《Just a Rock》Chapter 15: The Cut

The old fisherman and youth would only check the net once a week. In-between those checkups, it was pitifully boring. If only the power to just cut all the boring parts existed… then again, the boring parts are what makes the interesting parts so special. What’s better? Cutting it out then starting afresh or continuing with boring parts intact to make the good parts that much better? Don’t answer that.

Only checking weekly became a fatal flaw for the fishing operation. Humans instinctively seek out water for their needs. Even the most secluded fishing spot could be found and ransacked given enough time. And a river like this was by no means secluded. Soon, a group of construction workers appeared and set up camp.

Nearby trees were felled to their cutting axes and boulders were smashed by their picks. They had a rhythm and unity to them, the way they destroyed things so quickly and the fact they were all topless and buff. This river, formerly surrounded by trees and natural landmarks, suddenly had a clearing around it. Only the stones within or on the beaches of the river and some skinny trees were spared this reckless destruction. As for the boulder, it only survived because when they hit it with a pick, the pieces that fell off were rough and jagged, not useful for whatever project they were working on.

One of the workers eventually noticed the fishing net as their net of operations expanded. By this point in time, almost a week had passed by already. A rough framework made of wood extended over the river while stones were fitted inside of it. A bridge was being made and the rock was free to witness it without worry. However, being undetected wasn’t feasible as the stones keeping the net up were arranged in a pattern that could be discovered and found to be suspicious within seconds. And that’s just what happened.

The worker slammed his axe downwards. It cut through the net with ease. All the work the old fisherman put into making the net, gone in an instant. It could be repaired, but who’s to say the worker wouldn’t continue until the net was completely destroyed. Next, the worker stretched out his hand and grabbed…
