《The God in the Grove》Book 2 Chapter 34: The Silver Shard

Book 2 Chapter 34
One night later, Tirr stood pressed against the wall as he peeked around the corner at the large, secluded warehouse some distance away. Maria huddled behind him as they both hid, waiting for the signal from their companions. True to his word, Torvus had brought them to the Assassin’s Guild’s main base within Lutel, an old warehouse district, used to store long-lasting trade goods until they were ready to ship.
The warehouse’s stood at the outskirts of the Capital just before the lands of the more inland villages and towns. It sat behind a barbed fence on a hill overlooking the area around itself. Multiple long buildings clumped together, filled with lumber and other commodities.
Towers that may seem out of place in the civilian warehouse marked the perimeter, their purpose becoming obvious when you knew who the true owners were. Small pockets of light from hanging lamps acted as the only source of light.
A lone group seemed to patrol around the building slowly working their way while they chatted happily, acting as if it was just another night’s work. But Tirr knew that the regular workers had left earlier that day, having been forced to stake out the location until nightfall, and the only people here were the agents of the Confederation.
He also knew that while the patrol seemed to be the only people here, Others hid in the dark around the complex, keeping a watchful eye. The well-placed lamps and patrol acted as a distraction, meant to draw attention towards themselves and away from those that watched from the shadows.
Tirr ducked behind the wall as the patrol came toward the nearby area of the outer fence. “They should have signaled by now…” He whispered towards Maria, feeling not a small amount of irritation at having to go through all of this sneaking around.

“Nerida won’t let Torvus fool around,” Maria replied soothingly.
Tirr replied with a grunt as he let the patrol go past for what seemed like the dozenth time. He understood the reasons why the needed to be careful. A hostage situation was quite different from an open battlefield. He doubted Agir would be happy to stop the war if they returned with a corpse and stories of mystical assassins.
Even then, he would have preferred a more straightforward approach, but after listening to Torvus talk about the shard he and the other assassins used he knew it was no use…
The conversation had been started by Nerida, at the safe house the night before. “If we’re going to be working together…” She had started spitefully, “Don’t you think it’d be a good idea to tell us about the Shard you and your friends use?”
“Never were friends… What do you think it is?” Torvus had replied mischievously.
She stared at him quietly before turning her attention to Tirr, flashing him a smile as she asked if she should cook something. The lack of response made Torvus pout with disappointment
“Okay, okay. I’ll talk, no need to give me the silent treatment.” Torvus muttered to himself. “When you were fighting them, there should have been a few things you noticed right?”
“It was almost impossible to catch them, they moved faster than I could track, and sometimes they seemed to appear from nowhere”
Tirr nodded as he agreed, some of their movement seemed familiar but once more the memories evaded him like mist escaping through his hands.
“That’s all a part of the shard, except they didn’t come from nowhere, they just moved when you couldn’t sense them.”
“How?” Nerida cut in.
“Time…” Torvus replied lazily as he sat back. “The Time shard allows a person a limited control of time itself.”

“There’s no way that’s true… How could you fight that?
“You already have,” Torvus said smiling, “Like I said, it's limited. For scrubs, like we fought tonight, there’s only two real ways for them to even use it without killing themselves.”
He held up a finger as he counted, “First of all they can accelerate their own time. You can think of it as speeding up their body and mind letting them move and react at inhuman speeds. That’s why it felt so hard to keep up with them. However, it's tiring so they can’t keep it up for long. In a battle of endurance, you guys win for sure”
“And the second one?” Tirr asked curiously.
“They can stop time…”
“Stop time!?” The water priestess exclaimed, “Couldn’t they have just done that and killed us then?”
“Doesn’t work like that…” Torvus replied shaking his head. “It takes a huge amount of energy just to stop it in the first place. Many people die on the first attempt as the shard swallows them. I would bet that most of these guys can’t hold it for even a second.”
"Even then that would be long enough right?” Maria questioned.
“When you stop time you and anything directly touching you first stop it can move normally. Everything else though can’t be interacted with” My knife can go through an apple no problem normally right? But if I stopped time, it would be harder than diamond, wouldn’t be able to put a scratch on it.”
“So, you can’t kill someone during the stop?”
No, the best way to use it is either to help your evasion defensively or prepare your approach offensively. You can attack, stop time, and resume just as you’re about to kill them. It takes a good amount of control though. Too late and your attack bounces off uselessly, too early and they have time to react.”
And the other ways you can use it?” Tirr asked staring at Torvus as he remembered the assassin’s implication…
The young man smiled in response, “Well I can not only speed up and stop time for myself, but also slows down or stop time for someone else.” He winked at Tirr, reminding him of the fight in Rasor, ‘Members on my level are rare though and should be guarding the council…”
“Tirr!” A hurried whisper roused him from his thoughts. He looked up just in time to see one of the lamps briefly flash in the distance, signaling their own start to the attack.
“Good,” Tirr said relieved, “Let’s go…”

Shift (Ben 10+DCU Fanfiction)
Omnitrix+ DCU, what's not to like? The main character will not be Ben Tennyson, rather someone from our world who gains the Omnitrix Hello! This fanfiction Shift is what I wanted to do for an homage to what I thought were underrated pieces of media, Ben 10 and some DCU characters. However, I would be remiss if I didn’t add context to two of the major works that inspired Shift, Dial, and A Practical Guide to Evil. Dial is another ben 10 fanfiction, however that story takes place in the MCU, and with an adult that is already a grown-up at the beginning of the story. Dial, by my own accounts, is more superficially Like shift, even though the Omnitrix is a central device in both. My protagonist starts out around 18 years old, so is less serious and can build relationships with some of the junior justice league members, and then later on in the story meet the Justice League officially. The tone will be more light-hearted at the beginning of the story as teenagers are known to use sarcasm and jokes at each other’s expense. Furthermore, in Dial, the protagonist has a well-developed knowledge of the MCU which he uses to have knowledge on events and characters, that the character in Shift will not have. While the MC will have some knowledge of people's abilities, lesser-known characters and people's real identities will be not included as much, but the MC of Shift will have some knowledge. APGTE's influence is deeper than Dials'. The epigraphs at the beginning of every chapter are an example of that, a place for light-hearted jokes and worldbuilding that's not pure exposition, but I also want to incorporate narrative stories to Shift (heroes win more than lose, providence, etc) on a lighthearted scale. While the heroes of Shift will have to work to win against villains, the MC of Shift will be allowed limited precognition, through narratives tropes and archetypes as a trade-off of less knowledge of the DCU. For example, a villain a hero faces might monologue, but the MC will not instinctively know how to counter every villain they encounter. I also wanted to bring in more realism than usual superhero stories, ie: the MC cannot just walk and have a meeting with Batman or Superman, he would have to “work his way up” in terms of credibility and whatnot. The Aliens that show up in Shift I tried to make different than the ones in Dial, just to share the love for lesser-known characters. And to make it fairer for the villains of the DCU, the main character will not wantonly use if gain at all an Alien X or a ben 10 form of Kryptonians, just so the characters have to work a little bit for victory. I urge anyone reading to consider checking out both APGTE and Dial as they are both amazing works, and I hope you enjoy them. The beginning of how the MC enters the DCU will not be as important as him actually existing in that universe, so that is why a ton of time is not spent on that part of the story. Chapters will be around 2.5 thousand words and come out around every weekday.

Binary of Life and Death
Monsters, gold, chaos, glory, adventure, what more could attract two of the greatest players of all time to Sugarea, the most popular MMORPG of its time. But everyone makes errors, and unfortunate for these two brilliant players, they have made the grave mistake of not actually sleeping like normal humans and missed out on the very moment the new Dark Legion update would take effect. Or did they? They wake in what seems familiar yet not, but they soon realize their predicament. They are inside their game avatar's bodies! A half-Demon and a Dragonoid are now struggling with more than just power, these two men have to find their new purpose and calling in a completely different world. Will they concur it like ordinary land or will they enlighten the planet into equality? Do figures pull strings in the dark or is everything open to the public eye? Nothing is certain except the unknown, and nothing is ever as it seems... This is an Isekai story, as such, some parts may sound either cliché or similar to others, but I assure you, I tried to prevent that. To make it known, I took quite a lot of inspiration from the light novel/anime Overlord, but that doesn't mean it's a direct rip-off of it. You'll find there to be quite the amount of differences. Just a little heads up as well, you should expect irregular uploads, as it takes me a long time to write each chapter. I am currently trying for once every other week on Sundays around 10:00 A.M. Chapters are usually 7k words and up, with the longest (chapter 3) being 10.3k words. So, if you like to sit down and read a long chapter every two weeks at 10:00 A.M. EST on Sundays, then you can waste your time here! Small disclaimer: Profanity is far and few between, and mostly used by side characters, rarely the main character. When something with gore happens, I describe to the best of my ability, which will only get better the longer I write this... :) Small cuts between perspectives happen, and can hide what some characters do, which will be revealed in future chapters, I'm not that lazy... all the time... There are some parts that are long blocks of text, most, if not all, of them, are characters talking, but I try not to info dump. I know one of the tags says "Psychological", and for the most part, it is, but it's not as prominent as other stories, instead, it's more hidden and scattered, but I did try to make the pieces I did reveal all fit together. Cover art is bound to be changed when I have a good picture to use, so the Yin-Yang is a placeholder for now unless yall wanna gimme something to use *wink wink nudge nudge*. So yeah, please give it a try, as I have nothing better to do with my life, and I am banking solely off of a career in literature and am hoping that I can create a story that can actually be called something more than a child's imagination running wild. The eventual and inevitable end to the story won't be for a long while, at least till chapter 40 or so. I have thought long and hard about the message and themes at play, so I hope you, the reader (who has some amazing hair btw), can enjoy and partake on this adventure with me into my dark empty pit of an imagination.
