The hobgoblin checked over his status as he led his newly acquired partner along one of his more reliable hunting trails. The little one was both inexperienced and clumsy, so Grak had decided that it was unlikely the both of them could sneak up on a creature. Instead he was just going to check the traps he had set the previous day, having Steal kill some of the smaller prey he may have caught was an excellent and easy way to give the goblin experience, as well as make sure that the two of them could have a meal for the night.

The sun had already begun to fall below the horizon as the two hunters stumbled upon the first trap that had caught anything. It's a shame really, rather than a beefy beast, Steal's first kill as a hunter would be a wild-eyed little raccoon. It squawked up a storm as the goblin bashed it's tiny skull in with a rock. Grak told him not to use the spear, if he missed the head he could ruin the meat by piercing the small critter's stomach.

Since they were yet to encounter any real complications besides a 'meh' catch, Grak decided to carry on, another hour and they would be done with the trail, barring any odd occurrences.

The second successful trap was much like the other, though at least this catch was meatier than the last, a rather plump looking Spiny Rabbit received the same treatment as the raccoon, another fresh corpse was hanging from Grak's rawhide belt.

Then there was the third and final trap of the night. Another Spiny Rabbit had its leg caught in a rather primitive, but well-built snare. The little creature squealed violently as it tried to free itself, the keratin spikes that ran along its spine dug into the dirt when it flipped on its back and continued to roll around. The two hunters advanced slowly, though Steal moved a bit ahead, eager to use the rock again. The nasty little creature found an odd satisfaction in hearing the crunch of bone as he struck it.

As the greenskinned wannabe hunter was about to bring his rock down upon the critter's head; a deep guttural and feral snarl erupted from above. A flash of red and black fur dropped from a thick branch that stretched a dozen feet overhead. Within a second it was upon him, a snarling mass of muscle and fangs crashed into the bloated goblin, Steal's mind seemed to run wild as his thoughts were quickly filled with nothing but the idea of running away. The beast's jaws opened, yellow, blood-stained teeth began to move closer, as if to close around Steal's throat.

With a surprised yelp, the foul-breathed beast leapt backwards, jaws snapping closed at nothing.

Grak's spear sprang forward from his hands as he charged the beast off of his more fragile colleague. With the creature no longer atop him, Steal managed to get a good look at it. A wolf, with midnight black fur and a number of dim, crimson chitin plates dotted around it's vital spots like natural armor.

Steal didn't recognise the wolf, but the more experienced hobgoblin recognised it as a Crimson Wolf, these wolves were far more cunning, agile and deadly than their more mundane counterparts, however due to a low birth rate and longer maturity time, they were a rare breed, as well as solitary hunters. It wasn't unheard of for Crimson Wolves to hunt in packs, and if this was one of those rare cases, the hunters were certainly dead.

A clawed paw lashed out at the wooden shaft of Grak's spear, the powerful swing splintered the weapon in half, but not before the hobgoblin managed to bury the front half between an armor plate in the monster's side. Steal had gotten up by the time Grak's spear was shattered, he was certain he had the element of surprise, and lunged forwards with his own spear. Admittedly his weapon was shorter, to make it manageable for the rather small goblin.

Nevertheless, Steal followed through on his attack, the goblin managed to lodge his spear between two of the thicker chitin plates, sadly, the wolf span around to face his most recent attacker, it's powerful body tore the spear from the goblin's grasp.

The wolf moved to pounce again, snout curling into a feral snarl as it sprung forewards, Steal stumbled to one side, unable to avoid the wolf completely. A jagged claw tore through through the frail goblin's bulbous stomach.

You have been Grazed.

You have suffered 37 Damage.

It was nothing more than a graze, yet Steal felt as if his life was ebbing away. The goblin scrambled away from the menacing beast, making an effort to keep distance from the creature.

A slim arrow shot besides Steal's head and sank into the soft flesh of the wolf's neck. And another, slicing a shallow cut through the thick muscles of the beast's calf. The beast snarled again, dull red plates now flowing with streaks of a brighter red.

The mortally wounded creature looked between the hobgoblin and goblin before pouncing towards Steal again; the wiry little green monster took the charge head-on as the two of them tumbled into the overgrown grass, a ball of green flesh and matted black fur slashed at one another desperately until they broke apart. Both green and black was now nothing but blood-red. The two desperate monsters snarled and spat at one another, saliva mixing with blood as it ran down each of their mouths.

Another manic howl erupted from the wolf as it gave in to one last desperate charge, muscular legs carried the beast towards the borderline dead goblin, the wolf sprang at Steal again.

THWIP

This arrow pierced through the beast's eye, popping it as the flint arrowhead lodged into the wolf's brain.

At last, the barbaric beast collapsed, dead.
