《The Life of a Dungeon》Prologue

It was a beautiful morning, blue sky, a cool breeze, and the sound of wildlife in the background. Teaghan took a deep breath and grinned. This was her third month in a year-long trip backpacking around the world with her brother. She was currently camping in the Black Forest in Germany. She stretched her arms, got up and went over to wake up her brother.

She vaguely noted the resigned groan of Adam. He seemed annoyed that she woke him up early. Teaghan grinned with joy. This was their fourth-day camping in the Black Forest, and she was very excited; they were going to hike up to Triberg Waterfalls. Apparently, it is one of the sites you have to see if you visit the region, and it is supposed to be very beautiful.

As she started to clean up their campsite, she felt like she was being watched. Turning around, she couldn’t see anybody and her brother wasn’t out of his tent yet. Suddenly she felt a bone-crushing pressure around her head and chest. As if something was changing in her body

Teaghan stumbled and fell, grabbing her head. She tried to hold onto something, tried to hold onto what made her, her. Something that made up fundamentally who she was - her memories. And then, she blacked out.

* * *

Teaghan Hill opened her eyes, only to find herself in a strange room. It appeared to be a room filled with miniatures of planets, none of which was Earth. She wasn’t standing or sitting; in fact, it didn’t seem like she had a body at all. She seemed to be floating amongst all those tiny planets. Where the fuck was she? Where was her brother? The last thing she remembered was cleaning up her campsite while her brother was getting ready in the Black Forest.

Slowly, she floated around the small planets, surrounded by the absolute gibberish of voices. No, not voices, mind voices. Huh, I guess that mind voices are a thing. Not that I could distinguish anything those voices said.

« Help me! … where am I … is this death … what’s happening … » and on and on! There was no stopping it.

Teaghan was slowly getting mad, but something was stopping her from feeling intense emotions.

‘Huh, why can’t I? Something is … missing. Something is … not allowing me to feel any emotions.’

She should have, in fact, felt stone-cold rage, but she was calm. It was strange.

But before she could contemplate this any further, a person materialized into the room. A short and slim woman with deep black hair and red eyes appeared in the strange room.

“What a strange woman” said Teaghan to herself.

« Hello, hello everybody! Welcome my new worshippers and helpers. Don’t worry everybody, but you died. As all of you were not attached to your common gods, were all atheists, and your world was so overpopulated, well, I decided to grab a few of you to be of use to me. »

There were several exclamations of disgust, displeasure and threats towards the strange women. Still, the women just smiled condescendingly at us.

«Don’t worry your sweet little heads, dearies. You’ll be starting a new life, so forget your old one. Now, where was I? Oh yes, I forgot to introduce myself, didn’t I? I’m Zealla, Goddess of Dungeons throughout many different worlds. If you want to succeed in your new life, you better show some respect, yes? Wouldn’t want anything to happen to you before your time. »

‘Huh? Was that a threat? Well, there’s no way in hell that I’m going to do what you want, you bitch. I think I’ll just do what I want within your … guidelines.’ thought Teaghan.

« Forget about who you were. You are going to be dungeons now. Your names will be forgotten. You will be used to help, well, help improve the local area. »

In the deep of her mind, Teaghan heard a *ding*. ‘Huh, what’s that?’

« Now, it’s time to choose where you are going. »

Suddenly, everything went silent. I couldn’t hear or see the other globes of which I assumed were the other people.

After an indistinguishable amount of time, the goddess, Zealla, appeared.

« Hello, my dear new dungeon core. It’s time to see where you are going to end up. »

Zealla snapped her fingers, and a game show spinner appeared with names covering it.

« Spin the wheel, and when it stops, that’s the planet you will go to. »

Somehow, she didn't really know how, but she was able to spin the wheel. The wheel spun and spun and finally stopped.

« Well, it looks like you’re going to Sakivis. »
