《Mystery of the Dungeon》Chapter 10 Dungeon Levels

At the moment I was listening to Reylin tell me about the dungeon. Specifically why Rey beat the six kids black and blue.

Hearing the reason and what happened made me release so much concentrated pressure that the area around me began to blur from my rage.

The six brats were shaking in their boots

Grant: ‘So Rey, your telling me the first floor was left similar to a level one dungeon. Because of that you six brats got cocky and called the whole dungeon a level 1 dungeon huh. A dungeon that killed an ex B rank Adventurer and 9 of his C rank fighters and 20 D rank monster hunters.’

The boys had their heads downs so they could hide the fear showing on their faces but they still felt the inescapable presence of the commander.

Grant: ‘Not only that you go and make fun of that dungeon, calling the dungeon lord to the first floor and even think of attacking something beyond your level. You kids have better be ready because Sir Reylin’s beating isn’t going to be the only one you get. I’m also going to tell all your families as well as all your masters. You kids are about to face the most painful period of your lives, you have better get rid of your cockiness now or else it will only get worse. Now you are dismissed.’

The six scurry out of the room leaving me with Rey and Theo. I sit back down and rest my arms on the table and hold my head while breathing deeply. After a bit I rein in my anger to a degree and sit back in my chair looking at the two elves.

Grant: ‘Thank you for not letting them die. Now then, with the layout draw and monsters categorized I will allow for novice to fight up to the first wild cat room but with a supervisor as leader. Beyond that the novice will need to be at least level 15 in their first class before I am willing to allow them through.’

Rey: ‘Will you also use the dungeon for training?’

Grant: ‘Sorry but I can’t, our join is to conqueror dungeon. If we find one the orders are to eliminate it. We have gone against orders because of this dungeon special method of safeguarding itself as well as showing its intelligence at fighting large numbers efficiently. I don’t want to lose too many men trying to beat that dungeon. If my men die then it would make it even easier for the nobles to sink their rotten claws into what remains of this kingdom.’

Theo: ‘Have you heard, several noble families were found dead in the last few days. The populous think that it’s because they were the ones backing Morgan. Now that the crime lord is gone and the syndicates organization is in chaos they lost the fighting power and were killed of by competitors.’

Grant: ‘Yes, I heard. Its disgusting how those pigs deal with each other and the people but I am only a single man ordered to protect my people. If I could I would cut the head of every noble and distribute their wealth to the public but then it would leave too much power loose for the taking.’

They both nod in agreement.

Rey: ‘Well, we must be going. We are rather busy at the moment. Thank you for taking your time and evaluating the usefulness of the dungeon.’

I nod at his thanks and they leave.

In my head I was thinking about this dungeon and the guild. I don’t know about them but research on dungeons haven’t advanced as it used to. The guild still discovers many of the dungeons adventures go to and are considered the best in locating them but the research itself has been at a bottleneck.

I wonder if this dungeon has anything to do with them? I doubt the elf will tell me anything in the open like this. I wonder if a visit at night would help. No I would probably die if I try sneaking into the guildhouse.

Guess the front door is ok.

I was rather pissed right now. Let me explain why.

After the group of guard trainees finished the first floor they began to insult me. Nothing wrong really, normal ideas of a dungeon is a den of mindless monsters.

What pissed me off was calling me a Level 1 dungeon.

Let me explain a dungeons levels first. It's not how many floors we have but our threat level. A level 1 dungeon, no matter how big it is, a dungeon which only houses a stable ecosystem for regular animals and a single abnormal boss monster or no boss monster at all. Normally you would find a larger than normal alpha or elite but a boss monster is always an abnormal monster of the largest populating monster in the dungeon.

Above that level 2 begins appearing mutated monsters which are stronger but still within the realm of animals.

Now what I believe myself to be is a Level 3 dungeon. In this level of dungeon magical monsters appear. The best indicator is the presence of magic using monsters. The presence of Feral rats if rats live inside is also a good indicator of reaching this level. They are near the bottom but once they become feral they force the animals in the upper levels of the food chain to evolve or be killed by their prey.

Level 4 is a dungeon which appears magical beasts. Magical beasts are monsters who accumulated so much MP that they became humanoid and highly intelligent. Demi-humans and Beast humans are said to be originated from a Level 4 dungeon being born from monsters in the dungeon. These dungeons are also extremely huge being already over 100 floors.

Finally a Level 5 dungeon is the most dangerous. It’s a place where only heroes, demigods and even gods, can walk.

In the world there are only 4 Level 5 dungeons and are all named after the four beast of destruction who were sealed inside.

I definitely fall under level 3 since I have ferals but jumping to level four would take years probably. The MP needed to change a monster into a humanoid is very large, as strange as it sounds. You would think it would take less MP. Still the monster doesn’t exactly need a human body for it to be humanoid. A Treant is considered a humanoid, well one that has gained reason.

Now you might say I am level four because of the goblins but they are considered animals because they are so stupid. Even ranking the goblins up still wouldn’t cause me to gain the Level four.

It requires monsters to be complete rational beings. Take the Feral rats into consideration. If Dalson made Dad rank up to a rat man he still would be a monster even though he is more human. Until the rank up says something like, “Race Beastman (Feral Ratman variant)” Or something he will stay a monster.

Still even though the brats made fun of me I got to watch a good show. Man it was nice to see Rey lose his temper for once. The man is stiff as a rock on his gentleman like grace act but when that is gone you see the man as he is.

Its rather scary to see Rey let loose. He is, in the best of words, ruthless. take a human army Sergeant who trains the new troops. Now amplify that ruthlessness by 5 and you should get a basic idea of how he acts.

Even though he was like that I didn’t consider it above the normal. Elves are a race that lives a long time, as a drawback, they have a small birth rate. That means that they need to be powerful to survive the slavery and monsters of this world. Though it doesn’t show since Elves are seen as a graceful race, that is something taught and not an instinctive race trait. I just say what kind of attitude they would take for teaching their young.

Still the kids were strong. The wild cats and mongrels aren’t a joke since they can easily kill a normal citizen. The group was able to easily adapt to the rough uneven ground of the cave floor and sometimes used the rough and sometimes jagged cave walls as a weapon by pushing an animal against it making the rocks stab them from behind.

They were definitely taught well. That was why when I had Rey drain them of their mana as payment for the insults I gained a good 2500 points from them. At the end of the day, with the animals they killed I gained 3480 MP and was able to expand the corridors of the second floor more making them longer and a bit more maze like.

I would need a lot more before I make the labyrinth that was planned out.

Hours later some of the guilds humans came by and dropped animals I have been hoping for. They were small but it didn’t matter since they would grow large. Yep the most awaited animal, lizards.

They were dropped off in the first room since they were small.

I looked at the nest area and just like all other animals, I found a new option for nests for them.

I put one in the first room and let them eat up the bugs. I kept rats and bats away from them.

The nest was already set to put cores into the new generation.

After they had their fill I took over and led them to the nests. With that I caught my first lizards.

I will need a few days for them to hatch. Then some more time for them to start mutating. I’m sure they will separate between bug and meat eater.

I will try to limit the size of the ones in the first floor, maybe make the separate races, while letting them get at least 3 meters long on the second floor.

Anyway I name the first generation Lizardlings as the basic lizard form.

The 8 original lizards died soon after they laid around 30 eggs which hatched around 10 minutes later. The bodies didn’t get absorbed and instead were used to feed the babies who soon ran out of the nest and started to feast on the bugs. They reached adulthood after an hour of eating the bugs as the MP gathered inside them.

This was the most interesting part of breeding animals. They grew up fast, breed, lay eggs and die. This goes on for 2 more generations until the lizards are in good number of nearly 200 and about the size from the tip of a humans hand to the elbow.

I end the breeding phase here which stopped their frenzied evolution. I then split the 200 lizards into 2 groups and nests.

One group was put into room 2 and the other remained. I set the room 1 group to eat bugs only while group 2 would hunt bug eater lizards, rats and bats.

Like before they entered the frenzy. The bug eaters in the next generation were smaller and began gaining features similar to a gecko which helped them climb the walls. The other group grew double its size and gained stronger muscles, scales, fangs and claws.

I called the first floor ones geckos like the regular ones outside while the bigger ones were dungeon Lizards.

I then split both groups once more in half and took them down to the floor below.

The geckos will be a good new source of food and the dungeon lizards will make a powerful breed of fighters once it gained full size I wanted it to. My target for dungeon Lizard is at least a 2 meter long lizard from snout to base of the tail. Plus another one and a half meter for the tail.

To get that size it will take a while since the dungeon lizards need to grow stronger then most of the other animals.

The goblins have also been getting smarter. They can murmur a bit in human language and with that increased intelligence, have started to make primitive stone weapons from the dungeon rocks and animal bones.

Still it’s not getting boring. After Rey left with the brats he was away for some 4 days and during that time where no elves were around, around 4 parties of thieves and bandits from what I can guess are several different criminal organizations. The parties were numbered at around 10 men with a 5 warriors, 1 mage, 1 scout and 3 archers. They vary from one or another but they ended the same. The first floor became a trap on its own. They believed the dungeon was weak since they could cut through the dungeon animals easily. They were lucky as well. They gathered a good number of fangs, claws, scales, even some lizard tails I set to drop on rare cases.

Still in the end when they entered the second floor they felt my real power. Without noticing the bugs would swarm them dropping the poison and then any of the monsters I felt like using would come in. Goblins are left out since they are still weak. The ones on floor one were even weaker though.

For 2 groups I had them swarmed by dungeon lizards, saber cats and devil hounds while the other two were attacked vampire bats, man eater bats and feral rats. I wanted the lizards to grow faster so putting them up against strong foes that have lots of MP would help.

With the MP from the four groups I was able to spread the second floor out to half the planned size and make around 5 new rooms. The current corridors are mostly straight with a total of 15 rooms. My aim was around 30 in a large labyrinth.

On the fourth day Theo returned and with him were a party of several beast men with some short swords, shields, bows or staffs.

Theo: ‘Hey Mavis, this is our first crew of recruits.’

Mavis: ”Beastmen? Where did you find them near here?”

He frowned. Seeing it answered it all. These were ex-slaves.

Theo: ‘These guys are the first kids we were able to remove the slave seals from. I have the formula to remove Milliana’s as well.’

Mavis: ”They are in the goblin village in the second floor. Look out cause I bred some new monsters. Dalson is also slowly altering the large lizards on the second floor to make them grow faster.’

He smiles and nods before ordering the team onwards.

He was the leader but he didn’t fight. Instead he led them giving them orders and having them work on their team work.

When they reached the first wild cat room they were nearly surrounded but I stopped once I saw they would die.

Theo announced they succeeded in reaching their objective but since we didn’t reach the last room they would need to let me get their mana.

I dropped in front of them small crystals and Theo drained their mana into the gems before dropping them on the ground. I then open a portal out and they leave.

The crystals were absorbed again and I gained 300 MP from them.

Novice adventures, so I guess I can’t expect much.

Well for the last week of the month they returned about 3 more times each time reaching the same point and fighting better each time but always stopping there leaving behind ever growing amounts of mana.

I don’t remember how much time passed but I think it’s been nearly 2 months now. Passed rather rather fast because I had so much going on. If I didn’t have my friends here I might have been bored the whole time waiting for goblins and animals to come in slowly. I probably would have moved from here to some place much more interesting at that.

Hm speaking of moving I wonder how much it takes to move from my spot. I remember I didn’t spend anything when I moved back a bit so the entrance would look like a cave opening.

I wonder how dungeons react to each other as well. So many questions and so few answers. I haven’t asked Help in a while but it's not like I would need it unless the situation arises. Still I want to get bigger than all other dungeons. Seems so interesting watching my own little world grow. Its even more interesting seeing humans invade and getting their asses kicked.

Can’t wait until more thieves come in. I get the most power from them since I kill them.
