《Just a Rock》Chapter 43: Eat and be Eaten

The result was, of course, the wasps' victory. They ravaged the colony and killed all of the ants. All that was left was bringing out the spoils of war. Ant carcasses were dragged out en masse. The queen and her eggs made for quite the feast. Lastly, the corpses of the fallen wasps were brought out as well for consumption. It did not matter that they were their own or that it was cannibalism, the food was scarce and one couldn't afford to be picky. This didn't just apply to the wasps as they soon learned.
A large bird swooped down and grabbed the rock with its talons. A large group of wasps were hanging out on the rock and stuck out to the bird while it was choosing its target. It landed on a nearby tree branch and ate some of the wasps as they desperately tried to bite and sting its feet. The bird's skin was too tough for the wasps to hurt it. Most of the wasps were trapped between a rock and a hard place, the bird's talons.
The bird found this to be convenient and took flight once again, heading into the depths of the forest. There lied its nest and three hungry hatchlings. The bird placed the rock alongside the wasps inside of the nest then began using its beak to remove the wasps' wings and stingers. The wasps were disoriented from the flight and sat there like birds with their heads chopped off.
The hatchlings constantly made chirping sounds as they begged for food. One of the more brave hatchlings attempted to eat one of the wasps before its stinger was removed only to find out the hard way why its mother was removing its stingers. The ants killed the wasps for food, the wasps killed the ants for food and revenge, and then the birds fed off the gathered wasps. Such was life. And now the rock was stuck inside of a bird's nest.
