Chapter 9

I was overcome with curiosity so I had to know what exactly my blessing did. I stood up and looked over at Aria. She didn't wake up from me leaving the bed which was good since I didn't want her to see what I was about to do. I stretched my hand out towards her and picked up one of her stray hairs which I then popped into my mouth. I swallowed it and waited.

Becket:"Nothing seems to be happ........Aaaaaahhhhhh!"

I screamed out in pain as a bone breaking feeling ran up my back.

Becket:"Aaaaaahhhhhh!"

I slammed against the wall then into the door which broke off it's hinges. I fell down the stairs still screaming.

Gene:"What happened!"

Gene ran up to me, but I didn't realize since I was blinded by the pain. I started clawing at my chest and tour off my shirt.

Aria:"Becket!!"

Aria flew down the stairs and hovered a few feet above me.

Gene:"What the hell!"

Gene noticed her and tried to swat her down, but she dodged his hand. I was still clawing at my chest which left bloody scratches. The pain masked the feeling of my mana being drawn to my back. After a few minutes insect wings popped out of my back and I passed out.

When I opened my eyes I saw the same wooden roof I've been seeing for the last week. I felt a cold sensation on my head so I touched it and found a wet rag. I sat up and looked around at my room. The last thing I remembered was eating one of Arias hairs. One of the walls in here had a few broken boards as if something smashed them and my door was missing. I pulled my feet out from under the covers and placed them on the ground. I stood up and walked over to the door while looking around for Aria. I didn't see her in the room so I went down stairs.

Gene:"I wonder why he didn't tell me about you?"

Aria:"It was probably for my safety. A person could make a lot of money off of selling a fairy so telling people of my existence can be dangerous."

Becket:"I don't have to pay extra for having someone else staying in the same room do I?"

Aria:"Becket!"

Gene:"Becket!"

Aria slammed her body into my face while hugging it and Gene pulled me into a hug that lifted my feet off the ground.

Becket:"Put me down."

Gene immediately set me down and backed off, but Aria was still clinging to my face so I had to peel her off. Her eyes were watery and she looked like she was about to cry.

Aria:"I-I thought you w-were dying!"

She was able to keep the tears from falling, but it was to late for Gene. His face was covered in tears and snot.

Becket:"What happened? How long was I out?"

Aria:"You went crazy and threw yourself all over the place then grew wings and passed out for about 10 minutes."

Becket:"Wings?"

I reached my hand around to my back and felt around, but there weren't any wings.

Becket:"I don't have wings."

Aria:"They vanished a few minutes after you passed out!"

Gene:"She's telling the truth. I saw them too."

I noticed the scratches on my chest so I touched them which stung. When I closed my eyes and tried concentrating I could feel something at my back. When I attempted to push mana towards it like I did with the plants I felt a tingle then wings shot out of my back.

Aria:"They're back!"

I opened my eyes and tried turning my head, but I could only see the ends of my wings so I reached around to feel them. They had kind of a leathery feel but stiffer and looked like Arias only bigger. I tried to flap them to fly and started to hover for a few seconds before turning upside down and landing on my head.

Aria:"Becket!"

Becket:"I'm ok."

I sat cross legged on the floor and concentrated. I could feel the flow of my mana through my body better then before. The mana flowed to each of my limbs so I tried to cut off the flow going to my wings. They vanished immediately after cutting the flow. I was curious what would happen if I cut the flow off of another limb, but I decided not to try it since I might lose a body part.

Becket:"Hey Gene how rare is the ability to fly?"

Gene:"Well only a race born with wings like dragons can fly. Some mages have attempted it with wind magic, but I heard it didn't end well."

*This will be very useful if I need to escape from a situation.*

I couldn't keep the smile off of my face as I thought about being able to fly without the assistance of a machine which has only been a dream for humans in my world. I jumped up and brushed my pants off. I wanted to see what I could from eating other things.

Becket:"I need to find some new things to eat."

Aria:"You're hungry? Me too!"

Gene:"I was about to start lunch if the two of you want to join me."

Aria:"Sure."

*Great. I get more of his cooking.*

I wanted to decline the offer, but couldn't since Aria already accepted it.

Becket:"I've got to go put a shirt on."

I ran up the stairs and tossed on the first jacket I bought. I picked up my dagger and cut slits in the back for my wings. I can't use them properly yet, but I wanted to be prepared. Aria and Gene talked all through lunch and she didn't seem to mind his cooking. I think she was happy to talk to a different person for once. We hung out for a while after finishing the food and the title stone suddenly started to flash. I sent mana to it, but before I could say identify a message popped up.

New Message

Becket:"Identify."

Meet Outside Of West Gate Now

I stopped feeding mana and the message disappeared.

Becket:"Seems to be a one time message. I guess an inbox was to much to ask for."

Aria and Gene had been looking at me this whole time.

Becket:"I've got to go do a job. You want to come Aria?"

Aria:"I'll stay this time. I'm gonna talk with Gene some more."

Becket:"Ok."

I went upstairs to put on my chest plate and get my satchel. I was impressed by the elves natural healing since the scratches were already completely healed. I decided to check the title stone one more time while I was alone so I sent it some more mana.

Becket:"Identify."

Becket:"Hm. Wing Manifestation. I wonder what would happen if I ate a whole fairy?"

I couldn't help but imagine tossing Aria into my mouth. I grabbed a skullcap I made with the material left over from the curtain robe. It was red and I used it to cover my ears. I also created a matching red cloak that I decided to put on too. Little red riding hood was the first thing that came to mind. I waved goodbye as I left the inn and jumped into the endless crowd of people. The city has four exits that are known called the north, south, east and west gates. I'm sure there's probably some sort of escape route out of the city for royalty, but I have no idea where it might be.

I made it to the west gate in about 20 minutes. I got tired of pushing through the crowd so I ended up using the rooftops. The west gate was a huge iron gate with two knights positioned on each side checking everyone that passes through. Next to each of the knights was a set of stairs leading up to archer towers. There were three archers in each tower with one mage to support them all. I was half tempted to provoke the mage since I still hadn't seen one use magic yet. The knights at the gate seemed on high alert, but since they didn't give me a second look I can assume I'm probably not who they're looking for. The trail through the gate was completely dirt since the constant foot traffic stomped out all grass.

I was given a quick pat down which ended in the guards disappointment since he thought I was a girl until he reached a sensitive spot. Once he found out I was a boy he stopped feeling me up and passed me through the gate. There were many people waiting around outside of it so I looked around for people who had an adventurers bracelet. There were actually a lot, but after talking with a few I still hadn't found who I was looking for.

I found another group and started walking over to them when my title stone started to flash.

Big Man:"You the explorer we're suppose to take with us?"

A big man with bulging muscles and bronze armor covering his chest, arms and legs was the first to talk to me. He had brown hair and eyes to match it. On his back was a huge sword that didn't seem practical in battle.

Becket:"I believe so."

Big Man:"Lets go then. We already lost time waiting for you."

He turned around and started walking off. There were three other people in the group. One guy who looked like the first ones little brother and wore only a silver chest plate with a spear. He had a scar across the left side of his face that went from his forehead to his chin. The other man looked thinner with shaggy black hair, leather armor and a cloak wrapped around him. He was carrying a staff with a blue jewel on the end of it. I could tell he was a mage which excited me.

*Maybe I'll finally see some spells.*

The last person was a girl with a hood thrown over her face and a cloak covering her body. I could see long brown hair, but she kept her gaze down so I couldn't see much else. Each of them wore a title stone with a brown wristband signifying their rank as adventurers. They were all following the big guy so I did too.

After an hour of walking into the forest I started to think he might not know where he was going, but that was soon proven wrong.

Big Man:"We're here! Equipment check!"

I didn't have much on me so I just stood there. We were standing at the mouth of a cave that led into total darkness. I could feel a cold breeze flowing out of it.

Big Man:"Elf girl! Check your equipment!"

Becket:"How'd you know I was an elf?"

I knew my ears were hidden, but he could still tell I was an elf.

Big Man:"Are you an idiot. That blonde hair, green eyes and alluring body made it obvious."

Becket:"Don't humans have those three things too?"

Big Man:"Of course they do, but elves have a special kind of look. The hair always appears silky, the eyes always shine like emeralds and no man can resist stealing a few glances at the seductive body of an elven woman."

*Maybe I should get a full set of armor.*

Big Man:"Now check your equipment!"

Becket:"All I have are the clothes on me, my satchel and a dagger."

Big Man:"Where are your rations?"

Becket:"Rations? Why do I need those?"

Big Man:"You idiot! Haven't you ever been in a dungeon before!"

Becket:"No."

A look of frustration covered big mans face.

Big Man:"Damn! This scouting job is going to take a while so you need to be prepared to stay the night here."

Becket:"I'm not here to scout so once I get the herbs I'm looking for I'll leave."

Big Man:"Idiot! If you leave alone you'll die! Without someone to protect them elves are helpless."

Becket:"Ok I'll eat what ever I find in there then."

I decided just to say whatever now then take off when I get the herbs.

Big Man:"Fine but monster meat tastes terrible."

He turned around and headed towards the cave.
