they are not using invisibility or stealth skills.

At lvl 0 the loot harvested by a person with this skill has a 1% chance to include a random skill cube with one of the monster's skills. The percentage will rise with higher Tier levels of this skill.

1. Abominabunny √

2. Rabbidevil √

3. Infernal √

4. Apt √

5. Rockworm √

"What the hell?"

Louie read through the BB again.

'I did not kill the Apt, but the system must have given me credit because it's one of my party members who killed it. If that's true then the skill won't be rare for long.'

Bestiary

This journal will keep an inventory of all killed beasts with a rendition, description, and all known information about that beast.

He opened his journal on the Bestiary tab and looked at a blank page, he concentrated and thought of a rat, and on the page appeared a pic of a rat with all the information he knew.

African Giant Rattus

Description: The African Giant Rat is an omnivorous rodent that feeds on a wide range of food items. Its diet includes meat, insects, termites, fruit, and vegetable matter. Rats were not a threat to humans normally, as they were not brave enough to attack one, which changed with the arrival of the system and a growth spurt.

'Wow, this will come in real handy.'

Louie went and woke Sher, Jackson, Debbie, and Micheal up to help with the harvesting. They were a bit grumpy but when he explained about the Monster Expert skill that he just unlocked, they perked up real quick.

Jackson and Debbie unlocked the skill after studying the body for a bit since they were the only ones present who were with him when they fought the Abominabunnys in the basement.

With everybody's help and ideas they still made nearly no headway, till Louie thought of trying the engraving pen, it worked but it wasn't made for doing that kind of work and two stopped working before they had done skinning the worm. Louie carefully cleaned them up and placed them to one side in his inventory hoping that he could later figure out what caused them to stop working.

Sher was in seventh heaven with all the rare body parts that she was harvesting even though they were diseased, she was confident that she would be able to remove the disease since she had the slime gland that was the cause of the malady.

Louie was ecstatic about the skeleton of the Wyrm, he had to remind himself that this was a Wyrm and not a worm since worms didn't have any skeletons, these bones were infused with rare metals and thanks to the dismantling of the Wyrm, his harvesting skill has gone up with 7 levels.

They finished up and after storing all the parts in the bracelets Louie removed the sculpture and cleaned the room before they got ready to move out.

The stretch of road was uneventful and strangely beautiful.

Louie stopped for a moment to look at the forest down the slope of the mountain.

It looked like an old-growth forest with multiple canopies, but Louie knew it was impossible. The ground looked like a sea of moss, and here and there a giant fern peeked out from behind a tree, there were even a couple of dead trees laying down the slope. Just by looking you would think that this forest has been here for thousands of years.

It was damp, with a light breeze and a little mist, not smog. This forest was alive, green, vibrant. This was Gaea in all her glory.

He sighed, 'I always wanted to live on a forested mountain next to a river in a log cabin, away from civilization. Now I can, well except for the monsters, and I still have something driving me on. Maybe one day.'

He turned back to the road.

They were negotiating a spot where the road was torn up and trees had sprouted from the asphalt when there was a pained shout from the front.

Rushing forwards they found Louie in a fetal position. Shadow looked around trying to find the cause. She kept a wary eye on the trees as she stepped closer and was about to give him a healing potion when Leon waved her away.

"Fuck.” Louie struggled for a breath while he thought of never seeing his little ones running around. Shadow moving like a feather in the wind crouched next to him. "You ok Louie?"

"Uuuugggggg."

She turned to Leon. "What happened?"

Leon shook his head. "He forgot to watch where he was going and one of the branches smacked him in the nuts." Chris groaned in sympathy.

Leon addressed Shadow as he saw Sher coming through the trees.

“Leave him be Shadow. Go scout around, see if there are any more creatures out there."

He turned to Louie. "How many fingers am I holding up?" He held up three fingers.

"Fuuuccckkk." Louie groaned, clutching his family jewels.

Leon shook his head. "That's got to hurt," Leon said to Chris.

"That's why I wear a cup with my armor."

"You and me both, brother," Chris said as he held a fist out to Leon for a bump. The spiders crowded the tree above Louie just giving him an enquiring look.

Louie circulated Mana through his body, he wanted to use Syphon but just this morning they had all agreed not to use healing for non-life-threatening injuries, it still took a while before Louie was able to get out of the fetal position.

"Aaah, damn that hurt." He rolled on his back and slowly stretched out.

'Damn a whole level?'

Louie could hear Sher and the rest of the females giggling as Shadow told them what happened to him.

He walked past Loen and Chris, "you guys are assholes."

They snickered as he walked away.

For the next four hours, they fought monsters individually and in pairs nothing that they couldn't handle. The spiders and BOB mostly took care of the pests that might sneak up on them.

It was getting late, they still hadn't reached the tunnel and the sun was starting to touch the horizon. They came upon an old rest spot next to the road, consisting of a picnic table with benches and a garbage can, overlooking what should have been a scenic view of the lowlands leading up to Wellington in the distance but were now just one more valley covered in an alien jungle.

After deciding to camp there for the night Louie used again and made another shallow cave with alcoves for beds and space where they could erect the tent.

The spiders spun another wall, only leaving a small opening for them to enter and exit the space in front of the cave.

That evening Louie placed a couple of lightstones throughout the courtyard and after creating a workbench out of stone, he removed one of the caravans to see how he could modify it to fit their purpose.

Louie called all the traders together and told them that he had four caravans that he wanted to repurpose for their use each.

It was decided that Celia would use one so they decided to modify it like a food truck but with the merchant's chest morphed into a counter. The other 3 were going to be set up as a tailor shop for Diedre, a workshop where Micheal can work on leather and one that would be reinforced for Francine to practice her gem cutting and jewelsmithing as well as engraving.

Louie stated that he would look for two more caravans when they reached Paarl, one for Sher and Mainey for an infirmary and a mobile smithy for Derek. Louie still had a set of blacksmith tools and equipment as well as the mobile forge in his inventory.

Louie hoped to finish the seeker's quest in Paarl and return to Starter Town. Otherwise, the caravan would need to return without him and then they wouldn't have his inventory to carry all their equipment.

They worked late into the night stripping the interior of the caravans and started to remove the panels on Celia's caravan where she wanted to place her merchant's chest.

The exterior of the caravans was made from aluminium sheeting and might have a problem withstanding beast attacks but Sher came up with the idea of letting the small spiders cover the vehicles with silk webbing since they had found the webbing to be very tough and resistant to fire. But that was for later

He smiled as he saw the smaller spiders sneak some of the small cut pieces of metal away to snack on.

They cleared out the yard and he placed everything back in his inventory for the night.

The next morning they moved out directly after sunrise. Louie had a good feeling and didn't allow anything to influence him.

It was about a kilometre on that the trees and shrubbery changed again and after brushing away some of the foliage he noticed that the rock formations had also changed, it looked more like the same kind of rock as those in and around Starter Town.

Suddenly Shadow was there next to him. “We found it, the old tunnel, it is just around the next bend in the road, I don't think you will like what's going on there.”

As they came around the bend he saw the tunnel and noticed that the entrance was barricaded with motor wrecks that were rolled over on their sides and pushed to block the opening.

There was a welcoming committee.

There was an exclamation of surprise from Sher and she used her OCD to contact Louie.

Louie was not happy, all he wanted was to get to Paarl. He had been prepared to fight the TerrorApes if needed.

What he had not been prepared for was this shit, after three long days of walking they now had to face off against a bunch of bandits.

Bandits who turned out to include Sher's cousin Lee and her boyfriend, the guy that shot and killed Sher's husband, and they weren't alone.

There were about twenty-five men and women with them that would not have looked out of place in a Mad Max movie.

Four people came out from behind the wrecks carrying what can only be described as a throne. It looked like a high back chair that somebody had tried to cover in what looked like sheets of gold.

They placed the throne down and laid belly down around it on the road.

It turned out that the boyfriend was the leader as he stepped on the one guy's back and sat down on the throne.

Just like the leader of the gang in the movie, this one was also arrogant and rude, not to mention ugly and dirty. He threatened Louie, insulted him.

Louie concluded that there was no way they were going to come to a peaceful understanding, not after he suggested that Sher join his harem. That's when Louie saw the dog collar around Lee's neck.

‘Never done this to humans before, hope it works.’

'Fuckers. Ok, first the Shaman and Witch, then the rest.’

He let his smile drop away. His face had gone expressionless, his eyes were frozen pools like looking down a dark hole.

Jack leaned away from him.

“Jack, you are so out of your fucking league right now. Monsters are everywhere, people are seeing blue boxes, magic exists, and more than half of us humans are dead, and you’re going to try to rob and enslave us?"

Louie spoke slowly because he didn't think that Jack was very bright. "You and your gang of merry robbers are in the middle of fucking nowhere, surrounded by monsters many times your levels, and instead of welcoming the first group of people that you see, you decide to rob them? Truly, you must be incredibly stupid."

‘What the fuck am I doing? Why am I monologuing with this asshole?’

Jack looked shocked that Louie knew his name.

"You know who I am?"

Louie activated and then he used .

Jack had hoped to sit aside while his lackeys gave this guy a good-old-fashioned beatdown in front of his slaves and his followers. He wanted to use this opportunity to instil more fear into them, and he wanted the fancy armour and the women, especially the stuck-up bitch.

Things didn't work out as he planned.

He had just opened his mouth to insult him again when his eyes opened wide in shock as he saw the guy fall into what looked like a hole in the ground that disappeared.

Louie appeared next to the Shaman and with a kick shattered his knee, the Shaman started to scream but was cut short when the edge of Louie's hand smashed into his throat, the Shaman died choking on his blood.

The person to the right of the shaman charged in and threw a punch at him, but it was as if he sent Louie a telegraph saying what his moves were going to be, lazily Louie pushed his right hand forward, slapping the fist down. He drove the tips of his fingers into his throat, crushing his windpipe.

Louie cast at Lee as she started to chant and choking she fell to the ground.

As the shock wore off they charged at Louie but were met by spells and blades from the rest of the team.

Most of their weapons were knives or patched together sharp metal spears.

With so many of them wielding long weapons, they were more hampered by each other than able to hit Louie.

Out of the corner of his eye, he spotted the leader who had fallen out of his throne and was trying to sneak away.

He used again as he saw that it had come off cooldown and appeared behind him, created a 60cm Fireblade and cut through both his legs below the knees.

The bandit leader screamed as he hit the ground, his screams changed in pitch as he lay on his back staring at his lower legs standing next to his head.

Louie was bowled over as someone hit the back of his knees and screamed as pain shot up his back.

"Gotcha!"

Somebody was giggling like crazy while straddling his legs, twisting the knife stuck in his back.

The weight on his legs disappeared as there was a growl and a shriek that cut off as BOB ripped the attacker apart.

Louie reached back and stifled another scream as he pulled the knife from his back, he used on the still screaming Jack.

He felt his back heal as he struggled to his feet.

With his high level of health points, the knife was unable to do much damage, it still hurt like hell.

Louie quickly discovered that he had not truly mastered hand-to-hand combat, while Wu Shu and the other skills helped a lot, he promised himself that he would practice more.

Getting into the flow of battle, he started to dodge their weapons, even though it was a bunch of crap.

They missed and started to stab and injure each other. He used their own clumsiness against them, rather than trying to absorb the damage.

Suddenly the fight was over as his people and their spiders overpowered the low-level gang members.

He saw Sher dragging her cousin over to the still whimpering gang leader.

"Sher, don't kill them." He saw the storm clouds brewing on her face.

"Why not? they deserve it, look around you, look at what they did to these people, what they did to me." The last was said in a whisper as tears flowed down her face. Ansi came up to her and in her small size held up her front legs like a child who wanted to be picked up.

He walked slowly towards her as the other started to move to the edge and secure the perimeter.

Louie saw the terror in Lee's eyes as she saw Sher hug the giant spider to her chest.

She looked around and started to whimper in fear as she saw all the giant spiders and tried to crawl away, but Louie nudged her back next to the gibbering fool with his foot.

"I know they deserve it but here," he sent her the BB of the leader. "He is the slave owner."

He couldn't ask Sher to heal the guy, asking not to kill him was tough, but expecting her to heal him would be cruel.

Louie grabbed him by the jaw and forced a potion down his throat. He stopped whimpering as the potion healed his stumps.

Louie grabbed him by his jacket and picked him up carrying him to the wall where he pressed him into the rock and bound him with stone leaving him stuck halfway.

"Stay put, I'm sure Sher will want to talk to you later."

Louie looked around and saw everybody giving Sher a wide berth as she went around and looted the dead bandits.

Loen walked up next to Louie. "Don't you think we should stop her? Those are humans she is looting."

"They are dead, the moment we step far enough away from them, the system will automatically give us the loot. And I wouldn't want to interfere with her at the moment, she is not in a good place right now."

"Why?"

Louie nodded in the direction of the bandit leader and Lee. "The Witch is her cousin and the leader is her cousin's boyfriend."

Loen stopped and took a step toward Lee when Louie took his arm stopping him.

"But she is Sher's family."

Louie shook his head, "It's not my story to tell, but if I were you then I wouldn't say that where Sher could hear you."

Leon left to go and talk to Sher as Louie bent down next to the slaves that were still laying next to the toppled throne.

He tried to talk to them, tried to get them to stand up but nothing, that's when he heard the leader sniggering.

Louie looked at him.

"They are my slaves, they will do nothing but what I tell them to do. Suddenly one of the slaves jumped up and in two steps threw himself off the cliff. There were surprised shouts which quickly turned to anger as the leader laughed.

Louie cast on him and his laugh choked off as he started struggling.

Louie told Leon to get some rope and tie the slaves up.

One of the Mad Max wannabes was still alive and Sher dragged him over. He started to talk as Ansi climbed on his chest.

It turned out that they were part of the original gang members that were with Jack and Lee.

They had stopped at the picnic spot to drink some OBS the night of the pulse and were stranded. During the chaos, Lee had promised to obey Jack and she was slave bonded. When they reached the tunnel they had found about fifty people hiding there and through trickery, he had enslaved two of the women and then forced their men to bond also or he would hurt their wives, after that, some had joined willingly and the other was forced to swear. More people had joined the camp as they called it and were overpowered and made to swear, those that didn't were killed, and in the case of the women, raped and then killed.

At first, Lee tried to act as the victim but it turned out she willingly participated and even initiated some of the tortures.

They had to physically restrain Sher from killing her.

Louie turned back to the glaring leader who was still struggling to catch his breath.

"You will release their bonds, all of the slave bonds.”

He struggled and spit at Louie.

“Fuck you, you think you are in charge here! I'm the boss here, I will kill all these worthless b . . .” Suddenly he had trouble breathing with a bubble of water around his head. Sher stood fuming to one side.

When the spell timer ran out and the water around his head and in his lungs disappeared, Louie made sure he was still alive.

Leon stepped up to him. and whispered. “Louie, what are you doing? You can't torture him.”

“Leon, did you hear what he said? they tortured, raped, and killed people, and he thinks it is his right.”

He slapped the unconscious gang leader when he snapped awake and focused on Louie.

"You will release all of their bonds.”

“FUCK YOU! I will kill . . .”

he struggled to break free.

“Louie you can't do this, you're a good man, you're not a monster.”

He turned to Leon and his eyes took on a cold dead look.

“A good man? You think I'm a good man? You don't know me. You don't know the things I have done in the past, I am not a good man. This scum doesn't deserve to live."

The spell ended and Louie turned his cold eyes to Sher, who took a step back.

“Heal him.”

She cast

Louie slapped him and his eyes snapped open.

“I can do this the whole day, release their bonds.” He fearfully looked at Louie's cold dead eyes and slowly shook his head.

Louie leaned in and started whispering in his ear.

They all took a step back as he released his bowels and pissed himself.

Louie stepped back and took his bowie from its sheath.

“Release all of them.”

Suddenly the bound slaves started struggling and screaming to be untied.

Leon cut their bonds and gave Louie a fearful look as the slaves ran past the wrecks and into the tunnel.

Louie ignored them as he walked past the crying gang leader and into the tunnel.

The tunnel was longer than it should have been, at least twice as long, but that's not what stopped him in his tracks.

What he saw shook him to his core. Somehow they had carved holes in the tunnel walls and barricaded the openings to create cages, each was full of worn-out, abused and beaten down women.

Most showed signs of rape, bruises and scratches marked their exposed skin. The floors of the cages were covered in piles of dirty blood-soaked grass that looked like they had to be used to sleep on. In the cages were bowls of water and food, the kind you wouldn't even leave out for a dog.

The women shrunk away from the bars and looked up at Louie with fear-filled eyes. In the back of the cage, he saw a small naked body of a child.

Louie clenched both fists in rage, he activated and the red tint dissipated from his mind and was replaced with a burning cold. He ripped the barricades down.

"MAINEY, SHER! Get in here, people need your help!"

He bent over the unconscious body of a young girl who couldn't be more than 12, he took a blanket out of his storage and covered her bloody naked body. He nearly lost control when he saw what looked like bite marks on her chest and tiny shoulders. The older women crawled and stumbled from the cage as Mainey and Sher arrived to help them.

He activated Syphon and held it in his hand, he laid his hand on her chest and slowly released the spell tendril but instead of stealing health from her, he willed his health to be transferred to her.

He took his anger, that burning cold rage, and pulled it from his body, fused it into a solid core, and used that core as fuel for his spell, forcing it to do what he wanted. He bent it to his will and how he intended to use it.

He did not see Sher and Leon enter the cage and he did not see them shrink away from him as darkness started to radiate from his eyes.

He brushed the BB away as he slumped into his knees. The girl took a deep breath, shuddered, as her wounds closed and faded as she started crying.

Sher rushed to her side and picked her up, carrying her out of the cage.

Leon stared at the cages and shuddered as he took in the horror around him, he gave Louie a slight bow. "I'm sorry, you were right. Some things don't deserve to live."
