《The Botched Summoning》Chapter 2 – hatching

I was surrounded by warmth when I first woke up and I felt unusually tired. I tried to open my eyes, but I quickly realised that I couldn’t move. After a few seconds I heard some strange noises that seemed to surround me, it had a certain cadence, like people talking, I tried listen for a little bit, but I couldn’t think straight, my mind was clouded. The only thought I could hold onto was that I was warm. after a few minutes the voices stopped and losing the battle I fell back into the quiet embrace of sleep.
It seemed some time had passed when I next woke up, to what felt like an earthquake. It felt like my entire world was being shaken, yet I still couldn’t open my eyes. I heard muffled noises like before but I still couldn’t understand them. I tried to move around, but nothing had changed. I still couldn’t move at all. I felt a little cramped in this dark prison. Then another earthquake occurred, everything was shaking again, I heard some more muffled noises. A few minutes passed and it was quiet once more, I once again fell into the darkness of sleep.
It felt like more time had passed when I next woke up. though something felt different. This time I didn’t feel sleepy, though I felt even more cramped than before, it felt like I was encased in a small box that was three sizes too small, my entire body felt weird. It bits and pieces of the conversation with the woman drifted into my mind; she said that I was going to become a mana dragon and I would have to hatch. Feeling a bit anxious I started to squirm as much as the small prison would allow when I heard a loud crack. I suddenly felt less cramped, so I continued to squirm and another loud crack sounded out, then another, until a bright light suddenly blinded me. I blinked my eyes a few times before I could see again and in front of me I noticed four giants staring at me. Panic flashed through my mind, I tried to scream but the only sound I heard was a small squeak. I stopped for a second as I noticed that a scaly milky blue snout protruding from my face. At this point I realized that I actually had turned into a dragon.
Thinking for a bit, I started to remember parts of the conversation with the strange woman. I remembered her telling me that I had been summoned to another world and that she was turning me into a dragon, I also remembered that I had to eat the egg fragments or something terrible would happen, so I shakily stood up and started to eat them. The fragments tasted delicious, though it was a bit crunchy. I devoured all the fragments, my belly felt pleasantly full. I started to look around and I noticed that the four giants were still staring at me, confusion plain on their faces.

The giant with the beard started to speak in a language that I couldn’t understand. After listening for a few seconds, I gave up on trying to understand it. I decided that they weren’t going to kill me instantly, out of curiosity I started to look around the room. It was a nondescript stone room with no windows and the walls had intermittently spaced glowing crystals, that bathed the room in a pale blueish light. I was currently sitting on a large table and in its center; there was a large indent where, my egg was resting. As I looked around the rest of the room, I could see a fairly large pile of copper coins in the corner of the room. “Well, that is stereotypical.” I tried to say but only a small series of squeaks came out.
The noise from the four men increased; when I felt someone grab me. Turning my long neck around, I could see that the older man with the gray beard had picked me up. A sudden feeling of hatred welled up and clouded my thoughts. In a fit of rage, I bit the man that had dared to grasp me. My fangs pierced his skin and blood spilled into my mouth, it surprisingly tasted delicious. I started to fall as the man let go of me. I braced myself for the coming pain of hitting the floor, instead I felt an odd sensation coming from my back. I turned my head and, and two beautiful blue-white wings were spread out wide. My short flight ended with me in a crumpled heap on the floor. I quickly untangled myself and stood up and scurried under the table moving away from the giants. Their arguments kept get louder as I hid under the table. I watched one walk away and slam the door as they left. The others talked between themselves for a few more minutes before leaving the room.
Feeling tired from my little adventure, I started to look for some place to sleep. Looking at the pile of coins, I thought to myself: “Why not, stereotypes exist for a reason.” I walked towards the pile of coins trying to master the strange rhythm of walking on four legs. I climbed up the pile of coins and settled myself the coins flowed around my draconic form, and before I realized it I had fallen asleep.
-------------update stopped here----
The four men standing looking at the egg notice it start to move. After a few second there was a loud crack and on the side of the egg a small hole was forming. The men captivated by the sight moved closer to the table. Looking at through the hole they could see blue scales wiggling about. After a few seconds another crack was heard and another piece of the egg fell off, revealing a blue wing. The men staring watched in awe as the dragon hatched before their eyes. A minute passed and then the small dragon broke free from the egg. It looked around a bit then noticed us and squeaked and then abruptly stop like he realized that were not a threat. Then it started to move about and eat the egg fragments. All of us looked at each other with confusion on our faces.

“What is he doing?” Thantos asked.
“Beats me I normally don’t hear of dragons eating their own shell.” One of the breeders said.
“Can any of you identify what type of dragon it is?” Atheros asked
“Well I can try to cast Identify and see if I can get any information. Though I need to pick up what I want to identify. ” Thantos said.
“Squeak, squeak.” The dragon said as he was looking at the pile of copper coins in the corner.
“Seems the thing want to go to its hoard, I know I was right in making one” one of the breeders said.
“Well I will take it to the hoard and see if can identify it while carrying it.” Thantos said, “then we should inform the king that the dragon has hatched.” Reaching for the dragon he grabs it by the back and picks the dragon up. Thantos could feel the dragon shaking as he started to cast identify and then in a burst of speed the dragon turned its head and bit Thantos.
“Damn!” Thantos yelled as a wave of weariness washed over him, causing him to let go of the dragon. The little dragon spreading its wings glided to the floor and then scurried under the table.
“What happened?” Atheros asked, “And why did you drop the dragon?”
“The thing bit me and then I started to feel weak, like I had spent the day casing magic.” Thantos curtly replied, holding his bleeding hand.
“I think you sacred it” one of the breeders said looking to where the dragon scurried off.
“Well, I need to go inform the king and get this hand looked at.” Thantos said as he left the room slamming the door behind him.
“so,” one of the breeders said, “what happens now we might be good at getting things to hatch but we aint no dragon trainer.”
“Well… you are correct the request was to help hatch the egg,” Atheros said “but our dragon trainer has not arrived. Could you stay till the trainer gets here?”
“Well, what do you think, I could stay another week.” The first breeder said
“Fine, then I got to get back to my bestiary.” The other replied.
“Well then how about we go find some food for this young dragon” Atheros said, “and find out what species it is.”
Then both Atheros and the two animal breeders leave the room. Atheros makes sure to close the door behind him and walks towards the king’s chambers. Arriving at the chambers he waited for the page to return. “What are we going to do about that dragon?” He said to himself.
With the page returning he is escorted to the king’s study. Walking into the study Atheros kneels saying, “My king, I bring news on the dragon.”
“What news do you have about the egg,” the king asked while sitting back in his chair.
“My king the egg has hatched and there was as we expected a baby dragon though we have not as of yet been able to identify the species.” Atheros reported. “Though there was an incident when Thantos tried to identify the dragon. He was bitten and then hit with mana depletion.”
“Mana depletion?” the king asked, “How did he lose his mana?”
“My guess is that the dragon ate it when he bit Thantos.” Atheros replied
“When is the Dragon tamer arriving?” the king asked.
“We have receive word that the position was accepted and that he will arrive within the next two weeks” he replied to the king.
“Good, I want to try and tame that dragon and learn its secrets.”
“Yes my lord, as you command.” Atheros stated as he then got up and left the study.
Having given the report to the king Atheros walked to the butcher to obtain various meats to try to feed the dragon. Obtaining the food he walked to the dragon’s crèche. Opening the door he could see the small dragon curled on top of the small pile of copper coins sleeping peacefully. Not wanting to disturb the hatchling, he left the meats on the floor and got a few servants to replace the large table in the center with a smaller on to be place in the opposite corner. Returning to his room he wondered just what kind of dragon was it.

8 183The Mortal Acts
The Mortal Acts is an epic progression fantasy with a lower focus on training aspects and a great focus on discovering new ways of using powers intelligently. I've always been drawn to stories where characters use their powers creatively to overcome opponents and obstacles, and I think all the possibilities can provide a great playground for twists and turns. It's inspired by a variety of media, including Will Wight's Cradle, Hunter x Hunter, and Bioshock, so if you like the creative power use elements from those, come check it out. This is my first serial, and please feel free to leave comments and feedback. For backstory, behind-the-scenes, and other fun stuff, come chat on my discord! Become a patron to read up to 20 chapters ahead here! Blurb: Riven Morell cuts short his regular life at school and home when his mother falls terminally ill. Desperate to find a cure, he travels to Severance Frontier, a desolate land haunted by hordes of ghosts, witches, and demons collectively called the Deathless. But a miraculous cure doesn’t magically fall into his hands. Things are worse in Severance Frontier than Riven had assumed. Ghosts are banding together into armies, demons are kidnapping anyone who strays out of settlements, and witches are enslaving everyone left and right. Riven, of course, gets embroiled in the mess. Missions to curb the Deathless activity are one thing, but when it starts to look like this is just the beginning of a war that extends beyond the mortal realm, Riven has a hard time focusing on why he came to Severance Frontier in the first place. His mother is inching towards death with every passing day, but if he doesn’t face down the Deathless, what little civilization the Frontier holds will be overrun and destroyed. Thankfully, it looked like the Deathless might just hold the secret of the elusive cure.
