《I am Urist》Day 18 - Part 5 - Magic Swordsman Volt

A hum could be heard in the air coming from the swordsman. It didn’t take long for Urist to notice the bits of electricity that danced up upon the hostile dwarf. He knew if they carelessly talked, this dwarf would retaliate. And from the pressure coming off him, Urist knew he would lose in a straight-up exchange of blows.
Keeping a neutral expression Urist replied calmly, “Well you see it goes like this…”
In was a tense twenty minutes as Urist and co, explained to the tense old man why he was here. And another ten minutes to search through his memories for him to be relaxed to the point that only his hand was on his sword’s pommel.
Feeling it was a good time Urist asked the knight, “So Sir Volt will you help us against the horde of rats that will soon be upon us.”
“No.”
Unicy looked at the man in shock at his simple answer, “Wha? Why? If we don’t have everyone fighting we could all die.”
The old dwarf shook his head, “I cannot fight for someone weaker than me it is my soul oath. Unless one of you can defeat me in an all-out one on one fight I can only wield my blade for myself. If I try to fight for someone without serving under a lord I will die.”
Ubel snorted at the old knight, “He’s useless if he gave such a soul oath, might as well have him do chores or teach sabership.”
Raising an eyebrow Urist turned to Ubel, “Can you explain what a soul oath is?”
“It’s layman's terms it an oath that people do to gain power. The more restrictive the oath the stronger the person becomes. But there are limits to this kind of power in such that a body can only handle three oaths at most. And if those oaths contradict each other well… The body explodes and the soul is erased. In my world, it’s a forbidden art only used when someone has reached their full potential. Isn’t that right magic swordsman.”

Nodding his head Volt nodded his head, “You speak the truth. But unlike those you talked about I was forced by... an evil lord to take the oath. Well, there is more to my tale, but I best not bore you. Just know that the choice wasn't made easily.”
Ubel gave a small chuckle, “You found such a useless lord. Now that we know he isn’t useful to let’s go look over the others and see what they have to offer.”
Without a lack of remorse, Ubel turned away from the old man and began walking towards the mages to wake them up next. Unicy looked at Ubel with mouth agape wondering how he could be so heartless to throw someone so powerful away.
However, the old man didn’t take it to heart as he knew he was useless. It was Urist who broke the awkward air set by Ubel, “So you can’t fight. Can you train people in the art to defend themselves? Unicy is good at it but she specializes in mounted combat using archery.”
Volt gave a smile.
“Yes I can do that it'll give me something to keep my mind busy. Give me the peasants for a day and I can at least teach them how to stab with a spear. A week and they will be competent and in a month proficient. I also know saber arts but it’s not something anyone can learn. And finally, I can teach those who both have the talent in the blade and magic how to be a lightning magic swordsman. That is what I can offer you at the moment.”
“That’ll do nicely for our plans, I expect to summon more peasants so this will be fine. I’ll request the smiths and carpenters to finish those spear shafts. Now let's go summon and wake up the rest.”

It took some time to get through all the summoned members but they managed to do it with less of a challenge that Volt came with. Among their ranks was a unique mage named Ayil that said she uses fist magic?
The three dwarfs never heard of it but Volt had and began chatting up the weird mage at the side. Uria came by to take the still slightly confused dwarfs, to show them around and get them settled.
The two earth mages joined the three other earth mages to expand the dormitory for the new arrivals. Volt and the new Fist mage stuck around to see the Urist summon 20 commoners to which Volt took control of them and headed out of the cave to start training them as spearmen. The Fist Mage tagged along with the old magic swordsman leaving the three alone to do the final summoning.
With the remaining 1000 points, they talked about summoning two more earth mages or just doing another random summoning and gamble some more. In the end, the three agreed it was best to spend it all again in random summoning.
It turned out fine before, so what’s stopping it from giving some more good men and women to fight together on the front lines. With a small grin, Urist spent the points and took a deep breath when pressing the confirm button. And this time even though they were summoning less the light shine even brighter than the last causing Urists heart to excitedly pump with anticipation
This time he was able to keep his eyes open a bit, allowing him to see two of the ten figures giving off the same intensity of light the old magic swordsman was giving off. Cracking a wider smile Urist hoped that at least one of them wouldn’t have the same kind of restriction that haunted the knight.
With the light clearing Urist turned to his companions, “Well let's see what we have to work with shall we.”
“It better not another person with a stupid restriction”, Ubel replied.
“I hope they know how to use a bow well.”

Viridescent Core
Some mortals see dungeons as a plague to destroy. Some mortals see dungeons as a resource to manage and harvest. Some mortals see dungeons as a place to train and advance. However, all of them agree on something. Dungeons are unnatural and deadly. Places where death stalks every corner and monsters thrive. What mortals forget, in their hubris of tools and civilizations, is that Mother Nature is often the deadliest of all. Feel free to write any comment, suggestion, or criticism. I read and appreciate every single one! Releases are on Mondays and Thursdays. With occasional bonus chapters on Saturdays. Have a nice day ^^

Kreig Goes Apesh*t (An AU of Returning to No Applause)
An AU of my previous story, Returning to No Applause, that asks the simple question of "What if it all went wrong?" When Kreig first appears on Earth again, after being stranded in another world for 130 years, he finds himself faced with weapons and guns. In a fit of instinct, he accidentally murders one of the many Fighters, causing what can only be described as a massacre to take place. The story that follows this simple premise is completely opposed to the one told before, focusing less on character improvement and more so degradation. It should come as no surprise that I personally recommend reading the OG story before checking this one out, and if you've already done so, great! Swell havin' ya! Any such readers might remember that I mentioned writing a story like this a while back, and... Here we are. This is in no way a continuation or sequel, nor will it be very long. Expect around 15 chapters at most depending on various factors. All and all, the 5-page length will remain the same (apart from chap. 1) and so will the release time, Sundays at 20:30 EST (I think?). All that aside, I sure hope you'll enjoy this! It'll obviously be very different from the OG story, but I personally think that's a good thing. Cheerio!

Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021. Warnings: Second person is used in this work. Semi-Polished draft: Posted chapters are subject to revision as needed as things progress. Mild Profanity on occasion.
