《Greenskin》Author's Note 03 - Civilised Races of Kyros
Advertisement
There are a variety of races that inhabit Kyros, some of them terrifying, some of them adorable. The species documented here are the ones that have built settlements, empires and kingdoms, developing societies, or integrating into others. This list is certainly not comprehensive, but it might better highlight the different peoples and their cultures that may be found throughout Greenskin.
Human (Humans)
Average Lifespan: 70 Years
Humanity are perhaps one of the most varying, and thriving races that inhabit all of Kyros, their peoples have found dozens upon dozens of nations, kingdoms and empires, they are most certainly the most numerous civilised species on Kyros, although this is often attributed to their relatively quick breeding and high fertility rates, it could also be argued that their frankly insane resilience and adaptibility is what has allowed them to colonise and inhabit almost every piece of land (and sea) in Kyros, to some degree.
Dwarf (Dwarves)
Average Lifespan: 95 Years
A once vast and great people, the kingdoms of the dwarves have long fell into disrepair, even now, many of their fabled underground halls and vast troves of treasure lie empty, filled with cobwebs and corpses instead of gold. The reason they had to leave their ancestral homes almost a millenia go was because of the Kitt, or 'elves', a particularly large horde of them waged a hundred year war against the dwarven people, employing underhanded tactics to infiltrate their stone fortresses, poisoning their water and burning their food. When the dwarves fled, many of their people died on their long journey, with some dying on the long march from The Leviathan's Jaw to Bruma, though many more fell under the poisoned arrows and brutish beasts employed by the elves that harassed them the entire way. As of today, most dwarves live and have integrated well with the people of Bruma and Djaal, though some have migrated east, either back to the Leviathan's Jaw, or to lands far further away.

Kitt/Elf (Kitta/Elves)
Average Lifespan: 60 Years
To many, the Elves are not considered 'civilised' and only the most daring of scholars would dare to make such a claim. The Kitta (Their own name for the collective tribes and societies of their species) are a band of different tribal civilisations that inhabit the wilds of Kyros, much like humanity, elves are known for inhabiting almost every environment in Kyros, and although they are smaller in number than their human counterparts (due to a slightly shorter life expectancy and lower fertility rates) they live in rather large communities. The general dislike and hatred of elves from the rest of the races of Kyros comes from their constant attacks on small towns and villages, though most Kittan raiding parties have little more than bows and furs. their proficiency with poisons, toxins and hunting, along with there naturally more resilient and stronger bodies allow them to overwhelm most militia and small military forces, though any city with large, non-flammable fortifications is generally considered safe from Kitt attack.
Due to their swift, brutal and efficient raids, as well as their general hostility to any non-Kitt in their lands, little is known about the Kitt besides their methods of murder, and they are seen more as demons, beasts and bad bedtime stories to most civilians.
There are of course some Kitt that have fled, or left their tribes and become part of the population in Bruma and Djaal, but they are generally shunned and hated, with most intentionally hiding their pointed ears underneath hoods for the sakes of hiding their ancestry.
With so many rumors surrounding the Kitt, many are hard to believe, though perhaps the oddest is the idea that they are able to innately communicate telepathically between one another
Gnome (Gnomes)
Average Lifespan: 85 Years
The Gnomes of Bruma have lived alongside humans for aslong as either species remembers, it is rather simply theorised that the gnomes and humans were part of an evolutionary split from one another, and (much to the dwarvish species distaste) that gnomes and dwarves are so similar that they are likely just slight variations of the same species. Compared to Dwarves, Gnomes are slightly smaller, generally thinner and they take more time to develop natural muscle mass, as well as this, gnomes possess smaller eyes with narrower fields of vision, though they have naturally enhanced eyesight, with a standard specimen of the race possessing 20/10 vision.

With slightly larger heads and these other differences in features, someone who has only read about either race might not know the difference, but most of the worlds population can differentiate between the two races rather easily, though it can be more difficult at longer distances.
There is one large and very significant difference between gnomes and dwarves however. In comparison to other races, gnomes have almost four times as many mages and other wizards, with almost all gnomes possessing some kind of magical capability that allows the species to almost universally utilise magic items.
Drauga/Dragonkin (Drauga/Dragonkin)
Average Lifespan: 120 Years
The Drauga are known by many as the 'Impossible Species' though they are also feared as warriors, mercenaries and soldiers. Although none of the Drauga species are naturally born with magical ability, they possess naturally immense strength and durability, as well as exceptional durability, with an adult Drauga (30+) having scales and hide that are more effective than non-magical steel armour.
The Drauga live alongside the other races of Kyros generally well, most other citizens get along with this race well, and there is very little prejudice against them, though it has risen slightly in the past century, due to a military revolt of an entire regiment of Drauga, which ended up banning the race from the military after that regiment almost completely destroyed a large section of the Bruman military, the same does not apply in Djaal however, with the Djaalic military employing and recruting as many Drauga as they can.
The term 'Dragonkin' comes from their lizard-like, bulky appearance and terrifying strength, though they are not (atleast directly) related to dragons. Many theorise that the Drauga would be the dominant species of Kyros if it weren't for a number of extremely odd, believed to be artifical factors.
A Drauga female can not have more than two children, the first is female, and the second is male. This has caused the Drauga population to do nothing besides continually dwindle; with their formerly vast population now reduced to one of the rarest non-mythical species in Kyros. Naturally, most researchers and scholars have came to the conclusion that the Drauga species was the result of genetic modification or some unknown magic, as there is no way any species would develop in such an odd manner.
Aaraki/Bugman (Aarakoa/Bugmen)
Average Lifespan: 30 Years
Short-lived and vast, the Bugmen of Djaal founded the first civilisations, spreading out across the vast desert from their original cities around The Water Mother. Although they ceded their control of Djaal when humanity came in droves to Djaal, the pacifistic people still control most of the Djaalic economy and political operations. Though they are seen as a rare, almost alien sight in Bruma and any other nation at that matter, roughly 40% of the Djaalic population is Aaraki, though a far fewer number of them are soldiers, with 95% of Djaal's military force being of other races.
The Aaraki still have an elective monarch, without a true kingdom. The Aaraki royal family is seen as secondary to the Human royals, though they have just as much authority and legal power, with the human king being the face of Djaal.
The Aaraki people generally have an exceptional adoration of valuable metals and gemstones, it is generally rather easy to guess an Aaraki's social status by their assorted gewelry, with the richer folk being adorned in dozens of golden bangles and diamond necklaces.

In Pursuit of Bark's Finest
On the frontiers of transhumanity’s expansion into the galaxy thousands of light years from the light of Sol, things can get rather chaotic. There are countless millions of nascent interstellar nations securing their interests, pirate ships prospering off plunder and deniable mercenary work, dissidents setting up their own civilizations, and other groups all trying to push an agenda. When these groups crash into each other, the results can become extremely messy and convoluted. Recently, a frontier nation calling itself the Red Star Union has found itself at the focal point of one such complication. A freighter under their protection has been sabotaged, hijacked in interstellar space, and robbed of its cargo. This would be bad enough even if all it were carrying was luxury goods, but the freighter Nebula Plow was carrying more than just normal trade goods. Indeed, her cargo of Non-Orientable Wormholes for use in starship power plants was both very expensive and very, very dangerous. Now the Red Star Union has to worry about a pirate crew running around with several extra devices capable of converting matter into antimatter with negligible energy cost. With those, the pirates could be capable of inflicting untold damage if allowed to leverage their ill-gotten gains into a stronger position, a possibility the Union finds completely intolerable. Unfortunately, all that the Red Star Union has to go on for evidence is two names; that of the captain, and that of the ship. The Captain is going by the possible pseudonym of Fuller, while the ship is named Bark’s Finest. And thus the orders came down to the Union’s Bureau of Starforce Intelligence: find more information on these pirates, conclusively identify them, and figure out where exactly they’ve gone to ground so that the fleet can crush them before they get established. Of the many agents that the bureau assigned to this mission, one would happen to play an important role: Field Agent Madeline Zargosty. This is her story. This story is entirely pre-written, and will have one chapter released per week. If you want to read it all ahead of schedule and get access to some premium-exclusive bonus content, the entire book is available for purchase; links to the appropriate storefront pages will be posted at the end of each chapter. This story is also being posted to Scribblehub.
