I woke up full of beans and ready to rock and roll!
I cheerfully pecked away at the rest of the tasty blanket, it wasn't as delicious as it was as yesterday and it was smelling a little bit yucky, so I quested to find a new blanket as soon as I finished the yummy bits. I found the blanket's legs to be the most flavorful and sweet.
I walked through the darkness on my quest to befriend a new little blanket, a bigger one would be nice! One that I can use like a cushion would be most desirable!
After a minute of cheerful marching I spotted the glowing warmth of fire bouncing off the wall around the corner. I quickened my pace to round the bend, expecting to find something new and incredible. What I was greeted with put a dampen on my jolly mood.
I had accidentally backtracked all the way back to the intolerable, big, brown hill of a bed. I must have gotten turned around when that pesky blanket tried to run away from me. With an outrageous chirp I rustled my feathers and stomped back the way I came... again.
The soft clicking of my talons on the floor were rhythmic and soothing, soon the silly mistake was all but forgotten as I started to whistle a cheerful tune to the clicking beat. The tunnel I was waddling down seemed all but endless, but that was ok, I still had many different songs I wanted to sing.
So I walked and sang for hours down the gloomy path, every so often I would come across another fire on the wall, unfortunately I wasn't able to reach any, I really wanted to touch the fuzzy fire. There were a few more brown blankets on the floor too, but they were all able to nimbly dodge my feathery grasp. I was a bit upset by the rejection, but drowned out the sorrows by singing an even happier song.

By the time I reached the 10th fire of the wall my tummy was grumbling like a wizened wizard!
I tried to peck at the green dangling thingys on the walls, but they tasted like how the brown bed smelled, bad. The dangly green aftertaste had me spitting and spluttering for minutes! The whole time that I was suffering I was unable to even whistle out more than two notes, so my usual method of coping with disappointment was squandered and I was feeling quite unhappy.
Needless to say, the next fuzzy blanket to wander too close was mercilessly chased down in my tantrum.
Bright red feathers were launched into the air as I pecked furiously at the fleeting tail. I was slowly falling further behind, but I wasn't going to let it get away so easily, I was too hungry to stop.
I got lucky when the blanket trapped itself between two large rocks. As it tried to jump over the rocks I swiftly pumped my wings up and down as I leaped to the skys towards it's soft back. In total I probably got an extra 2 centermeters of height on my jump, so basically nothing, but I was able to clench my talons on to the brown rug's legs, preventing it from running.
4 Piercing Damage
Or so I thought.
Suffered 3 Slashing Damage
With my talons stuck into it's back my body was dragged along the ground as it hulled me away. The little sharp pebbles on the ground poked at my head as I was dragged over, some of them really hurt!
Suffered 3 Slashing Damage
I could've let go and searched for another blanket, but that wasn't happening. I flapped my wings like a maniac on the hard floor, sometimes swatting the blanket's tail, but inflicting no real damage. I was confused as to what to do! My legs were preoccupied and my head was too far away to attack! All I could do was hang on for dear life.

Suffered 4 Slashing Damage
I was rewarded for my decision to hold on when the blanket did a 180 turn, in a vain attempt to flick me off. The blanket had underestimated by foot strength and now my head was by it's head. I lunged in for a open-mouthed bite on it's soft skin and my beak clamped around it's loose skin, giving me another purchase on it's body.
+ 1 Strength
Now by using my beak and a single foot for grip, I swiped with my free talon at it's side, drawing a flow of sweet red blood.
3 Slashing Damage Common Rat is bleeding
It was a shame that the blood was going to waste, but I was too hungry to complain... much.
3 Slashing Damage
The blanket ramped up it's speed as I swiped and even managed to throw me off when my beak teared off the flesh it was holding onto. Just a single talon wasn't enough for me to remain mounted on the bleeding blanket and I was sent tumbling away. When I stopped barrel rolling from the momentum I quickly jolted upright and hurried after the bleeding cushion.
I found it shortly afterwards and when I did, it was curled up in a corner and breathing haggardly. I hopped up to it gleefully and pecked forcefully at the biggest wound on it's side.
7 Piercing Damage Common Rat slain, 4 exp gained
Yum yum! Nom nom!
Yup! So much tastier when they're fresh!
I stuffed down the whole blanket in 30 huge bites, leaving only the thin white parts and the soft skin. I then began tearing away at the fuzzy fur, trying to rip it off the hard white bits, I wanted to take the nice blanket with me, but it was not to be, it was glued on!
"Oh well, even if I can't have the fuzzy, at least I'm not hungry anymore" I whistled into the stone ceiling as I waddled back down the dark tunnel.

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
