Chapter 42

*Slow.*

*Slow.*

*Slow.*

*This rifle is so slow!*

BOOOOOM!

BOOOOOM!

I pulled the clip out and sat up in the back of the wagon. As I began to reload both of my clips I watched Bram and Carmilla toss goblins across the battlefield. The goblins are so weak that I feel like this rifle is overkill, but it takes too long. Picking them off one at a time like this is way too tedious.

Becket:"Alright! Lets do it!"

I shoved the clip back into the rifle and shoved the spare clip into my boot. I jumped up and leaned the rifle against my shoulder as I glanced over the goblin army.

Becket:"Looks like one of them escaped."

A lone goblin sat on top of a small hill watching the battle. He must've decided to run instead of facing Carmilla and Bram. Smart goblin. I tossed my pack on and quickly made my way over to him then stopped right as he turned around. Our eyes locked.

Becket:"Where are you going?"

He was an ugly little thing. Bald, green, large nose but surprisingly muscular. He had a short sword and wore some kind of leather.

Becket:"Sorry, can't let any of you get away."

It jumped at me swinging its sword.

Goblin Joe:"Die!"

He was so slow that I had plenty of time to decide how I'd kill it. I reached out my wyvern arm and caught him by the throat. He seemed to lose all his strength and just dangled there. The sword fell to the ground the moment he collided with my hand. When I tightened my grip on his windpipe he finally began to struggle.

Becket:"Goblin bones are thicker then I thought."

SNAP!!!

I broke his neck and he fell limp while his eyes rolled back. No other goblins tried to run yet so I casually walked down the hill toward the chaos. I left goblin Joe where I killed him. Currently I was standing near the rear of the army so only a few goblins turned around and noticed me. I swiftly killed each of them.

Becket:"Lets see how many this will kill."

I got down on one knee and pointed toward the goblin army.

BOOOOOM!

The bullet tore through one goblin and continued forward shredding any other in its path.

Becket:"This is much better."

I smiled. From my spot in the wagon I was wasting bullets. They would pass through my target then hit the ground. Now that I was level with the army I could kill many more with a single shot. Because of this I was noticed, but that was fine. Any goblin that got close to me had its head removed.

The goblins thought the time I took to reload my two clips was an opening. Sadly for them it wasn't. After a while I got restless and stood up. The goblins around me jumped back. I took off my pack and put the rifle into it then threw it back over my shoulder.

Becket:"There are a lot of you goblins."

Flames sprayed out of my hand and engulfed the goblins near me. Goblin screams sounded kind of like a pig squealing. This fight was taking too long so I spread my wings and shot up into the air.

Becket:"Killing goblins is so tedious."

I pointed both of my hands toward the army. A storm of fire and ice covered the back of the goblin army. It killed half of what was left, but I felt seriously drained.

Becket:"Ha....That was exhausting."

I landed and retracted my wings. The ground was completely destroyed. I started a slow run toward the rest of the army then suddenly zoomed forward. My sword separated from its sheath and was covered in blood within a second. I hacked my way through the army carving a path straight across.

At this point only a few small groups of goblins were left. Carmilla and Bram were already beginning to work on those groups so I took a seat on a large rock. An intense headache suddenly hit me.

Becket:"Shit! What the hell?"

I gripped both sides of my head until the headache vanished. My eyes were shut while I endured the pain and an image floated into my mind. It was a house built in a tree. I immediately recognized where it was located. This was the same forest I was in during my dream about the little elf girl.

Bram:"Becket."

I opened my eyes and the pain was gone. Bram and Carmilla were standing in front of me. There wasn't a spot of blood on Bram, but Carmilla yet again was covered in it. I stood up quickly and walked toward the wagon.

Becket:"Lets go."

The goblins were all dead so I wanted to quickly leave. The headache put me in a bad mood, but I calmed down and turned back towards Bram.

Becket:"Did you get the goblin kings head?"

The thought didn't cross my mind at first because of my disorientation from that headache, but we still needed the proof of this missions completion.

Bram:"Actually I'm not sure who the goblin king was."

Becket:"I was told he should be the only hobgoblin."

Bram blinked a few times before speaking again.

Bram:"I'm not sure what a hobgoblin looks like. We don't have goblins in our kingdom."

I nodded.

Becket:"I'll find him. You prepare the wagon and make sure Carmilla gets cleaned up."

I set off into the goblin army looking for the king. It wouldn't be hard to find him as long as he wasn't turned into a puddle. I looked for him while I killed goblins so I was sure I hadn't run into him. The king will be the only one with hair. The search took half as long as the actual fight which took about two hours. Considering we fought an army that was great time. Of course I had the highest body count from that fire and ice storm.

My mind drifted to that house I saw along with that little elf girl. For some reason it made my head hurt so I pushed it to the back of my mind. The goblin king was split in two from a cut across his chest starting at his left shoulder and ending at his right hip. I severed the head and went back to the wagon. Once again I was amazed at the speed Carmilla was able to perfectly clean all that blood off of herself. She must have a lot of practice doing it.

Becket:"Here's the goblin kings head."

I tossed it into the back of the wagon. Most of the blood left in the head spilled out on my way here so only a small pool formed under where it landed.

Bram:"It almost looks human."

Bram was looking over the head with interest. Carmilla had returned to the staring contest with her doll.

Becket:"Alright, lets get going."

Bram put the goblin kings head into a brown sack and hung it on the back of the wagon before taking his seat up front with the reigns in hand. I had used a lot of magic so I was considerably tired. Creating fire and ice cost little inner mana, but manipulating it only required concentration. Since there wasn't any around during the fight I had to create it in large amounts.

Becket:"I'm gonna close my eyes for a little while."

Bram gave me a nod and I closed my eyes. I didn't sleep well since that house and little elf girl kept appearing in my dreams. I also saw the village that house was built in. All of the houses were built in trees. Eventually I woke up with a headache. Sleeping wasn't doing any good so I decided on something else to do.

I pulled off the leather strap I used as a belt then took out a needle and thread from my pack along with several small pouches. These I had already made on the trip here. Now it was time to attach them to my belt. What I was making could be called a utility belt. On missions I use to wear a utility belt in my old world, but I already had pockets on every article of clothing so it was mostly used to hold spare items.

Getting things out of the pack each time I needed something was getting annoying. A utility belt from this point on will become apart of my outfit. Each pouch was made out of monster hide so it could stand being treated roughly. It was a little more difficult to find good enough thread so I ended up spending more than I want to, but it didn't really matter since the palace has been paying me a knights salary. It's not a lot of money; however, they also provide everything for me so I have few expenses.

When we stopped for the night I had already finished the belt. We ate then went to sleep. After a few hours of tossing and turning without falling asleep, I got up. Bram was still awake so I decided to chat for a little while.

Becket:"Enjoying the night air?"

He was gazing up at the stars so I sat next to him.

Bram:"I was just thinking......."

I looked up at the stars with him.

Becket:"Tell me a little about yourself."

Bram looked over at me for a second before turning his gaze back towards the stars.

Bram:"Well I grew up in the city Ardeal. Including Carmilla I have three sisters and one brother. Along with my mother and father we made up Ardeals royal family."

He sighed before continuing his story.

Bram:"Ardeal is located on the continent Aldley which is the only continent with two kingdoms ruling it. The city Köln is home of the werewolves our hated enemy. We've been at war with them for centuries."

I interrupted his story to ask a question.

Becket:"I've got a question. What's the difference between a werewolf and a wolf beastman?"

Bram:"A werewolf looks human until they transform into wolfmen then they take on a more beast like appearance, but maintain their intelligence. Some beastmen do look similar to a transformed werewolf; however, they have very low intelligence."

Becket:"So their transformation and intelligence sets them apart."

Bram nodded.

Bram:"A low level werewolf is generally more powerful then a low level vampire, but as you go up in level the vampires begin to overtake the werewolves in all aspects. Of course on a full moon werewolves get a massive increase in power so those nights we usually spend on the defensive."

Bram looked over toward the wagon were Carmilla was sleeping.

Bram:"It was one of those nights that Radu used as a distraction to try killing my sister. Werewolves like to eat the hearts of their enemy so he tore hers out to make it look like a werewolf did it. Luckily I found her before it was too late."

Bram looked into my eyes.

Bram:"Again, thank you for saving her."

I remained silent and just accepted his thanks.

Bram:"I'm gonna get some sleep now."

Bram stood up and walked over to the wagon. He pulled out a few blankets then laid down next to it. I decided not to comment on the fact that he was trying to sleep as close as he could to his sister. It was another hour before I finally fell asleep. There were no strange dreams this time so I slept comfortably.

We final made it back to the city. I half expected a parade or something since I am considered a hero now. Apparently the title didn't mean as much as I hoped. I was given a new red wrist band from the adventurers guild for my title stone and I passed over the goblin kings head.

It wasn't like no one cared. The adventurers seemed excited and so did the lady at the counter giving me the new wrist band, but no one approached our group. It was probably because of the two vampires. After that we stopped by the inn. I was surprised to find Arnie there with Gene.

Becket:"What are you doing here Arnie?"

The vampires didn't care and just headed off to their room.

Arnie:"I came by to talk with Gene. We've become good friends since that day you brought me here."

I looked over at Gene. He looked.....different. My first thought was that he had been working out.

Becket:"Well friends are always nice to have."

Arnie closed his eyes then nodded.

Arnie:"This was fun, but I must be leaving now."

Arnie quickly left. It felt suspicious like he was trying to escape.

Becket:"So how are things going with you?"

He smiled joyfully.

Gene:"Great!"

The door behind him swung open and a girl walked out holding several sheets.

Alexa:"A guest?"

*It's her!*

I tensed up when our eyes met.

Gene:"No just a friend, but two guests did return with him."

She looked at me for a few seconds before turning towards the stairs.

Alexa:"One of the other guests checked out this morning so I've got to change the sheets in their room."

She disappeared up the stairs.

Gene:"That's Alexa."

He was smiling while looking toward the staircase.

Gene:"She's been spending the nights here so she started helping out."

Becket:"That's great. I've got some things I need to do so I'll see you later."

I left as fast as I could trying to be gone before she came back down. I literally dashed towards the palace trying to escape the awkward situation. Once inside my first stop was the smithy. During the goblin subjugation my sword was chipped pretty badly. Like usual the room was quite hot.

Felicity:"Oh, Becket!"

Felicity came up to me smiling. She wasn't sweating very much even in this heat.

Becket:"My sword was damaged so I need repairs."

I passed it over to her and she began to examine it.

Felicity:"I'll pass it on to Bard. He's the one that does the metal work here. How about I enchant it for you?"

Becket:"What kind of enchantment."

Felicity:"Just a basic one like durability. Should make it harder to damage the blade."

Becket:"Sounds good. I'll take it."

Felicity:"I'll deliver it to you when it's finished."

I accepted then left. Now I had to conclude the last of my business by visiting the queen.
