《Just a Rock》Chapter 44: The Birdnest
Advertisement
Life inside of a bird's nest wasn't too bad. Not that the rock had a life. The bird, either out of laziness or some other reason, left the rock within the nest. As the days passed, the hatchlings slowly grew up and accepted the rock as a normal part of their lives. In the early morning, they would keep their distance from its cold exterior. While during the day and at the early times of the night, they would snuggle up against it to feel the warmth it held.
When the bird came bearing food, it would occasionally use the rock as somewhat of a kitchen. Placing prey on top of it and taking advantage of its hardness to butcher and remove dangerous parts before feeding its young. The rock became stained with red blood from small mammals and blackish fluids from insects. As time passed, it started to smell funky. The hatchlings did not mind as the entire nest smelled like bird shit anyways.
Nonetheless, this environment wasn't destined to last long. The hatchlings quickly reached an age where they no longer needed to stay in the nest. They were no longer hatchlings but adolescents. Once the day came where they could fly on their own, one by one, they leapt from the nest and took flight. The young birds and their mother left, perhaps never to return.
All that was left was the rock and a bird shit coated nest. Without the birds, it was empty and lonely. The smell became more and more unbearable with each passing day, only to be relieved by the occasional passing rain shower. Thankfully, the rock lacked a sense of smell. After a few weeks of this, the nest started falling apart. Normally, bird nests were quite durable but the rock and the rain showers placed more weight and wear than it was used to with no bird to keep maintenance. One day, the nest broke and the rock fell through, falling back to the earth.

HUD: Wargame (Sci-Fi GameLit)
★★★★★UNFRIGGENBELIEVABLE!!!!!! "HUD: Wargame is a sci-fi GameLit worth reading." -TienSwitch ★★★★★Rock-solid FPS GameLit. "Nic - the main character - is an ambitious, hyper-competitive perfectionist, and the story fortunately handles him correctly in that it does not push these traits too far." -Akaso ★★★★★This is a good one! "This is one of those stories where you read the first few paragraphs and can just tell that the author has the chops to tell a story. It's engaging and the rules are well thought out and clearly explained. The action is punchy and exciting. Anyway, read it." -HonourRae In the future, everything is a game.
