Prologue
A long time ago, thousands and thousands of years into the past, there was nothing but an empty void and a barren and desolate world. It was then that they appeared, the six Gods who would turn this dead planet into their home.
The first to come was Auromi, Goddess of Life and Love. She had deemed it worthy enough to support life and gave it her blessing along with the very first lifeforms.
Next to come was Raylen, goddess of Nature and Indifference. So the new lifeforms could live she planted a massive tree that seemed to reach the stars. It was from this tree that all other plants would grow.
After her came both Calgar and Nighorum. Calgar was the God of War and Valor. With his arrival the lifeforms began to fight each other. Death and plundering ravaged the land which suited Nighorum just fine.
Why was that? He was the God of Death and Hate. As the wars continued he laughed and welcomed the souls of the dead with open arms. With his arrival, the deathless lifeforms had also started to die from disease and old age, further fueling their anger and sorrow.
The chaos continued with the arrival of Laanex, God of Commerce and Greed. With his influence certain lifeforms had started to use the wars for their advantage, amassing materials and food for themselves while exploiting others.
It wasn’t until Measha, Goddess of Peace and Harmony arrived, did the fighting finally come to an end. With her words and wisdom she guided the lifeforms to co-operate with each other for the betterment of all.
With the six Gods settled into their new home, gradually the balance returned.
However a new problem had arisen. The Gods had exhausted most of their energy coming to this world and they needed a way to replenish it.
Auromi purposed an idea. “I shall create for each of us a humanoid race that will be superior to the first lifeforms I created. They will then follow our teachings and in doing so, we will be able to grow stronger.” The other five agreed and thus the six high races were born.
Born from the earth was Raylen’s race, the Aborians. Their body was sleek and smooth, like polished wood, while their two arms and legs were covered with a rough bark-like texture.

Forged from his spirit was Calgar’s race, the Iusties. Standing tall and proud, they were a race with strong muscles and four long, fluffy ears.
Split from his soul was Nighorum’s race, the Terraruims. With skin as black as night and sleek angular horns, they were perhaps the strongest of the races, albeit the fewest in number.
Hatched from his mind was Laanex’s race, the Callidi. Resembling normal humans, they were the plainest of the six races, but the most adaptable.
Emerging from her heart was Measha’s race, the Librians. Tallest and calmest of the races they always had blonde hair and bright green eyes.
Lastly, coaxed from her womb was Auromi’s race, the Ventrises. An all-female race, they were soft skinned, slender, and well endowed. Their beautiful looks were complimented with long and flowing silvery hair.
With this the Gods slowly but surely regained their power and for a time the races lived in harmony. It was then a certain event happened.
A disease Nighorum had created ran unchecked for too long. It swept the land and killed hundreds of thousands.
Auromi couldn’t take it anymore and launched her complaints to him. She then said one sentence that Nighorum couldn’t let slip.
“Wouldn’t this world be better off without you?”
That was the spark. Enraged, Nighorum turned to Laanex and Calgar.
“Aren’t you sick of those Goddesses? I bet they wish you guys were gone as well. To them we are only a nuisance. What do you say? Are you with me? Let us put them in their place!”
This marked the beginning of the War of the Gods. Landscapes were warped. Continents vanished. The seas rose and fell and a whirlwind of storms ravaged the planet. The races that once lived in harmony now fought each other with a bloodlust and zeal like never before.
It was during this period that the most terrible of weapons were created. With all of the souls of the dead swirling around the gods used them to create sentient weapons and servants whose souls almost rivaled the Gods themselves.
After a thousand years the battle had reached the climax. The six Gods faced each other with weapons drawn. It was Measha who spoke first.
“Everyone please lay down your arms. Hasn’t the fighting gone on for long enough? This planet that we made our home, it is worse than when we found it. If we continue fighting we soon won’t have a place to call home.”
It was Nighorum’s turn to speak.
“I will not relent until that woman acknowledges that we are not worthless, that we are just as important as the rest of you!”

All eyes look to Auromi.
“I work hard to give my children life, so why is it that they have to die? Your very existence is nothing but to undo all that I strive for! There is no way we can embrace each other with our ideals so different.”
Brandishing a wicked scythe, Nighorum responded.
“I will embrace you Auromi. I’ll embrace your soul as it leaves your corpse!”
A slash faster than light, that could cut even the flesh of a god.
However the flesh it cut was not that of Auromi’s, but that of Calgar’s. He had jumped in front of Nighorum before he swung and took the blow meant for the Goddess.
“Wha-!”
The Gods were speechless. Only when Calgar hit the ground and cough up blood did time start moving again. All the Gods rushed to his side.
“Why Calgar?! Why did you save that woman?!” Nighorum shouted. Everyone else had the same question.
Calgar looked up to him, and then slowly looked at the other Gods.
“It’s because I’m tired of this. I the God of War should revel in our fight, yet why is it that I feel so tired and helpless? It was only when I realized that winning the war, meant losing those dear to me. You five are what our servants would call family to me. I cannot bear to lose any of you. That is why I jumped between you two. Ha ha, was it foolish of me?”
Everyone shook their heads.
Nighorum said. “Calgar you are a brother to me. All this time fighting with you and Laanex by my side, how to describe it… I feel very close to you both.”
“I as well.” Laanex added. “This feeling of ‘family’ I’ve begun to see why mortals treasure it.”
The goddesses chipped in. “We feel the same! Even though we fought, we never wanted this outcome.”
Auromi knelt next to Calgar and held his head in her hands. “Why is it that only now, do I not want to fight? And this feeling in my chest… it hurts? Calgar, you’re fine right? You can be healed right?”
Tears welled in her eyes. The answer to her question was obvious. Calgar will die.
It then raised questions the Gods never asked themselves.
What happens when we die?
Where do we go?
Will we ever see each other again?
It then dawned on them the magnitude of the situation.
“What… have I done?” Nighorum weakly said. He was the God of Death yet why did he not know these answers?
Calgar’s breathing slowed. His pulse growing weak. “It’s not your fault… I’m the one… who jumped in the way. Nighorum… don’t feel bad. I hold no grudge.” He coughed and blood runs from his mouth.
“Calgar!” Nighorum shouted.
Looking him in the eyes Calgar asked. “Can you all do me on favor?”
“Anything brother.”
“Don’t fight amongst yourselves… Measha was right… We are all we have…"
Nighorum answered in a weak voice. “Of course, leave it to us.”
Shortly after Calgar, God of War and Valor died. The Five Gods watched with tears in their eyes, as his soul scattered into the atmosphere.
The fighting had ended and all the Gods were stricken with grief. It was then they had an idea.
To prevent this tragedy from happening again, the Gods made a pact with each other. The pact had five rules that the Gods had to abide by no matter what.
1. The Gods and their servants cannot physically interfere with the planet.
2. All disputes on the planet must be solved by the races themselves.
3. The Gods may grant blessing and have champions among the races as long as it does not break rule 1.
4. The Gods must keep the planet in balance. No one God can have too much influence.
5. Gods can never have another war with each other; all disputes must be solved without it.
With the pact in place, the remaining Gods combined their powers to create the Celestial Realm. It would be from here that the Gods and their many servants that they created would watch over the world as it grew.
A million years have passed.
On the plain where the War of the Gods ended, sits a solemn statue of the War God overlooking the horizon. A lone figure stood in front of the statue. It was then that the air grew thick and rich with magical energy. This energy amassed at the statues base, when suddenly an armored hand shot up from the ground.
It grasped at the air a few times and then slowly pulled itself up. Following the gauntlet was the horned shaped helmet. Then the chest appeared, adorning its shoulders was the fur of an ancient beast. Finally it stepped up out of the shallow grave and dusted off the sturdy cloak wrapped around its waist. In the gaps of the armor, there was an amber glow of pulsing energy.
It was at this time that Calgar, God of War and Valor, had returned to life.

Shadows in the Dawn Mist
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] - Winner November 2020 When a young woman is lured back to her homeland for the opportunity of a life time, she must face old fears. But never would she think that facing up to her past would change everything. Is History written by the victors, or by someone or something else...? *** I started writing this a few years ago and eventually fell out of love with it. I never finished it and my newer books are being written in different writing style, and genre with a more planned process. I decided to revisit it for the writathon and found that it wasn't as hopeless as I'd come to think. Hopefully, I've improved as a writer since them so the consistency may vary. Its been good to revisit and analyse my writing which I feel used to have some clunky and obvious dialogue which I'm trying to fix. This will always be my first novel and I hope, with a little exposure, I may come to like it again. Thanks for reading!
