《Irregular (Rewritten)》Chapter Five

A little over three hours had passed and the party was standing in front of the dungeon ready to finally challenge its inhabitants, they had been informed that the dungeon contained low-level goblins, ranging from level one to three, with a few higher leveled elite goblins. Three stood holding the still somewhat unfamiliar towershield and warhammer he had been loaned by the dwarf. Grimli grunted for the groups attention, “Right, now we be enterin the dungeon ya younguns need to pay attention, I’ll help only if I believe ya life be in danger, if ya get yaself hurt it be ya own damn fault! Lass, take control of ya party.”

Emmi nodded and stepped forward, “We will be going with a rather standard party formation, Three will be in front and our heavy, I will take the right side slightly behind him and move in when necessary, Davis will take the left side doing the same, Talin will prioritize mages and elites, while Sumi will dish out as much damage as she can whenever she can, questions?” Everyone shook their heads and stepped through the cave's entrance, ready to face the goblins inside.

The cave was dark, only sporadically lightened by a torch, the flickering flame created shadows tricking their minds that there were things moving in the dark. Three strained his hearing, trying to connect any unfamiliar sounds to the presence of enemies, the only thing he heard was the slow drip of water dropping down from the stalactites. He raised his shield to cover most of his body on the left side raising his hammer on the other side, poised to strike. He swept his eyes down the cavern as he meticulously made his way forward.

A screech echoed through the cave, two dark green creatures raced out of the shadows, about as tall as Sumi, the things had a pot belly, pointy yellow teeth, nasty beady little eyes and a long hooked nose. Its eyes focused on Three with screech it charged him with its rusty knife, he could nearly feel the others beside him tense. Three looked at the creature and almost chuckled, he pulled back his right foot waited for the creature to come close then upon arrival he put his foot on its chest the creature clutched at his leg, sharp nails finding no purchase on his skill hardened skin, he pushed making the goblin lose its balance then when it smacked into the floor he pressed, a squelch, then a crack was heard as the goblin was squashed underfoot. He swung his hammer and with a single swing crushed the remaining goblins skull, sending its face into the back of its head.

“Holy fish in the sea,” he heard Davis mutter, “That was brutal, I wanna try that.”

The others were stunned by the display, Sumi didn’t seem the least bit fazed. Grimli chuckled, “Well, seems I can head back and wait for ya youngins to return, don’t seem to be anythin that can harm ya in here, but a job be a job so I gon be with ya till tha end!”

Three turned around and signed at Sumi, Sumi translated for everyone, “He says he got awarded the skill Stomp, for doing that.”

The others muttered to themselves until Emmi called for them to move further into the cave. The other fights they got into were as simple as the first, Three held the goblins off with ease and the others dismantled their forces, Sumi and Talin had yet to do anything. They reached a larger cavern, this time there were more than a couple of goblins, two of the goblins were larger and better equipped, the tags above them showing they were a Goblin warrior level four. Another goblin was wearing a something resembling tribal clothes and a staff with feathers and was shouting at the othergoblinss, including the warriors and what the tag showed to be a level four shaman, there were six regular goblins. The shaman raised his staff to and started mumbling a spell when an arrowwhizzedd past Three and slammed into its forehead killing it on impact.

The remaining goblins roared in anger and charged the group, Three stepped forward and roared a challenge of his own, stepping forward to smash into the goblins, drawing the attention of most of the goblins and both of the warriors, an arrow of fire smashed into one of the goblins ignoring Three, smacking its face back as it clawed at its face in agony. The other goblin that ignored him went down with an arrow in his chest. Three swung his hammer in a long ark and crushed the skull of the nearest warrior goblin, Emmi stepped forward with her glowing red sword, yelling slice and decapitated the last remaining warrior. Davis almost seemed to dance between the normal gobs and slammed his axes into two goblins simultaneously. The last two goblins were made short work of, all in all, the fight took barely ten seconds.

Grimli laughed at the display, commenting on how easy the dungeon seemed for them. Three had to agree the dungeon was rather easy, he had expected his other teammates to not be very capable, it seemed they were more capable than he had expected, perhaps he owed them an apology. Each of them was skilled in wielding their weapons in a way that he was not, he simply relied on his size and his defensive skills to crush the enemy. They moved on, running into a smaller group of goblins here and there but they were taken care of with ease. The group started earning some skills, Grimli told them that the first rank of a skill was easily learned in combat, as the system simply awarded them with it if the action was deemed appropriate.

Three had learned Stomp, and Challenging Cry. Talin had earned Aim, Davis had earned Twin Fang which was a skill that allowed him to deal more damage when he hit two targets simultaneously. Emmi learned Leadership which gave a small bonus to the party under her command. Sumi, strangely enough, learned the skill Invigorating Presence. All in all the group grew steadily stronger as they headed deeper into the dungeon, they made their way to a cavern where Grimli told them the boss was holed up, he told them the boss was a goblin chieftain level five with a few subordinates and told them about its skills and mannerisms. They entered the cavern prepared for the battle, only to find something completely different.

Instead of the goblin chieftain they expected, There was a huge pale hulking creature, it had two beady eyes sitting above a jaw much larger than a humans, a barreled chest accompanied with thickly muscled long arms, it gazed at them opening its mouth revealing long fangs, It roared at them in rage for trespassing. The tag above its head revealed it to be a level eleven Ogre.

Emmi recovered from the surprise almost immediately, “Three! Lock it down, Davis and me the sides. Talin, Sumi! The eyes!” The group roared their consent as Talin and Sumi both aimed shots at the Ogres head, the eyes were hard to target because of their size, with a simple tilt of the head the ogre avoided the threat, having little effect other than pissing the thing off. Three stepped forward with his shield and used his Challenging Cry drawing the things attention, Up close the Ogre really was big, at least twelve feet, the slight distraction caused by the monsters' size caused a fist to slam into his shield, severely denting it and sending him flying a couple of meters back. He jumped back, discarding his shield as he roared in anger and charged at the beast. He dropped his hammer as his muscles rippled and grew, black veins pressing against his pale skin as he challenged the creature. The two engaged into an all-out brawl, neither doing much damage to the other because of their defensive capabilities.

Talin and Sumi kept using projectiles whenever they saw the chance, to little effect. Davis couldn’t even get through the thick hide, his strength simply wasn’t high enough. Emmi managed to do small amounts of damage at a time with her Slice, it cost a lot of energy and took her some time to recharge. Three got knocked back again, immediately jumping back up and locking hands with the monster, his hands dwarfed by the ogres, but surprisingly he was could nearly match the monstrous creature in raw power. “Three!” Sumi yelled, “Hold him!” Three grunted his reply. Sumi sprinted up towards Three’s back, she used him as a step up and shoved her hand into the ogres mouth, the ogre roared and bit down, Sumi jumped from his back, her hand removed from her arm a small string still connecting the separated limb.

“Time to feel the flame!” Sumi roared at the creature eyes glinting, “Fire Cone!” The Ogre convulsed, it opened its mouth flames erupting from its throat. Three managed to get his head out of the way just in time, rolling away from the ogre, only a few hairs getting singed.

The ogre collapsed to its knees grasping at its own stomach and throat. “FIRE CONE!” Sumi yelled again, more fire came from the creature's mouth, it collapsed to the ground. “FIRE CONE!” Sumi yelled once more, this time the monster simply shivered once and stopped moving. The whole team stared at Sumi, Three included. “What did you DO?!” Emmi asked her, “You didn’t need to sacrifice a hand in our first dungeon!”

Sumi looked at Emmi and grinned, “I didn’t lose my hand, look!” She pointed to the string coming out of her arm with her other hand, she gave it a pull and it started to twist, coiling back around her arm, the ogres mouth was forced open and her hand was dragged back to her body, it dragged across the floor, followed by everyone's gaze, when at the end it hopped and reattached itself to her arm. She grinned at their looks, “Convenient isn’t it, after speaking with mr dwarf boss and pointy hat shaggy beard, they convinced me that my body was special and I should be proud of it, so I figured I’d use it to my advantage!”

“Look!” she added, dropping her hand further down by the string keeping it taught until her hand almost touched the floor even though she was standing upright, she then started twirling her hand around in large circles as if she was swinging a bucket of water. “Cool isn’t it! I just figured out I can detach body parts, as long as I keep it attached by string it's no problem aaaaaand for tonights special.” She said returning her hand to her body, she grabbed both sides of her head and pulled it off her shoulders “Tadaaa, now don't go losing your heads over this!” she chuckled at herself. Three heard a gasp and some muttering from the others, he simply stared as Sumi stuck her head back on then removed her head from her body again. When she spoke it was even more surreal. “Pretty cool if I do say so myself!” She said laughing.

Three shook his head, this was definitely a large change from how she looked earlier. He was thankful for those that convinced her that it was nothing to be ashamed about. The group simply stared, he heard Emmi muttering things like impossible and I can’t do that, can I? After giving her own head a quick tug she confirmed that yes, her head was still stuck firmly to her body, the rest was doing similar things. Three sighed and headed to the Ogre wondering what kind of loot it had dropped.

While the rest of the team was still getting over their shock, Three was taking a look at the loot, he touched the dead ogre, the body disappearing into a smattering of lights. The items it dropped where a [Thick hide of the Ogre] and a [Vial of Ogre Essence]. He walked back to the group and told them about the drops, he had Sumi ask them what the vial did. They told him that if an essence was dropped, it would give the one drinking it five levels in one of the monsters main traits. For the Ogre that would probably either be thick skin or ogres strength, they shortly debated who should get the essence. The choice ended being either Three or Emmi, Three gave the vial to Emmi, the ogre’s strength might be useful for him but the thick skin would be less effective than his own iron skin should that be what the vial gifted. Emmi asked him if he was sure he wanted to give it to her as essences were fairly rare drops, he simply nodded.

The group held their breath as she put the vial to her lips and drank it. A soft red glow went over her body as she tightened her muscles grimacing, they could see her muscles becoming more defined. She flexed her muscles then picked up her greatsword, this time with only one hand.

“Wow this is great! Here let me show you what it does.”

She handed them the status plate hanging around her neck.

Emmi tapped on Ogres Strength with her finger, to access the skills information.

{Skill : Ogres Strength : Skill level 5 }

{This skill increases strength by 1% per skill level,

{reduces weight of weapons by 1/kg per skill level up to a maximum weight reduction of 50%

{Increases passively, increased growth rate during combat.}

“The strength increase will take a while to show itself, right now its barely a one stat point in strength, but the weight reduction on weapons makes a real difference! Especially on lower levels, my great sword weighs about eleven kilograms so its weight is already almost reduced by half” She said smiling proudly.

Grimli smiled, “Ogre’s strength be a good skill to have early on lassie, ya seem to be a lucky sort, now we should be headin back to tha village, get those statuses reset so you can become stronger!”

The rest cheered their agreement, discussing how much experience they thought they gained and what they would spend it on. Three was confused about the ordeal so he asked them to explain it, as it turned out every time you went into a dungeon or killed a monster experience was gained, but to be upgraded to the next level one needed to come back to one of the four major guilds. The adventurers guild for instance, had a World Core that was connected to the world's energy, they needed to touch the world core and it would grant them the energy needed to increase their strength. There were a few natural places where this could be done as well, Grimli told them. Places that were naturally dense would allow you to level up, vials did not need to be used near world energy-rich places because the vial itself already contained it, meaning they could simply be used on the spot.

Three was not that well informed about the system so he kept asking questions, some of the things he found out were important, especially for later development. If he wanted to use the rank up on the skills he received at level ten, he would only be able to use it on the three highest ranking skills in his possession, Grimli asked for a look at his status plate so Three handed it to him.

Grimli blinked at his skill levels, Three himself was curious about his stats but that would have to wait until they reached the village. “I would advise usin the rank ups on any of the three skills you have right now, all of them be extremely rare to have as highest skill. If they still be highest level for your second rank up use it on one of the others, ye can’t be usin it on the same one a second time, unfortunately.” Grimly said stroking his beard.

Emmi, Davis and Talin walked over to take a peek. Davis muttered a curse, and the others stared blankly at his status plate, “What the bloodyfishentrails happened to you for you to have those skills at that level!” Davis asked in outrage.

Three grunted and scratched his chin, “not me, us” he said pointing to Sumi and back at himself. Sumi grimaced as the questions were obviously going to be directed at her. She sighed and told them the story, She told them how they woke up in the cages the mages had set-up, and how they had tortured herself and Three daily. How when they had reached a certain point a core of some sort was forced into their bodies changing them from the humans they originally were. The eyes from the others went wide as she told the story, Three saw Grimli almost shimmering with rage, he saw the air slightly distort around the dwarf. Emmi had tears in her eyes and was hugging Sumi as hard as she can, Davis was clutching his axes and muttering a string of curses that would make any sailor blink. Talin listened silently but was running his hand over his bow, eyes sharp.

Then Sumi explained Three’s actions the day before, how they had been tasked with finding allies that they could grow strong with, so they would no longer be at risk from the group of mages. The group suddenly nodded in understanding, they also understood how his loss of memory made him ignorant of many things. Grimli suddenly spoke up with a voice that sounded like gravel, “Lassie, I will share this story with those I am connected to.” The dwarf said with a glimmer of rage in his eyes, his rage near palpable as the air shimmered around him, making the rest nervous and taking a step back from the dwarf. Even Three who was near fearless and thought his body could take almost any punishment felt intimidated by the sheer bloodlust the dwarf was exuding.

“This group of so called mages will be hunted until there is nothing left, rest assured we will not inform the authorities as I am sure your friend was right, there is a good chance the mages have some pull in the government. Adventurers like myself, however, do not have such oversight or limitations. I know a few parties that would love to get their hands on those who would do such things to children.”

Three stared at the dwarf wondering why his weird way of speaking had suddenly evened out. He didn’t really understand what the dwarf had said but he heard the difference in accent and he could base his guess on the reaction of the others and the few words he did understand. He felt it would be good to have groups hunting the mages, if they were as strong as Grimli then there was a good chance they would be a serious threat to them.

The rest of the journey back was made in silent contemplation, the other groups had not yet returned from the dungeon but they had decided to make their way back first, Grimli had left a message with those still guarding the camp site informing them of their departure. As they walked towards the village the group was contemplating the story Sumi had told them and how they could best spend the stat points they had earned. Three was also wondering how he should spend his stat points, three stat points could be gained per level, he wondered what level clearing the dungeon and killing the boss had brought them to.

It took some time to get back to the village, which he only now figured out was called Grathem. They made their way to the adventurers guild, Maia was working again today and greeted them enthusiastically, she seemed to be well known with the rest of his group and Grimli in particular. They told her the story of the dungeon and how they had beaten an ogre and how they were especially excited to get their new status checked. The rest went first, Three wanted Sumi to go before him but she denied with a grin and pushed him forward to the core.

He shrugged and put his hand on the core, he gasped as the energy coursed through his veins, he felt, Alive. He could see clearly for a moment, feel the subtle differences in the air, he could smell more things than he ever could before, colors deepened into shades unseen. Then all at once it disappeared. He released a breath he didn’t know he had been holding, the others were grinning at him, knowing exactly what the experience felt like.

He took a moment to calm himself before he looked at his status plate.

He looked over his stats and nodded, the others took a look at his stats and muttered about stats being too high and Emmi was muttering that he would make an exceptionally competent punching bag. Sumi was the next to step forward and put her hand on the core, she gasped slightly as well as an array of colors flashed over her skin almost lighting up the room, she turned into a human hyper active rainbow as she stood there holding the core. The rest stared at awe as the girl illuminated the room in an array of never before seen colours, the thickness of the colours was near palpable. People released the breath they had been holding as the moment ended, they asked to see Sumi’s plate but she shook her head. “It’s a girls secret, no one is gonna see my plates!”

The rest grumbled about unfairness and how they had shown theirs but she simply shook her head and winked. Three wondered how he should spend his points, before he could decide Sumi poked him. “We really need to get out of these rags, we stole them from the mansion but we can't wear them forever, and they stink! And they’re UGLY!”

Three nodded as he looked at the dirty and slightly blood spattered clothes he was wearing, Emmi spoke up. “You guys probably don’t have any money, but my mom has her own clothing store so you can come with me and we will get you some really nice clothes! Also I heard you met my dad, Captain Tulo! You have nowhere to sleep and we have spare rooms.” Emmi said wrapping an arm around Sumi, “I always wanted a sister!” She said dragging Sumi into the village, followed by an arguing Talin and Davis and a Three who politely bowed a goodbye to Maia and Grimli.

Emmi dragged them to the edge of the village, pointing them to her house, a quaint looking two story building. Davis and Talin gave them a wave and headed to their own home which was close by, the two of them lived together, they used to be orphans but once they reached the age of sixteen they moved out of the orphanage and earned money together so they could buy their own place. Which they now proudly owned and maintained. There were a surprising amount of orphans for such a small village, a lot of the adults had dangerous jobs, it was not on rare occasion that woodcutters or hunters would be attacked by monsters from the forest and lose their lives. Quite a few also joined one of the guilds as adventurers, there was enough to do around the village that they could spend their lives here doing an adventurers job, there were also a number of dungeons here that they would frequent both for training and for resources. The village took good care of orphans however, the community was rather small but they were tight-knit.

Davis’s parents and Talin’s mother had been in an adventurers group together, the two of them had grown up with each other and they had practiced their fighting skills from a young age. Their parents had died when one of the dungeons had changed, the dungeons would grow every so often due to rich world energy. When they did they would grow larger and more dangerous, creatures that had not inhabited the dungeons before would move in. The same had happened to the dungeon they had visited, the goblin chieftain that used to be the main boss had been replaced by a much more dangerous ogre. This was also the reason why the guilds sent guidance along with young adventurers for their first dive.

The concept of what a mother should have been, it bothered Three. He heard from Talin about his mother, how she had taught him the bow, proudly showing of her skills and archery and teaching him everything she could about it. Mothers were supposed to take care of their children, a selfless perhaps unrequited love. It was difficult for him to imagine that a person was capable of such a love, he compared that to what he now understood was his own mother. The hag. He clenched his fists at the memory, he would make sure to be a better parent should he ever get the chance to be so, now that he thought about it… How did one go about having children.

“This is it!” Emmi said as she walked inside the house, there was a tailor shop connected to their house that served as her mothers work space. She pushed the two inside and introduced them to her mother. “This is my mom! Mom this is Sumi and the big guy is Three, they are the new party members I told you about!” Emmi said standing next to the two as if she was showing off her most prized possession.

Emmi’s mother was somewhat similar to Emmi herself, they had the same dark hair, although her mother's hair was loosely drawn over her shoulder. Unlike Emmi’s facial structure with its sharper angles, her mothers face was all soft lines and curves, giving her a soft and gentle face. “Oh my, the two of you are lovely, a pleasure to meet you.” The woman said gracefully nodding to the two, giving them soft smile.

“A pleasure!” Sumi said, waving at her. Three nodded in agreemant.

“It would seem the two of you need some new clothes, it just wont do having a girl as cute as yourself in those shabby clothes, also need to find something strapping for the young lad, come in come in.” She said, waving them inside as she ran her eyes over both their bodies. “Well get yourselves cleaned up first, Emmi dear, fill the bathtub, your father confiscated plenty of water stones from smugglers some time ago, he shared them with his guards but we have more than enough!” She tapped her chin in thought, “I think an hour orso is more than enough for me to make suitable clothes for both of them, quite a project, quite a project!” She said with a glint in her eye as she was running her hand over different fabrics.

“Kay mom!” Emmi said pushin the two through the door that connected the tailor to their house. “Come we have an extended room for the bathtub” Emmi proudly told them how her father had dug a two by two meter hole about a meter deep into the ground and had covered the walls with planks, having a friend of his use some of his nature magic to meld the planks together and making them water proof, making the wood smooth and comfortable. She grabbed a waterstone putting it a bronze holder of a sort, the bronze started glowing softly as watter started flowing into the bath.

“You can put your clothes in the basket, soap is right there. So how…” She stared blankly at the two of them as they took of their clothes, Sumi tossed her tunic at the basket wearing nothing beneath it, Three neatly folded his tunic, attempting to copy the way he had seen the clothes folded in the shop. Sumi started pulling of her pants, as Three started doing the same Emmi started sputtering, “What, Wait?! What are you doing?!” She yelled at the two staring at them wide eyed, cheeks glowing as she pointedly stared right between the two. Three looked at Sumi and raised his eyebrows, “Clothes, basket,” He said pointing as he took his pants off. Sumi tossed her pants at the basket carefully dipping her toe in bath. “Your the one who told us to do that!” Sumi said, preoccupied by the fact that the bath water was warm sighing in content.

“But you’re naked! We should go in turns!” She said now really focusing on the ceiling as Three walked past her, putting his neatly folded clothes into the basket, he picked up Sumi’s clothes and started neatly folding them as well.

“Why turns? Room, us fit.” Three said looking at her with an arched eyebrow, Emmi turned her gaze to him making sure to look him into the eyes. Her eyes wandered down slightly and she flushed as noticed his sculpted musculature. “But this i-i-is indecent!” Emmi mumbled.

Three looked at Sumi and signed, [whats wrong with her, she’s acting weird.]

“Yea Emmi stop acting weird and join me in the bath, the water is greablublbubl.” Sumi told her as she let herself sink below the surface, Three stepped into the bath behind her and sighed in relief as the warm water flowed around his body. Emmi stared at Sumi, burying her face in her hands, but taking a peek anyways. She stared at Sumi’s chest than back at her own, 'I think mine are a little bigger? But hers are so perky!' She caught her self thinking about it and felt her face glow. She took a deep breath and removed her clothes, she carefully stepped towards the bath keeping a close eye on Three, who by the way wasn’t paying the least bit of attention, his eyes were closed and he was breathing softly. His chest rose and fall she watched a drop of water drip from his chin and onto his chest, she watched it trail past his muscular chest, over his ribs and too... She turned red and quickly looked somewhere else.

She sank into the bath herself, stifling a sigh of relief. She gathered her courage and asked, “How are the both of you so okay with being naked around each other.”

Sumi opened an eye and glanced at her, “Why shouldn’t we be, we spent most of the time trapped with each other naked, eventually our clothes had gotten so dirty they stripped us of them, they never bothered giving us different ones, so we stole some when we broke out. Emmi blinked then frowned, she tried to relax in bath and to her surprise slowly started getting used to it. When her mother called however and Three got out of the bath tub she still blushed and hurriedly looked the other way. Three unbothered by both his naked body, or the fact that he was still wet walked right through the door and headed to her mother. Emmi was still in shock, she heard from the next room something drop, “Oh my,” She heard her mother say, Emmi was surprised to find that she could blush even more, as she buried her head in her hands.

Once she had calmed down enough she left the tub, after she had dried herself of and hurried upstairs to put on some clothes she headed to her moms shop. When she opened the door she was greeted, thankfully, by two fully clothed party members. Her mom had made a sleeveless black vest, with a crimson red undershirt for Three, he had loose black pants that he tied around his ankles with a strip of white cloth, his belt was also a crimson red piece of cloth, more of a sash than a belt really. The colors mixed really well with his void black hair and eyes. She noticed he wasn’t wearing any shoes.

Sumi on the other hand was more colorful, She wore a vest like Three, also without sleeves, but hers was brown, with some red and green patterns on it, instead of a proper shirt she had white chest wraps, her stomach was left bare, she wore loose shorts, which she had tied below her knees. She was wearing a leather headband that fit just above her ears, with colored beads on a few strings on the right side, with a few hawk feathers tucked behind the band just above her ear.

“Don’t they look great!” Her mother said putting her hands on her hips and admiring her work. Emmi had to admit that the clothes fit both their personalities and appearance well. Her mother had always been good at color coördinating outfits. “They both prefer not wearing shoes though, but even that fits the look!”

“Well now we put some clothes on your back go out and show them the village! I’ll make dinner, your dad will be back in a couple hours, so go ahead and have some fun till then!” Her mother told them, practically pushing them out the door.
