without further ado chapter 13
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Dang this dragon is heavy,” I thought to myself as I walked down the crowded capital street.
“Where do I go now, Atheros?” I asked as I dodged people.
“Keep going down this street and then I will tell you when to turn, ok elf.” Atheros replied for the 5th. I heard the dragon, who was perched on my shoulder, start to chuckle.
“Are we there yet?” Fafnir asked.
“No… we are not” I replied confused at the dragon’s increased laughter.
“Hurry up,” the dragon said, “this spell makes my scales itch.”
The three of us continued down the street and turned down the street Atheros indicated. We walked between various stalls and their keepers’ hawking their wares. I watched a well-dressed man with guards at his side walk towards us, his eyes locked on me.
“That seems to be a well-trained dragon you have there.” The man said. “I will buy it from you.”
“I would not sell him to the likes of you.” I replied flippantly; hoping not to anger the dragon close to my neck I continue. “I don’t think you could appreciate having a dragon as fine as this one.”
“What do you know stupid elf.” The man yelled, “Do you know who you are talking too.”
At this point Atheros finally caught up. “Ah, Baron Stargard,” Atheros called out, “What brings you to the city.”

The Baron surprised to see Atheros, replied, “Well, Sir Atheros, I did not expect to see you away from the castle. Do you know this elf?”
“Yes, this is Therin; he is the new hero’s personal servant.” Atheros replied.
“yes,” he replied rather loudly, “I heard about the new hero, though I have not seen the man.”
I could once again hear Fafnir chuckle.
“Well, the hero is hard at work training for battle.” Atheros replied; I could see Atheros glaring at the dragon, but the dragon was ignoring the glare.
“Well, that is convenient. I came to offer my services in preparing our hero in sword play.” the baron replied haughtily.
“I wish you well in your endeavors.” Atheros replied, trying to end the conversation, “I have been sent on a mission from the king and will be away from the castle for some time.”
“I was good to see you as well.” He said as he continued toward the castle.
“Well,” the dragon said, “why should I help you guys if those are the kind of people ruling the place?”
“please don’t judge us by a few people,” Atheros replied flustered.
“I will withhold judgement for the time being.” Fafnir replied, “Because I am wise enough to know that. Now let us hurry up before I release the spell and you have a large annoyed dragon in your city.”
---------------------------------------POV----Fafnir----------------------------
“This spell itches.” I thought to myself while perched atop Therin’s shoulder. We had walked through most of the city and I could see the city gates.
“Hurry up,” I said to Therin, “I can see the gates and the sooner I can cancel this spell the better.”
“We can only go so fast or sir too polite, will never catch up with us.” Therin replied.
“Well, we can’t all be as irritating as you.” I replied in a sarcastic tone. I turned my head to watch Atheros politely try to walk through the crowds.

“After we pass through the gates we can wait for him.” I replied trying to ignore the itch.
Dodging the crowds we arrive at the large stone gates. I could see several guards walking along the ramparts and there was a squad of men watching people walk through the stone gates. We passed under the iron portcullis and into the poorer area of the capital. Moving off to one side we wait for Atheros to once again catch up.
“How did you guys get through the crowd so fast?” Atheros asked when he catch up
“What human wants to mess with a dark elf?” Therin replied.
“Now that we are out of the gates do you wish to tell us where we are going my dear master?” Therin asked.
“I guess,” I replied, “we are going to head north.”
“Why north?” Atheros asked. “There is nothing but mountains and demihuman up there.”
“Well, I replied, “the first reason I don’t think you could comprehend.”
“And the second is for me,” Therin interrupted. “The elf villages are in that direction.”
“That is correct.” I replied. “Therin has business at home. There are other things that I can accomplish there as well.”
“What should I tell the king?” Atheros asked a bit worried.
“Tell the king I am preparing something grand or something like that.” I replied. “I still need time to consider how to deal with the demon king issue. Though I don’t think they will invade any time soon.”
“Why do you say that?” Atheros asked confusion plain on his face.
“I have my sources,” I lied, giving a toothy grin.
As we headed out of the city there was one building that caught my eye. Above the door of a large building on the sign was a crossed sword and staff. “What building is that I asked?” I asked as I could smell several magi in there.
Therin looked over and chucked a bit. “It is a branch office of mercenary guild.” Therin said, “Interested in working for people lower than us?”
“Not particularly but it does smell delicious.” I replied smelling the mana. “Let’s go, before I get hungry.”
We continued walking out of the city heading in a northward direction. Passing the run down houses at the fringes of the city and we walked out into the surrounding plains.
After leaving the city I released the spell and returned to my normal size. I started to stretch my scaled form and spread out my blue-white wings.
“Watch it,” Therin said while dodging a wing.
“Atheros,” I called out. “Does any kingdom use Wyverns as mounts?”
“Yes,” he replied, “though there are few of them as the trainers tend to get eaten.”
“Well, much as I expected.” I replied, thinking of the so called dragon tamer, “I am going to get a better view head north and I will meet you in a few hours”
“Can I ride on your back?” Therin asked I could see a glint in his eye.
“No!” I replied sharply, “why would I let anyone ride me, snack?”
“It was worth a shot,” he replied while backing up slowly. I could smell the sweat on him.
I spread out my wings before I started running. I leap up and using my powerful wings I climbed up into the sky. I looked below and I could see not only the whole capital city but I could see for miles in all directions.

Long Shadow
No destiny, no choice, no hope. Our protagonist, a coward summoned to a world meant for heroes; a new world with new rules and old cruelties. Join him on his adventures as he must deal with menus, monsters, and mysteries in this litrpg fantasy. Thomas Goodwill was an average boy with an average life, all that changed when he woke up in a new reality. Now, out of his depth, damn near out of his mind, he must learn to survive in a game-like reality with no reloads, checkpoints, or save scumming. He does, however, have a drunk snake. Thank you for reading my first story, hopefully, the first of many to come. This will be my main story and is meant to help me practice and hone my skills as I slowly produce more complex ideas. It's a litrpg in which I want to only lightly focus on the mechanics as I don’t want to pad out the word count with math and number tables and while I want to add a few of my own twists here and there, overall I’m going to keep this story close to generic as possible so that I don't let my inexperience lead me into a corner. Thanks again to all willing to leave a review or some constructive criticism, without you I'd never improve. Unfortunately, Cover art is by me.
